    Prawn Tempura, $14.95 - 0 Star
    Eva M.

Toma Sushi replaced Ikiiki Sushi. I never been to either one and decided to give them a try. As soon as I saw the menu, I wanted to get up and leave. But hubby was hungry and wanted to stay. The thing is I have a pet peeve against pan Asian places. Despite the restaurant name, this is a pan Asian restaurant with random dishes of Thai-like, Chinese-like, etc., dishes on the menu. There is always a strong chance that the restaurant doesn't have the proper Japanese training and/or some of the dishes would be made incorrectly for the region. Unfortunately, I was proven right again. I have a strong preference for authenticity; this is not the place. The restaurant is sparsely decorated. The service was sufficient. The Food: Agedashi Tofu, $6.95 - 0 Star They did not use the right kind of Japanese tofu, such that the bite inside is not smooth and custardy. In fact, their tofu is old with hints of sourness. It was gross. They didn't include the freshly grated daikon and instead add the shaved bonito flakes that you can buy in a package. Poor substitution. Prawn Tempura, $14.95 - 0 Star Before we ordered, I had doubts if they really make good tempura. The server said they are good and are BIG pieces, with emphasis on the word big. She clearly does not know what a prawn tempura is supposed to look like since these are skinny finger type of diameter. I can buy frozen ones from Asian markets that can air-fry to look similar than theirs. Again, no freshly grated daikon for the dipping sauce. Soft-Shell Crab Mango Salad Roll, $15.95 - 2.5 Stars Menu: Soft-shell crab, mango, avocado, cucumber, and mixed-baby greens wrapped in rice paper, served with spicy mango sauce I was curious how their creativity would pan out with this dish, a mix of Japanese and Vietnamese. The soft-shell crab didn't stand out well enough; it's a fried 'something undefined' type of taste. Basically, need more crab. The mango sauce is not spicy; it's a pale-yellow goo. I didn't like it or hate it. Not ordering this again. Hotate (scallop) nigiri, $6.25 - 3.5 Stars The better of the two nigiris of the night. The scallops were good and fresh. Sake (salmon) nigiri, $6.50 - 3 Stars Hubby liked them better than me. I believe they are Atlantic and had a milder taste. They added slit-cuts to the salmon pieces. I think all the Japanese sushi chefs would be appalled. Spider Roll, $11.50 - 3.5 Stars Menu: soft-shelled crab, avocado, cucumber, mango, tobiko This basic roll was the best deal amongst what we ordered, which is kind of sad since it's a shorter roll with five pieces only. Cherry Blossom, $16.95 - 3 Stars Menu: Salmon and avocado, topped with tuna, seaweed salad, tobiko, drizzled in poki sauce This roll is busier than I like. The seaweed salad on top was a bit much. It was an ok combination, just not something I would order again. Godzilla, $17.95 - 3 Stars Menu: Soft-shell crab & avocado topped with seared spicy salmon, tempura flakes and unagi sauce This roll is a small step up from the Spider Roll with the salmon on top and cost $6.45 more. The tempura flakes didn't add value to the bite since the fried soft-shell crab already provided the crunch.

Pretty cool room inside the restaurant.

Apparently the old Ikiiki Sushi is now replaced by the new "Toma Sushi." The menu has changed significantly, and the food looks much more delicate than before (yes this is opinionated). We got what they called the Sea Turtle roll and the Unagi Don. They are a bit on the pricier side but the taste is solid. The restaurant is very clean and the service was great. Would visit again.

It's still much better overall than the Toshi's in Kenmore. I was going home in the middle of the day and stopped to order Pork Teriyaki takeout. It was not Teriyaki!! At home I opened up a bright red Char Sui pork like bbq pork that was overcooked and dry and with an overwhelming garlic flavor. Really disappointing but I was hungry so I ate half of it before I had to tap out. My wife tried just 1 piece and said Yuk! This red dye and over seasoned meat left me miserable the rest of the day and overnight and often going to the rest room. Everything is red as beets if you know what I mean? The place is quite busy, service took a while so call in first, and really a dirty filthy location in one of Kenmore's only remaining retail spaces from the 50s. In the past they have been ok I guess but wow! Don't get the pork. It should almost be illegal to give someone that much food dye in their meal!

It was also my first time trying their sliced brisket, pork ribs, bacon and collard greens (also ordered their corn bread). Brah... I have no words. Now I'm a fellow big back foodie and I had just gotten off a shift at work so I was HUNGRY. Well, I prob ate like half of the platter before realizing I was full. Like full. So even though the platter was twice as expensive as the sandwich/side combos I normally get here, you're essentially also getting 2+ meals out of a single item. The pork ribs and sliced brisket were sooo good w their spicy bbq sauce and corn bread. The collard greens were aight. I'd prob stick to their sweet potato fries or hush puppies next time. I also want to try their brisket chili one day. It's just hard to deviate from sides I already know I like haaha. Anyways, yeah. Brah. The first time I came to Modoo Hansang, I found a long hair in my soup, then a long hair in my rice. I left quickly without finishing much of anything, but the situation was taken care of by the manager. I understand this could just be a bad day, a fluke of sorts... so about 7 months later, I came back to give it another shot. They have a decently extensive menu, and they have a lunch set that is half-sized portions. I got the soondooboo and the galbi lunch set, and it was a good amount of food for one. The side dishes aren't really your traditional side dishes, and they're presented very beautifully. It makes you feel like you're fine dining. The flavor seemed a bit more fusion than traditional. They also give apps like california rolls, salad, and soup. (My gripe is that they should have used a miso dressing instead of an Italian dressing that tastes like it came from a bottle for the salad.) Overall, you order your entree, and you get what feels like a 5 course meal. Went at 1:00 PM on a Saturday, but it wasn't busy at all. Got seated immediately, and there were 2-3 other parties dining as well. Modoo Hansang gets the job done if you're craving a hearty Korean meal~

I can imagine a line out the door during peak hours. I ordered the mushroom soft tofu stew (sundubu-jjigae) + pork bulgogi combo (medium spicy), and my wife ordered the Galbitang. The food arrived 10-15 minutes after ordering, despite three more tables arriving and placing orders around the same time - I noticed they got their food within the same window. This place is efficient. The sundubu-jjigae arrived in a stone pot, broth running surprisingly clear and light for how substantial it tasted. The pork bulgogi came out still sizzling on a cast iron skillet over a wooden board - the kind of presentation that makes the table next to you immediately regret their order. Portion-wise, the pork felt slightly light for a $28 combo relative to everything else on the table. The banchan deserves its own mention: eight-ish dishes - kimchi, bean sprouts, gyeran mari (beautifully golden rolled egg), seasoned greens, braised tofu, pickled daikon, and a couple more I'm still trying to identify. None of it felt like filler - the kind of sides you keep reaching for absentmindedly mid-conversation until they're gone. The rice was a multigrain mix (purple-black grains) rather than plain white, a small detail that signals care for the fundamentals. My wife's galbitang arrived looking like a commitment - massive short rib bones in a rich, clean broth that meant business before you'd even picked up a spoon. She ended up so full we packed the rice and half the dish to go. When your takeout bag solves dinner that evening, that's a PORTION SIZE WIN. One last detail worth calling out: they proactively offered me an apron since I was eating spicy food in a white polo. Small gesture, real thoughtfulness - and apparently aprons are limited, so I appreciated being asked first.
