I can now say I've gone to Naked Fish for the first time! My friend was craving sushi, so we came in around 4-4:30pm. It seemed kinda empty..the place probably had 3 parties sitting down. We chose to sit on the side since no one came to seat us, but after we sat down, a waitress immediately gave us our menu. My friend & I both ordered the Lion King Roll ($7.75). She asked the waitress how many pieces there were and the waitress said 6. As we sat down talking, more people started to come in. Service was a bit slow..there were 2 waitresses and 4 groups sitting in the restaurant. I would give it 3/5 stars for service because when my friend asked about the green tea ice cream, they decided to give her a small sample which I thought I was nice of them. Overall, they were friendly..but slow. When the LKR came out, turns out there was about 8 pieces..and it's different from what I usually see at other restaurants. Instead of it being placed as 2 columns, it was one row. The sauce was very orangey color and as for taste..I feel like you can taste more of the sauce than the sushi itself. The sushi itself had lots of rice and I could hardly spot the baked salmon. Turns out the small pieces of baked salmon was buried underneath all that sauce!! Honestly, I probably wouldn't come back here again .. maybe for a quick bite, but that's all. After we left, my friend noticed more people stepping in..so I guess it's kinda popular. Not stellar but it's good enough. The place is tucked away in an unassuming shopping center. Tucked away next to some other larger restaurant locations. The atmosphere is nice, normal for this style restaurant. The service was great and the quality of the sushi that I ate was great. The miso soup is better than most and you need to try the lion king and beautiful roll. I visited on the recommendation of a colleague and wasn't disappointed. I did want to say that I also tried their spider roll, but it had a different kind of taste than any other I have eaten. I'm not saying it was bad, but everywhere I go, that roll has been pretty consistent, and this one was different. I saw other reviews complain about the size and i would agree that certain rolls are narrower than what I'm used to, but not all of them are like that. I remember when the restaurant had a fire many many years ago and remained shut down for a few years. I for one was devastated to say the least.. but I remained hopeful about a re-opening and to my surprise, a sign announcing their grand re-opening appeared and all was well in Hayward, CA again. I've came here a few times and I must say the customer service has been very consistent. These folks are very personable, greeting you when you walk in and helping you answer any questions with the menu. Aesthetically its clean with a rustic sea/ Japanese influence. This is one of the better sushi spots I've found in Hayward so far, at least for lunch. I work out here but don't live here. I've tried at least 5 or 6 spots, and this is the only one I've found where the nigiri tastes fresh and the rolls are a good size. The price isn't bad and the servers are friendly, at least for pickup. The gyoza is bomb too. I got sake & unagi nigiri, and a dragon roll, with gyoza on the side. Wow! My husband and I have been going here for quite some time now. And each time we go here we have a delicious meal! While they do offer Ala Carte items, the value is in the Bento Box! Chicken Karrage and Beef Teriyaki are really Good while my husband likes the fried veggies and sometimes the meat selections. I like the Asahi Beer and he loves his Plum Wine, Which I suggest you should try Plum wine as opposed to some of the other wines that you know you taste and try? It's very tasty and delicious! Came here one day because my go to sushi restaurant in Hayward was closed. I Remembered about this spot from my cousin who use to come here often. Review is strictly on service and the rolls. Great customer service. Our server was very busy who had the bar plus 5 more tables to wait on. The rolls were delicious. We ordered the dragon, green dragon, spider, deluxe California, and tempura roll. To be honest, I would probably skip on the spider roll, because it was plain and I've had better spider rolls from other places. Simply just did not enjoy the spider roll but everything else I enjoyed. Plus, the rolls are huge. Each piece was bugger than normal and I'm not complaining, I actually love it's bigger than usual. *Update 8/16* Hmm... I think I really should have held off before giving a semi-positive review to this place originally (***). Based on my previous impression, I thought it would be nice to stop by for a quick lunch the other day. Big mistake. I ordered a chicken karaage, and it was by far the nastiest fried chicken I have ever had, much worse than even at the lousiest hole in the wall tapioca joints I've been to. I think they should change the name to chicken "Kingsford" for how charred it was. It was literally pitch black, and I was surprised that the chefs here had the nerve to even serve anything like that. Any normal restaurant would have been ashamed, and at least tried to make it halfway presentable. And if you don't know how to make it... well, don't put it on the menu! To top it off, as mentioned previously, the sushi is not very tightly wound, and this time around, it all seemed to unravel the second my chopsticks lifted it a millimeter off the plate. Don't let the decent sized crowd fool you. None of the patrons are Japanese, or even East Asian, so that tells you the story. I should have stuck with my previous gut instincts. No more "gaijin" restaurants for me. Awful. Avoid at all costs. *Original 7/29* Wow, I had no idea this place was so popular, with already 40+ Yelp reviews. Friends and family have been coming for years, and although it is practically the closest sushi joint to my house, I never really gave it a shot because it appeared to be much too "gaijin" for me. It's not that I'm a sushi snob or anything - far from it - but the combination of having no kanji or kana on the menu, the odd sounding name, and the non-Japanese employees (or even Asian, for that matter) was all just about enough to turn me completely off. However, it was a recent gathering of old acquaintances that ultimately brought me to Naked Fish the other night, and I must say I'm very glad that I had the opportunity. The restaurant itself is about medium sized, with about 12-15 four person tables, and we were easily able to fit our party of 16 heads at 7:30 pm on a Saturday evening. In addition, there is also a mini sushi bar in the back of the room. The decor is simple, with just the right amount of lighting, and the sound insulation seems to have been properly done, as the noise level never creeps into the unbearable decibel range. Furthermore, the unisex bathroom is surprisingly clean. As mentioned earlier, the wait staff is somewhat odd. None of them seem to be Japanese, if even Asian at all. This has always been somewhat of an issue for me, but over the years, I have noticed myself becoming more lax to the idea. Besides, it seems as if 75% of the patrons aren't even Asian themselves (other than our table, I didn't notice any others), so it might be a moot point. The prices are very reasonable, and are lower than average for sushi bars I have visited. The selection of rolls is also quite plentiful, and I like how they actually have a description of each item written on the menu for those who may not be familiar with all the types. The best thing is that portions are absolutely HUGE. I could barely finish my own plate, yet was coerced by my Yelper companion to brush off the rest of her serving as well. By the time I was finished, I could have probably registered for a sumo tournament. The individual rolls themselves are also large in size, and high in presentation. The only problem is that they could stand to be just a bit more tight. I found myself the butt of a few jokes when caught with an unraveling dragon roll splattering all over the plate. In short, perhaps I have been too closed minded in the past about giving non-Japanese Japanese restaurants a fair shake, but Naked Fish just might be the place to reform me. It certainly wouldn't be my first choice in the local area, but if I'm too lazy to drive very far, I could find myself stopping by again sometime in the near future. read more

My husband and I come here occasionally whenever we're feeling up to a quick sushi fix. This great out of CONVENIENCE b/c it is so close to home and has commendable sushi for a great price. We typically like to stick to a simple order of food starting at 2 tuna maki and 2 salmon maki, and then finishing with a roll of our choice, which turns out to be just enough for the two of us for a light dinner. The older gentlemanly server is always helping us and he is also very great at his job as well! Even way back when I was a teen/young adult, before Yelp existed and I didn't know very many food places, I knew of Naked Fish and ate there whenever I was in Hayward. Here are the reasons why I liked Naked Fish and this is what I rate by: Appearance: The restaurant is clean and the food looks delicious. Quality: The food IS delicious. Your typical Japanese-American restaurant with a variety of bento's, udon and sushi rolls to choose from. Price: The prices are reasonable. I ordered two 2-item bento combination boxes and 3 sushi rolls. There were only two of us and we were beyond stuffed. You probably could have fed 3 people with the amount of food we had and feel satisfied. Final Bill Total BEFORE tip was $48.83. Customer Service: The waitresses are nice and pay attention to their tables. This means refilling my water without me having to ask for it. I always need to ask for them to refill my hot tea though, but maybe that is because the tea cup is not clear like the water glass and they cannot see. I LOVE this place! Been a regular customer since 08' They don't have a lot fancy rolls but my fave are: sunny California with cream cheese, Dream roll, and the beautiful roll! Their prices are really affordable as well. Giving them a minus 1 star because the female Hispanic server has bad service. She may act really nice but she forgets about you a lot and when she's having a bad day, YOU CAN TELL. She also only cares about the tables she's serving unlike the other servers, they help everyone. She's mostly rude over the phone and gets your order wrong. She's been there forever so she's really comfortable as far as her mannerisms. But other than that, the staff is great! They're all really nice and if you need something remade bc they didn't do it right for whatever reason, they will be happy to make you a new one. read more

This place is very specially to me because my BF and I use to have our lunch dates here when we were still "talking" and here we are 7 years later and we still enjoy their food. The minus star is for somewhat increasing the prices since they reopened and the servings got smaller. Anyways the food never disappoints is all that matters. Our go to here is their bento box, and my typical order consist of tempura shrimp, no rice extra salad and philly roll. My BF will switch it up some times and he'll order salmon or teriyaki chicken with sunny California roll. The servers are always so friendly and they will acknowledge you and refill your drink if you need more. The place is small so sometimes it can get loud and be prepared to be seated close to other random people but honestly I don't mind that atmosphere. Convenient location in the shopping center at Jackson and Amador, so never have to worry about parking! Clean bathroom with a nice corner wall that separates the closest table from direct air flow from the bathroom door when it is opened (oh the little things). Not good for wrinkle prevention. Appetizers: -Gyoza: Pan fried and crispy on the outside... Much prefer pan fried to steamed. 6 pieces per order. -Side salad: Standard iceberg lettuce with a peanut flavored sauce. -Miso soup: Served with spoons. That's different. -Chicken Karaage: Very crispy (if you cannot tell by now, I love good crisp) Rolls: Are made and served quickly, even during busier times :) -49ers roll: My favorite rolls all "rolled" into one! A california roll topped with spicy tuna, tempura crunch, and spicy sauce. DELICIOUS. Served with 8 nicely rolled pieces. -Dynamite: Pretty roll, but apparently not as tasty as it looks. My friend had this roll and I didn't try it but she was not a fan. It is a deep fried roll that apparently was not crunchy as you would expect. Soggy in a deep fried roll is no bueno. -They also are very flexible about custom rolls. We ordered a salmon, avocado, and macadamia nut roll. Soup: -Beef udon: Great flavor, nice sized portion.
