Hubby and I arrived here at noon today for lunch. Its been at least a decade since we've been here and it has changed quite a bit. Inside has been remodeled. It's bright with simple decor. I feel like the menu has gotten much bigger including Laos/Cambodian dishes. There were a few parties having lunch already when we arrived. We were told to head to the table inside. No specific tables were mentioned so we sat anywhere that was inside. Menus were brought out right away and the staff stood nearby waiting for us to take our order and was was brought out immediately after we ordered. We ordered the following: 1. La Mein Xao Thap Cam (combination stiry fried noodles): Reminds me of Thai's drunken noodles without the sweetness. Very savory and seasoning was just right. Flavorful but not salty. The noodles were thicker than the usual chow fun. It was cooked perfectly and is chewey just the way I like it. There was not alot of noodles but with the amount of vegetables with shrimp and chicken that it worked out well as the dish filled me up. 2. Hu Tieu Dai, Kho (Combination noodles w/ transparent tapioca based noodles, dry (or you can request with soup): The bowl is big enough for hubby to mix his noodles. He says the noodles were cooked well, nice, firm, and chewey. The sauce is flavorful and not too salty. Hubby says the protein could be more. There were a few slices of pork, 2 shrimp, 1 small piece of squid, 1 thin slice of pork heart & 1 small piece of liver. This dish is accompanied with a vegetable plate and a bowl of soup on the side. The vegtable plate had a small portion of blanched bean sprouts and a couple pieces of cut up Chinese celery. For my husband who loves veggies in his food, that was not enough. He asked for more bean sprouts. Overall, we both enjoyed our meal. Service was not great nor bad. When we need extra bean sprouts my husband was able to locate a staff and got their attention. His request was met promptly. Aside from that, no staff came by to check in nor refill our water. We will definitely returned with our boys in the future to try other dishes. WOW!! SO UNDERRATED! Ordered the #1 Dac Biet Hu Tieu Nam Vang (Special Cambodian Noodle) and got it DRY, which means the soup comes seperately. I also ordered a side of Chinese donuts to dip in my soup. The noodles were perfectly al dente, extremely chewy and bouncy and had a great savory flavor. They do not skimp on the fried garlic and green onions either! The proteins in the bowl were also not overcooked which I was very surprised about. Even the shrimp was bouncy! Shout out to my friend for taking me to this low-key spot! It's located in a sketchy parking lot and that's a sign the food is gonna taste authentic. The interior of the restaurant feels very homey. My husband and I came back to Nam Vang once or twice a few years back to try them again but we never really cared for their sauce...more soy sauce based and not sweet enough for our tastes. We recently went to their sistering location, N & K Noodles inside Grand Century Mall. We thought that place was OK so we wanted to go back to Nam Vang again to compare. Plus I was craving hu tieu again and didn't know where else we should go. It's located in the Lion Alvin Center. Parking is tight but since we came on a Thursday, we found a spot right away. We're always so weary of this area because of all the terrible drivers. It's pretty ghetto and dirty too. We got there around noon and the restaurant was half full. There was a sign that basically showed a "no strollers" picture and but they didn't say anything to us when we walked in with ours. Probably because it wasn't a packed day. We did have to park it in the inside near the wall so it was awkward and cramped but the waitress said it's to protect the baby from the hot soup if it spilled. Waitress said in viet: "Okay to spill on adult but can't burn a baby." Lol We ordered.. DAC BIET HU TIEU DAI NAM VANG KHO $16.95 -special cambodian clear chewy noodles, dry style. It had shrimp, ground pork, sliced liver and sliced pork. Topped with fried garlic, green onion and cilantro. It came with a side of pork bone soup. My noodles were chewy and not overcooked. I squeezed some lime in and ate it with their pickled green chili peppers but it still tasted plain. The sauce on my noodles was too light or maybe the noodles didn't really absorb it? My husband got it with hu tieu (rice noodles) and his was more flavorful. 3/5* DAU CHAO QUAY $3.50 -chinese donut. It came out warm, lightly toasted and still chewy / fluffy. YUM. Just kinda small for the price. 4/5* XIU MAI $3.75 -pork meatball. Came out hot, juicy and pretty flavorful. I liked dunking the donuts into the fat juices. Again, kinda small for the price. 4/5* They also have mi (egg noodles), hu tieu xao (chow fun), mi xao (chow mein), com chien (fried rice), com dia (rice plates), bun (rice noodle), chao (porridge) canh (soup), kho to (clay pot), lau (hotpot) and some meat, veggie & seafood entrees. I was surprised to see how extensive their menu was. I thought they only offered different variations of hu tieu nam vang. Lol To pay, we just grabbed the tab they left at our table and paid with the cashier. Between the two restaurants, I think Nam Vang has more flavor if you get hu tieu and not hu tieu dai.
