I was finally able to try Nama Ramen last week. I was so excited but I believe the hype has died down. The greeter was not the most welcoming but I will chalk that up to it being super busy. The waitstaff though was amazing. They were very attentive and kept the drinks filled, table cleared and answered all our questions. The food... their spicy edamame with bacon was absolutely delicious but their ramen lacked flavor. We were a table of 3 and ordered different ramen versions so we could compare. The best of the three was Spicy Karaage Ramen...the four cheese blend made a difference (8/10) Chicken Tori even with spicy bomb was (4/10) Tantenmen was (5/10). We frequent ramen spots and this did not live up to the hype. We really really wanted to love this place. read more

At its original location its food was always awesome!! Now since they own their own spot, I feel like they've been cutting corners. The tonkatsu broth no longer becomes solid (highly gelatinous, high quality) in the fridge, less quality. The eggs are unpredictable in how seasoned they'll be (although they are always cooked wonderfully) so sometimes they taste just like a normal unseasoned egg. They removed the thin noodles from the menu because not enough people were ordering them... the only good change is that we can now use more than two credit cards per table because it's pay before you sit. oh, and there's no longer a constant 1 hour wait for it (which used to be worth). Noodle texture is everything. I tried a couple different noodles and disliked both. Yakuza Style tastes like Louisiana hot sauce. It's got some heat but the flavor is like Tabasco and butter. I do not like Buffalo sauce and that's what the yakuza style tasted like to me. I tried a couple friends noodles and I just couldn't get over the noodle consistency. I went with a large group that suggested this place for dinner, so I sat down with some pretty high expectations-- all of which were not met. The broth of the ramen tasted like dish soap and was very watery--uncharacteristic of authentic ramen. The added flavouring of the broth accentuated the soapy taste as well. As someone who works in the restaurant industry, I've been contemplating whether or not I should write this. However, the way my guests and I were treated was absolutely unacceptable. I made a rezzo online for 4ppl @ 5pm (when they open). During the booking process, they require you to put down a $20 deposit before they even consider/confirm your reservation, which is different, but I get that times are changing & restaurants need to protect themselves and their employees. I greatly underestimated traffic & knew I was going to be late. As they do not have a phone or a direct way to contact the reservation department, I messaged the FB page & spoke with someone to let them know. This person was insanely helpful during the booking process & I'm very grateful that the company has employed someone like this. 6/5* We (3/4ppl) arrived at 5:05pm as the other person was still stuck in traffic. Within 3mins of sitting down, I put in several apps so we could get the ball rolling & weren't holding up the table. During this time, before we got our apps, the waiter visited our table asking if we were ready to put in our entrees. I informed him that our final guest was about to arrive and we'd put in our entree orders as soon as he got there. During this time, I had asked several questions, as it was my first time here, inquiring about menu items. He was very knowledgeable. The other 2ppl in my party had been coming here for yrs, so they already knew what they wanted. My last guest arrived right as our appetizers arrived at the table. He knew immediately what he wanted. A few mins l8r, the waiter took our entree orders. In addition to the Ramen that my final guest ordered, the 2 veterans ordered 2 rolls each. I ordered the Braised Beef Udon with Add-Ons. Sadly, they were out of the Onsen add-on. Along with that, I ordered an assortment of nigiri, including the off-menu Toro nigiri. Each nigiri order comes with 2 pcs/order. During service, we had stacks of dirty plates that I moved to the side of the table so they could easily be retrieved, had to consistently ask for more refills of soft drinks & H2O, along w/ other items that should have already been provided b4 food hit the table. (Timeline: 30mins into rezzo time). The hot entrees were first to come out. Not even 2mins after the hot entrees arrived, the waiter came up to us to let us know that we needed to be out by 6:15pm & that if we wanted to order anything else, we needed to put it in right then so they could start making it. When he told us this, I hadn't even taken the first bite of my entree and 50% of my party still hadn't received their entree. Granted, we still had over 30mins before 6:15pm. Riddle me this: how am I supposed to know if myself or my guests want to order anything else if we haven't taken our first bites or even received our entrees yet? Unacceptable. At this point, my guests and I were absolutely shocked and appalled by the way were treated. Especially the people who recommended we try it. I almost wanted to leave right then and there, but I was being patient and didn't want to cause a scene. Even then, before the sushi entrees arrived, I went ahead and ordered a few more items before I left; digging and hoping for a reason that would allow them to redeem themselves for such a horrible customer service experience. After I ordered the final items, we finally received the sushi entrees. This arrived ~25mins after we ordered the entrees. Our final items arrived at the table within mins of receiving the sushi entrees. I could tell the sushi station had a lot of to-go orders, so it's understandable. We deal with the same thing at the restaurant that I work at & it's absolutely not their fault. All ordered items hit the table @6pm. We had 15mins left to finish our food according to our waiter. We took a couple bites & the waiter returned 5mins l8r to take our $. We paid & spent the remaining 10mins of our time slot packing away the food that we didn't have time to enjoy b4 being "politely" kicked out. Sushi was just okay, I could go to HEB for the exact same quality, but the hot items were delicious. We spent about $140 before T&T. Honestly, would have spent more if we hadn't been rushed out the door. I'm not the only one either. Hopefully, this company policy changes because the way we were treated is absolutely disgusting and unacceptable. My guests and I will not be returning or recommending this place to anyone ever again UNLESS this changes. read more

The food: The Sukiyaki Fries are pretty damned good. The fries arrive bathed in a spicy mayo sauce with thin slices of ribeye and green onions. Not terribly spicy but they're still good. The Tonkotsu Ramen is a creamy, garlicky pork broth with slices of pork belly, chopped mushrooms, and chopped green onions. They have several add on choices (for an extra charge) to go with your ramen. From sliced duck breast, to roasted corn, to mushrooms, to shredded pork, they have all kinds of stuff. This one was ordered with the "Spice Bomb." It's a sweet tasting chili paste (85 cents) served on the side. I tasted it before it was mixed in and it had a good, sweet flavor but it wasn't very spicy. The service: Once I was seated, my order was taken quickly, and the food was delivered in a timely manner. I was checked up on often, and the bill was delivered promptly. ZERO complaints in the service department. The atmosphere and overall experience: Nama Ramen only has 10-15 tables, so expect a 20-30 minute wait in the evenings. The place is so small that you have to wait outside, so be aware of this if it's cold or if it's hot outside. Yeah, the food is good, and they have a great variety of ramen, but the wait is a real whoopin'. There's also a list of rules on the front door that you must follow to get in and out in an expedient manner (see pix). There's only 6-8 inches between tables, so you'll practically be sharing your dining experience with other patrons. I was so close to the table next to me that I considered taking pictures of their food for my review - really! Tips: ***Chopsticks only. No forks or knives. I saw several diners who had those special "training wheels" on their chopsticks but I'm not sure if Nama Ramen supplied those, or if the customers brought their own. I'm not a chopstick guy, so I struggle here. Really. No to-go orders. They're open until midnight every night of the week but closed Sundays. The Nama roll was delish, perfectly presented, every bite was like the first time. The Miso Ramen did not disappoint. I loved the roasted corn and appreciated the amount of pork in this dish. At first I didn't know what to expect but when I got to the door and there was a waiting line I knew I had to stay. This building has an amazing location and building. We finally got a seat and it was small with either tables for two or a booth for 4. The staff was accommodating and cleaning every chance they got. Maybe it's because I enjoyed a flavorful bowl of tonkotsu ramen the night before with a staff that was almost too happy to see me and I was spoiled, but I didn't get any of that "special" vibe here at Nama Ramen. Since the establishment is small they have list of house rules that border on the negative side of pedantic and snobby. Things like not being able to seat your party until everyone arrives. Understandable. Small building, popular spot. They need to get as many people in and out as possible. No take-out. Well. That sucks. Each of us ordered a different type of ramen. Sarah had the shoyu, Christina had spicy miso, and I had tonkotsu, because I am unimaginative and stuck with what was delicious the night before at another spot. The ramen was like night and day. The egg was medium-hard boiled (far from the soft boiled deliciousness that makes a good bowl great), the pork belly a little stringy and chewy, not at all melting and tender. The broth was delicious but forgettable. Service was also forgettable, but given it was packed, they were all seemingly spread thin. I remember there being a long wait, and after being sat and ordering, we were served, and I did not care for the ramen at all. This caused me never to go back there until the summer of 2021. This was when they had moved to their new location and started serving sushi. I ordered the rainbow roll and enjoyed it, but we didn't go back until this past week. I noticed they now only serve two sushi rolls, so I decided to give their ramen one more try, and it has not changed. It is not authentic at all, and you can tell the meat and noodles are not fresh. Most places make their own noodles, and these taste store bought. Nama Ramen has a great atmosphere and kind staff, but if you think their ramen is authentic, you probably should try some of the other ramen places in San Antonio. read more

It's been a while since I've eaten at Nama Ramen-- not since they've been at the location down the street (next to Kuma)! Now that they've relocated, the space is even bigger, cleaner, and overall a better experience! As for COVID precautions, they take your temperature at the door and also make you pump some hand sanitizer before entering the space. The physical menus are gone and they have you scan a QR code on the table for the digital menu. The tonkotsu ramen (pictured) was great! And the Nama Rolls were AMAZING. I came here for dinner time with my husband. First of all they don't offer forks , which really sucks if you don't know how to use chopsticks.We both ordered the spicy miso ramen. To start off the ramen is okay. It's is very flavorful but doesn't have the authentic Japanese ramen flavors . It's also not spicy . The spicy miso usually always has ground pork but this one had shredded pork that tasted like barbacoa (beef meat). The spicy paste is good and spicy but on the sweeter side . Then I ordered the GTR Sushi roll and it was the life saver of the night . I have to say the sushi was delicious . The edamame was steamed with some type of brown sauce and sesame seed which gave it an amazing unique taste. I will be coming back for the edamame and sushi but unfortunately not for the ramen. I really enjoy how they have a ramen bar type of vibe going on. I also enjoyed how the restaurant is very hip. The only thing before coming here is this place is not really good for groups. Since they only have smaller tables that seat 2 persons and booths that can only seat 4. Also the wait was 30-35 min which is standard at any ramen . Love this place , I really really love Ramen, and I think that this place is a good spot to go to. Very small so you would have to get there when they open. The only thing that I don't like is that they charge you to get a spice bomb which is trying to make it spicy however, it's not spicy at all. ( well if you like spicy and you would think that is just regular flavoring.) I also wish the menu was a little bigger, but I do think that this place is well worth the price, so I definitely give this 8/10 read more

TLDR; Food is good, service is horrible. Small location that does not take reservations anymore and is not first come first serve to walk-ins. Go somewhere else. I've been going to this place for years, even before they moved locations, and I've never been so disappointed. I went here for my 20th birthday with my family and I came early to let them know a big party was arriving in about 10 minutes as it was after 8pm and the location is small. They told me they don't sit incomplete parties and to come back in when they get here so they can put me on a waitlist. Understood, went back to the car for a few minutes and when I came back in they said that a party of 5 came in a couple minutes before I had and that it was going to be about a 40 minute wait. They tried explaining it to me over and over again that they don't work on a first come first serve basis despite me telling them I understood. When I saw empty tables and asked for them to push them together they said they couldn't because then they wouldn't have room for other walk-ins, which would create a wait for them. I told them it was my birthday and asked if there was anything they can do which seemed to make them extremely upset. After finally being seated, our waitress was the same person that I had spoke to originally and she obviously was upset at us. She ignored us multiple times and always seemed so annoyed when we ordered. Barely even saw her most of the night. The only thing that was pleasant about this visit was that the food was delicious as always.
