Great specialty restaurant that specializes in stewed duck and chicken. This is considered health food in Korea. Similar to Jewish penicillin. Duck is the star here. Chicken is good too but if you have it with duck you will notice a huge difference in flavor. The duck with abalone and mushrooms was incredible. The broth taste of healthy herbs. I can feel my body getting stronger just eating this. The marinated seafood is just meh. Wasn't really worth it - maybe I've had too great versions of these dishes in Korea. Decor is just plain but clean. It's BYOB so that's a plus. There is a store ext door where you can get soju and beer. Service was friendly and prompt. They refilled our banchan pretty frequently. Finally, if you want chicken or duck you have to order 60-90 minutes ahead so don't forget to call ahead. This is a specialty restaurant that does a few dishes well. Service was very fast but do note that you have to call and order the Baeksook at least 90 minutes in advance. Ambiance was very casual. Baeksook: 8/10 (extremely large portion size-- one order could easily fill 3-4 people. Lots of chicken and lots of nooreungji. They do require about an hour and a half notice if you want certain things on the menu, so I would just call in beforehand so that you can order and you don't have to wait there. The raw marinated crab is so good! Both the soy and spicy marinades are delicious, even by themselves on rice. The crabs are so meaty and juicy and creamy. You don't even have to eat it with rice, it's so good on its own. The seafood pancake was a really good side dish to add on. Nothing too special on its own but just nice to have and you can dip it in the soy marinade. Today was definitely a day for porridge for me. There is this place in NJ. It is a hole in the wall next to a pool hall. You will find very few signs in English. Very few people know that this place exists or what it serves. Let me tell you it serves porridge, not some ordinary porridge, no Siree Bob, this is not any ordinary porridge. This is porridge made from Korean herbal soup and scorched rice (there are nations that go crazy for scorched rice). In the porridge is black mushrooms, abalone, chicken (or duck) AND Scorched Rice. Please allow me to tell you one more time, this is no ordinary porridge. You have to order this porridge atleast 90 minutes in advance. The tab just for the porridge can be as much as $239. Yes $200 plus for porridge, and you have to order (and pay) atleast 90 minutes in advance. Heat and humidity notwithstanding, I needed the porridge. After finishing work, I drove to this place, Namhan Sansung (500 10th St Palisades Park, NJ). I walked in maybe 30 minutes before closing time and realized that I had not placed the order. I had completely forgotten to place the order for the porridge. Please do not make this mistake. Please order in advance. This is not some ordinary porridge. So, I settled for the next best thing at this joint, soy sauce marinated raw crabs. There is a spicy version too, but just the regular version is spicy enough. These crabs have zero smell and infinite creamy goodness. The crabs come cut along the center, you just squeeze out the meat on the rice, sprinkle the soy marinade and eat it. But these days, I've been really in the mood for these guys, and this dish is perfect. I can understand that for those who have never tried raw crab or shrimp, this dish might come off a bit strange. First, order what you cannot get elsewhere, and that would be the herbal duck and chicken pots that are cooked to order. Need to call at least an hour in advance but they are worth it. Have yet to find a clean broth like this with real herb anywhere else. You can feel that herb warming your body up after the soup. Throw some abalone in there to make the broth even more decadent! The egg salad was especially disappointing with its lack of seasoning and unpleasant gritty texture. Namdo ori-tang was possibly one of the least flavored soups I've had the misfortune to taste. Water is the only proper way to describe this soup as all you could taste is water with hints of red pepper flakes. Water was about the only thing you were getting since the soup only had few sliced vegetables and such a small speck amount of duck that you couldn't even get one spoonful of meat. The duck was cut in such a small size you could barely taste anything besides the ever so abundant water flavor. Very disappointing. Service - 3/5. Service was on the slower side with it taking a long time for them to get back to you on refilling water or bringing the check. Value - 1/5. Their lunch specials shave a dollar off the dinner prices. Sadly there is only two choices on the lunch menu that offer duck, the restaurant's specialty, and one of them has a two order minimum. Of course none of this matters when the food is awful and uses deliberate cost saving techniques like adding next to no duck in your duck soup. Your wallet will feel terrible and conned. They seem to dislike white folks in there.
