Popped in for lunch on way home to SF from Tahoe. Expansive, but still-manageable menu. Truly something for everyone, including picky vegetarian teen. Get the "skirt" with you grilled cheese (extra cheese crinkle around the sando); tuna salad sandwich on toasted sourdough was perfect (just enuf mayo to hold it together) and lots of tuna. Beautiful Belgian waffles. Two outdoor 4-top tables (August) helped us feel COVID safe). Really, so impressed with this local spot. After reading a good amount of the review for this place, we wanted to try it. We went to an event in Auburn and saw that I saved this place under yelp so my wife, daughter and myself went to try it out. Overall I have to give it a 3 star due to the service be good. Food: The food was not what I was expecting. I was thinking with all the great reviews, the food would have been better. I got the chicken fried steak and man it was like shoe leather. I thought that maybe it was just the edges, but dang it was bad all the way through. Now the gravy was really good, so I scrapped it off and put it on my hash browns. Now I paid $14 for that plate and wish I didn't as what I ate of it was worth like $5. The wife got the fresh toast and she said it was good, but she said its hard to mess it up and it was pretty basic. Service: The service was good. Even though they were busy, they came around and offered to fill up our cups of coffee. The owner was our server and she was very nice and was very attentive to the questions we had. Seating area: The diner is VERY small. I got there at the right time and got a table. Right after we sat, I would have to say 10 parties came and had to wait about 30 min. (I heard you can call in and put you name on the waiting list) Last comments: The reason for my 3 stars is simple, the service. They were on it and very nice. Will I come again - probably not, the food was just not that great. I have other place to check out in Auburn as they have a lot of breakfast joints. First time here, Came in for breakfast. No obvious sign except says Restaurant in big yellow letters on the top building. Surprisingly cute inside. I ordered a fresh squeezed o.j. And the Chicken and waffles which were really good. I also ordered the organic maple syrup which I wouldn't do again considering it was $2 and poured pretty thin. Service was excellent. Menu looks great. They offer vegan and vegetarian options. There's NO espressos for my coffee loving freaks. First time here, and first impressions of the service really mattered a bunch! Nancy herself, who waited our table was super energetic and considerable with my family and I along with my grandmother. Whenever we needed something, she's was there in her good spirit and we had a good laugh with her here and there. The food was great and my burger was cooked the way I liked it. When she made a little mistake, she overdelivered! For example, Nancy forgot to get a garlic aioli sauce into my burger, so she was very generous to give me a side of garlic fries. First time here and it was an unpleasant experience. We were third in line to be seated and had no problem with waiting. Twenty minutes later people started paying and tables were opening up. They skipped our names plus two others to sit a couple who checked in 10 minutes after us. We let it slide, but then they take two open tables and put them together for a party that arrived 10 minutes after us as well! We were there with our two young boys and another lady was there with her two kids. We waited for over 30 minutes only to walk out along with others who were just as frustrated. We tried is based on the reviews here on Yelp. The food was good, but the draw is Nancy. She waited in us and was engaging, fun and nice. She is a gracious hostess-making sure those waiting for a table has snacks. We wanted the steak and eggs, but understand steak is ridiculously expensive (it's not being served) and opted for the chicken fried steak. OMG. This place is an instant LOVE. We are going to come here every time we come out to Auburn for hiking from now on to try all the things I wanted but didn't have the room for! They have great vegetarian options. I had "The Mess" with veggie sausage instead of bacon, over-easy egg and a biscuit. It was UH-mazing. You must try the hot sauce they have. I forget the name, but it is vegan, made in small batches and perfect with the food. Oh, AND, the jam they have on the tables is delicious! You must have it on your biscuit! The only suggestion that I have is to have a better sign in the shopping center. It just says "Restaurant" in yellow letters on the building, and it can be hard to find when you're looking for Nancy's Cafe. Maybe it is meant to keep the place a bit of a secret from us out-of-towners. The place has a comfy small-town feel. Stopped in for breakfast while on the road and this place lived up to it's reviews. I don't even like breakfast as I am mostly plant based and always feel left out at a normal diner, but there was an entire vegan menu and lots of options to substitute vegan sausage or bacon. The meat eating member of our group thought his breakfast was amazing too. Their Fire Nine sauce was one of the best sauces I've tasted so I had to buy a bottle to take home. Awesome stop on the way to Tahoe! Stopped by for breakfast and was pleasantly surprised... Classic breakfast food plus they had nice unique healthy dishes. We had the veggie omelet and the mess. Gem of a find in a shopping center in Auburn. Homey interior (in a good way). Very nice and competent staff. Food is clearly fresh made. Had chef salad that was one of the best I've ever had. What i liked: light on the greens, heavy on the fixings. Awesome beef steak tomato slices. Boiled egg was very tender. But, they should be embarrassed by the condition of the french fries they sent out. Should have told me "sorry, we're out of fries today". WOW.... this use to be the old Breakfast club restaurant if I am correct. upon walking up to it, it is a storefront restaurant. and looks like it is one of those restaurants that all the locals go to. I am going to say yes to that one. when we first walked in there was a gentlemen/waiter processing a check at the cash register; he did greet us which was nice and asked us to wait just a bit. another person came up and sat us right away. we ended up getting I think the Owner Nancy wait on us. She was good; it shows.. even with it being busy she was so sociable and efficient! you need to teach 99% of all of the other restaurants how to do it :) the food.. " the bomb" it was soooooo good. Highly recommend coming here for breakfast. we got the three little piggies. filled to the brim with goodness. I had one of there homemade biscuits. it was good, just a little more well done that I like. but still good. my only downfall, and is it a downfall? not really. was the coffee.
