THAT's HALF MY LIFETIME. I moved to the East Coast for college and work nearly 8 years ago, and I STILL come back to Nancy every year for that one perfect haircut. I live in New York City and I have tried almost a dozen different hair dressers who charge you $$$ and can't cut my hair even half as well as Nancy does. It's gotten to the point where if it's November and I know I'll get to come back to Irvine for holidays, I will just NOT get my hair cut even if I look like something from The Grudge because whatever hair dresser I use to tide me over isn't worth it. And then-- because it's Nancy and she cares about YOU and the health of your hair-- when I do get to see Nancy, she always mourns the state of my Grudge-like hair and tells me to take better care of myself. Seriously, that's how good and kind she is. Also, in 13 years, my hair needs have changed quite a bit. Bangs used to be in, then they weren't, then they were. I wanted short pixie cuts for the hot summers in China. Then I wanted super long hair that still looked good even though I had split ends everywhere. Then I wanted something in the middle. Then I wanted a fancy big updo for Prom. Then I wanted BLUE HAIR. Then I wanted to cut off that blue hair. Always, I wanted beautiful layers. Nancy has accommodated it ALL. Every crazy whim I ever had has been lovingly carried out in Nancy's salon, and she has never hesitated to do something new and do it WELL. She really knows how to cut Asian hair, and I have never appreciated that more than I did after I left California. ALSO, her prices??? Unbeatable. I now believe "you get what you pay for" is a lie because a) have you ever tried buying anything from New York City?? and b) Nancy could easily charge more for the fabulous work she does. We all know how difficult it is to find a new hairdresser, especially when we move to another, city, state, or country. To cut a long story short, my trusted hairdresser is overseas because I spend half the time flying back and forth. And, since I'm new to Irvine I knew it was going to come time when I couldn't put off cutting my hair till I went back overseas.....so the search began. I had originally tried another hairdresser in the area, but just wasn't feeling comfortable that she was so crazy busy that her schedule was upside down both times I went there for a wash and cut.....so much so that often times she had to rush me through a cut because there was another client waiting. And, as a result, the quality of the cut suffered. I wasn't too happy and therefore decided it was time for a change. This was when I came back to Yelp to start my search once again.....and narrowed it down to Nancy who had great reviews, was located so close by to my home that I didn't need to travel far, and located in a nice quiet little neighborhood strip mall with plenty of parking. I had called Nancy earlier as I though I'd read that she was by appointment only....she is. A nice bubbly voice answered the phone and I explained that I was a first time called having found her off Yelp and wanted to make an appointment for a cut and wash. It was around 1pm and she told me that I could come in at 4pm....oh wow...I thought she was going to set me up for an appointment the next day, so was pleasantly surprised. I showed up a bit early, but noticed the salon was pretty busy with other customers, and I had no idea what Nancy looked like, so I just sat myself down and waited. The barber came and asked me if I was there for a cut, so I told him yes, I have an appointment with Nancy. Then he points to Nancy sitting at her station ...presumably waiting for me...so, great, we were ready to go. Nancy first asked me what kind of cut I'd like, so I explained the style I'm used to. By the way, my hairdresser who got me started in this style told me always to ask for "Short and Textured" and the hairdresser will know what to do. Nancy gave me the option of using scissors or clippers, so I mentioned that I was used to clippers on the sides and scissor cut on the top. Off she went for a hair wash....whcih was quick, and then back to the seat and she clipped away. I was thinking to myself...hmmm....it's starting out a bit short already. Then she asks me...."is this too short?"....eeeerm, I figured it was a little shorter than I'm used to, but oh well, too late now, so I told her that's fine. When she was done, I thought...hey, this actually wasn't too bad! It was actually a nice clean cut all round, close to what I wanted, and definitely much better than the rushed cut job I had 3 weeks back. I also enjoyed the cut as Nancy seemed like a nice and friendly person and we chatted a bit about different things.....it was nice to get to know more about the person who you're entrusting your hair to :) One last rinse after the cut, a dab of hair clay to style up, and I was ready to go. As I stood up, it occurred to me that we never even discussed what the wash and cut costs. So I told Nancy this and she replied, $xx only.....I thought I'd heard wrongly and looked up at her for a second in disbelief.....as I thought it was going to cost almost double!!! But she jokingly replied....."cheap huh?" ...I gave her a big smile and a tip of more than 20% as I thought she was definitely worth it! See ya again in 3 weeks Nancy! :) read more

I've been coming here for two years now, getting cuts and up-do's with Nancy regularly. She's always so warm and welcoming, salon space is also set up tastefully cozy. It's easy to set up appointments, I just text her and she responds pretty quickly (usually within a couple of hours). Tried calling Kija Hair Salon to schedule an appointment since it was by appointment only for Sundays. No luck. I found Nancy's number and called her. However, no answer. Oh well... I thought. Within 5 minutes, she called me back to schedule an appointment and provided me with a price of $35 for shampoo, haircut, and blow dry. I felt happy since I was very unhappy with my earlier cut that I got the day before. Got to my appointment and was greeted by Nancy - boy, was she nice. She talked to me about how she trained at Toni&Guy Academy and even worked there for 6 years before she decided to venture off on her own. She wanted to specialize in many different things with hair but over there, you have to stick to one speciality - no cross training. Before starting on my hair, she asked me what I wanted and if I had a style in mind (which I did!). I explained to her that I wanted layers (but not layers that would stick out funny), and for her not to cut my bangs. I had prior experience with other hair stylists who would cut my bangs way too thick (I am a thin bangs type of girl). She layered my hair the way I like and kept checking up on me to see if I liked the look so far. At that point, I was sold and I asked her if she could touch up my bangs a bit since I cut them myself yesterday and I am no expert. She did and it looks great! I can tell if it was a good haircut because I don't have to spend much time on it after washing. I had asked Nancy for a blunt cut and to cut it where it would naturally flip under and she did just that. However, she is as terrific as all her reviews say she is. She has amazing intuition and incredible skills. She listens to the issues that I am currently having with my hair - I have curly hair, so there are always a lot of issues. She is VERY reasonably priced and upfront with prices.
