Nando's has recently added bowls onto their menu, and I am a huge fan of their peachy bowl. This included a large portion of seasoned rice, a bed of arugula, roasted red pepper, corn, grilled peaches, and chicken tenders. The contents of the bowl work together well and I especially love the cold grilled peaches that add a pop of freshness and help to cut the heat from the spices on the chicken! I also love adding their garlic sauce into my bowl for another element of flavor and heat. The interior of this location is very cute and I love the decor. Been looking for a Portuguese restaurant in Chicago and I would have to say this isn't really Portuguese food. Not traditional food like I'm used to back home in jersey where we have a big population of Portuguese restaurants. But I wanted to check it out since I've passed by it a handful of times. With that said this place is good for what it is. I like that they had about 5-7 different type of sauces to try with your food. My boyfriend and I for a whole chicken with rice and fries. Ordered garlic bread and a pitcher of sangria. The garlic bread was a regular roll and you could barely taste the garlic. The sangria was too sweet for me. The rice definitely tasted like Spanish rice out of a bag. The chicken was good overall though. The decor of the place was really nice. The young men working here are exceptional. We felt welcomed and valued as soon as we walked in. The staff were at hand, polite and had a heart for service, the food was delicious (chicken bowl, rice, hummus, vegetables) peach tea (!!). The music was lovely African drums and chants (present but not loud). This place is so yummy. The chicken sandwiches are amazing. Fries are really good too. They have tons of sauces to pick from for any level of of spicy you want or don't want. It has only taken me three & a half years to get around to trying them out and what really blows is the realization that I dig it! This means I've been wasting stomach space eating less than stellar chicken elsewhere, when I could've been having some "high quality chicken" right here! (A friend of mine, would lovingly refer to Boston Chicken as "high, quality, chee-kun." This is my usage for the reference.) Of the experiences; the flavors weren't balanced and the spice level was extreme or in another case, the folks trained were not skillful in ensuring the chicken to be moist but dry. Recently I had the chance to catch-up with a friend after attending the evening service at Park Community church (near north location). We hit Nando's on the drive back. The restaurant was quiet on that Sunday evening. However, if you've ever been inside a Nando's you know how lively & festive their African decor can excite the senses. The moving music, the bright colors and the interesting pieces of handicrafts utilized throughout the restaurant. To immerse yourself in all that is exciting of Nando's; one must dine-in. You can't read reviews and think a take-out order would suffice. It doesn't. One must cast off their outerwear and slide into a seat. Get a feel for the surrounds. Allow the music to get under your skin. Take a whiff of the peri peri exciting your nasal passages. Look around the restaurant and see what others are enjoying on their plates. Then decide what you'd like to dine on. In the past three weeks, I've tried the food at three different locations. Not because I set out to do that, just because of finding myself with others that wanted peri-peri. The restaurant is a chain from overseas and bills itself as South African - Portuguese. However, the spice originates from Africa. Nando's sources their spice growth from Mozambique. The story of how peri-peri made its movement from Africa to abroad is an interesting one and worth the read. For me dining in was best and gave me the most rounded experience. I had a 1/2 chicken medium spicy with rice. Their seasoned rice with a side of peri-peri meat reminded me of Indian food. So for me, it was a comforting meal. The chicken was succulent and the rice complimented the meal. Typically I am a sauce fiend and Nando's offers many. So I sampled every sauce realizing in the end that I didn't need any. The meal stood for itself. But, if I had to pick any, most likely the garlic or lemon & herb. In later visits I dined at the Roosevelt location and then had take-out from the site in Skokie, IL. The experience here was best. However, I do not recommend take-out. Having takeout in Skokie, the chicken was dried out and the portion size of side dishes looked miniscule in comparison to what is plated. The best bang for the buck, came with what was served on a plate on-site. At the front of house, staff keeps a singular serving of custard pie sitting curiously by its lonesome. I ordered the 1/4 chicken leg and thigh with 2 sides. I can't eat spicy so I got the lemon herb seasoning and for my two I got the Portuguese rice and Macho peas. I gave this place a second chance on a quiet weekday afternoon, but Nando's is totally overpriced and underwhelming. The little boneless chicken breast was the size of a man's wallet, gristly and still had the skin. The Portuguese Rice was typical store-bought Spanish rice I could've picked up at a grocery store, and the Macho Peas--the only thing I enjoyed--were a tad overherbed. This is one of our go to places to pick up dinner on the way home from work. My husband and I get the full chicken that comes with two sides. The chicken is tender and delicious. The side of corn on the cob is a must in the summertime, and the corn is charred just perfectly. I was not the biggest fan of the mashed potatoes when I tried them once--they were a bit too buttery for my taste. But my husband is obsessed with their coleslaw and raves about how creamy and delicious it is. Went to the restaurant on Diversey, which is a hub for carry out and food delivery so eating at the restaurant is what we do. Been there a couple times. The cashier, Elijah, and grill person, Caleb, were there and provided excellent service and food. Tried the chicken kabob with a specialty sauce. The chicken melted in our mouths. Then had the chicken sandwich medium (Thigh and Mighty) and put more hot peri-peri sauce from the bottle. Yum. Tried the roasted cauliflower. I like the idea of the pumpkin seeds with it but the sweet chilli sauce was too overpowering. They should try another sauce. Other visits I've had 1/4 chicken (ok) and roasted Brussel sprouts (yes order them) and I've had the Rainbow Vegetarian bowl (flavorful and filling). They have some of the history of the peri-peri chilli on the wall. Sounds Portuguese but the chilli is from Mozambique, which was a colony of Portugal until 1975 when the national liberation movement led by FRELIMO (Frente de Libertação de Moçambique) won the war or independence. The portions are good sized for the main courses and the chicken and sides are tasty. The bad: The chicken pitas don't have nearly enough chicken on them, primarily veggies. The prices are too expensive for what you get. They aren't too bad, but if you get more than a regular item it can be more expensive than it needs to be. It was about 70% coleslaw, 25% macaroni, and 5% chicken. The chicken was supposed to be "pulled", and in the picture it looks great. But this looked more like parts that had been stepped on. The macaroni looked and tasted like it came from a can (which macaroni has yet to come in), and it was missing the crispy looking bread crumbs on the top that the picture shows. The coleslaw was fine, but I ordered an extra side of fries and rice. The rice tasted like it had dirt in it, and the fries were cold and felt like they'd been fried hours ago and sitting all day. Not gonna lie, the food is fantastic, but his behavior was totally uncalled for and i would not recommend anyone to visit this place if you have to deal with him. This is the best location of nandos. Quick, efficient, and even though it's not restaurant style, people still continually come up to table to make sure everything is alright/if we need anything else. Chicken lemon & herb spice is delicious. I got the bone in quarter leg, while my friend got the boneless breast - both being very moist. I paired mine with rice, while the other was paired with mash and garlic bread, all pretty tasty. Chicken liver I ordered as "hot" spice. Perfect mild heat for my taste since I'm not into spicy food, but if you're someone who LOVES heat, I'd probably go with their hottest spice. For dessert I tried the nata, which is basically custard, and reminiscent to what they serve in chinese buffets, only this one is twice the size. We tried the swing seating, and let me just say, if you're short like me (5'2) it gets a little awkward since the table becomes almost chest level... but it definitely keeps your digestion going, moving around as you eat!
