Although higher prices than other Japanese restaurants, in my opinion NAO is worth paying a bit more. The staff is Japanese and their food is extremely good. When you go to a Japanese restaurant, and it's consistently packed full of Japanese customers that is a good sign. This is one of the most delicious Sushi restaurants around. Nao has become my favorite sushi place for the last 2 years. I order takeout fairly often and my order has been perfect everytime, even if it is super busy. The service is very good and but sometimes it is so busy you can not get a seat. I would recommend you try the Pacific roll, Negotoro roll, Tamago and the chopped scallop pieces. Incredible sushi for a good price. I wouldn't say it's a 10/10, but it's about as good as it gets in the Lower Mainland. As a majority of people have said here, the food is good quality, and it's a great restaurant. If you have never tried Japanese cuisine, this is a great place to go to. It took me months to finally calm down and review my horrible experience in Nao sushi Highgate. Family of three went there for lunch. One water cup came with old lipstick mark, and a plate with dried rice. The middle-age waitress with very short hair came taking my order (Seafood Kamameshi and three sushi rolls) and when she repeated I noticed that she missed one roll. I called her back before she ran away to correct my order. She was so grumpy and said "Okay! I will repeat your order AGAIN!" I said she could just add the last roll to the paper, no need to repeat the whole thing. Then she suddenly took a step back and waved her arms yelled:"Hey you don't get mad of me!" We were all shocked... Okay, the food. Kamameshi wasn't as tasty as before, too much carrots. The plastic spoon for rice was disgusting. Sush rolls are loose and sloppy. I heard that the the owner opened another restaurant in Coq, maybe he brought good chef and servers over there. For the first time in my life, we didn't leave any tips. I always tip the server even the food is bad. I used to work as a waitress, and I don't think that waiters or waitresses should take the blame for bad chefs. Never go back! Never!!! read more

I've been eating sushi from here for years, before it was called Nao Sushi. I can say with confidence it's one of the best sushi places in Vancouver. The part that stands out to me the most is their fish-to-rice ratio. They're extremely generous with their fish here. The pieces they place on a single nigiri rice is enough for two nigiri. The only downside is the service can be a little slow, but it's understandable considering how busy they are. Honestly, I'd rather order take-out from here and enjoy a quiet dinner at home. They are good at fulfilling large volume take-out orders. read more

Went to NAO yesterday to take out food for 3 people. I will not go back or recommend this restaurant if customer service is important to you. The younger girls were nice but the lady taking the order needs to be friendlier. She was not pleasant nor helpful trying to order. She's the same on the phone as well....and then complains about the phone order to the workers in Japanese of course. Good thing I picked up coffee at Starbucks after as the barista was much more pleasant and let me forgot the experience at NAO so I can eat lunch on a happy mind. read more

SUCKS!!! Nao has changed ownership. Staff are all Mandarin speaking, and food resembles your typical nasty sashimi and rolls. Nao's popular seafood salad with the garlic dressing....gone. Just cubes of tuna & octopus on iceberg and spring mix with...you guessed it, the typical ginger salad dressing and crispy wonton topping. Scallop roll with knockoff mayo, BC roll was all flaky and bland. Agedashi..no flavor. Yakisoba..a tasteless joke. The WORST sushi restaurant I've had. read more

The rolls are good don't get me wrong, they are stuffed with fat chunks of meat and the California rolls are hearty, full of crab, not avocado and have a tiny bit of tempura crunch that is really the cherry on top. The fish is decently fresh( you know the lobster is since they're right there watching you eat), but it didn't knock me off my feet. There are other things I look for in a sushi place, great combos, trays, good deals, nice decor, seemingly bottomless green tea, here those things seemed to be lacking. Good take out? Sure. Lovely place. The service is a good pace, servers are friendly and helpful. The food is fresh and delicious! We had a couple of rolls, tempura, and, I forgot what it was called, but a type of rice with seafood. The sushi was good (and big!), the tempura came hot and crispy right out of the fryer, and the rice and seafood dish was wonderful. Only complaint is that our server thought we ordered two of the seafood rice dish, when we only ordered one and made us a little confused, but luckily they weren't putting a blame on us and gladly fixed it. I've been going to Nao for 10 years and their food is really nice. I just can't get over how bad the service is and has always been. I normally go for lunch but this time went for dinner. Although they have 3 servers for 20 small tables plus a hostess, they just can't cover the tables. You have to ask for everything: water, tea, menus, to order, the bill. If there's a problem with your order, forget it. Your server doesn't come back once your food is delivered. read more

I have been a loyal Nao customer in the past 3 years and noticed since the menus changed, the quality of service have declined significantly. Where do I even begin. 8 pm on a Wednesday and the place is packed. Casual and laid back. Exceptional service from start to finish. The menu was daunting. I couldn't make up my mind. It all looked so good and what I was seeing being deliver to the table around me had me wanting it all. We settled on a few rolls to start. The fire roll was a huge hit! A wonderful marriage of maki and deep fried potatoes how could you go wrong? So good we ordered another.. We had the standards like salmon and tuna, California and Alaska, and the all mighty dragon roll, but the talk of the table was the fire roll. Service was prompt and pleasant. It seemed like everyone enjoyed what their jobs. It was a nice change from the usual service I've found at most Japanese restaurants. A pot of tea was brought to the table in lieu of the standard cup that never gets filled again. They were more than happy to accommodate our staggered ordering. The space between tables is a little tight so that did lead to awkward moments when trying to get in and out of your seat, but it's worth it for what we got. I'm no longer a local, but this little gem is going to be on my must visit list when I'm in town from now on. Job well done Nao! read more

Ordered a lobster sashimi combo. They will use the lobster to make miso soup after you are done with the sashimi. You have the option to add udon to the miso. It is very good value and the quality is really good. Highly recommend. read more

My 3 friends and I ordered the Cottage Tray for $40 to share. I was pleasently surprised with the portion. I liked the smoke salmon roll, and the sashimi was actually ok. I noticed that the box sets were $18. Very pricy. read more

Last Saturday evening, I went to Nao Sushi with my friend. We ordered tempura udon soup and some rolls. Because it was a long weekend evening, there were very crowded. Even though it was 8'o clock, we waited for a long time for our food. when the udon came, it was not hot but it was pretty good. For the rolls, they were not very good. Today was the second time for trying out this restaurant with my boyfriend. We were hoping it would be better than the first visit but for us things had only gotten worse. When waiting to be seated a party of four came through the door and right away one server came and looked right past us and said to the other party to come sit down the man in the other party said we were first, the server said "Oh" and pointed to a table for us to sit at. Two minutes later we ordered our food and slowly noticed whoever was seated after us got their food before us. Still waiting now 30 minutes later I stopped a server and asked if our food is on the way she said she will check for us. Ten minutes later finally one California roll was placed on our table (we ordered four rolls) within twenty minutes our other three rolls finally came. Our last roll to arrive was a chicken teriyaki roll, of course now being in the restaurant for an hour now I was starving so I started eating this roll and spat it out it didn't even taste like chicken. Disgusted, we left that roll and went to pay then we left. Was hoping for better service second time around but got the same bad service the first time. We felt like we were being discriminised against since we were the only other "colour". Save your time and go somewhere else. read more

I loved the place from the first time we tried it. The food and the price is right. Service is good as well, especially when the lady with a ready smile is always there to greet guests. Makes a big difference for a business, I have to know her name. The place is a bit small with the number of diners coming in. There's no time I visited the place that it is not packed. That being said, makes the dining experience a bit uncomfortable...sitting so close to other guests and can barely move nor pass freely especially now that we all wear thick jackets. I guess they placed the tables so close to accommodate more people. Full packed restaurant results in a more humid environment and a smell of seafood is always in the air and sticks to our hair and clothing. I hope they will add a stronger exhaust fan to minimize this. Being a very busy place, sometimes staff will not clean the table well leaving it kind of sticky and obviously there's residue built up. It's a very casual place to dine but I can say it's one of the best sushi places in the Burnaby area. We love their Chicken Yakisoba, wild Salmon Nigiri (learned how to eat this here), Rainbow Roll is a must to try if you visit. read more
