Grilled tilapia taco had good flavor but needed more fish. Buffalo chicken taco was so-so. Burger was bland and boring. Fries were surprisingly great - they were thin/shoestring but not limp or weak like such fries usually are (in my opinion). They were crispy and fresh tasting - I recommend them. Stopped by for lunch on a Sunday and was surprised at how busy it was... Service was great from the hostess through the server and everyone who said hello or good bye in between. We had an order of the chips with salsa and guac for the table, and while I only had 2-3 chips, I could tell that both the chips and the salsa and guac were quite good. I had a braised short rib taco and a pulled pork taco along with fries, and none disappointed. My wife had two of the fish tacos and had good things to say about both. Now on to what I was really happy about, the beer list. Great selection of craft brews - both local (Sweetwater and Terrapin) and not so local (Bells, Duvel, Founders, Ommegang, and Weihenstephaner) quality beers on tap at reasonable prices. I didn't get a great chance to look at the bottle list but it looked equally as good. I do wish there was a current beverage list available online though. Solid bar food. Wouldn't quite describe it as a gastropub, but it's definitely a step up from your neighborhood Chili's. If you're bored on a Friday or Saturday night and looking to take a 40-something drunken divorcee home, then this is definitely the place for you. If that's not your scene, I've been in on a Thursday night to catch the guy with guitar singing bad renditions of Sublime songs while the girl at the bar hooted wildly. It's that kind of place. Or you could just stop in for an afternoon snack. I've sampled my way through the beer list, which is decent, although they always seem to be out of my first choice. Someone may also want to mention to the waitstaff that a black ale and a porter are world's apart. The blood orange mimosa is a good sunday morning pick-me-up, the orange liqueur drowns out the cheap champagne nicely. The menu has plenty of vegetarian options, I've had the peanut curry french fries, the spinach artichoke dip with goat cheese (a little oily on the first go-round, but the flavor was right, and the second time I ordered it, the oiliness was gone), the Napolean's bowl, and the salads. I especially like the bowl, which is full of a little bit of everything (my friend claims to have swallowed a staple while dining on one, but I never saw it) and has a really nice flavor. Meat, seafood, and tofu options are available. Tiramisu is delicious. The boys claim the Napolean's burgers are excellent, and cooked just right. My boyfriend also enjoyed the chicken sandwich. Service leaves something to be desired. Some servers are excellent, some pretty awful. The worst was the server who assured me that there were no mushrooms in the veggie burger before I ordered it. I drove past this place a million times and always thought it was an Italian restaurant. I'm not sure why because it's not. It's more of a suburban, family friendly take on a gastropub. I've been here twice - once for lunch with some coworkers and another time for dinner with my husband. For lunch, I had the veggie burger. I'm pretty sure it was just a Gardenburger and it was okay. Got a side salad with it that was pretty tasty and definitely a step up from iceburg lettuce and a tomato wedge. Napoleon's is in a small shopping center so parking is easy. There's a little patio out front and that's where my husband and I sat. You don't really have a great view of anything besides Lavista or the Fellini's next door, but it's nice to have the outdoor option. We started out with the hummus. I'm a self described hummus snob, but I thought this was pretty decent. It came with lots of pita wedges (I hate it when the hummus to pita ratio isn't right), celery, carrots, tomatoes, cucumbers, olives and big pieces of feta. For my meal, I had the porotbello mushroom bowl. Kind of salty but the idea was good. My husband had a burger. They also have a large selection of tacos that I'd like to try. Neighborhood restaurants nowadays are ruled with loads of chain options. It really has gotten out of control. I truly appreciate Napoleon's as it really does take back this niche for the folks that live near it. This place has really nice menu offerings. Are they inspired dishes, no? Are they great comforting classics with a twist, sure thing. They have a pimento cheeseburger that is really something else. It is insistently well done and they do not over do the ingredients. I also appreciate their unique tweaks that they make to common fare that elevates it up a notch. Their pretzel appetizers comes with a great mustard cheese dipping sauce, their wing sauce is unique and truly their own. Classics do not need to boring, and Napoleon's does a nice job of making sure that despite a menu offering may be standard fare there is something that is unique and enjoyable to each dish. I like the fact that this place is unpretentious on so many levels. This is a huge plus for me. I am just as comfortable there in a suit and tie as I am in shorts and a t-shirt. I am happy to kick back here and enjoy a drink on their outdoor patio anytime. In addition to the food choices, I appreciate their beer selection. There are some nice rotations in of craft beers, and their prices are great. If you need a decent, non chain, non fast food place, and you want to be guaranteed of enjoying yourself in a hassle free setting where food is good and service is good, I would recommend this place. read more

I really enjoyed this place. Great beer list, wide variety of menu choices and a nice patio area that I didnt take advantage of, but plan on it one nice day. I had one small issue and I can tell you this would be insignificant if I wasn't by myself and that is the glasses hang to low to see the TV's. Nice to see the bar has their own cooler for beer and wine. The chicken sandwich I had was cooked on point and I stole their idea for the pasta salad with feta cheese as a garnish ever since I ate there. Overall Go here if in the oak grove area. I am upping the stars because I went back here last night and paid attention to the beer selection this time. They have what they call "no crap on tap" and I really like this. Why waste a tap for a crappy beer like Miller Lite and Bud Light? The 16 selections were a variety of beers from all over and a great selection of ales, lagers, porters and stouts. I live less than a mile away from Napoleon's so it is super convenient for me! Although we sat inside, the patio outside is very quaint and well shaded for evening hours. I would suggest trying the Dirty Southern Fries, they were delicious. They tasted like the perfect combination between fajitas and french fries with all the toppings. For dinner I had the Chicken Club Quesadillas, which were delicious and light. I give this restaurant four stars because it was delicious, our server, Alexander, was helpful with the menu, and the overall service was very quick. read more

I met an owner at Harbor in Decatur, which they also own, not the best but definitely better, and he was friendly. I've been here maybe 5 times to meet friends. The food is overpriced for the quality. The menu is varied (kudos), but ambitious. The place looks clean but when it first opened I found a bug in my cheesecake. This is an example of what I've encountered: I was with my friend who was currently a server. It was between lunch and dinner on a Saturday or Sunday. Hardly anyone was there maybe four to five tables occupied outside and inside. There were at least four servers, so not a lack of hands. My friend was friends with our server. Keep this in mind as our server checked on us 3 times within a span of 3 hours. She took our drink order, came back 15 minutes later with our drinks and took our food order. We did not see her for an hour. My friend had to go inside to get us refills and check on our food. Thirty minutes later our server brought us our food. It was alright. We waited for the bill after we finished. Again my friend had to go inside and get someone else to print off our bill. read more

Only distraction was our server on last visit. She must have been a senior staff member, as she was checking the duties of other servers. She did not write our order down, and each item came out wrong. No modifications; she just entered the wrong orders. Food delivered by her, and there is a hair in the food. No biggie; stuff happens. She immediately blames a co-worker. "We tell her all the time to put her hair back!" She was absent in drink refills and second rounds, but she knew her menu. In fact, she continually corrected the server in adjoining section when said server was answering guest questions. "That's actually wrong, we have this beer...." Love atmosphere and space. I have heard a lot of things about Napoleon's so I finally had to try it for myself. Glad I did. Can only give it 4 stars though b/c I've only been once! We sat on the patio which is a nice touch, especially on a nice night. It is new so I assume they're still tweaking their outdoor scene but it could definitely use some better lighting. A candle or christmas style white lights would do just fine. I was told as a restaurant they served southern food in kind of a unique way so I ordered the fried catfish and a cup of brunswick stew. Way too much food! The stew was good but with the catfish entree I didn't need it. On to the catfish. Two perfectly fried fillets on top of succatash, with a red chili aioli, fresh cilantro and lemon wedges (Which I def recommend squeezing all over your fish). The flavors were awesome. If you've ever had a sweet thai chili sauce; the combo of the aioli, succatash and fried fish kind of resembled that. Never have I had catfish that tasted so good! For the price too, $13.99, it was definitely worth it. My dinner mates had the fried chicken plate and Napoleon Burger with fries. Both were pleased. I sampled the chicken, which was atop rice and collards and it was super moist and delicious. Same price as my catfish but definitely two meals in one. I imagine it would be perfect for lunch the next day. Didn't have a beer but the menu seemed extensive. Would love to go back with a group, sit on the patio and get some cocktails and apps. I am giving this 3 stars but this could easily go up or down. I live within walking distance so I have been excited to check this place out. Finally went Friday night. Atmosphere is good, place looks great. Great patio, good beer selection. Check, check, check in my book. Food was fine. Had the tacos, which were good, nothing special. Taqueria El Vecino has much better tacos, but that's fine. The worst part was the service. We went late when it wasn't peak dinner hours, so it wasn't packed out. But the waitress just didn't take care of us, especially for the fact she wasn't that busy. Had trouble remembering our orders. She would come by and not even ask if we need refills on our drinks. That is the one thing you can do even when you are slammed as a server to keep your table happy. When I did order a drink, it was slow to be delivered. I felt like I had to order my next beer as soon as I got a full one. I have started using the We&Co app to thank people for good service. It's to the point that I am very disappointed when I can't use it. I couldn't find any reason to thank her. This was my 1st time, but my friends and neighbors it was their 3rd time. They said they have had bad service everytime & the food is mediocre. At this point they don't want to go back. This place has a lot of potential so I'm not willing to write it off just yet, but if I receive bad customer service on the next visit them this will be down to a 1 and I probably won't return either. My mom took me here for my birthday. This is one of my favorite neighborhood places. We started the meal with the Corn Chips and trio (Queso, Gaucamole, and Salsa). The chips are an amalgamation of red, blue , yellow corn chips. They were soft, yet crunchy. The red chips are the best. I started with one of my local favorite breweries. A had a Wildheaven Ode De Mercy, followed by an Emergency Drinking Beer. They have 24 craft beers. The bottle beer selection is better than draught. The draught list is mostly big brewers such as Budweiser. Our appetizer costs $9.99. My beers were $5.50 each. My mom had a cup of chili. She said it was pretty good. $4.99. I had the Barbecue Burger well done with fries. The fries are pedestrian. The burger is amazing! It was a juicy, thick party, with pimento cheese and bbq sauce. This is ONE of the best burgers in town. I also recommend the Napoleon Burger. My burger cost $10.99 A great band called the Landing Party provided amazing ambience. If you are in the Oakgrove area make sure to try Napoleon's. We got out for the night under $50. read more

Now that I have sampled most of the menu, I am compelled to report my findings that the food at Napoleon's Grill is consistently good with what looks like a creative seasonal rotation of specials. I miss the chili for example but I hear from management it will be back when those cool breezes flow once again from the north. The atmosphere is casual without the complete bar/pub vibe- but just right for price and the neighborhood's eclectic tastes. Wait staff are engaging and apparently loyal as I understand some had worked with the owners from their other restaurant, Front Page News. I live nearby so the location is very convenient to me. However, I have entertained many out of town clients at Napoleon's and one in particular now requests we eat dinner there whenever possible. He happens to like the beer selection. Sunday brunch is excellent with a unique DIY Bloody Mary Bar and "bottomless Mimosas". I have yet to try their homemade Sangria. AN AWKWARD START TO THE YEAR We are responsible parents who live in the neighborhood and chose to WALK 2 blocks to this pub rather than drive because it was New Years Eve (celebratory drinking) and after dinner at Napoleon's we were planning to WALK around the corner to a party in Sagamore Hills. We don't drink and drive. Liquor store next door was closing at 11 so went over and bought some beer to bring to the party. We put it outside on the porch TIGHTLY TIED UP in a shopping bag--- with the intention of retrieving it once we left Napoleon's. Back inside and before we could take one bite of dinner "Carey" the manager ordered us out of the restaurant and accused us of stashing beer with the intention of consuming it there. He said one of his employees told him they saw us go to liquor store next door and come back with a bag. I replied that yep we needed it for a later event and left it outside for safe keeping. Carey insisted I had a hidden agenda and that my intentions were devious and nefarious. I was horrified as this couldn't be farther from the truth. I'm a 51 year old sweet Mom from the neighborhood for crying out loud. This situation and accusation were wrong, embarrassing, INSULTING, rude and INHOSPITABLE. As responsible adults who live in walking distance, we did not have a car to put the beer in, and we certainly were not going to bring it inside the restaurant. The beer was for another event down in the neighborhood, "gift for hostess" if you will. We spent a lot of money on drinks at the bar where we were seated with friends and food--which we never got a chance to touch. We did nothing wrong and were tossed out like vagabond hustlers. I could not be more disappointed. I called today and expressed this to "Erika" and she was insolent, rude and COMPLETELY ununderstanding. I told Erika that at the very least they owe us the salmon sandwich I was forced to leave behind. But nope, she said, not possible. Having been in the restaurant industry myself (3 years with Ford Fry) I am mortified by how we were treated last night. And how I was just spoken to when I just called. 2020 is one New Years Eve I'll never forget, that's for sure. Boo to Napoleon's for poor service and cringeworthy management. Great family pub with good food. This roomy pub thrives because it really caters to the surrounding neighborhoods. The evenings are filled with families enjoying the night out and the lunch crowd consists of local business folk and retirees. They usually play 80s music and have popular sports on the TVs. The menu is a selections of Mom's most popular dishes like pot roast and burgers. There are also some creative meals and schmancy tacos for the easily bored. There's a big beer selection for the Dads and a gluten-free menu for the sensitive folks. They even have a few ciders. I've had a number of the dishes. The Brunswick stew is very good. The wings are a good portion and the smoked wings are a tasty twist. The sirloin misses but the pot roast is tender with a tasty gravy. The fries are crispy and delicious. The sides that I've had, like green beans, spinach and black beans with rice are pretty standard but a larger portion. The service is great. Whoever runs the floor has made sure that they're focused on genuine service that goes beyond just smiling in an effort to really make you feel welcome.I've had several different servers and they all make be glad I was helped by them. This is not the gastro-pub that foodies should cross town to visit. Owned by the same folks who run both Front Page News locations. I'm giving this place four stars because I had a great experience and I liked what I had here. Started off at the bar waiting for friends. My bartender, Ramsey, was super friendly and accommodating despite some difficulties. It appeared she had to both tend bar, fill tables drink orders, and bus tables. She topped off my beer, as promised, because the initial pour had too much head. And she ended up comping one of my two beers which is always an added bonus (but I gave her an generous tip in gratitude for that). When my friends arrived, I moved to a table. We ordered food and drinks. One of my friends complained about being seated too near the front entrance where we couldn't see the TVs very well; however, the Falcons were winning pretty handily (over the Carolina Panthers), so we didn't need to watch the game anyway. The calamari appetizer I ordered was pretty good. A good mix of rings and tentacles; fresh squid flash fried but perhaps not too perfection - a bit on the greasy side. The aoli dipping sauce was pretty good; however, the second sauce, a sweet peppery dipping sauce, was a little cloying. Wish they had included some fra diavolo dipping sauce; oh well. I ordered the 3 taco basket, with an appetizer of fried green tomatoes. Neither really stood out for me. It wasn't horrible, not by a long shot, but it just didn't have any "punch" to it. I don't mean punch in a spicy way, it just didn't grab the attention of my taste buds. Bland would be too harsh. Just average is the best I can describe. The menu was all over the place, and the concept is francophile for a reason I can't comprehend, but it's a nice addition to the neighborhood (which isn't my neighborhood, by the way). We were actually heading over to see my in-laws and decided to give Napoleon's a shot based on the strong reviews here. Walking in, it had a great pub feel...lots of dark wood, a sizable bar, etc. The menu is pretty damn big itself, packed with a variety of global flavors -- from vindaloo chicken tenders to bulgogi tacos. After several minutes trying to narrow down our options, Nova went the comfort food route while I opted for Italian. Nova seemed to enjoy her mini pot loaf and I, for the most part, liked my ravioli. The serving was plentiful (and flavorful), but the sauce was a tad bitter -- and had enough garlic to ward off vampires. Fortunately for me, we were taking our nieces and nephews to a haunted house after dinner. Even though Napoleon's is nowhere near us, I'd definitely come back when we're doing the family thing. The service was personable, the decor was cozy and the food was better than average. They even had a nice patio with flowers everywhere. I have been here countless times since writing my original review and have never had a bad experience. The lunch and dinner fare is consistently good, the service has always been attentive and friendly, and Grandmother still loves to get a Bloody Mary. These days, we always start our meal off with an order of the spinach and artichoke dip (served with pita slices), and my husband often samples a new beer. The only consistent problem is deciding what the heck to order off of the menu, but my latest menu obsession is the Braised Beef Taco. Holy delicious, Batman. They use the same beef that tops the Mini Pot Roast (I've had that a few times and can see why my Grandmother raved about it before) and in the Braised Beef Napoleon sandwich (which was my go-to choice on a few visits). Basically, I have come to the conclusion that you can't go wrong with ordering something on the menu that incorporates the braised beef. Really, I just love this place and wish I lived closer. Then again, the husband and I would probably end up here every week if that were the case. (I have yet to give them five stars only because we've never been when a band was playing, and given the placement of the stage, I tend to believe what others have said about things getting a little too loud.) read more

Came over here with family because we wanted to sit out on the patio, where our kids' mess and noise would be more bearable. They were able to put a couple of tables together for us. They had crayons for the kids. No one ordered from the official 'dinner entree' section, but everyone was happy with their sandwiches/tacos. I got the Korean BBQ sliders ($8.99). I'm not sure if I particularly liked or disliked the purple cabbage in them, but I was very impressed overall. They weren't sliders, they were full sized sandwiches on egg rolls, with lots of shredded pot-roasty type beef. No skimping on the beef going on. I went with the sweet potato fries, which were fine. Wife got tacos, others got Thai chicken salad, turkey rubens. No one had any problems with any of it. Minuses? Service was good, but it did take a while to get our food. Some patio heater action would have been good (perhaps they haven't put them out yet). Like others have said: I wouldn't drive across town for any of it, but it's a solid choice for pub type food in the area. EDIT: our last visit, early-mid 2013, the dinner menu seemed a bit smaller than it used to be. Maybe a seasonal thing. My ruben was kind of 'ehh'--tasty enough, but the meat was hard to bite through, not *real* typical pastrami/corned beef. Came with a Groupon good for lunch but they accommodated and allowed us to use it for Sunday brunch (semantics but technically I guess they could have said no). Food was ok- I had the eggs benedict and she had chicken and biscuits. Hers was better than average- gravy had a good consistency and flavors while the biscuits had just the right mix of sweetness. Mine was below average. Eggs came out cool- had obviously been sitting for a bit- and frankly there wasn't much. Ham was rubbery and just didn't carry much flavor. The problem was the service. Once food was dropped didn't see our waiter for a good 10+ minutes. Only managed two cups of coffee since even though I was empty when he dropped the food he didn't even ask and then after I asked 10 minutes later I still had to remind him when we saw him come back out with another table's food. I kept watch and other tables were having issues as well- one table got their order wrong and another was waiting and waiting and waiting for the check. Bottom line- breakfast food eh, wouldn't be back, but lunch and beer menu is enough to tempt me one more time. I'll just make sure I have extra time to account for service. read more

Disappointed today, there will be sometime before I return. I have visited this establishment 3 or 4 times before and found the food to be quite good. I like the ambiance and the parking is easy. On my visit this trip something was wrong maybe it was the late Sunday afternoon visit, maybe shift change but my hamburger patty was awful, it was as it was a frozen patty left at the bottom of a freezer for years. I should have sent it back. I do not think management would have allowed this. I will return but will wait a few months. read more

A cut above the regular pub fare....we tried this restaurant after Church on a cold wet Sunday afternoon. No one in our party of four had ever visited Napoleon's before. It's located in a newish strip center and is decorated with deer antler lamps, dark woods, industrial ceilings and the usual TVs but the interior seems a little classier than your average sports bar. The menu is eclectic with brunch served on Sundays. Selections include unusual offerings such as shrimp and grits, salmon BLT, fisherman's stew, burgers with avocados or fried eggs, as well as the usual sliders, fried appetizers and fried fish/chips. We ordered a Lemon Berry French Toast, Salmon BLT, Grouper Sandwich and blackened Grouper with Mac and cheese. For starters we had draws from the extensive beer tap choices and fried calamari with lemon aoli. Everything was above average in presentation and flavor; the calamari crispy and chewy, the grouper cooked just enough to still be moist and not tough; the French toast beautifully plated with a lemony berry sauce and fresh fruit; the salmon BLT on toasted marble rye bread. We cleaned our plates and felt the meal was a good deal for the price. Service was friendly and efficient and our waiter obligingly took our picture for us. Prices reflect the cut above average food too! Don't expect $5 burgers here but do expect to get your money's worth. For six beers, one soda and four entrees plus an appetizer out ticket was $89.24 before tip. read more

Called around December 18th to make reservations for a table for 4 for New Years Eve, early, like around 6:30, 7; was told they can only reserve tables for large parties, but was told if I got there around 6:30 or 7 we should have no problem getting seated. Well, we arrived around 7 New Years Eve, and there were maybe two tables occupied so imagine my surprise when we were told "all tables are reserved." Even the booths, for 4 people. I explained I had called to make a reservation two weeks earlier and was told I couldn't. Do you think they tried to make things right? Nope. Just said sorry, no can do. We left and went to Chris' Pizza in Toco Hills and had a lovely dinner so Napoleons horrible customer service didn't ruin our New Years Eve dinner. Won't be spending any money there ever. read more

Legit service, and awesome trivia!! I was one of last to join my table of friends last week, but apparently they'd been tucked away in the corner for a while without a waitress stopping by.... so the manager came by herself, apologized, and proceeded to comp two platters of chips (including AWESOME queso that I really think was just REAL melted cheese, as it congealed after it cooled as non-uberly processed cheeses are prone to do; guac that was otherwise unremarkable, and salsa that failed to leave any impression upon me as well). But the waitress that was assigned to us shortly thereafter was great--very attentive even though our table was in the farthest reaches of the dining space. Didn't try the beers, but the grilled cheese sandwich that I ordered as a "kids meal" was a really decently sized portion! I had to request help from trivia teammates in finishing the colossal pile of deliciously crispy fries. I'm not generally a trivia type-o-girl, but there was a real variety of questions last week that allowed almost everyone at the table to contribute a bit of knowledge. I'm a bit less savvy on the pop culture or history bits than I perhaps should be, so I was personally excited to be able to contribute to the more nerd-centric physics and bio questions! We eat here pretty frequently. The food is quite good; my husband is obsessed with the pot roast. However... there don't seem to be any grownups in charge in the front of the house. The servers don't seem to get any training or support (this is also the case in the Vista Room next door). I think it's one of those places where they just hire people and seem to assume that since they've been to a restaurant, they know how to wait tables. My friends and I have a running joke about how poorly the servers know the beer/wine list and how often whatever beer we want is sold out (except the servers never know this until they take your order and go back to the bar to get your drinks; sometimes this happens several times until you give up and just order some other kind of drink). If the availability changed so often, why not print a separate beer list? But the servers should also know what they do and don't have. We had dinner there last night and our server told us they used to have a rose wine, but now they have "bibi, or bibo, or something... I really don't know." Also last night, we were there pretty early for dinner and there were lots of unoccupied tables, but we felt like the server was trying to rush us out. He tried to grab both our plates while we both literally had our forks in our hands. Also never offered water. This is a problem for a lot of reasons, but a big reason is because the food is not that cheap. Even at a casual restaurant, I expect a certain level of professionalism in the service. And every single time we go to Napoleon's (or the Vista Room), we get a server who is friendly but just uninformed and unprofessional. I imagine it's frustrating for them as well... again, they just don't seem to get the information they need to do their jobs well. I've been to many bars/restaurants where the servers know exactly which beers on the list they do and don't have available. It's not that hard. Another thing that really screws up a not-inexpensive meal here is the noise from the Vista Room next door. While we were eating dinner last night, the band was doing a sound check, which you could hear pretty clearly through the wall. The stereo remained on in Napoleon's, so between that and the band it was quite a cacophany. Really stressed us out. Again, if I were paying a few bucks for a taco in a dive bar, I'd tolerate that. But eating at a place like Napoleon's is a pretty big spend for us, and I expect a better experience. Ideally, they'd do sound checks earlier in the day when the restaurant isn't busy. Again, the food here is good. But there's a lot of good food to be had in the area, and even at the cheaper places the service is often significantly better. I'd suggest they put a grownup in charge of the FOH and give their servers some training, as well as daily updates on the menu and beer/wine list.
