Steinbecks was a cool pub with great food! Parking is plentiful in the back or just around the area, and even though it gets busy, the tables open up pretty fast. They tend to have different specials that all sound pretty good, but I went with their famous tower of power burger with eggplant fries. I didn't get a drink either, but heard from friends all the drinks were good! I can def see why the burgers are award winning - the meat was cooked perfectly and was super tender and I loved the sauce that came with it. I should have gotten regular fries though because the eggplant fries were kinda disappointing and flavorless. It came with lettuce, tomato, thousand island (I assume), bacon, and toasted bun. The eggplant fries were delightful. A little heavy (but they are fried, so). They are topped with oil and crushed red pepper. A little too saturated for taste. Next time just give a good dipping sauce. Beer selection was okay. First time brunch there, January 1 2024 was a stand-out experience: the waiter, the neighborhood vibe, fresh ingredients, innovative cooking without being fussy or precious. I was in LOVE & imagined walking there on the regular when the weather warmed up. Second time brunch: Feb 11th. Menu had changed to meat heavy, eggs with everything choices. Fish sandwich was no more. If we had a helpful waiter very minor changes would have made several of the offerings possible as vegetables are prepared thoughtfully. However, we had a waiter who seemed to be personally offended by my question, "What would you suggest if I don't eat beef or pork or eggs?" He looked at me as if I had 3 heads and I felt judged - oh you are one of THOSE people. So I had a $5 bowl of potatoes. I feel 90% confident that a quick word with the chef would have resulted in my eating a proper menu item - and a completely different review - but I will never know that. The waiter then went on to try to upsell us to having shots. I will never know if the chef was agreeable and could pivot to drop the pork belly off the noodle dish - and I doubt I will ever return to this establishment to find out. It's a shame. read more

In a proper Irish pub, I feel like Mark Wahlberg could walk in at any moment. He'll sit down at my table, invite me on some kind of bare-knuckle adventure. There will be witty, old-boy banter. We'll go on a tear across the city, probably taking down the Boston mob or something. The women we meet will be beautiful but mysteriously chaste. There will be heavy-handed catholic iconography, probably some very old churches. In the end, we will discover that the problems of the human condition were inside our hearts this whole time. There will be spiritual growth by means of a boxing match. Steinbeck's makes me feel like this, oh yes. John Steinbeck was Irish-American, and the blend makes sense here. Sure, it's a little different than the setup in my native northeast. The snug spots for sitting are outside, to take advantage of our warm climate. They serve a perfect Guinness pour (classic!) and a very nice cocktail program. Craft beer abounds, but the list is thoughtfully curated instead of being too-much. The kitchen serves elevated comfort food; think brisket hash, house-smoked wings, extremely high-quality burgers. The menu is very forward-looking while giving a shout to traditional pub fare. Love this place! Just a small kind of hole in the wall place with great friendly service and killer burgers. Oh, the beer is pretty damn good too! We walked over to Oakhurst on Saturday for lunch, we were (or at least I was) pretty hot by the time we arrived and thank goodness we ate inside. We ordered some waters and some beers. I had the Tower Of Power burger, and darn it, forgot to order the smoked wings. Probably would have had to roll me back home. The burger REALLY hit the spot, just really tasty. And the fries were crispy to the last one. And I noticed they had Guinness on tap, I think this is the first place in the states where I have seen it on tap so I had to have one. Good stuff. Even though they had a limited menu and were dealing with large crowds both at the bar and on the patio, we had a marvelous time and enjoyed delicious adult beverages (Love the Leah's margarita!) along with an appetizer of fried eggplant, which was the only GF item available (sans sauce for me.) Full disclosure: I've been a fan of Chef Andy Gonzales for well over a decade, since his time at South City Kitchen Midtown. I love his style of cooking, melding various flavors and cuisines for optimum deliciousness. It's small inside, but patio seating is available. the establishment is also pet friendly. The food overall was good. We ordered their burger, which was awarded the best in Atlanta. We agree that it is an award winning burger! The smoked wings were also very good. The flavor was excellent, but I would have liked them a bit harder. I ordered the brussels/califlower as a side. I don't know the history of Steinbeck's, but one of the signs outside says it's been around since 1902. Wow. This is a small ale house located in Oakhurst, a historic neighborhood in southwest Decatur. The inside has seating for only about 30 folks (9 at the bar), but the dog-friendly patio outside has space for about 24 more. The patio looks like a great spot for when the weather is nice. There's one TV inside for sports viewing. While Steinbeck's has the look and feel of a traditional Irish pub, the food menu features a variety of cuisines including American Southern (buttermilk fried chicken), Asian (Szechuan eggplant), Mexican (fish tacos), and in-between (Vietnamese chicken tortas). We came here to try the restaurant's Double-Double burger, which was prominently featured on the cover of Atlanta Magazine's January 2015 issue covering the 20 best burgers in/around the city. Steinbeck's burger landed at #8 on the subjective list. I was told by server Amy the burger consists of two 4-ounce patties (equaling about half a pound total), shredded lettuce, cheese, tomato, bacon, and housemade "Million Island" dressing. This is Steinbeck's take on the In-N-Out burger right down to the name (Double-Double) and description ("Animal style"). The only exception is Steinbeck's version has bacon and In-N-Out's doesn't. Million Island dressing is Steinbeck's version of In-N-Out's spread, which is similar to Thousand Island dressing. When all is said and done, Steinbeck's Double-Double is a pretty darn good burger, regardless of emulation. I've had my fair share of In-N-Out burgers (http://www.yelp.com/list/in-n-out-burger-daly-city) and, while tasty, I'm not as fervent a fan of them as so many are. Steinbeck's medium-cooked patties are lean, meaty, slightly juicy, and wonderfully flavorful. The lettuce is crisp and the sliced tomato ripe. The strips of bacon are thick and chewy. It all makes for one satisfying and filling burger. Funny enough, the burger reminds me most of McDonald's Big Mac (Hey, I love a good Big Mac every now and then!), like a bigger, gourmet, homemade Big Mac. It must be the Million Island spread. The burger is $9.50. Other menu items range from $5-8 each for appetizers and snacks and $10-20 each for entrees. Other items I've tried include the Green Finger Chilies, Chinese Breakfast, and Crispy Szechuan Eggplant -- all good. The Green Finger Chilies are a fun, different kind of bar snack. Made with soy and black vinegar, the bite-sized chilies are definitely Asian in flavor and are mildly spicy (basically non-spicy to me). Good flavor. I was surprised to see Crispy Szechuan Eggplant on the menu. Steinbeck's rendition of the Tasty China/Gu's Bistro favorite is quite respectful and I believe the only Szechuan eggplant you're going to find on this side of town. It's appropriately made with red peppers and chili powder along with fresh cilantro. Crispy and savory. I recommend. Robin S commented to me the Chinese Breakfast reminded him of Korean bibimbap (mixed rice). I can see why. The Chinese Breakfast is a bowl of white jasmine rice topped with an egg (sunny side up), roasted pork belly pieces, and wilted leeks. This original Steinbeck's creation has all the makings of comfort food. Mix everything together and enjoy. There are adequate portions of glistening pork belly, plenty of chopped leeks, and a hint of soy in this gratifying bowl of food. My only critique is overall, the dish is a bit too oily. The staff is friendly and accommodating. You can park for free in the attached parking lot or on the street. read more

We left just seconds after entering the building. As my family of 5 went through the entrance, we were standing there, waiting for some sign of somebody who worked there, but could not find anyone. As we stood there in the entrance lost and confused, a waiter was standing outside, trying to get in. He threw his arms up in frustration, and shoved past my mother and basically shoulder checked my father, and as he is walking away, without even looking at us, he says "Find an open seat, I will bring menus out". I know this doesn't sound that bad, but his aggrieved tone, just the way he said it was of annoyance and irritation. Don't even bother going here. Go anywhere else in this area and you will see clogged toilets with a better work ethic than this guy. read more

My favorite staff are Jimmy and Ivan. First let us discuss THE WINGS !!! They are roasted - NOT hard fried. Words the customers use to describe the wings are tasty, meaty, roasted, succulent, chewy, and filling. These wings earn my vote for BEST IN ATLANTA. I eat a lot of wings since I'm on a ketogenic diet. Mmmmm you will need a few extra napkins when you eat these 12 wings for $12. Next - the umami sauce is yummy. Here's a mnemonic to help you remember to ask for the sauce: "Umami- yummi." This Irish gentleman James is a character and the Crown jewel (an emerald of course) of the establishment. He is one of the owners works his butt off too! He made me laugh so much with his Irish wit and sarcasm. He appears to be a pessimist since he constantly mutters angry comments - NOT under his breath. However, the anger is just a screen to cover his tender sensitive heart. If you want to see irascible hot headed Jimmy complain about how your Guinness was poured. My other favorite is Ivan. This young man also has a big heart. He busts his rear end pulling beers, serving food, and telling stories. One of his most difficult jobs is being patient with intoxicated upper middle class parents who are overly enthusiastic about a night off from their children. To preface, the food was to go, so the quality could and probably might be better in person, fresh, and plated properly. Broccoli This was the only dish of which I wasn't a fan. The Cheetos were a tad bit stale and the quantity of broccoli was limited.However, there was a lot of rice. And I did like the flavor of the mornay sauce. The mornay sauce would definitely have benefited from eating it fresh at the restaurant. Kung pao smoked brisket The flavors were outstanding. And I would gladly get it again. My one issue, there wasn't a lot of brisket, but tons of rice. I'm personally fine with smaller meat portions, but there could've been more celery to make up for it. The chili paste, celery, and brisket really worked well together though. The tower of power This was my partners dish. I only had a bite so I can't give a full review on this, but the one bite I had was good. The dressing, the cook, everything. Even the fries were on point. Definitely recommend. However, the one thing I can't really say is if you'll feel heavy after eating the whole thing lol. Definitely a neighborhood favorite and I can see why! Came here to celebrate my little sis's bday for lunch. There's almost as much outside seating as there is inside, so not much at all, but it's a very charming place. The staff is really nice, even though they were really busy when we got there, they made sure that they came by and acknowledged us. Small but great beer selection (I had the Ayinger brauweisse) We all shared the umami fries, which were delickery. The savory scallion pancakes were a bit doughy, with a gummy stick to the roof of your mouth feel, but overall the taste was good, and the fish and chips were outstanding. This neighborhood pub is the best place to grab a bite and sample amazingly creative food. Steinbeck is located right in Oakhurst Square. It is usually not super browsers (shhh.. don't let the secret out). The menu is small but your mouth and stomach will thank you for the quality, variety, and the creativity of the food. They have the best house burger (the original house burger topped with pimento cheese). It's not on the menu but they are available upon request. The beer is always excellent if you are a beer aficionado. The tap rotates year round and always have a sample of good local brewers. Tonight we ordered their original house pimento cheese burger, tomato toast, crispy Brussels in nuoc cham, crispy chicken Sammy, beans in crab broth, and a fattoush salad. All the dishes were prepared perfectly and tasted delicious. To say that this place serves pub food would be an understatement. The dishes often have an Asian influence but not overly so. The chef strikes a nice balance of showing off the nuances of Asian cuisines without pretending to serve a traditional Asian cuisine. The Chinese breakfast, a rice dish with smoked pork belly, nuoc Cham, sautéed veggies, and egg is an all time favorite is one of our family's favorites and can be ordered for lunch and dinner. The restaurant is small with a handful of indoor seating and 5-6 outside tables. Recently, they added exterior booths to increase outdoor seating capacity. There is a fan outside for those hot summer nights. The wait staff is always very nice although some nights they are clearly overwhelmed with just a couple of staff serving the whole restaurant. One of the better Decatur pub destinations, which is saying a lot. I've been here a number of times and have always been pleased. Last night, Chinese breakfast and Smuttynose IPA. Chinese breakfast is reminiscent of Korean bi-bim-bap: various fried, sauteed or otherwise cooked 'stuff' on top of rice. In this case a fried egg, pork belly, leeks and maybe something else. Mix it all up for a delicious meal. Probably not the choice for those with high cholesterol. Steinbeck's is small but has a nice patio (with good weather). read more
