This place is busy busy busy. I'm not sure what the consensus in the area is (because I am not a local) but I think it could be a bit overhyped. While the food was good, it wasn't great and I do think it is a tad overpriced. Although comparative to other options in the area, I think it's probably one of the better spots. I did appreciate that the fries seemed fresh and not frozen (who knows if that's true or not). I had a tuna melt and it was good but didn't blow me away. The sandwich was cold overall, and cold toasted bread just isn't my favorite (Maybe that's how a tuna melt is supposed to be? I don't know but I didn't like it). read more

When people think deli, they rarely think "Atlanta". And to be fair, this is not a deli town, at least compared to northeast cities. Yet, there is only one exception that every self respecting deli lover will bring up and that is generally The General Muir. Located in a cookie cutter apartment complex in the Emory area, The General Muir gets its name from the ship that brought the Holocaust Survivor and co-owner Jennifer Johnson's family to New York in 1949. Their ancestors' photographs are across the walls with a clearly contemporary design that still respects the traditional deli interior. The pastrami Ruben is their signature dish and unquestionably excellent. Bread is baked next door, the amount of pastrami is perfect for the amount of bread without going into carnivore overload mode. In other words, it's balanced. The one thing that is certainly a matter of taste is the fattiness of the pastrami here, which gets into borderline bacon territory. The potato salad is spectacular, not over drenched in sauce, perfectly cooked potatoes and just great. On the way out, probably not such a bad idea to pick up some freshly baked bread next door. read more

Came here for Valentine's Day dinner with a pal! I can say that it was a really great choice for a special occasion dinner: the ambiance, music, lighting, and overall vibe were fantastic. Because we were there for Valentines, they offered a special menu, which was a fun mix-up to have the option for (in addition to some of their usual classic menu favorites)! The special menu felt super thoughtfully planned, but in the end, I did not feel like OVERJOYED that we picked this spot for this price. Our total was basically $100pp when it was all said and done, and while it was a treat to get a four course meal, I felt like $100pp elsewhere could have gone a lot farther AND gotten me more of what I like! Jewish deli-style spots are few and far between where I live in central FL so this place was a genuinely pleasant surprise. We stopped in for brunch and really enjoyed our meal. I ordered the nova on an everything bagel, and the lox was fresh, buttery, and exactly what I was hoping for. I also tried the matzoh ball soup which had a flavorful broth and a matzoh ball with the perfect texture, not too dense and not too soft IYKYK... My husband had the pastrami and said it tasted authentic and lean. On our way out, we grabbed a fresh challah for $6. The only miss for us was the black and white cookie, which you can probably skip. The restaurant itself is large, clean, and inviting, and the staff was friendly and attentive throughout our visit. General Muir is traditional Jewish food done right, and it is absolutely one of my favorite dining spots in Atlanta! The staff/servers are friendly and helpful. I've not had one negative experience here and the food- delish! Servings are generous, bagels and pastries are made in house, and the pastrami goes through quite a process of a10 day brine, 6 hour slow cook and 6 hour steam. Highlights on our meals the last two days: *General Muir- 2 eggs cooked your way, crispy pastrami, Latkes - loved my General Muir breakfast with perfectly cooked poached eggs. *Avenue A is a party in your mouth! Do yourself a favor and request an everything bagel rather than regular. Still love this place after all of these years. Been going here over ten years and never tire of it. Over the last 3 months we have had 2 breakfast/brunch's, 3 lunches and 2 were for dinner on a Sunday night which is their special Spaghetti night. We are pretty plain. Order a lot of the same thing. For breakfast we are hung up on the fluffy omelet filled with borsin cheese and served with a small green salad drizzled with a mustard vinaigrette. The omelet is one of the lightest we have ever had and it is huge. Always have a side bagel with veggie cream cheese. The second dishes were the pecan crusted French Toast and the second trip the Pastrami Sandwich topped with an egg(cooked to order), America cheese and Russian dressing. Oh, my, the pastrami sandwich was out of this world good. The French Toast I could skip next time...but the pastrami sandwich I will probably never skip. Wish they had it for lunch. Dinner is always a Spaghetti dinner. Huge bowl of spaghetti with meatballs, a side salad, a roll, and a dessert. What a deal. And it is so big that we are able to split it. What a bargain. Lunches have consisted of a Cheeseburger and/or a Pastrami Sandwich. Both are equally as good. Both also might be the best in Atlanta. Both served with perfection and both are served with a side of fries or your choice of another side...but the fries always win! Highly recommend. Free two-hour parking in the garage across the way. The burger was juicy, perfectly cooked, and packed with flavor--simple, classic, and done right. The turkey sandwich was surprisingly memorable: tender, flavorful turkey with fresh ingredients that didn't feel dry or boring like so many deli versions do. The real star, though, was the Reuben. Generous without being greasy, perfectly balanced with tangy sauerkraut, melty cheese, and just the right amount of dressing. Comfort food at its best. We've been to this location several times and always enjoy it. The service is always great, and the food is consistently well-prepared and delicious. There can be a bit of a wait--especially on weekends--so plan accordingly. If you park in the deck across from the restaurant, they will validate your parking when you pay for your meal. Just a heads up: it can get loud inside, particularly when it's a full house. That said, we've always had fast, friendly service. We love The General Muir so much that we frequently place to-go orders. If you're going for brunch, I highly recommend the French toast. The portion is generous (I couldn't finish it!), and the bread is dense, warm, and soaked in syrup--definitely worth trying. I've had the Chicken Club a few times and have to say, it's the best chicken salad I've ever had. But what we've ordered the most is the pastrami sandwich--it's perfection! I chose coleslaw and it was great, not sweet and very crisp. The rye bread was incredibly fresh, on par with Second Avenue Deli and Katz's in NYC. The pastrami was good, not Katz's level but very good and fresh. We also shared the poutine, which was pretty good. My friend got the butternut squash soup and half a Reuben sandwich, which she liked. The decor is nice, and despite the place being full it was not too loud. My friend and I felt like we had plenty of space. Parking tip, the meter maid is very active. My friend got a ticket for overstaying her time, and I watched someone else get a ticket too. One of our most enjoyable dinners in a long time. The great reviews on their pastrami sandwiches inspired us to drive into town from Lawrenceville and I'm so happy we did. We were expecting a more casual deli type eatery but instead found a clean, modern, crisp room, tasteful, with candles on the tables which I assume was their dinner setup. (and they take reservations in the evening) Our waiter, Jackson, couldn't have been better. He was so personable and helpful and the service was better than many high end restaurants I've been to. The wait staff seem to be efficient yet invisible, showing up with perfect timing to see if you needed anything and then slipping away, you never felt crowded. Several other servers said hello as they passed by and the atmosphere was just very friendly and welcoming. Our pastrami Reuben was excellent, tender meat and gooey melted Swiss with sauerkraut on grilled rye. My fries were plentiful, but better yet, hot and crisp, just perfect. My husbands potato salad was so good (the fresh dill was a nice addition) we took an extra container home with us to keep us from fighting over the leftovers. All in all, I can't say enough about what a nice evening we had, we'll be back for sure, maybe for lunch when we're in the area, which is often. The shop is somewhat noisy but not over the top. They have indoor seating as well as patio seating for the restaurant. It's a large space though so there should be seating for everyone. I have gotten the double stack burger and the chicken club. The burger was a solid burger. It didn't have any fancy bells or whistles but it was a solid and well made burger b perfect level of flavor and juiciness. Comes with cheese and onions and Mayo and a pickle. The club was okay. Now see I didn't read the description of it and I was probably my fault but it was actually chicken salad, and not sliced meat like you would expect on a club sandwich. I wasn't too crazy about that. You still had everything it needed to and it was still pretty good. But when you have your mouth ready to taste an actual club sandwich, you really don't want chicken salad. LOL. Joe, even though it was pretty decent, probably wouldn't go for that again. That was my fault, so I wont hold that against the rating at all! Overall I had a good experience. I sat at the bar and had some good conversation as well as a good meal. I can't stress enough, that burger was a solidly built Burger and I would definitely go back for that. Somewhere between a 4 and 4.5! Overall a good Sunday spaghetti dinner. For $32 you get a small house salad, spaghetti and meatballs, a garlic knot, and seasonal dessert. The salad was tasty and the spaghetti and meatballs were fresh and also very good. The seasonal dessert was rice pudding which was decent but not something I would've ever ordered myself. The online menus say that the dinner is $28, and past reviews have prices much lower. While times have changed, this dinner was solid but didn't necessarily feel like a good deal or anything special. Been so long since we were here last. We came in on Saturday around 11 am, and while the restaurant was bustling, we were able to snag a table for two. Our server, Nyesha (sp?) greeted us with a bright smile and friendly demeanor. She brought us water and took our coffee orders, a Cubano for me and coffee for my husband. The cubano was nice and strong with a hint of sweetness. When we got our drinks, we placed our order. I ordered the fish and potatoes, and my husband The Maven platter. They were super busy and there was quite a wait for our food. My fish and potatoes was served with 2 perfectly crisped latkes on top of sour cream and a decent portion of nova with arugula and apples. What a flavor bomb in the mouth! My husband ordered the behemoth of The Maven that could easily be shared between 2 people, or if you love lox and bagels as much as my husband, could feed one lol. He got his with everything bagels and scallion cream cheese. Personally, I loved the white fish on his platter - it was nice and smoky. Service kind of slowed down once we got our food. Plus we were cutting it close to parking ending time. We parked at the LAZ parking spots in front and they are SUPER STRICT with parking. We saw a few cars getting ticketed. To avoid this mess, park at the deck and you get 2 hr validation. We were in a rush leaving the restaurant, and service was so slow towards the end that we were scared we'd get ticketed. The ticket man was quite literally waiting until our time ended but he saw head towards the car by then. I've only been here during brunch but would love to try their dinner items as well. The food at General Muir is really good, and the restaurant itself has a nice atmosphere, with a well-designed interior and a pleasant outdoor patio. However, I find the prices high for what you're getting. For example, I really enjoy the burger, but for a no-frills burger and fries, nearly $20 feels excessive same with their Reuben, which is a whopping $20. Their Avenue A bagel is also great, but at $18, it's steep. While I do think the food is good, their pricing feels like a prime example of Atlanta surge pricing at its worst, combined with convenience pricing due to its location near apartments that house many affluent Emory students. Also if you order online Togo make sure you have everything you ordered before you leave, there seems to be a constant miss comunication on togo orders and have experienced missing items on numerous occasions. Alas, that place closed and I'm having to go to the one in Emory, which is this location that I am reviewing. Is definitely much more crowded and busier and I think they have a staffing shortage. When I had asked for my sticky bun that I always order first so that it comes eventually it came without any sides . I remember order it in my past and it was always a complete button with sides. I was told that they make it in a large pad now and they have to cut it out. Which makes the bun look naked without its sides. It also produces as much smaller serving! when I told the server I didn't want it so small he went back and asked the deli and they said that's all they had. I refused it and eventually the manager came out on his own and said I would like to try to fix the situation. He came back with a whole sticky bun much larger serving size, and I accepted it. Niles, the manager on duty was on the ball for coming on his own and asking me how he could fix the situation! I also ordered the matzoh ball soup in which I didn't know they only give you one matzo ball, which is not what I had in the past. I will evaluate whether or not it's worth $10 , the soup was served cold. While I've always enjoyed my sticky bun... I guess I'm having to reevaluate whether it's worth going all the way to Emory to get this. The restaurant is nice, open with good lighting. The wait staff is great. I tried a bagel with smoked salmon, salmon roe and cucumbers. It was delicious and smoky, though I couldn't taste the roe. Their seasonal gingerbread chai iced and the smoked hash were my favorite. This all came to around $60. Parking is validated for the parking garage down the street. This felt like a Jewish delicatessen from NY and I was happily surprised when I saw pastrami and black cake on the menu. My home is NY and these sort of places always bring me back there. I came here for breakfast and was absolutely delighted. It has an old school diner feel with elevated items. The service was great, they checked in regularly and quickly got us our food. There are two all start items, though everything we ordered was tasty. The French toast is fluffy, creamy and crunchy. Absolutely the best French toast I've ever had. The second was the cardamom bun which is served warm and flakey. Both of these items are worth the trip to the general Muir on its own. We got latkes, bagels, eggs and potatoes in various combinations. All were delicious and tasty. The bagels are chewy and they have great cream cheese options. If you don't want to sit down and wait they offer a coffee shop style where you can get baked goods and bagels to go. Their coffee is solid, but with such good baked goods it didn't stand out. I was getting lunch with a coworker and we wanted to meet somewhere by Emory/Druid Hills so we decided to check out The General Muir! It's been on my list for a while, especially since it got Michelin recognition! Finding it in Emory Point is pretty easy and luckily there's a deck right across from it that you can get validated parking for up to 3 hours. (This information was also available on their website which I LOVE when restaurants include that!). The space inside is so elegant and chic! It feels super bright and airy and there's plenty of seating options between the patio and inside. I want to come back and try their brunch. My coworker got a bagel while I got the half Matzo ball soup and a half turkey sandwich. The soup was so delicious and I loved the fresh dill sprinkled on top. The turkey sandwich was also super great and the lemon spread it came with was surprising but worked so well! Our waiter was also phenomenal, checked in on us plenty of times and kept our water glasses filled but never intrusive. Overall, awesome service, vibes, and food, what more can you ask for?? This place was amazing!! We dined on the patio as the weather was amazing!! The food was delicious and fresh!!! Their pickles are made on location so I think I'm in love!!! So crunchy!! So fresh!!! Deliciousness!! The service put the icing on the top!! We will definitely return!! read more

I had pastrami for the first recently while visiting New York. I instantly fell in love and immediately began a search for a similar place here in Atlanta. The General Muir tops everyone. The loaded pastrami was amazing!!! Dare I say better than New York's Friedmans Restaurant. read more

We were super excited to eat here unfortunately we chose not to after the staff and MOD were incredibly rude and discriminatory towards me and my service animal. I am a below the knee amputee who needs my medical aide dog. Both hostess and MOD told me we have to sit out side, I repeated multiple times no- this is my service animal, she flys frequently, travels with me, is trained and needs to be with me. The manager THEN went to read me the Atlanta laws out loud that were posted near the hostess desk, that then proved me right on the ADA and service animal laws. Duh. They then sat us but we had such a bad taste in our mouths we left. BOO. SHAME ON TGM. We both paid $9 each for parking. Be better. And also refund us for our parking that was a waste. read more

Disappointed. I've had great and moderately okay meals at TGM, never consistent. But never bad, until this evening. I ordered the short ribs and they were dry, flavorless and barely lukewarm. The recipe has changed from previous visits and is oddly unappealing with the mint topping. To their credit the okra was delicious albeit greasy and the puréed corn was just there to fill the plate. I recall the first time I had their short ribs and how enthusiastic our server was about them and back then he was spot on. I honestly think they know these short ribs are not good. I noticed our previous server and our current server looked and saw that most of my food was not consumed. Yet, no one inquired. That too was disappointing. I have great memories of my first visit to TGM, but sadly it can't say I'll be back anytime in the future. read more
