Soft Opening Review To be fair this is a review based on their soft opening sign. They had been opened for two weeks when I came in to dine. Here is my feedback: Number 1, service was horrible. 2 female servers available and 4 senior sushi chefs behind the counter was visible. I was not acknowledged upon entering, forgotten about after being sat, had to ask for everything. The server took my order after 10 min and it took another 20 minutes for any food to arrive at my table. Keep in mind I was the only person at the restaurant! Food - I ordered a mixture of prepared hot kitchen food and sushi. From perusing their full sushi roll menu, Their creative names and items tells me they cater mostly to those who like spicy rolls and different rolls. If you're willing to try beyond the cream cheese and venture into jalapeños, a Japanese ginger etc. it seems to me that they want to focus on the visual with whatever ingredients provides then the colors they need, regardless of taste. I found that the combination of flavors just didn't work for me. Nara special roll - The dollop of chili on top of each sliced roll did nothing for this roll except numb my tongue, perhaps so that I couldn't taste what the roll should taste like. It's suppose to have soft shell crab I did but the crab was so anemic I only saw and tasted tempura batter. Additionally, the raw fish was WARM! Warmer than room temperature, which is highly unusual. In terms of texture and flavor, this roll is one of the worst I ever had for the price. Bento box combination: The two choices I picked were mixed tempura and salmon teriyaki. Mixed tempura - Perfectly fried outer batter, came with two halves shrimp pieces and 4 other vegetable pieces. Salmon teriyaki - Fishy and not fresh. I couldn't take more than one bite of this. Very disappointing! Teriyaki glaze was light, not flavorful. Side salad - Fresh salad lettuces BUT the ginger dressing they opted to use tastes terrible. I would recommend they use a miso or sesame based salad dressing instead. It's more widely appealing than ginger. With this type of poor first impression I would vow to never return but with their excuse of a soft opening I may try them again sometime in the future. Hence the 2 stars vs 1. read more

Swung by for lunch after seeing a few good reviews and saw that it was new and it didn't disappoint for a solid neighborhood sushi joint. First, the service was swift and very friendly. The place was clean and not crowded. It was well laid out with several seating options including outdoor with umbrellas. I decided to sit at the bar and was immediately given water and ginger+wasabi. The menu has a good amount of variety and as someone dabbling in the keto diet, I especially appreciated that they had a section of the menu with no-rice rolls and let me tell you, the Zen-Zen was delish! I loved the food and service here. My only regret is not taking any pictures of the food we ordered (we were so hungry). I came for lunch and started with veggie tempura as an appetizer. The tempura was crunchy and veggies were cooked well. I then ordered a lunch set with a California roll and teriyaki chicken as my two mains. Each set comes with rice, salad, and miso soup. The teriyaki chicken was delicious. The California roll mostly had imitation crab and didn't include avocado. The ratio of ingredients to rice was different, as well (less rice than ingredients, but I didn't mind this). Overall, the California roll wasn't the best I've tried, but it was still good. I tried the sesame chicken, which was crispy with a sweet and salty glaze. I will absolutely order that the next time I'm in the area! We also ordered tempura ice cream, which was more than enough for our party of three. We were also given watermelon slices before we ordered dessert. The waitresses were very friendly and made sure we had everything we needed the entire time. When we asked for things, they gave it to us extremely quickly. I liked how clean and inviting the place looked. The lights behind the bar gave the restaurant a fun vibe. Lanterns hanging above every booth gave the place a warm glow. Major plus - the women's bathroom is very clean and has a small vanity and stool where you can keep your purse, if needed. The price (about $110) was pretty good considering the amount of food we ordered: three lunch sets, two appetizers, a sushi roll, and dessert. We left full and satisfied. I will definitely be back! Went to Nara Sushi during their soft opening! The food was delicious but since they were only open for 3 weeks at that point the wait staff wasn't very knowledgeable about the food or beer. This is the cutest most wonderful new sushi place! I ordered takeout, and loved the creativity and almost artistic creations of the sushi. I'm not a huge rice person, and the roll I ordered had almost no rice. They give so much allowance for the flavors of the fish and especially the real crab that was in my roll. It wasn't overwhelmed by deep fried batter. I especially loved that the two chefs behind the counter were two gentlemen that looked very passionate about what they did. This is a nice small family restaurant. We went there once last month and were very pleased with service and food was excellent. They even brought a desert to us even thought we did not order it! We split a large Kirin while waiting for our rolls, the Amigo and the Albacore Delight. I like the diversity of rolls and artistic twist from the typical rolls found at most sushi places. The rolls looked beautiful, and were fresh and hardy. The wasabi was good and the ginger was very good. I would like to come back to try different rolls. We love to try different sushi places and this place certainly knows how to roll a good sushi. We tried their Salmon roll, cucumber avocado roll, miso soup, salad, saki and their stir fry beef noodles. The ambience was comfortable with great seating and it was very clean. I have been looking for a sushi spot in Folsom for a while that earns my regular patronage. The Sushi Chefs, each of the 3 times that I have gone, were spectacular. Very kind and generous. They obviously both know and love what they are doing. Every nigiri I've had has been top notch. Their kitchen has also been excellent. On day 1 I had the grilled Saba (Mackerel) and some amazing nigiri. The following meal was a donkatsu curry bowl which was prepared very well with a nice mild curry paired with a simple roll. Both times had excellent service and I knew I had found my new spot. The third occasion, I needed to finally bring my girlfriend with me when she was able to visit. We shared a Hamachi Kama which was delightfully prepared, we each had our own sushi roll (salmon scallop and Popcorn lobster) and both were fantastic. The quality of their fish is one thing, but the expert preparation for even the "simple things" like tempura frying the lobster was amazing. Lastly we had some nigiri we shared between us since we love closing out our meals with Unagi. At least we thought our meal had concluded, but one of the sushi chefs kindly approached our booth and generously served us some chilled orange slices that had some tasteful knife work around the peel. The attention to detail from decor, service, freshness and preparation have all been stellar. I admit that I was initially a bit judgemental upon seeing the sign open up since they included they also do teriyaki and noodles other than sushi. I thought they would spread themselves thin due to wide variety of offerings. They also do not have a break in their lunch/dinner hours so I was apprehensive about their freshness for dinner. But as I have stated above, each of the 3 times I have gone, not once was I ever disappointed. I very much look forward to my semi regular patronage with Nara which is both near where I live and work. Here's to hoping i can restrain myself from being toooooo frequent. There maybe another spot in town that offers more bang for the buck during lunch Mon-Fri, but the overall quality of food is superior at Nara no matter the hour you dine. read more
