Every single bagel shop in Richmond puts enough cream cheese on it to feed a starving 3rd world country. Not to mention every place in Richmond is bent on calling cream cheese "schmear" because I guess no one has actually been to NY to know that that is not how that word it used. The bagels are fine, as good as you can get in Virginia but I get viscerally mad when I have to SCOOP the cream cheese off of my bagel for it to be edible. There is no "lite" option on online ordering (also can't toast your bagel, also can't add ketchup if you add SP and hot sauce)Maybe the in store ordering experience is better but their online options are limited. I want to say these bagels are not bad. They are good. The entire bagel experience is not enjoyable for anyone that knows anything. But that's every place in Richmond it's this same stuff. I went to Nate's bagels after driving by multiple times and seeing long lines so I expected great bagels. My experience was just ok. I like a toasted bagel and was told they don't do that. Instead I asked for my everything bagel with veggie cream cheese to go and had to toast it when I got home. The bagel was delicious but I thought it was annoying to have to toast it from home. I used to live in NY and bagel shops that were twice as busy as Nate's had no issue doing all the prep for the sandwiches/bagels people asked for. Their anti-toasting approach is nonsense. Untoasted bagels are just boring to me. There's no way around it. I'm an old person, Jewish family from New York, eaten at a hundred bagel joints across the U.S. and in Europe. Only a small handful of places refuse to toast your bagel, and those places are the worst. Please don't tell me you can't toast a bagel because your restaurant is too busy. I have been wanting to try this place for a while and glad I finally did. The original Vinny was delicious (I subbed chive cream cheese). The sausage and egg slipped out easily with each bite so it's definitely messy but that doesn't detract from the tastiness! The inside is super cute. Delicious bagel but service and cleanliness lacking. The bagel looked bready but did not taste that way at all. Flavorful and delicious. I was the only one waiting to order and the woman behind the counter made me wait when while she was hanging out, and when she took my order there was no smile, no positive voice inflextion, no action suggesting she wanted wanted to be there. She was wearing a glove for cleanliness, touched my cash for payment, then put two fingers against the inside of the empty coffee cup she handed me to fill my coffee. I was in Richmond for 1 day and had Nate's recommended to me twice. I figured I would give it a shot because of the recommendations. Ordered ahead on a Sunday morning and received the order a little before 9, they were already fairly busy and only getting more so while I was there. I ordered the Ole Virginy on an everything bagel. I have to say that it is my new favorite bagel sandwich I have ever had. Good size, perfect texture, and the combination of toppings on the sandwich was awesome. I have FINALLY gotten in here... always thwarted by a long line or a locked door. And it's as good as the hype. I got the breakfast bahni mi and it was exactly what you'd expect. Perfect bagels, warm with a slightly crispy exterior. They do a healthy business with online pre-orders, with bags and bags of orders waiting on the counter to be picked up. Before anyone says anything I contacted the company with two different modalities before writing this because I wanted to give them a chance to rectify it before I spoke about it. Nobody answered, I get the impression they don't care at this point since they have their 10k insta followers. Ive been to Nate's a LOT but I stopped last March when the pandemic hit. Yesterday was my first time in a little over a year and I wanted to treat myself. I got a rosemary sea salt bagel with two eggs (I added one), cheese, bacon, and avocado. That sucker ran me $11. That's fine though, I craved a bagel. I should say that WOULD have been fine if the bagel weren't chewy and stale, the eggs were fried to absolute death, the cheese were actually melted, and there was more than maybe a half a teaspoon of avocado in it. It was a huge disappointment. My jaw actually hurt by the time I finished it. The quality of their bagels has honestly gone so far downhill that I don't understand how people are still going when there are so many other options now. I never tell businesses I have a food blog so I get an authentic experience and damn, that one was rough. Reading other reviews and messages I got from others on my page, it seems this experience is actually quite common. It would be awesome if someone could hold them accountable. I looked at my old pictures of their bagels from a year ago and wow, the eggs were fluffy, bagels were fresh, cheese was melted. $11 is still nuts, especially since we're not in NYC, but honestly yesterday felt like I was robbed. Came into Nate's on a Saturday. Supeeeer long line, but don't be too intimidated because it goes by quick! I picked up two bagel sandwiches. One was the Ol Virginny, which is like your super classic egg sandwich type of bagel. The tomato jam gave us sweetness, cream cheese gave us creaminess- it was the perfect sandwich! Got it on a rosemary bagel which also added some great herbal flavor. The second bagel i got was the bagel banh mi. It pretty much tastes what you would expect if you've ever had a banh mi- juicy pork, pickled veggies and some aioli. The bagel itself is delicious as well-The texture was great- right amount of chewiness and crunchiness I think I'd prefer the Ol Virginny a little more because it's got ingredients that I prefer on a bagel!
