Went here for the first time after four years living in the city and I would like to say I was mildly impressed. I have had heard great things about this place but I have never been a big fan of bagels, especially for breakfast. I went in and was immediately surprised by how organized they were with their morning set up and how many people were already in there. They have a wide selection of bagel sandwiches to offer with meats that I was surprised they provided you with their bagels. I decided to bite the bullet and try the breakfast banh mi bagel and I also tried the classic breakfast sandwich with avocado on the side. The service was fast and the bagels came out nice and warm. The classic breakfast sandwich did not really impress me at all because the bagel was slightly hard and it tasted much more like a McDonald's sausage McMuffin than anything else. Now the banh mi bagel surprised me because it was actually really delicious. They filled both bagels to the brim but there was something about the pickled carrots and cilantro mixed with the most tender pork belly that really hit my taste buds with that sesame bagel. On multiple occasions I have driven into the city and stood in the long line just to have a rosemary sea salt bagel with cream cheese... yumm. I ordered well in advance and the three dozen bagels were hot out of the oven when I arrived. I would recommend being patient when you are there during busy hours. While I asked for "light feta" I found that they omitted it completely, but the sandwich still had the warm, savory goodness you need on a rainy morning. The bagel itself was a bit tough, I have my suspicions it was leftover from the day before. My fiancé got the sea salt rosemary bagel which had that classic chew. Of course I couldn't resist a bite of his giant black and white cookie at the end, which was sweet, cakey, and pretty on par with what you'd get at a deli. There's no seating- you order online, come to the store front, wait outside for someone to take your order number, and then wait for them to bring out your order. The whitefish salad here is quite delicious; it has me coming back on a weekly basis. HOWEVER, the quality of the bagel itself is not so great. It's a little tough to chew with no distinguishing texture between the exterior and interior. Word on the street has been crazy positive since Nate's opened their doors. I'd agree that Richmond needed a quality bagel shop, and Nate's definitely met that niche. I visited a couple weeks ago with a friend. We arrived around prime bagel-consumption time and the line was stretched all the way to the bathrooms. I'm glad it was an indoor line or I probably wouldn't have waited (generally a pansy in cold weather). Be prepare to wait; it's worth it. I ordered an everything bagel (not toasted) with cheddar, one egg, and pork roll. I was so hyped to see pork roll on a menu here (too rare) and that was my main source of excitement. I also purchased orange juice, coffee, and a black and white cookie...all of which were delicious, especially the orange juice. My friend and I located bar seats after ordering and it didn't take long for our numbers to be called out. The bagel itself was tasty and fresh, the egg was perfectly cooked, and the cheese was what you'd expect. But the pork roll? Oddly tasteless. I'm not docking my review because of it, but I wouldn't recommend that breakfast meat at this location. I'm pretty sure that's the first time in my life I couldn't taste pork roll in a dish. I'm still confused about it. Lesson learned: Order bacon next time. I assume there will be a next time. It's a great little bagel shop. read more

I love coming to Nate's! The bagel sandwiches are good and offer a great variety and price point. It's not the best sandwich you'll eat in your life, but it's a really solid option that is both reliable and well-priced. I also got a cold brew coffee and was pleasantly surprised by all of the syrups and milk options I was able to add. They just give you the cup and you fill up your coffee and customize it yourself, which is great. Sandwiches are also always ready super fast and the online ordering system is seamless. My favorite would be my sandwich (Ol' Virginny) because the flavor was just my kind of tea - this obtains "Sausage Craft patty, fried egg, local tomato jam, caramelized onions, cream cheese". The Jersey Turnpike has "Pork roll, fried egg, American cheese, SPK (salt, pepper, ketchup)". All was fantastic! I think the completely virtual ordering system is really working well here! I arrived before my pickup time (wasn't sure about parking) and my order was ready shortly after. They were polite and organized with getting things out to customers. The bagels here are among the best I've tried outside NY and the cashew cashmeer was really tasty. I first had Nate's Bagels at an event, and loved it so much I had to make a trip to the bakery. Inside the shop is like a time warp, you'd think the store had been up and running for fifty years with the chintzy wallpaper and exposed ceiling. It's a simple set up: a few tables and chairs, a wood counter with bar stools, and an open kitchen right behind the cash register. I loved being able to watch a baker braiding challah by hand just a few feet away. Definitely took me back to being a teenager, baking bread with my neighbor who used to work in a Jewish bakery in New York. Most importantly: the bagels. They are so dense yet fluffy, and the flavor is perfect. It's like a little cake made of bread. So first time trying the "amazing Nates Bagels". I ordered online and that went very smoothly. Easy to use and very user friendly. Received an ETA for about 10am. Got to the shop and waited outside until a guy came around and took your order number. The corner was packed! As it should be on a Saturday morning during peak time.
