I'd never actually eaten at this, the famous Nathan's Famous by the boardwalk. Mostly because it's perpetually packed in the summer, and I've still managed to eat dozens of Nathan's hot dogs over the years. I never felt the need. But we were nearby, and it was not just the only eatery open on a cold, rainy non-summer Sunday in Coney Island, but it was empty. So we went for it...and were pleasantly shocked at the quality of the food. Not only were these hot dogs the best Nathan's hot dogs I've ever had (I got chili on one, which I inhaled in 5 seconds flat), but the chicken fingers were startlingly crisp and tasty. We've unfortunately locked ourselves into a Nathan's visit every time we take my daughter to the Aquarium now, which also promises to be far more often than I signed up for. This is the main Coney Island location. There's a outpost on the Boardwalk. I'm like a Dog I can find my way home but don't ask me the address! I'm pretty sure this huge location is Surf Avenue. Did the 5 borough tour and Coney Island was the last stop. I was excited as Nathan's is the landmark here. This one is located on the corner. Line was short. Lucky me! Food: Cheese fries: not cooked good. Just ok. I never had their fries before. Foot long: just ok. Very thin and too much roll I had to tear half of it off to get to the hot dog. Fried clams: just ok. The Coney Island staple! You can't come to Coney Island and now have some Nathan's! I've been here many many times over the years, but I visited for the first time post-COVID-19. It was still crowded, but not nearly as crowded as it normally would be in the summer, if the park was open. My friend and I came for a Saturday afternoon beach day at Coney Island. I've only ever had Nathan's in Manhattan from their little carts so it was pretty impressive to see the outdoor restaurant with all of the available choices. The restaurant already has outdoor seating which they had closed off certain tables to allow for easier social distancing for their customers. There was a nice plastic barrier between the cashiers and patrons. I also liked how all of the doors of the establishment were open so it was basically like being outdoors and really let the area to air out. My friend and I got the chili cheese dog, a corn dog and the onion rings. The chili cheese dog was delicious - lots of flavor and worked well with the sauerkraut and onions even though the sauerkraut itself didn't really add much unfortunately. The corn dog was surprisingly good. Absolutely delicious batter - a perfect balance of salty and sweet. Just sad to see how small it was for the price. Finally, the onion ring was disappointing. It took nine years for this Bay Area California girl to make it to Coney Island after being an NYC resident for more than half that time, meeting my now-husband, and being in a global pandemic. I know for the locals, it's not a big deal and possibly not even a desirable location, but growing up and living across the country in California, it is a landmark spot you must experience at least once. Even more so, visiting the original Nathan's Famous. Honestly, this original location puts all others to shame from the menu to the establishment itself. If you enjoy Nathan's and haven't made it here yet, you've got to check this spot out! My husband and I came by on a Thursday late afternoon/early evening while the amusement park part of Coney Island was not operating (the boardwalk was open for people to walk on though). Anticipating Nathan's might look similar to the sparsity on the outside on the boardwalk and street, my husband and I were shocked to see the inside packed with (social-distanced) lines snaking around the inside and leading up to the registers. The space inside is large and at the time they had most (if not all) registers open with several people working behind the counter to prepare and pack food. Although the lines looked long, staff were able to manage the rush efficiently. Additionally, I was excited to see a mix of both locals and tourists lining up to enjoy their Nathan's. The menu boasts several more options than what is offered in their typical kiosk or freestanding locations including burgers and sandwiches, chickens, seafood (including clams and oysters), and various beers. As mentioned, we came in on a Thursday and we were able to capitalize on their current special of "Throwback Thursday's" where one can get a 5¢ hotdog with the purchase of ANY regular priced item during the hours of 5 PM - Close. We got a total of three 5¢ hot dogs with a purchase of a regular fries, bacon cheese fries, and a large drink to share. Super great deal and a hot dog is truly a must buy for a first timer at this original, iconic Nathan's. We were pleased all-around with our meal and the ambiance of the establishment itself. As things start to open up again and the weather starts to get better, take that trip to Coney Island and enjoy some Nathan's Famous (heck...come on Thursday evening while they're running g the promo!). I was pretty disappointed by my first Nathan's experience. I paid $20 for two plain hotdogs with grilled onions, fries, and a drink. This visit I took lots of photos and will remember it. I had a Chili Cheese Dog, my wife had the Bacon Cheese Dog and we split a half order of Onion Rings. I had a small Coney Island Mermaid beer and my wife had a lemonade. I really love these inexpensive but good restaurants, especially when they have been around since 1916! I love the old style signage and storefront awnings and it's great location right on the corner at the entrance to the rides. Our food was good and I especially loved the first bite snap of the hot dog and the onion rings which were fried perfectly. The food is great comfort style food and not too expensive. I would love to be here on Independence Day when they have their annual hot dog eating contest. Probably quite a crowd here then. The "flagship" store at Coney Island. The inside looks like every other Nathan's, except it's twice as large. One side is dedicated to serving the usual fare you find at all the regular Nathan's franchises: hot dogs and fries. The line was practically empty. On the other side, you have seafood??? This is an iconic historical site that should be visited if you are visiting Brooklyn. Try and visit during the 4th of July hot dog eating contest. Took a walk over to Nathan's after meeting up with my wife in Coney Island. There are now three ordering zones with many registers in each zone. The zone furthest east has the full menu. The zone in the middle has a limited menu with hotdogs, sides, and drinks. There are self ordered tablets on the west side of the restaurant near the outdoor seating where you can only order hot dogs. They've got efficiency figured out. They have some new items. Some old items. We decided to get some hot dogs. Only saw the six inch option, so we got two. Also got an order of cheese fries. OK, yeah you can find Nathan's in numerous places these days and the prices can be absurd for an original hot dog ($4.75) with nothing on it. In addition, honestly, the frozen ones you can buy at a market are just as good for a fraction of the price, but if you're into the experience of visiting the original location, then by all means go for it and make a day out of it at the boardwalk too. However, besides just hot dogs, Nathan's has a very wide menu of other items, like burgers, sandwiches, tenders, chicken wings, but who are you kidding? You're here for a dang hot dog .. and probably some of their famous crinkle cut fries! And if you don't want a plain hot dog, they have a collection of numerous Heinz condiments right outside, including your everyday ketchup, mustard, radish and mayo. In addition, they also sell cheese dogs, chili cheese dogs and corn dogs on a stick, if you're into any of them. And the same goes for your crinkle cut fries that can be topped with cheese, chili cheese or even bacon cheese. As for seating, there are outdoor tables shaded by umbrellas to the side of the institution. For first-timers, just be prepared for the waits, especially in the summer. It oozes with history from the unique menu (weird seafood options at a Hot Dog place?!) to the vintage neon to the people watching of all the unique "characters" in the area.
