Recently let my pool service go to try it myself. Took a water sample in to Nathan's Pool Supply and was warmly greeted by Robbie. He tested my water and said everything looked good. Answered a ton of my questions. Basically gave me a thumb nail review of pool care. I had a slight algae film on my pool walls that my pool service couldn't get rid of and Robbie recommended a product to put in my slimmer basket. Told me it would clear it up in a couple of days...boom, problem solved. My pool is crystal clear. I mentioned that my booster pump was squealing (probably a ball bearing issue) and that I would need to replace it in the near future. He told me Leslie's Pool Supply (his competitor) was currently having a blow out sale online right now. I went home and immediately ordered one. Obviously he cared more about me than making another sale of a booster pump. Highly recommend this place. Ignore the old, negative reviews since these are new owners. read more

New management!! I decided to try Nathan's again. Very Friendly and a case of Chlorine was well under $40 + deposit (I had a crate and 4 bottles). And the guy I interacted with loaded the new case into my SUV. Nathan's has also had what I consider hard to find parts. Combine that with the new customer service this in my new place. Been going here for years, as the owner was honest and knowledgeable! I needed a new filter and it was 10 days to get off the internet for a $120. So knowing it would be more expensive at Nathan's, I needed it now,so I was willing to pay the usual $145, but was Surprised by what I assuming is the owners son that it was $188! He told me they were made in China and it was due to tariffs! On a whim I googled Unicel and they're made in California! Wtf?! So you are ruining your reputation for money and lies! Well good news, the place is under new ownership and the new owner and staff are amazing. Super helpful, friendly and also know their stuff! My pool cleaner was not working. I brought it in and they diagnosed and fixed the problem in 1 day!. They also used a number of parts that I needed that they had on hand and did not charge me for them. Had a pool guy decide maintenance was best deferred. After two years, chlorinator was leaking, pump was leaking and he balked it on old equipment. Bye bye pool guy, talk with Rob and the guys at Nathan's and they walk me thru the process to repair my leaks. Great place, don't let the old reviews about bad customer service deter you. This was previously caused by a family member who is no longer there. I only go there now to buy liquid chlorine as Leslie's doesn't sell it buy the case & the price is cheaper. George is the only guy who can test your water which is weird. He's knowledgeable, but isn't customer friendly as are all of the other knuckleheads working there. I was forewarned that the place is rude. Dude with the beard is not a friendly guy. First time I've been there. Asked for test strips and chlorine for the hot tub. Asked for the strips, dude gave me a pack, I asked if that was the only brand and dude copped a huge attitude. It's whatever. I was told he's a dick but always has inventory so I went for it. George is straight forward but the man has lots of years of experience and will ONLY sell you what you need and tell you how to mix it and take care of your pool, if you want to ask questions he will answer them but he's not the joking kind, I'm a business owner and everyone has different personalities, I like George and respect him and I get the same back. I've been having trouble finding the right seal kit for my pump. The older guy there knew exactly what I needed and even installed in right there at the counter. He lot a lot of sage advice. Most places would have just tried to sell me a new pump. read more

I will never give this business any of my money ever again! Went in to purchase 2 screws for my pool sweep. When showing a picture of a similar pool sweep I was cut off by the employee Mac telling me what model it was. I then proceeded explaining that I needed the 2 screws under the blue housing as mine came off and i couldnt find them. He then walks back to the back I assumed to get the screws I needed but came out with a large container filled with miscellaneous screws. Then grabs the inside panel of the sweep and asks if this is what mine looks like. Hesitant to agree as I'm not 100% what the inside looked like with out all the other pieces together I turn the panel and recognize the spot where my missing screws go. He tried one then dug around for some others. I then say the screws may be short as I'm trying to recount size/length of screws missing. I pull a small one out and say "they may be this size" then retract what I said because there is a rectangular piece of plastic the screws go into before going into the main body. Mac then says rudely "can you let me do my job". I then tell him to forget it I will order the screws I need online as I will not be talked to like that especially in front of my daughter. No customer should EVER be treated with such attitude! read more

Odd experience. The owner isn't friendly; they are unprofessional, condescending and act like it's a chore to help you make a purchase. They don't directly answer questions, they circle around the answer. The wife was much more helpful than the owner. They act like you're an idiot if you are not a pool expert and ask any questions. Wasted two trips there because they gave the wrong info about testing the water in my pool. This guy just needs to retire. You can tell he's miserable. read more

Bad experience here. Google says they are open at 9am. I arrived at 9:30 and walk in the front door and the employee tells me that they don't open until 10 but he let me purchase anyway. They sold me a pool rX for $110. Way over priced. Then when I was leaving the employee reminded me they open at 10am and I said ok I'll remember that for next time but told him google has the times wrong and he said in a very rude and snarky tone "don't believe everything you read on the internet" -overpriced -dirty -unprofessional -unfriendly As the owner of a business you can change the open/close times on google. You could also lock the front door if you're not open. read more

Golly, a lot of bad reviews. Luckily my experience was a good one. I went in hoping to find expertise not cheerfulness and that's what I got. I had drained my pool and didn't want to risk the re-chemicalizing on the advice of the young guys at a closer pool store. Ageist perhaps. Anyhow, George provided a worksheet, reviewed each step with me, and was most helpful. He didn't bat an eyelash at my perhaps inane questions. Just answered them. His prices on the chemicals seemed inline with other pool stores, but the 50 pounds of cyanuric acid was just $43, much cheaper than what I found online at Leslies. I brought my MX-8 in for repair, and left it determine what was needed. They told me there would be a $20 diagnostic fee. When I returned they said it was ready and the repair was $325! I was shocked and asked why I wasn't called to authorize the repair. I was given no explanation, only stated that if I didn't want it, he could probably sell it for at least that much. Feeling I had no choice, I paid, only to return 37 days later as the unit still di not perform. (note:warranty is 30 days) I returned the unit again expecting satisfaction. The technician told me that the DIY attempts included incorrect parts which he completely replaced with the correct parts. I acknowledged, and paid the additional $107.00. When I came back a few days later, the owner (he made sure I knew it as he said "see the name on this badge, and the name on the sign". "I want you to leave" I never raise my voice, and never asked for anything other than to have the repair I had reluctantly paid for. I had been a customer for at least 10 years even before they closed their location on Fulton Ave. I never expected to be treated like this. RB read more

Nathan's used to be my favorite place for pool supplies, way better and more knowledgeable then Leslie's. That was until today. I went in and found that they have doubled the price of chlorine The 1st day of Labor Day weekend. Thay say that their prices went up so they have to pass that on to everybody else. I don't believe it. I have family in the chemical industry and after asking around there has been no significant raise in chlorine prices. Many of the posts here reference the staffs manner. They do tend toward the brusque. Sometimes when I'm not sure what I need to solve a problem part of what I want from the help is for them to answer all my questions so I can reach a better understanding of the issues and possible solutions. While that sort of service is not one of their strong points at Nathans, they have over the years helped me learn how to operate my pool. Their advice lines up with my goal of effective pool maintenance at the lowest cost. I prefer them to my other neighborhood option, Leslies, where I sometimes know more about my pool chemistry than the frequently changing staff. It seems the goal at Leslies is to send me out the door with an armful of products. I've never felt that way at Nathan's. The folks at Mahalo Pool in Orangevale are pleasant and helpful but they are a little far from my home in Citrus Heights. I bought my pool sweep there and he actually came to my home (for free) to help me get it working right. My honest rating of Nathans would be four stars but I went five to offset all the one star reviews. Everybody with a beef wants to complain but the happy people just go on their way. read more

This is the last time I will go in that store and be treated like garbage. I have gone in only a few times without getting attitude or talked down to and I am not going to take it anymore. Do not go here if you need help. Last week I went in to see what to do about my cloudy water I told them what I had been doing and even said that I had been testing the chlorine in the morning like they had said the week before to see how long it was lasting and he said we wouldn't tell you that. I shrugged it off that time as dementia. I had put too much chlorine in to try to shock it so they couldn't test my water that day. They told me to come back when the chlorine wasn't so high to test again and today when I went in the guy said can you come back tomorrow I don't feel like doing that today. I was shocked, I would have bought what ever they suggested but now never going back they have the worst customer service I have ever experienced. We used to buy pool supplies at Leslies where they have, on multiple occasions, treated us like idiots. They sell us clearly wrong filter supplies without checking to make sure its correct and usually dont know what they are talking about. They hire young guys that try to sell you products with a smile and a wink instead of knowledge. Anyway, Nathans actually has knowledgeable guys working in there. Some may be gruff and come off as rude, but who cares? They have a huge selection of supplies and can actually give you knowledgeable advice instead of just feeding you a bunch of BS. read more

Okay, walking into Nathan's is a little like walking into an old auto shop. There isn't a whole lot of bright, flashy packaging everywhere, just a bunch of menacing looking pool equipment and parts hanging from the walks. The people who work here aren't sparkly young salespeople who will try to sell you whatever product is hot this week, no, these are crusty pool professionals who will sell you what you need and dispense advice when needed and asked for. I've seen a few complaints that George (the manager) is rude and, yes, he is not a man of many pleasantries, and sometimes he can make you feel like a complete "pool rookie" but, hey, the man knows his pool water. One time he stopped me from buying something that I totally didn't need. "Put that down, idiot, stop dumping shit you don't need into your pool." **That's not what he said, but that's what it felt like** Look, I'm a first time pool owner and it's been a learning curve. Like many other first time pool owners, I was more than happy to dump chemicals into my pool, helter skelter, at the first sign of any trouble. Cloudy? Hand me that totally expensive clarifier!! These guys know their pools and pool stuff. For certain. I'd driven by them for years, and was using Leslie's instead. First time to Nathan's they gave me EXACTLY what I needed and very quickly too. True, their prices weren't as low as Leslie's, but I'll pay a little more to get fast, accurate service. Manager George is a little gruff, but it was clear to me he is true and honest. I needed some half-unions and a manifold for a Jandy filter, and he had them at the counter in less than a minute. I asked for some advice on cartridge cleaner solution, and he hooked me up with some spray on degreaser/descaler that worked great. Terrible customer service! If you can buy your equipment somewhere else a do it! My first encounter with this company was when I called to see if they had a part. This guy named Mac answered, and was instantly rude. He was not at all interested in finding out the part number I was searching for, but instead simply told me to stop talking and hang on. He came back to the phone saying he had the part (how is that even possible when I hadn't given the part number? Yes, you had a t-bolt, but how was I to know it was the right one?), and to come in. When I went in, he was again rude and I began to think that was his schtick. He brought me the bolt and nut, and I tried them to make sure it fit. The nut only went on less than a quarter inch, so it appeared to be the wrong size/thread type. I told him it was the wrong nut, and he responded, like I was an idiot, saying it was a lock nut, and I just had to put it on with a wrench, then it would come off easy (which made no sense!). I took it home to put it on, and within a few seconds realized it was the wrong size/thread!! In trying to take it off, I ended up breaking it, so it was CLEARLY the wrong size! If your schtick is gonna be that you're rude to customers, then you'd better know your stuff. I will not ever return. read more
