I finally found my salon to cut my natural hair. Love my stylists Paulette, she was very, very knowledgeable. I didn't care for the products that was used to style me. i came here about 5 months ago as a newbie to houston seeking a great natural hair salon. this was NOT the business. the stylist recommended I do some sort of roller set. when she tried to put the roller in my hair she didn't know how. SHE RECOMMENDED IT! and instead of asking someone for help or changing the technique she just kept trying and trying...after 40 minutes in her chair and less than half my hair in rollers I asked her to take it all out. I was skeptical at first to go to a natural hair salon because I've never had my natural hair done professionally but I was pleasantly surprised! The feel of the salon is very earthy yet simple. I LOVE the decor. My stylist was Paulette and she did a fantastic job on my hair. She cut my hair shorter on the sides and longer on the top which was EXACTLY what I wanted. Visited the salon last week for a hair cut. I wish I had read the reviews before going, because the previous reviews are accurate. I asked the stylist to taper the back & sides of my hair, and even showed her 3 pictures so that we were on the same page with what I had in mind. Thirty minutes later, I walked out of the salon with a high top FADE! I'd been growing my natural hair out for a year, and within 20 minutes, 4 inches of hair from the back and sides were on the floor, and my hair looked as though clippers had been used. During the cutting process, I kept reminding the stylist, Hannajah, that I did not want it cut too short, and even requested that she turn me towards the mirror. She replied she needed the mirror to cut, and to not worry, she understood what I was looking for. After expressing my disappointment, the stylist ( and I'm being generous with that title) said, "Well, you said tapered!" After reminding her of the pictures I'd shown her, she recommended I take Biotin to grow my hair back. While trying to style the lop sided hair cut she'd given me, she asked, "What do you want me to do with the back & sides"? Yes, she really said that..... I called back the next morning to request an appointment with the owner, so that she could fix the inconsistencies of the poor hair cut I'd received, and was informed she was not taking any new clients, and she would be away from the salon for 2 MONTHS!! The receptionist told me I could email the owner, and she would get back to me with some styling options. I have several black tie events coming up, and cannot believe I have to now search for someone to fix this mess. I've never experienced such poor customer service from a salon, but I suppose I'm used to much higher end establishments. Very disappointing visit, and would not recommend this salon to anyone looking for a hair cut. read more

This review comes nearly 8 hours after my scheduled appointment. It may read angrily at times, but I've written this with calm and purposeful intent. I just want to describe what happened in detail for anyone considering NRS for the first time, and for the salon itself to consider revising their policies to avoid mishaps like these from happening in the future. There's so much that goes into my rating, so I'll be as thorough as possible: - I'll start by saying I was very much looking forward to my visit to NRS. I have natural wavy/curly hair and haven't been able to find a stylist in my area who works with natural hair. NRS's website is what caught my attention, especially their policy on arriving early. Don't bother reading this because it's false. I'll get to why in a moment. - Their policy also states that new customers must pay for and schedule a consultation prior to scheduling your first hair appointment. Not a problem at all, given that the $20 for the consultation goes toward your fee on your actual hair styling visit. So, I scheduled my consultation a week in advance. I also received an email and a phone call the day before to confirm my appointment time. Again, I was very impressed with how thorough they were with their appointments. Unfortunately, my being impressed didn't last long. - And here's where everything goes downhill fast. I live 1h45m from NRS, so I leave at 9am for my 11am consultation. I arrive 15 minutes early as their policy suggests. At 11:05, my stylist comes out to the sitting area and explains she's "running a little behind" and that she'll get to me in just a moment. At 11:20 I still haven't been assisted, so I speak with one of the two receptionist to ask how long the consultations usually take. She explains they can take anywhere from 5-30m. I've been at NRS now for 35m (including the 15m early arrival), so my consultation would have probably been over by now. I should have left then, but I took the time to wait a little longer. - At 11:35, I talk with the receptionist again and explain I'm cancelling the consultation. She asked if I'd like to reschedule, and so I am patient while I explain that it took me 1h45m to get to the salon. Even so, I still managed to get there 15m before my scheduled appointment. Waiting 35m for a consultation that probably wouldn't have lasted that long is unacceptable. So no, I didn't want to reschedule. I even asked if the stylist was close to finishing with who she was working with. But no, she still hadn't finished and wouldn't finish for some time. - If that wasn't enough, the second receptionist explained that NRS has two consultation options. One of course was to make an appointment while the other (which no one told me about and isn't described on their website) permits people to essentially take a profile photo, email it, and simply explain what they'd like done. They then apparently gauge how long it would take for what you asked and then schedule you for your first full appointment. She proceeds to tell me, "Since you knew what you wanted, you really didn't even need to schedule a consultation. You could have chosen that other option." She didn't say it maliciously, but she probably didn't consider that what she said didn't help the situation; it made it exponentially worse. Even so, I appreciate the receptionists for trying to appease the situation. One of them caught a stylist before heading to the back so she could explain some product options for me. Both receptionists also apologized a couple of times for the inconvenience. - The person completely at fault in this situation was the stylist. She should have had the professional courtesy to explain how long it would have taken her to finish the previous appointment, asked if I wanted to wait, and since I would have said "no," apologized for the time spent, offered to reschedule the consultation, and compensated me $20 from my first full appointment if I decided to return. Or, better yet, she should have followed the policies on the NRS website and asked the person she was styling before me to wait until my consultation was over to finish her up since I was on time. - I'll conclude here by emphasizing 'looks can be deceiving'. In my case, I wish that NRS put as much if not more pride in its customer service as it apparently does in its general appearance. Complete and utter waste of my time. read more

Damage done to my hair because the stylist did not know how to handle lengthy Afro hair. For example, not washing the hair in sections, aggressively combing and pulling the hair. This is not how AFRO textured hair should be treated. This will cause EXTENSIVE breakage; this is natural hair 101. Yet, all of this aggression was done to my hair, and I did not appreciate spending that much money to get my hair damaged by an inexperienced stylist. If I do go back, I will be sure to book with someone else who actually cares and knows what they are doing. read more

The receptionist here is horrid!!!! She always acts like she's doing you a favor. It's difficult to set up an appointment because they make you go through many unnecessary steps. I called to schedule a new appointment and I was told that I had to email a picture. The receptionist did not offer an email address so I emailed using what I thought was the address. I did not hear back and upon calling, she told me that I sent it to the wrong address. She proceeded to cut me off when I informed her that she never gave me an address in the first place. My sister and I made appointments for a wash, trim, and 1hr beauty treatment. My initial stylist Paulette was very engaging and entertained my anxiety of cutting my remaining 4 inches of processed hair. After my hair was washed and cut another stylist took over (I apologize for not remembering her name, she was very nice and professional) and started braiding my hair. While she's braiding my hair, we begin chatting about my job, the conservative nature of my office and the difficulty with finding styles appropriate for the atmosphere. She then begins to unbraid my hair and proclaims to have the perfect work style for me. I am facing away from the mirror (which is extremely frustrating to me as a client, because it eliminates the opportunity to observe and critique in the process. I guess I will just have to be 100% surprised then...) I ask her several times to explain the style to me, but she is very vague and trails off as she continues to work on my hair. I didn't want to be rude, but I could "feel" the style was 100% out of the box for me by the parts and knots she was styling in my hair. I kindly asked her to again to explain the style because she asked her colleague to bring her extension hair from their stock room and I am completely blind to what is happening. She says that she's giving me and elegant bun which calms my anxiety immediately because I prefer conservative, classic styles. My original stylist Paulette takes over again at this point to continue the style. She seems to be having trouble and there's a point when they are both working on my hair, whispering. Needless to say, my anxiety has returned. When she finally finishes, she turn me around. there is a tower of very shiny synthetic hair rising 3 inches directly above my forehead...this style continues down the middle of my entire head in a mohawk...which is NOT conservative or classic...at all. Now I am not confrontational AT ALL and I definitely did not want to make them uncomfortable, so I kindly thanked both stylist, paid my tab (I did not tip) and left without incident. As soon as I made it home I removed the very thick chunks of twisted hair and just wrapped my hair in a turban. I give my experience 3 stars because my wash and hair cut went smoothly and the ladies were both very kind. The style was just...wrong. I don't know what gave them the idea that it was the style for me. And had I been given the option to view the style or have a more accurate depiction of the style I could have saved us all an hour. On a positive note, my sister and I observed several clients receive service for dreadlocks and . If you have locks, this is where you want to be. HORRIBLE PLACE!!! I had to cancel because I had the flu although I already had a consultation and gave them $20. When I called super sick telling them I may not make it because I was contagious, they said they would still have to charge me for half of my service on top of the $20 I already gave them. I gave this place another try, but I think I'm on the search for another salon. I didn't have to wait forever like the last time which was great. I had another stylist this time. If I ever did go back I'd ask for a specific person. She was really nice, but I wasn't entirely satisfied with my results. I got two strand twists because I wanted something that would last me a few weeks. I don't see these lasting the three or four weeks like she said. Some of them weren't even twisted all the way to the bottom to begin with. It's like she got tired at the ends or something because a day later most of the rest are unraveling. Also, I think they're too small. I have a lot of hair but it looks pretty thin right now, like RG3 :( My hair looks ok when it's in a bun, but there's no way I'd wear them down. I feel like I could have done a better job myself. They may be a little overpriced but I haven't done any price comparisons. That's just a gut feeling. I have been a customer since 2011 when I started my transition, and Kim is a great stylist! She's very professional and knows her stuff, which is important when you're natural because you don't want someone not educated and current, whether about products, care and styles! The staff is always professional when I deal with them, however, sometimes it can be a little difficult getting someone to answer the phone and it can be a challenge getting appointments with my stylist. I can't always book out as far as 2 months, so that's my only complaint. Other than that, it's a nice quiet atmosphere, which is great! read more

I was very disappointed in the cost of the services and the style they did on my hair.I showed them the pic of the style I want and they stated they could do it, well they lied. I went back to them for them to redo my hair and the style was a disaster by time I arrived home my curls fell. I called them and left a message, but they never returned my calls. I wasted over 8 hrs and my hair did not look like I went to an upscale salon only thing that showed I went to an upscale salon is the deduction in my bank acct. Stevie could of did what they did. I am very unhappy with their services and the cost they charged. They have no idea wth they are doing and I will never go to them again or refer anyone to them for services. I do not recommend natural resources for natural hairstyles. They are way over price for the work they do. It is soooooooo not worth the time or the $$$$$$$$$$$$$!!!!!!!!!!! If they are going to charge outrageous prices at least back it up with your work. I have no problem paying for services rendered if the work done is worth the cost. I will never go back to them again for anything totally waste of time and money. My hair looks so bad I have to pay someone else to do it. After leaving a nearby salon for a consultation where I was made to feel very uncomfortable, I found Natural Resources Salon around the corner by accident and after walking in I knew this was the salon for me. The salon was very clean and upscale and the staff was very professional. Tamika took the time to consult with me and explain the natural process. I've only been going to the salon for about 4 months and my hair is at its healthiest state and growing steadily. My only complaint is appointment scheduling. I guess it's good for the stylist to be so good and in such high demand, but bad for me as a client because I can't get in for regular scheduled appointments. read more

I was looking for a salon that specialized in Natural Hair. Natural Resources Salon was referred to me by a natural hair supply business. When I called to make an appointment I was asked to send a picture to a cell phone number for a consultation. Upon doing so I was asked what services I was requesting. I proceeded to state, wash, deep conditioning, cut and hair color. I was asked to send a picture of the hair color I had selected. I sent the picture. I then received a text message regarding setting an appointment. I told what was available and responded to the day and time. I didn't receive a message confirming my selection, so I called only to find out the person never booked my choice so I had to settle for another time that wasn't as convenient. If you're going to book appointment by txt, that person needs to be book the appointment right then and there. My appointment was scheduled two weeks from the time of my call. When I spoke with the young lady I asked if they had my color available, to which she replied "yes." They took my cc information in the event of a no show. Appointments had to be cancelled 24 hours in advance or you would be charged a fee. I showed up for my appointment early with Shamika. didn't get Shamika didn't get to me until 45 minutes after my scheduled appointment. She then asked me what was I having done and what hair color. I informed her I had txt the picture two weeks ago. She never got it, so I showed her a picture of the color. She looked puzzled as to how to create this color. Long story short, she attempted twice to get the color and failed. Now I'm left with a funky hair color that I'm not happy with for the next 30 days. I was completely dissatisfied with the service. This was the WORSE experience I've ever had. I would and will not recommend this salon to anyone. Not a good first impression! read more

The customer services is horrible! I was a customer for a year. I saw the same stylist each time I went. She was super slow most of the time, but I kept going for services every 3 months. The final straw was that I received Wildflower weave and she put in brown extension with bright Red steaks. That was not what I requested or what I have been receiving previous visits. I am super conservative and would never ask for such a color. I was pissed! The owner Tameka was not there, they promised to call to "rectify" the situation. Bottom line she never called and the only solution the offered was for me to come back and color the hair brown. The stylist knew what she was doing and thought she could "slip" one on me. I truly believe the ran out of hair so did what she had to do to get me completed. My words of advice for the owner 1) learn customer service skills 2) order products in advance and be well stocked 3) listen to your customers 4) learn customer service skills again!!!!!! read more

I have been a Natural Resources Salon client for a little over 1 year. I would give the salon 3 stars, but the only reason for the 2 starts is finance related... I have noticed throughout my time at NRS that there is a problem with how I am charged. I am fine with paying for my service(s), but on many occasions, I have encountered stylists who take their time at the shampoo bowl (they slowly wash/condition my hair, sometimes they will completely stop washing to talk with their co-stylists); and/or they will take their time doing my hair or combing out my hair as they watch tv (at the time, there were televisions in the salon primarily for clients to watch as their service is performed). This is mainly an issue because clients are normally CHARGED BY THE HOUR. At times, I have been charged more, NOT because of the complexity of my style or hair type, but because the stylist is not being efficient with the time... she is (either intentionally or unintentionally) going slower than normal.. slower than a stylist who was not being paid by the hour. When you get to the cashier, they want to blame you (your hair) rather than the efficiency (or lack there of) of the stylist. It is not fair, also considering the fact that they raised their prices recently. My advice - closely monitor what you are being charged for and I recommend that the manager address this with the stylists. It is not good business. Other than that, the salon is great and it consists of various stylists who are good at what they do. read more

I had my hair done in this salon twice. The first time, my hairstylist was Kim and it was great. However, the second time was a TOTALLY DISASTER. I scheduled my appointment with Kim over a month in advance. To my surprise, when I showed up for my second appointment, the front desk informed me that another hairstylist would do my hair. I asked for Kim several times but they didn't listen me at all. So my only option was to do my hair with this new hairstylist. Another problem. The hairstylist came with a shorter hair extension that was originally requested a month ago. She explained that she didn't have enough time to do a longer hair style. Again, they didn't listen to my concerns. I was without an option, I had to do it the way they wanted (If I say no, they would charge me full price). So I did it. Next day, the first thread of my hair extension fell off. And, from that day on, more and more threads were falling off (I was taking care of my hair as directed. I didn't have any problems in my first visit). So I called one month in advance to cancel my next appointment. The receptionist said I had to pay a hefty fee to cancel my appointment. I didn't agree because I was not satisfied at the first place. She said she was going to write a note to remind to charge this hefty fee in my next appointment. I told her there wouldn't be a next time. SUMMARY: Don't go there, they just want your money. read more
