I absolutely HATE restaurants like this place. The only thing saving them from 1 star is that they were at least friendly. Terrible food. Poor service. They were nice, but at those prices, hardly attentive or anticipatory. Insanely high prices. I suspect that 20 or 30 years ago this was considered the "IT" place in this small town. Thankfully, the culinary palate of America has moved on, but sadly, these guys missed the memo. Amazingly, they were busy on a weeknight in the winter time, but I think some old habits die hard, and it was also the only restaurant in town that was open. Dinner for 4 cost $295. That's my opening statement. Our total order: Two glasses of red wine, 2 vodka and soda's, 2 gin and tonics, 2 halibut specials, skirt steak, seared tuna, 1 espresso, 1 coffee, one lava cake, and one other cake i can't remember, nor do i care enough to go to the site to figure out what it is. $295. Not including tip. First impression: place is old. Old on the outside, I saw old people through the window eating. Went to bar across the street for a beer before our friends arrived and we thought about cancelling. Asked the bartender about the place, said he never ate there, but for the entire time his bar has been open (apparently it opened in 2013) the Nautilus Cafe has been busy. We decided to skip our "reservations" about the place, and stick with our plan. The service was fine. The place is cramped. My vodka drink as well as my friends g&t came in a wine glass. That is lazy. Whatever. My tuna was very good. The salad was fine. My wifes halibut was dry. I am not being picky here - it is what it is. Apparently the other person who had the halibut said theres was very good. The person who ate the steak said it was good - their husband tasted it and said it was dry. It looked dry to me. The desserts were pretty good. The lava cake was not very lava-y, however, it tasted good. The other cake was tasty, but not memorable. The homemade whipped cream was awesome. In fact, the best thing about this place was the whipped cream. You should ask for a side of it with each meal. Then we got the bill. We could have gone to a number of high end restaurants on LI for the same price and did not feel short-changed. I have no issue spending money when I go out. In fact, I love to do that. Love paying for excellence. This place fell short of that for me and my guests. Walking out, my friend said, "Next time, lets just bar hop and eat whatever looks good at the bars we stop at". Rarely do i leave a restaurant and the immediate thought it we should have had bar food. Grew up in Oside, still live on LI, yet this was my first trip to the Nautical Mile. Service was good but the seafood here was just awful. Shrimp was overcooked, fishy and hard. No flavor whatsoever on scallops (usually buttery on their own but somehow not at all in this case). The steak and shrimp entree came with extremely doughy battered shrimp (inedible) and underwhelmingly flavored steak. The ambience of this place is that of a really nice restaurant, but the food equivalent was that of diner seafood. For the same reason you wouldn't order lobster at a diner, maybe skip this spot entirely. Gordon Ramsay would have an aneurism. Caveat: Cesar salad and corn chowder were great! read more

A small restaurant, the requires a reservation on weekend nights. A favorite of the locals. We love to take advantage of their lobster night (Monday) or steak night (Wednesday). All the entrees come with a salad or soup. The caesar salad, always delicious. Occasionally they have different soups than the usual's (seafood gumbo) is a favorite. Their seafood dishes are always great. I know personally I always order from their specials as there is always something truly special on there. read more

The food on the other hand had some good and some bad points the clams stuffed clams were very delicious and very full of flavor. The roles were very fresh and you could tell they were not stale or old. The steak on the other hand was overcooked and had very little flavor. The menu had so many excellent choices, it was difficult to select our lunch choice. We decided on a soup of the moment-- butternut squash, and a bacon avocado caesar salad, to start. Each was delicious. Our entrees were battered jumbo shrimp and pistachio crusted Chilean seabass. Great choices and prepared perfectly. The service was outstanding, our server, Matt, was so prompt, kind and helpful. We had desserts, carrot cake and coffee ice cream oreo mud. From start to finish this was a great experience. Let me start this by saying that we did not try the food. Made an open table reservation for my Dad's birthday, which happened to land on Mother's Day. Made the reservation well in advance and I specifically chose an earlier time as to be able to get a choice table, and we also came about 10-15 minutes early for our 12:30 to help our case. There were two other parties in the entire restaurant when we arrived, one seated by the wondow, another not. We were given seats that were not at the window. I requested if we could sit by the window and was told she couldn't accomodate because it's "a timing thing". Anyone understand what that even means? There were plenty of tables the same size as the one we were seated at (4) along the window, so it wasn't like we were going to take up a bigger table than we needed. So I took a walk across the street and was able to get a table at E.B. Elliots on the balcony. When I came back from EB's they had moved my party from the initial seats, to seats by the window. I guess once they saw me cross the street there was no longer a "timing thing". Too little too late. That's not the way to treat customers and we walked across the street and spent our $300+ elsewhere. Also keep in mind this place is not on the water, or canal. The "panoramic view from the dining room" they talk about on their site is across the street from the water, not on it. read more

Just came from this place . First off we were seated in the middle of the dining area . Off the top that's a bad way to start for us . All eyes on us ! Our daughter who is 11 literally said there is nothing on the menu for her to eat so they said for kids they make pasta so she ordered that . The sauce was so watery and pasta it was literally hard! The food we ordered was good but the service really sucked . The waiter didn't even looked like he wanted to serve our table . This place is expensive for no reason . The decor is nice. Small place. The food looked pretty but was basically tasteless. The calamari could've been more crispy but the sauce was good. The salad the meals come with barely tasted like it had a Cesaer dressing. My friend had the salmon, no flavor. My girlfriend had the lobster. She said it was fresh but again no seasoning. The steak I ordered I requested it medium and they gave me medium rare. The cow was still mooing. I asked them to cook it some more, still came out bloody. The chef was nice enough to send the waiter to see if it was cooked enough but at that point I was more or less turned off so I just said it was fine. Group of 4 adults and one child went on a Sunday a little after 5pm for dinner. The dining room was very empty. They said we could only be seated at the one "round table" they had which was reserved and we would have to wait until 8pm. Really??? A 3 hour wait??? They couldn't put 2 empty tables together? There was certainly no shortage. The staff were very nonchalant about accommodating us and clearly could care less about our business, and now we could certainly care less about The Nautilus Cafe. read more

What a scrumptious lobster dinner we had. We're former New Yorkers visiting and totally enjoyed their 2# lobsters: sweet and juicy. Food and service were excellent. Plenty of outdoor seating. We had the lobster, halibut, shellfish cocktail, baked potato, and French fries. All of it was delicious and cooked/broiled to perfection. This is our favorite restaurant on the Nautical Mile. We have been coming here for many years. Their raw oysters are the best I have ever eaten. Lobster, shrimp, scallops, sole, all delicious and prepared to perfection. If you enjoy meat, the steak or chops are prime quality. The owners and staff are very welcoming. Went to Freeport Monday night saw lobster night sign , decided to go in and have lobster dinner. My girlfriend and I went there 8pm , saw the hostess asked for a table for 2 and was told it would be 15minutes,Even though I saw 3 tables free I assumed they were for reservations, I told hostess we wait at bar , she said she would come in bar and get us when table would be ready . we waited 5 minutes for seat and then sat told bartender we were waiting for a table, he didn't ask right away if we wanted any drinks, He seemed busy he had 5 people at bar and a table of 2, so I politely waited for him , I ask for drinks and he made them , while we were waiting we saw many plates with lobster going into dinner room , and many empty lobster shells , returning to kitchen , also notice waiters talking by entry way, not seaming to busy , we continued to wait and saw other patrons entering the restaurant and being seated again assuming they had reservations , time went by ordered another round , STILL WAITING, there were always a table or 2 open, while we were waiting , I own a restaurant myself so thought maybe they don't want to seat the whole restaurant , the hostess was taking to a table a good 10 minutes so waited to ask her why the long wait, when see finally finished her conversation I ask what happened to our table , and reply was "oh I should have written it down " then sat us at 9pm and said "oh the wait wasn't so long" waited 10 minutes for a waiter when he arrived he recited the evenings specials , didn't mention the lobster , so we asked about it and replied " Oh didn't any body tell you we were out of it?" After being patient for over an hour that was it! I threw down my napkin and said "This is in Unacceptable , we are out of here " on our way out the hostess said " thank you how was everything " OMG I said you are going to get a big review tomorrow ! She said "Thank You " I replied are you kidding me ! she sat us 15 minutes ago ! and now your saying how everything! So Angry !!! Was excited to have dinner hear as i only heard good things. I am hoping that this was just a one off experience. The staff was great but there are a few things that need to be mentioned about my recent visit. The outdoor set up was great and our waitress gave us the run down of the specials for the day. I will note that the specials were not accompanied by any advice on the cost and so the bill was a hard nut to swallow when it came. We opted to try the porterhouse for two, she advised us that it was really very good. Upon arriving at the table I took the first bite and was immediately disappointed. To be honest if I were to feed anyone a steak at my own home like this I would be ashamed of myself. It was not seasoned at all, it had no taste to it in the least. without even chewing I told my boyfriend he was going to be extremely disappointed and he most certainly was. We didn't complain and we pushed through the meal but then the check came. We ordered a bottle of sparkling water, one salad, a side of broccoli and split a baked potato, for a grand total of $175 for our dinner which included tip. The leftover steak that I wouldn't bring home to my dogs was $125. This was no special steak, not even a dry aged piece of meat. I could have had a better quality dry aged steak at a steak house for less. Why was this $125? Had the specials been advised with their respective costs up front I would have never ordered it. Not because I am cheap but for that price I would never order a steak like that at a seafood restaurant. I am not looking to hurt the reputation of this place but rather to bring awareness to them so that maybe they can take into consideration some of the points made and to help anyone else to avoid a similar situation. I am not sure that I will ever go back to give it another shot and actually try the seafood which I have no doubt they do better than the steak. The service was excellent. Nearly the service you would expect at a fine dining establishment without the stuffiness. The atmosphere was relaxed and classy. Definitely a place you could dress up and take a date too or hit up for a bite after being out on the boat all day. The food was fantastic. We tried this place after I had been away from NY dining for a long time and it did not disappoint. So if I could give them - negative stars I would. We pulled up and before I could even get my 6 month old child out of the vehicle the valet guy smashed a Mercedes Benz into our BMW. The valet kid seemed to have left the car in drive and got out the vehicle while it was going then he tried to get back into the car and instead of hitting the breaks he stepped on the gas accelerating at about about 15 miles per hour or more; barely missing my husband and I and consequently crash in into out car and the railing. Thank God for that failing otherwise it would have been a tragedy. After everything, the owner Bryan told us he could not accommodate our party of 6 because they were booked for the evening. Are you serious?!?! Don't even bother coming here. Or trusting the valet with your vehicle. Shame on you. Edit: We were informed that this evening was for reservation only however, never were we asked if we had a reservation. We were in the parking lot when the incident happened because we had intentions of dining at this establishment so after the incident we didn't have any intentions of getting a free meal. Maybe that was the reason why they couldn't accommodate us?! We were told a party of 6 was too large for their establishment. Again, shame on you. Is it too hard to merge two tables?! Came here last night with 5 other friends and really liked it a lot! We came on Steak night which was a great deal! I had the salmon with a side of steamed broccoli and a small house salad. everything was delicious. The food did take a little while to come out but when it did, it was delicious. We have not been to the Nautilus since before Hurricane Sandy. We had the pleasure of dining there last night. The place was so cozy. We love our server Diana who was adorable, personable and sweet. I was invited to a evening boat cruise by a friend of mine. Although I have been to Freeport many many times it is not one of my frequencies. Prior to going I was researching to eat prior to the cruise. The Nautilus had high reviews and it did not disappoint. We shared the chopped baked clams and it we certainly enough for two. They were so delicious I wanted to order another order. The horseradish crusted Tuna which was very fresh and perfect. My wife had the cedar plank Salmon with Vermont maple syrup---she loved it. They were very accommodating when we asked for sautéed broccoli which wasn't on the menu. The service was friendly attentive. The waiter even tied us there was an early bird menu that everything we ordered was in there so he would make sure to adjust the price and to discount our bill. Next time I have to go to Freeport --this will be definitely where I come to enjoy another dinner read more

I have eaten at this restaurant on numerous occasions and always been pleased. Getting a table on a weekend evening can be tough, if you do not have a reservation. Parking can also be an issue on the weekends, but I really don't mind walking. The food is always excellent. Monday is Lobster Special Day and I really enjoy this meal. The service is always very good. The prices are not cheap, but well worth it. For seafood, I highly recommend this establishment on the Nautical Mile in freeport. read more
