Good but maybe not for everybody. I'm not sure if I have ever stayed at a Candlewood Suites…read morebefore. Candlewood is a bit of a niche product from IHG (the Holiday Inn folks). As you can see from others pictures the hotel is pet friendly and the rooms have queen size beds and kitchenettes. This is a bit out of my own personal demographic so I'm not sure if this targets the business traveler, temporary housing for someone visiting or transferring with the nearby military base, or someone with pet(s) and frugally prefers to cook their own food on the road. The room seemed recently remodeled with new flooring and fresh paint but the television and DVD player were very old. The tv was on the small side and had a huge bezel and no HDMI port. I feel certain the DVD player was too old to play Blu-ray. I'm adding a couple of photos of things that I think are mostly missing from the gallery. I highlight a cookout area at the end of the hotel (cooking utensils are available at the front desk) and the dog walking area behind the hotel. This and the Best Western next door are the only 2 hotels I could find on Whidbey that are part of a chain. I mostly steer away from independent places because I prefer a consistent expected experience. However I have to say I only spent 2 nights on Whidbey, it is a very long island, and I didn't find Oak Harbor having much to offer. My regrets are I stuck with the main road the majority of the time and didn't do enough exploring and researching in advance to find a good beach or 2. Next time I come to Whidbey I probably won't be staying in Oak Harbor but it won't be because of this hotel.

Called the hotel to check on our reservation one day prior and they said they had no reservation in our name. Called IHG and they were not helpful. The hotel was even less helpful and downright unintelligent in their answers. We felt like they were blaming us for the problem. And by the way we are IHG regular members! All that to say, we were forced to find another hotel in another city far away. No help from IHG like finding us alternative lodging or compensation for their mess up. We chose to book Best Western...HA! I wouldn't use IHG ever again after this bungled mess nor want to deal with the Candlewood front desk staff in any other alternate universe.

The pictures online obscured this fact somewhat, but I could have been a bit more diligent in my research, too. Regardless, my wife and I enjoyed our experience here, and absolutely would stay again. We checked in late; past operating hours, in fact, but thankfully a (very friendly and welcoming) night attendant is always onsite (call the number posted online, or on the door to reach them), who got us situated in a handful of minutes. Our room was about what you'd expect from a motel: barebones, but clean, with a comfy bed, serviceable furniture, and all the (very) basic amenities. Great centralized location (both in Oak Harbor, and Whidbey Island in general) means that every point of interest is just a short drive away. Pre-packaged continental breakfast is served from 7am-10am in the quaint little dining area in the office building. Check-out at 11. Beds are clean and comfy. I learned retroactively that there are rooms with fireplaces, Jacuzzis, and apparently some small private cabins on the back of the lot, so if and when we ever return to Oak Harbor, we'll probably end up booking one of those, instead. Temper your expectations, and the Auld Holland Inn will meet all your travel lodging needs. If you, or your travel companions, are the types of people that spend more time in the hotel than your destination, and absolutely have to be pampered and pandered to for all their basic needs, try Captain Whidbey down the road. For the rest of us, looking for an inexpensive, convenient, off-beat, and memorable place to rest your head without breaking the bank, the Auld Holland Inn will satisfy your somniferous specifications better than a pair of wooden clogs...and more comfortably, too!

The Bad: On the first night of your 3-night stay, we reported that the bathroom floor was sticky and requested that it be mopped. We were told that it would be done the next day since housekeeping had gone for the day. The next day when we returned to the hotel, the floor was still sticky. We reported it again and were told that it would be reported to the manager and they would get back to us. The Ugly: We never heard back from management. We put our service request tag out and not only did the bathroom not get mopped again, but we also did not receive any clean towels or other cleanup. So, we arrived to a sticky bathroom floor and left with the same sticky bathroom floor. We will not be staying at Auld Holland on our next trip to Whidbey Island and we will not be recommending it to others.

I have to stress that the house is just gorgeous, and we have free access to all but private quarters. The setting is so peaceful, and it is lovely watching the horses. We had the Capt Don Suite, which was so nice. Two beds so we could get into a fight and sleep apart if we wanted to. (We didn't.) The suite is tricked out with all things pony. Very comfortable. We liked the place so much we have advanced reserved the Gallant Best suite for an upcoming stay, complete with ample living space, a crystal fireplace and hot tub all to our own on a little outside patio. Gregg is an amazing host and cook to boot! His breakfasts are generous and amazingly delicious--and on our three-day stay, nothing cooked for us was the same, so it was a joy to eat there. Plus Gregg is so fun to talk to. We enjoyed our breakfast time with him so much. I am not into B&Bs so much as I always feel like I am imposing on our hosts. Not so here. It was just comfortable, warm, welcoming and wonderful. There--a bunch of W-wonderfulness and wonders.

You need to come here with the expectation and understanding that these homes are a century old. They maintain them and keep them looking historic. That's the charm and appeal of these rentals. There is a road that takes you along the homes to the conference center and beach. The pool is only open in the summer. Love watching the sunset from the beach here. The home is old and floorboards squeak. But that should be expected. Decor is in keeping with the history of the building. We stayed in Unit 8, and chose it specifically because it said there was a shower/tub combo. While I would have enjoyed a soak in a big clawfoot tub, I wanted to make sure my grandparents were comfortable getting in and out of wherever we were bathing. It was perfect, and would be perfect for those with kids too. There are plenty of easily accessible trails with great views right out the front door. The kitchen was big and well stocked with cooking supplies, but we only ever used it to cook breakfast. We would often drive into nearby Coupeville for lunch and dinner, and there were plenty of great things to eat there! It's also within a very short drive of the trails at Eby's Landing. The views are amazing. It was still cool when we visited, but we could see how it could get hot. You don't really need A/C up in the Northwest, but a fan would be nice! We're used to sleeping with a fan, so we had to use a fan app on our phone because it's so quiet out there. The WiFi was good for what little we used it for (checking email and facebook mostly). Saw a lot of wildlife, including a mama deer and her two fawns. Overall, we had a very great time and hope to come back.

This lasted until 5 in the morning when they turned it off. Sure, occasionally you'll run into an inconsiderate guest. The next night, the same thing happened. I finally had enough at 4 in the morning and went to find the room and complain. When I knocked and knocked, no answer. I asked a woman in the lobby if the room was hers and she finally said it was but refused to turn the TV down.
