I ordered the Shawarma Platter and it was big on portions, but not so big on flavor. I love crispy meats, but these were crispy and dry. The beef and lamb, even the chicken were all dry. Luckily there were a couple of sauces poured on top to help it all go down. I was surprised there wasn't more flavor in the meats. I was excited to see the meats roasting on the spit, and my mouth started to water. But the dry meats were the central point of my meal. The rice was okay, the Greek salad was pretty good, I loved the hummus and the pita was divine. My wife had a burger with a fried egg on it and it was pretty spectacular. The beef was very juicy, cooked to medium and the bun tasted homemade. We also ordered Baklava, but it was not like any I had ever had. There was a lot of peanuts and it was very soft. I liked it, but my wife has a baklava fetish and she hated it. I just pretended like it wasn't baklava and enjoyed it on its own merits. The place is huge, but it's old and all of the tables were either dirty or had ripped cushions. So it's like a hole in the wall joint but a big hole in the wall. Omg!!! I haven't had food this good since I left New York! They sell a lot of ethnic foods that you can only get from someone who grew up in their country. They have a token burgers and fries, onion rings mozzarella sticks.. for you know Americans it's just really good authentic food. Huge dining area and extra grocery store. The portions are huge, it's cheap, it's fresh and it's really tasty. Each platter comes with a meat and 3 sides. I usually go for hummus, salad and tabouli. They have several different meats and kabob choices. I like the Andalusian chicken skewers, and the shwarma is really good as well. Breads and desserts are made fresh in-house as they have a commercial bakery side to the business. The food there was really delicious. Everyone working there was nice. The reason for this rating is lack of proper mask wearing by all but 1 of the male employees. I saw some wearing it under their nose and 1 was wearing it under his mouth the whole time I was in the restaurant. What really got me was that I was watching one of the cooks walk around wearing it under his nose over by the beverage station. By the time he got back to the grill it was now up over his mouth. The staff is extremely friendly and gracious. They also have baked goods and I'm dying to try some of the Moroccan Flatbread. Today, I got the mixed shawarma platter. The mixed grill is the bomb and the Alexander is gonna make you loosen your belt. I recommend sweats when you visit here. The lamb meats are all well seasoned and the sides are good. If I had to make a change, I would make the hummus a little thicker on consistency. The menu is pretty big and includes typical sandwiches, burgers, and even some options for kids. Nazareth Bread is my new favorite restaurant in Greensboro. From the pastries to the platters to the sides, everything is wonderful and reasonably priced; most entrees are less than $9. I'd wanted to try Nazareth since it opened a few months ago, but an excited phone call from a foodie buddy, extolling Nazareth's goodness, convinced me to give it a shot. In the past 48 hours, I've had 3 meals and 4 pastries from the place! (I look forward to trying some of the unusual side items they had on display; the orange-glazed carrot salad looked particularly intriguing.) The shwarma sandwich, which inspired rave reviews on a couple of Triad food blogs, has to be the best sandwich in Greensboro. The warm, perfectly toasted pita surrounded a filling of grilled meat, green peppers, lettuce, tomatoes, and a flavorful tahini-lemon sauce ($5.50, with potato chips). The seasoning was more delicate and a bit more complex (more authentic, according to Nazareth's cook) than similar offerings at other Greensboro establishments. With a filled pastry for dessert, this was an excellent lunch! For dinner, I had the day's special, Middle Eastern beef stew ($7.99 - see photo). The beef stew was similar to your Mama's southern beef stew, but with a dash of Mediterranean seasonings. The rice accompanying the stew was simply perfect: texture and flavor were spot-on. Accompanied by the locally-made stuffed grape leaves, this dinner left me stuffed and happy! However, the double Andalusian chicken kabob platter ($7.99) probably ranks as the best entree at Nazareth. Two long skewers of charbroiled chicken, rubbed with 7 spices, sits atop toasted pita bread with the tzatziki sauce, and is served with 3 sides; I chose the tabbouleh salad, hummus, and (yawn) seasoned French fries. The chicken came out very tender, juicy, and extremely flavorful, with a nice amount of char on the outside. The hummus was like silken heaven, and the tabbouleh was simply the best I've ever encountered (less parsley that most versions). Even the French fries were good, hot and crisp with a dash of spices. This was a HUGE meal and a HUGE value for your money; I couldn't eat another bite! The pastries range from the traditional French napoleon and American chocolate cake to the more exotic Middle Eastern varieties (I can neither remember nor pronounce - and let alone spell - the names; just pick the ones that appeal to your eye). My favorites are the Middle Eastern butter cookies (similar to Danish wedding cookies without the powdered sugar - $1.25/each) and the sesame cookies ($1.25/each). To the American palate, these cookies seem dry, overly flaky, and not-too-sweet, but I quickly adjusted my palate to enjoy them with a hot cup of tea at home. The only downside to this restaurant is the speed of the order-taking. If there is a line, it moves VERY slowly, especially when chatty Middle Eastern folks are ordering. (This could be a cultural difference, as Americans (like me) are used to zippy service and instant gratification.) The ordering system is also slowed by the fact that you order and pick up your food at the same counter. The restaurant is housed in what appears to be a 1970s-era grocery store. There is no decor or style to speak of, as everything (booths, display cases, tables, etc.) appears to have been purchased from second-hand dealers (the main display case in the open kitchen still has its Subway sandwich logos visible). The shabbiness of the fixtures, along with the cavernous space of the dining area, made me feel like I was eating in a bowling alley or church basement, though the food completely made up for this shortcoming. The most authentic and delicious mediterranean-styled food in the NC area (that i've found so far). They have everything from freshly baked goods to delicious shawarma! The service (people and quickness of food) were both great, and there is so much room/space to choose where to sit. The prices were pretty good in relation to how much food you would get per entree. Although it looks old and dirty, they always have a pretty high sanitation score for such a large establishment. Solid Mediterranean food! Their menu is extensive, so I stood there for a good bit trying to decide what to get! In the end, I decided on a shawarma sandwich and a shish kabob platter for my brother. The shawarma sandwich was a warm pita packed with shawarma meat, fresh lettuce and tomato, and hummus. It was quite large and after about half of it, I was pretty full. The shish kabob platter was a solid amount of food as well. It came with 2 kabobs of very tender, deliciously grilled lamb chunks, pita, and 3 sides. We chose fries (a little greasy and not crisp), tabouli salad (super fresh), and hummus (yum!) While waiting for our food, we wandered over to the cafe area and got 4 macarons for only $2.40 (with tax!)!! What a steal! They only had 2 flavors: pistachio and strawberry. i've been going here since they opened and they have progressively gotten worse and worse. The food used to be fresh and cooked correctly and that is no longer true. The people running the line seem to be more concerned about getting things out fast, then making them correctly or making them even edible to eat. I asked for something to be lightly grilled. They burned it then they served me some extra pita that was actually black and they expected me to think that that is acceptable. I will never return to this restaurant again I recommend you don't as well. I actually think they did these things on purpose to stop me from coming there since I asked for something to be lightly grilled and they just put a press on everything they cook on the grill so that it can be done quickly instead of just trying to make things have a good flavor Ownership should be on the line more watching what's going on instead of sitting down eating during a dinner rush.
