I loved Nectar Cafe when it first opened and for several years after opening. What happened? I haven't eaten there in a long time so decided to have lunch there and it was horrible. I ordered to go and the sandwich I ordered was terrible. It was soggy and tasted real bad. I couldn't even eat it. The side salad was okay but all it consisted of was lettuce and a few shredded carrots. While I was waiting for my order a huge insect came walking out of the corner near the table I was sitting at. So disappointed and not to mention I paid $18 for a sandwich I threw away. read more

I really love this cafe and have been here 3 times. Their food is fresh and healthy food that tastes delicious. At dinner and for the Valentines special dinner they have table service and at lunch you order at the counter. I recommend that they take down the sign at dinner that tells you to order at the counter instead of telling EVERYONE who comes in that they have table service and then switching out their menu. confusing and awkward and unnecessary. The table service needs a little work as it is clunky, unorganized and not polished but friendly and earnest. It seems like they are a work in progress and I work that I will continue to support and I feel like they are on the right track. The food as been the unifying factor and it is always good. I ordered the Jamaican burger. It was good, but not awesome, and I really could have done without the side of corn chips. But that's not why I'm giving it 5 stars. There's desperately few vegan options in the greater Sacramento area (and I should know, I've been coming up here before most people even knew what it meant) , and this place has a bunch of options, which I'm sure I'll try on another visit. Not only that, I ordered an off menu bean and cheese burrito for my son, which was apparently great and we got an Italian soda free with Yelp checkin and then accidentally doubled. The owner came and personally checked on everyone even though it was extremely busy, apologized for the meal delay (it came out in a perfectly reasonable amount of time) and we talked a bit. The vegan lime torte was good too, although not blown away. It's obvious he cares a great deal. This place is clearly a local favorite, and there was a huge line to order. I also had some odd encounters: A woman at one of the tables kept waving at me, thought I was her friend Will (she looked like Zooey Deschanel as it happened) The owner was sure I'd been in the previous day, but it was my first visit. The woman behind me in line looked like Jeri Ryan (you know, 7 of 9). I did run into my doppelganger a couple of years ago in Grass Valley, so who knows. I have found few vegan/vegetarian/gluten-free restaurants that have exceptional service by unpretentious staff and stellar food. Nectar Cafe is not one of those exceptions. A small group of us came to Nectar Cafe after a hike in Cool, CA around 2pm on a Saturday. The place wasn't really busy when we arrived and ordered, but it was busy by the time we left. Ordering at the counter was easy, but the young lady taking orders didn't smile, say thank you, and generally looked like she didn't want to be there. Our friend ordered a salad and received it less than 5 minutes of us sitting down. My husband and I ordered lemonade and grilled sandwiches and waited 10 minutes for the lemonade and 20 minutes for our sandwiches. Thankfully, we ordered chips and guac to hold us over, as our friend had completely finished his meal before ours arrived. And while the food was good, it wasn't anything special from other vegan restaurants. Honestly, I would come here again if a friend wanted to go or coming back from a hiking or camping trip with a friend who is vegan. Worth a second chance, but not worth a special drive up to Auburn. read more

I wanted to take a moment to redo my review from a couple years ago. My first experience at nectar Café wasn't a good one, and I left there with a bad taste in my mouth. I was standing in line when a couple came up behind me who knew the people at the register and they started talking and she took their order before mine. It took me a long time to go back, but when I did it was an enjoyable experience. From the food, to the service, to the atmosphere. I've yet to have anything that wasn't very delicious, and they have a wide variety of beers and drinks. Everything is organic and absolutely delicious! Kudos to Nectar Cafe!!! read more

There's just a lot of room for improvement here. I'm vegetarian and live blocks away. Both times I've visited I was left unimpressed for the price. The smoothies are good but should be $5 dollars at most. The nachos lacking spice, had little cheese and the chips are a bit stale from land of kirk. I'd be happy spending the $13 on a Rueben, burger or BLT if seasoned potato wedges or french fries were included. If you are going to use a lot of prepackaged foods and cut corners, fine but at least lower the price. $15 dollars for a basic salad isn't happening for me. read more

I have worked at vegan organic restaurants before an have grown to dislike the vibe and food. So my review is biased, but there service simply sucks. Either every one is little stoned and or just horribly spacey. It took them 15 minute to serve a desert that literally just needed to be taken out of a fridge. Worst part is that they did not have a busy restaurant that day. Maybe they where short staffed that day but it was pretty frustrating waiting for a 10$ slice of frozen banna pie. I asked for a slice to go, and decided to eat it outside by the fire pit. 15 min I get my pie, I opened it up and it was FROZEN. I went back and asked the server what deal was with serving frozen pie. All she said was " oh thats how we serve it to go it's supposed to melt a bit by the time you eat it" I looked at her and said well I don't think I am going to eat this. She looked at me with a spaced out glare and said "oh". Nothing else . I rolled my eyes and just walk out. Okay maybe I was being dramatic but when you pay 10$ for a tiny little pie you kinda feel like you been ripped off and expect the experience to be memorable. You know when you pay for overpriced desert you kinda want it to be fucking good. Right? Maybe it's just me.... I have eaten here many times, but don't get a chance to go there as often. I tend to either "build my own wrap" or get the quesadilla (with some modifications for my diet). The food is organic, fresh and very tasty. Ambience is cafe-like and there is a lot of space between the tables. They are kind of slow, so if you're in a hurry, this may not be the place to go during peak hours. When you enter, you have to wait in line by the cashier to order. They will usually bring your order out to you and they expect you to bus your own table. In the evenings they offer table service. They are vegan for the most part but have cream for their coffee, sell some muffins that contain eggs, and occasionally offer things with cheese. So if you're vegan, it's probably best to double-check at the time of order. They have a nice collection of vegetable and fruit juices (all organic and freshly juiced), and some awesome desserts. The place can be hard to see from the street as the sign is almost completely obstructed by a tree. read more

I drove to Auburn to check out Nectar Cafe's vegan challenge menu. Alas, they only had some items available and the rest on weekends. What I had was great and I like their offerings on the regular menu and on their challenge menu. I probably wouldn't have come across Nectar Cafe without the challenge. When I go to Auburn, it's for some hiking and I don't hang out around town but now I can stop by for a bite or some juice. They also serve my favorite coffee in Sac, Chocolate Fish! It's a small cafe with indoor and outdoor seating. You order at the counter, they give you a number to take to your table, they bring you your order. Utensils and water are to the left of the register for you to help yourself. On weekend dinner services, I think they have table service.. I've yet to check that out but I think I read that somewhere in the cafe. They serve Organic Vegetarian food and have Vegan options as well.. juice, smoothies, coffee.. I look forward to trying more of their food. Super busy. read more

Friday night Swiss cheese mushroom burger, grilled cheese ,tomato soup , Flourless chocolate cake, wonderful music , fabulous service! The young people that work here make it a great experience! I've been eating here for years and absolutely love the whole experience! A couple weeks ago I had their clam chowder with no clams but you would never know it , it was Delicious! And you also get points I have 147 but I have no idea what to do with them haven't even bothered to ask yet! I love that I have a restaurant that I can eat in and then I don't have to cook! I have been back twice since his last review. And the girls that work there are more interested in their own conversations than that of any of the customers they don't smile they look at you and stare at you blankly when you ask questions about their food. A beyond burger American style with cashew cheese & a bottle of GTS kombucha from their fridge. I ordered the same thing for my son but with American cheese. I earned enough points for a side salad and I was seriously full to finish that yummy salad when I snacked on my daughter's nachos, even though I had chips on my plate next to my burger. They had a slice pickle on the side of my plate. It tasted good, I just expected it to be crunchy, which was more on the little soggy side. Which was fine but I prefer fresh crunchy pickles. My burger tasted amazing, with lots of flavors that were not over powering and it's a definite MUST ORDER AGAIN, next to their supreme nachos. My daughter had it with cashew cheese and it was amazing with their quac!! I kinda wish I had some in my burger, even tho the thousand island & cashew cheese already balanced the flavors.. it seemed the guac made it more flavorful so next time I come here to order this I will ask for it on the side. I also like how each tables have pink salt and pepper for your liking on your meals. You have to get up though to get napkins & utensils, but at least they have plastic & silverware options. This is a long overdue review, but I was craving a matcha green tea latte with cashew cream this morning, and wanted to share my experience here. First of all, try the aforementioned. Matcha is a stone-ground green tea powder that is frothed and served hot with optional cashew cream. The result made my friend's faces melt upon first sip. They also have wine and beer options in their cooler, if that is more your jam. To date, I have tried the vegan grilled cheese with added avocado, the thai wrap (like panang curry shoved inside a burrito), the vegan nachos supreme (holy lord), and the vegan grilled tempeh...complete with "karma"-lized onions because, it's a vegan cafe in California. Essentially, if you're vegan, you are in Bizarro World at Nectar Cafe. You'll open the menu only to find you can literally eat every option listed. Not only that, the faux meat subs are diverse, not only relying on that delicious sponge of flavor we call tofu. The restaurant style is casual; you'll place your order at the counter, take a number, and find yourself a table. The wait is usually longer than you might presume, but if you don't have somewhere to be, it works out. When I worked in Applegate, calling an order ahead for pick-up was perfect. It's a small space, and the kitchen doesn't offer a massive facility. Embrace slow cooking. The dining area is cozy, and there are outdoor seating options in the warmer weather. So happy to have found this gem in old Auburn! Yummy vegan noms and fresh juice, doesnt get much better than that! I really miss having a juicer and have been craving a refreshing juice so I tried the Orange Sunrise juice, and had them add ice. Spot on, just like I used to make at home. Great balance of spicy ginger and sweet apples. I got the Thai wrap to take home for dinner. I should have gotten something else that was a little more substantial because its basically just spicy cole slaw wrapped in a torilla. Wish it had some avocado and tofu or beans or something in it to really make it a meal. Regardless, it was really tasty, and would def get it again. Excited to try the other things on the menu, I had an extremely hard time deciding what to try first! They have only been open for about four months I guess, and I can tell that they are new cafe owners because the service was glitchy and slightly inefficient (the cashier guy had just gotten off, so there was no one to take my order. After standing there for a minute the owner who was in a meeting at one of the tables got up to ask one of the kitchen staff to take my order, so a lady with food on her hands came to operate the ipad and square to take my order, but she didnt know how to ise it, so the owner ended up doing it anyway.) But I was greeted enthusiastically, and everyone was very friendly and happy to answer questions about the menu. Can't wait to go back! Update: I'm almost embarrassed to admit that I have been back so many times this week that the owner knows my name! Tempeh Reuben sandwich, folks. That's all you need to know. OK, perhaps you need to know a leeeetle bit more. My vegan girlfriend and I enjoyed a day trip yesterday out to Auburn, which included my first-ever stop at this green gem of a restaurant. You know you're in veg culinary heaven when you have the blissful experience of struggling among various tantalizing food choices, including sandwiches, some Mexican fare, lasagna, a veggie burger, and more (including vegan desserts). The GF and I decided to split a couple of sandwiches. She'd been to Nectar before and suggest the Tempeh Reuben. Now I've never been a big sauerkraut fan, but holy smokes, this sandwich was de-frickin'-licious, all warm and tangy and savory. Hands down, one of the best sandwiches I've ever had. We also split the Curried Hip Chick Sandwich, which fortunately did not contain a trendy baby chicken. It was tasty and unusual, essentially chickpea salad served on bread, with walnuts, cranberries, and curry sauce. Mild but flavorful, this was also a great choice. The restaurant itself was clean, casual, and comfy - with indoor and outdoor seating. Staff was nice and polite. We did have to wait a bit for our food (the horror!) - but hey, the place was crowded. I didn't fault them for that. Seriously, I would love for someone to scoop up Nectar Cafe and drop it 20 miles closer to my house, so I could go back frequently to try all those tempting veg offerings. But hey, now I have a reason to visit Auburn more often. read more

I went to Nectar Cafe for the first time last night and I loved it! I've been vegan for about 5 months now and I was so excited to check this place out. It did not disappoint! My husband and I got the guacamole and chips to start. I added a side of cashew sauce to dip and it's so yummy!! I ordered the burger for dinner. It was very tasty. It needed the sauce that came with it. It was a little dry but the sauce did the trick. We also tried the soup and wow!! So much flavor! We got the banana "cheese" cake for dessert and it was amazing! All in all, it's a vegan's dream restaurant. And for my omnivore husband, he was completely surprised by how much he enjoyed the food.
