As is my custom, I'm generally skeptical of sushi outside of major cities directly connected by air to Asia purely on the basis of supply chain and chef experience, but I mean it when I say that Neighborhood Sushi blended the authentic with the innovative in a way that both surprised and delighted. Star 1: How was the service and atmosphere? As far as atmosphere goes you might be surprised to find that the entrance to Neighborhood Sushi is tucked away in an otherwise nondescript parking lot off of South Congress. Typical compared to the polish and glam of an Uchi or Nobu? No, but a charm in and of itself. From there, the service generally shined with expediency and a personal touch. Recommendations were strong and service timely. Star. Star 2: How were the portions relative to the cost? I'm admittedly used to Los Angeles pricing, where nigiri easily runs double digits and mains and rolls can quickly top $30, so you can imagine the pleasant surprise of seeing what was valuable Texas pricing. Nigiri clocked generally around $6 or so and only hit double digits with specials and specialty items like king crab or wagyu. All in all this is likely standard for Austin but two of us got out of there with drinks to boot for under $250. Star. Stars 3 & 4: How was the food? Contemporary sushi is always a balance of the authentic with the modern, and neighborhood sushi walks that fine line in a way that caters to traditionalists and the adventurous alike. The tuna delivered as it should, the specials like the shima ahi Japanese striped jack had me loading up seconds, and the Wagyu and king crab nigiri made for the surf and the turf. Not only does genuinely spicy nigiri needs to be a broader trend, but the mains across the board will cater to those who don't want a conveyer belt of nigiri and we were very impressed with lobster stuffed shishito peppers perfectly battered in the lightest tempura. I'll point out that vegetarians will find themselves in very good hands. Two Stars. Star 5: Would you be excited to go back? Without a doubt. Came for lunch for the first time! It was easy to make a reservation the same day on a weekday. The entrance is actually in the back where there's also a small parking lot, which is always a plus in downtown Austin! They have lunch combos that include choice of tea and soup. Neighborhood Sushi is incredibly special to us, it's where I took my now fiancé on our first date and where we celebrated her most recent birthday. It couldn't have been a better choice either time. The yellowfin tartare is exceptionally fresh and beautifully balanced, the brown butter scallop is rich and perfectly tender (the surprise star of the show), and the fatty salmon just melts in your mouth. Honestly, it's hard to single anything out because literally everything on the menu is spot on. A fun sushi speakeasy with fun vibes! I heard you can't enter in through the street, you have to enter through the unlabeled door in the back. The majority of the seating is either at booths or at the sushi bar. The lighting and vibes inside are quite nice - not pretentious, but still elevated. An employee (very politely) told me that they do not allow extra lighting equipment (such as a selfie light), so I did not get the most aesthetic picture of my sushi. The sushi rice is firm and subtly tangy. - BBQ Eel Nigiri ($5pp): This one to me was standard, it tasted like unagi nigiri. - Yellowtail Scallion Roll ($18): Each roll comes with 8 pieces. The roll was very well balanced between fish and rice. There are crunchy slices of jalapeno adding a freshness to the roll. - Wagyu Roll ($33): By far, my favorite bite of the night! The wagyu was wonderful with the spicy teriyaki sauce. No it's not spicy, more sweet and savory. - Sweet Corn Nigiri ($5pp): I would pass on this one. It was just corn and rice. Yes, it was beautifully presented, but taste wise nothing too special. - King Crab Nigiri ($13pp): Another melt in your mouth, buttery bite. There are elevated bench booths, tables, and seats at the bar. The bar has a solid high wall so you don't really interact with the chefs as you would at a typical sushi bar seat. The entrance is tucked in the back through the parking lot on W Annie and not on South Congress. The high wall on South Congress hides about three tables; ideal for groups. One of my absolute favorite spots in Austin! This swanky little gem off South Congress feels like you've been transported to a hidden sushi speakeasy just steps from the main drag. You slip in through an unmarked back door off the parking lot and find yourself in a cool, romantic, dimly lit space. There's sushi counter seating, cozy booths, a private room for larger parties, and an outdoor area. The outdoor seating is a neat experience -- fully enclosed by shrubs for privacy -- but as someone tall with long legs, I found the tables a bit low and the heat noticeable even with fans running. I recommend making a reservation and arriving early, since the parking lot is small (though street parking is usually available nearby). Service here is always quick, and the food and drinks are consistently excellent. My go-to cocktail is the Drunken Angel -- like a sake piña colada -- creamy, dessert-like, and absolutely delicious. I also love the Asahi Super Dry beer, which a server once recommended instead of my usual Sapporo, and it's been a favorite ever since. The menu is phenomenal -- you really can't go wrong. The specials are always worth trying; on our last visit we had a bright, citrusy crudo that was incredible. Some of our staples are the snow crab roll, spicy salmon roll, and yellowtail scallion roll. And of course, you have to start with the miso soup and edamame -- simple but perfect. Egg drop was just okay, good texture but a little lacking in flavor. Grilled edamame was also pretty yum. I thought the nigiri and sashimi was very solid, some of the best i've had. Amazing fish quality and such good attention to detail with different and balanced flavor profiles. Very top tier. We got the snow crab and spicy tuna rolls. Both were fine, but i thought they were a bit overly creamy and soft. Fish wasn't really the star of the show for either, more just like biting into a creamy mixture which wasn't my favorite. Dessert was sensational and makes this 5 stars almost by itself. The miso butterscotch tart was phenomenal, the flavors and textures of the banana crisp and chocolate clusters really elevated this dessert. The kiwi sorbet deserves its own paragraph. Possibly the best sorbet i've ever tasted. Creamy, tart, sweet, fresh, bright, amazing texture, just unbelievable. It is home made with fresh kiwis and you can tell, there's even the little kiwi seeds still in the sorbet. I'll be thinking about this for a long time. My wife and I visit Neighborhood Sushi about once every three months for date night. As parents of a toddler, those nights are rare, and this has always been one of our favorite restaurants in Austin. Unfortunately, our most recent visit was disappointing. We had an 8:15 reservation but weren't seated until around 8:35. After being seated, we weren't acknowledged for another 10 minutes and eventually had to flag down a busser for water and then ask the hostess to send a server to our table. Service remained slow throughout the evening, the poached shrimp nigiri (my favorite) was overcooked, and the sorbet portion was surprisingly small for the price. What prompted this review wasn't just the experience itself, but the lack of follow-up afterward. I reached out through Instagram, submitted a message through the website contact form, and called the number listed online. The number connects you to customer service that's not even in the restauran. I was told someone would get back to me, but it's now been a week without any response. We've always enjoyed Neighborhood Sushi, which is why this was so disappointing. Restaurants have off nights, but ignoring customer feedback afterward makes it much harder to overlook. Update: Since I last posted this review, Steven, the director of operations, reached out. He listened to our concerns and addressed everything professionally. For certain, one of the best sushi restaurants in Austin, TX and comparable to any sushi I have had anywhere. We came early afternoon and it was pretty quiet. Although the restaurant faces the main street, the entrance is around the back and can be easily missed. Once inside, we were seated right away. They have booths, tables and a sizeable sushi bar. Never having been here before, I wanted to try a few things different than my traditional sushi orders at other places. We started off with Miso soup and the Neighborhood salad. The soup was good but it's kind of hard to make bad miso soup. The salad was okay... there are better ginger dressings. As an appetizer, we had the Miso glazed Sweet Potato Yaki. It is good and I do recommend. I just don't know what makes this a Japanese dish. To check the quality of the fish we had Yellowtail and Fatty Tuna Nigiri. The fish is incredible and you would have a hard time finder fresher fish. To finish, we had the Salmon Avocado Crunch hand rolls. I know we are in Austin where they seemed to make everything look like a taco... this place is no different. They even served them in what looked like taco serving platters. I did a Google search for a "tuna hand roll" and after looking at hundreds of photos... I never saw a single one that looked anything like theirs. So, before people start their attacks, when I read "hand roll" on the menu, I had a certain expectation and this was not it. The ingredients are good... but I did not want to eat something that is going to fall apart like a taco. And if I wanted a taco, I would have gone somewhere and ordered a taco. I wish I could have at least had the option; the server could have asked if we wanted it as a traditional hand roll. And before you tell me it's the chef's creation.... the chef is not paying me to eat this. I am paying, so yes, I do have certain expectations. There is another popular sushi restaurant down the street that is not nearly as good when talking about fish quality. But we do know of some other sushi spots in Austin that have equally as good fish and about half the price and more traditional.
