Oh baby have we been waiting for this new Neil's location to open up! Middletown is only 15 minutes away and we were shaking waiting for them to open. We've only been to their original Wallingford location once before, so we were eager to be back! We got here around 8am on a Saturday and just to be safe, called ahead to order our donuts and coffee. On this particular morning, calling ahead wasn't necessary but I'm glad they have the option! We ordered 6 donuts and I can't even describe how fresh they were. I favored their yeast raised donut, which was crispy yet soft - incredible! Their holiday special was a frosted berry donut and it was my favorite! Their pumpkin donut was another special that was delicious! It was a cake donut that was obviously 10x better than the one I've had at "Smunkin Smonuts" hehe. Their coffee is typical of any donut shop - not bad but not mind-blowing either. They have some great flavored coffees which are always fun but a little too sweet. This location also has a drive-thru, which is great! I can't wait for us to come here on a monthly basis whenever we pass-thru Middletown! read more

This place is amazing! Their donuts are on point folks! Light and fluffy when they're supposed to be and Cakey when they're supposed to be. My favorite is the Boston Cream. Dear Lorrrrd it's like heaven. Lots of cream and chocolate ( no skimping here) just don't buy them all on me! They have a huge variety and some I haven't tried yet but I will get there eventually! Welcome to Middletown, Neil's Donuts!! We've been waiting for you! This was a long time coming, we've seen the signs. We've waited patiently. We've waited not so patiently!! Then one day, the soft opening was here! I raced in to get my hands on some. Predictably, the supply was low. But the staff hustled and we were shortly on our way. Three short weeks later, the donuts are more plentiful. The staff is still hustling, and there's rarely a long wait, even though they're always busy. I'm not a huge donut fan in general, but Neil's makes the type of donuts that I do love. Nice and fresh, crispy not mushy. My favorites so far are chocolate (cake) glazed, and Bavarian cream. They also have muffins, coffee and breakfast sandwiches. I love their breakfast sandwiches - you can get on a roll, bagel or croissant. We don't have a lot of places to get a breakfast sandwich on this side of town, so I'm thankful for the addition. And there's even a drive through for those who don't want to go in. I love everything at Neil's! I've been going to there Wallingford location for years and now they have one in Middletown. Luckily my fat self is far enough away from both to not go their daily but when I am near one I have to stop. Their donuts are incredible! I have never had a better donut anywhere, Samoa is my favorite. I was around early enough to grab one of their cheddar jalapeño bagels on this trip , they sell out quick. They are delicious! As a reward for a good cardiology visit [you read that right], I stopped for donut purchase. This turned out to be a donut for me, donut for neighbor and a donut for lunch. Two raspberry glazed jelly donuts and a cider donut. The raspberry had enough calories to let me skip Thanksgiving dinner tomorrow [won't] and the cider beauty is waiting for me on the kitchen counter. It was Mobbed at 8am when I arrived and I had to laugh upon entering as there were several Police officers in line too The young lady who waited on me was friendly, polite, cheerful and fast. The selection offered at Neil's was mind boggling and I could easily have ordered one of everything- that's how good it all looked. This place is heavenly, and on the 8th day, Neil's was created. I can not tell you how many times I tried to photograph the dozens and dozens of boxes over the last three months. I failed on almost all attempts. The donuts never make it past 20 minutes in my possession. Truly the best donuts I have ever eaten. You have to get to Neil's earlier in the day to get the most selectional variety, like all donut shops. What blows me away about the service in this place. They are extremely patient with my persnickety palate and give terrific recommendations. I am willing to drive the hour it takes me to get there because the donuts are THAT fabulous. I've had donuts from this location twice now and they were incredibly fresh and delicious!! I am partial to the powdered with buttercream filling (both chocolate and vanilla) and the coconut donuts. Drive through AND inside. I've never had an issue with incorrect orders either. They also take allergies seriously! I just wanted to give you some feedback. While I love their donuts and coffee, the attitude of the people you have working behind the counter makes a WORLD of difference. I went to the Middletown location today to get iced coffee the person who waited on me was rude and did not listen to my order. When I clarified the order to ensure it was made correctly, she became irritated and gave me an attitude and was super rude to me when checking me out. While she did make the order again, it was obvious she intentionally did not make the order correctly as it was not what I had asked for...once again. After I was done paying, before I even had an opportunity to say "thank you", she said "you're welcome" in an incredibly snarky tone and walked away from the counter. I think my expectations were too high but I thought Neil's was a typical donut/breakfast sandwich place. I tried a glazed donut and the ham,egg, and cheese on a hard roll. When my good buddy and fellow Yelp Elite @pastathedogctjp recommends @neilsdonutsct, I'm going to listen! #iykyk Neil's Donuts are legendary in these parts, and rightly so. Pillowy soft donuts in so many varieties, all freshly made. There are even several Vegan choices! I got 2 dozen assorted flavors and still did not get every flavor on the case! Concoctions like Samoa and French Toast with maple frosting and cinnamon sugar coating are what keep so many coming back for more. The line can be out the door on weekends. I am so glad I listened to @pastathedogctjp's tip to get there early because the line started forming at 7:30 am while I was at the counter ordering! They had lots of eager, friendly and helpful staff, however, to keep the line moving. A half hour drive for donuts early on a weekend morning sounds crazy, but it is so worth it once you take one bite into the soft sugar goodness! This may become a weekend tradition!!! read more
