Found this salon through Groupon and really loved it! Kaitlin washed my hair and was super sweet and friendly. Kim did my haircut and was amazingly sweet and accommodating. She offered me coffee, tea, or water. She didn't mind when I changed my mind about the look I wanted. She even offered to flat iron my hair after drying it. I felt very relaxed and welcomed. The salon is really sleek and modern! Kind of a trendy place, but also feels warm and welcoming if that makes sense?! First time clients get 50% off on a facial...SWEET! My fiance and I came here for pre-wedding facials...he was not exactly enthused about the appointment when I told him, but afterwards he LOVED it! Perfect place for both of us. It's not a frilly girl spa which worked really well for us. Kate or should we call her "Kate the Great" is an esthetician extraordinaire! Loved the Aveda organic line of products. And this was not some kind of upgraded facial, they just use good stuff. She does a skin analysis, cleansing facial and one of the best shoulder/neck massages that I have ever had! Total bonus...two for one! Facial and massage. I absolutely hate when a salon puts those mitts on your hands and then leaves you for 10 minutes with a mask on your face....none of that at Nelson Group! The mask goes on your face and then Kate gives you an awesome shoulder rub! I do have to admit that I got so relaxed that I took a mini cat nap. I left with glowy skin and was completely relaxed! I came in the afternoon because I had a Groupon for $60 worth of services. It was a very nice salon, clean and modern. However, from the moment I called to make my appointment, I encountered rudeness. I tried to say on the phone that I was new to the area and I needed a stylist that was good at short, stacked cuts. I was pretty much cut off with a sigh and then "whatever when do you want to come in?". I kind of brushed that off and made my appointment. When I arrived, I was greeted warmly by who I think is Nelson and he was the only one who seemed to give a crap about my experience. I then met my stylist who barely introduced herself and did not shake my hand or even smile. We sat and I tried to explain what I wanted and I felt she wasn't really that interested in what I was saying. After what seemed like too short a consultation, she said "Ok so-and-so (don't remember her name) will shampoo you" and just WALKED AWAY from the chair. I was left standing there, saying okayyy where do I go now? I had to look around to find the sinks and ask someone else where I was supposed to go. The shampooer (who was nice) did a decent but short job of shampooing me and never offered any kind of treatment or conditioning. I was then ushered back to the chair and my stylist still looked less than thrilled about cutting my hair. She then yelled over her shoulder to the manager "I'm sick today you know!" and then turned to whisper in my ear that she had actually been drinking all the night before. I thought great, this is off to a good start! Thankfully, she did do a good job on my cut and I am really pleased with how THAT turned out but that's about it. She also spent most of the time talking to the stylist next to her and using profanity in every sentence. After she blowdried my hair and showed me the back, she ripped off the cape and said so-and-so will check you out, then turned and walked away. No thanks, nice to meet you, do you want to book again, handshake, NOTHING. She then immediately turned her back on me and went to sit and gossip with her friend at the nail station. Okay then. I went to the desk and presented my Groupon and the receptionist made a point to tell me THREE TIMES the tip is not included with the promotion, and even if it was there wasn't enough left of the $60 credit to cover a tip (my cut was $55). I tried to say no other services were even offered to me but she interrupted me again to say most people just don't get it that the tip is not included. Finally I had to stop her and say, " I know, I read it!!" She also made no effort to prebook another appointment or see how my service was. Normally I tip over 20% for my hair services but I only left $10 which was generous for that. I would only recommend this place if you don't mind spending about $70 on a decent cut that comes with a ton of attitude. Where I come from a little smile or handshake goes a LONG way in customer service. After reading other reviews, I was really looking forward to an hour of pampering but my experience was disappointing to say the least. I even gave myself some time to calm down so I would not be exaggerating on my appointment. I would not recommend trying this place unless you have some sort of discount because I would have been very pissed to spend $70 for this experience. I'm not super particular about much, but my hair definitely falls into the very small category of things I just need a certain way, or else. I like it big. I like it long. I like it orange. That's just the way I need it to be, or I'm very much not a pleasant person to be around. So one day I was hanging out, working on some super top secret stuff (not really, but I felt like I should liven things up a bit), when I realized I'd let my bangs go. They were looking like the kind of bangs you have in 8th grade when you think you can cut your own hair, then quickly realize that reality says, 'Nope.' So I did a quick search from the place where I stood for a salon that does blow-outs and perhaps could squish in a bang trim and got lucky when first result yielded Nelson Group, a hair salon (not investment banking firm, as I'd previously thought it to be) that just so happened to have an appointment open for me in 30 minutes. Yipeee! I have a regular salon that I go to about 50-ish miles away from here, but I was in one of those moods where if I didn't get my hair tended to and snipped right away, I'd go mad. Inside was really expansive. Tons of chairs, a make-up station, a mani station, mirrors everyone, all that. I was greeted by Nelson at the front counter with a mustachioed smile and friendly conversation. I got checked in, hung up my coat and was taken back to be shampooed after a short moment up front. I remember the shampoo clear as day because it was definitely the hottest temperature water I've ever felt on my scalp in a salon, but for me that was a good thing because I'm the type of person who won't rent an apartment before testing the shower to makes sure it gets up to at least the semi-scalding point. Plus the girl who shampooed my hair was good about asking if I was okay with the temperature, so even if boiling is how you like your water, I'm sure she'd adjust it for you in a jiff. The chairs are set up in a similar manor to a lot of Mario Tricoci salons, which took me a while to get used to. I'm not a super big fan of being that close to the mirror and the space for the stylist to store her tools and products definitely seemed a bit cramped. I had a hard time explaining what I wanted but I was able to pull up a pic of my desired bang length and my stylist cut it well, there were a few hairs that didn't make the cut and should have, but I was able to touch that up in just a few seconds at home. My blow-out was alright. I was glad that I opted to get some curls added in at the end because otherwise I don't think my hair would've looked all that different from me bow drying it myself. The curls that were put in were great, although I didn't do them any favors while walking to my car when it was drizzling. One thing that I really like is that they offer free bang trims and the total for my wash, blow-out, bang-trim, and curls was only $30. Not too shabby! read more

This place is not worth the price. Almost $70 for a manicure/pedicure, and I could have gotten a better job from a whatever nail salon for half the price. I took my mom to get her nails done, and the spa chair was completely broken. Not only was the foot bath not working properly, but the chair itself was broken. The nail tech was nice, but she did sloppy work on both the toes and fingers. I will not be going to this place again, as it is the second bad experience I have had there. The first one was when I had Nelson (owner) as my stylist. He is rude and condescending to both customers and staff alike. I came here on a Thursday night. It was pretty dead in the salon. Maybe only 3 other customers. Lots of other stylest standing around waiting. Great location! Downtown Palatine. Plenty of parking. So I came here for the keratin treatment because I bought a $99 living social deal. My hair was washed and the chemicals were placed in my hair. Then blow dried and straightened with a flat iron. Everything took about 1 hour. For the keratin treatment to last you need to use a special shampoo and conditioner which they sold for $20 each. Kris was my stylist. She was nice but we didn't talk much. I don't think I would come here unless I have another groupon or some sort of deal. read more

I have been going to Nelson Group on and off since high school, so for over 10 years. Recently, they've been my go-to salon for quality haircuts. I always know what to expect from their stylists and, although some of the stylists can be a little more expensive, they never let me leave disappointed. I also used to work at Nelson Group as a receptionist and it was clear to see that all of the customers were treated with respect. The assistants give GREAT head massages when they wash your hair. Color is always applied with a lot of attention to detail. The stylists make pleasant conversation and always seem to be very interested in you. They take care to know what you want from your haircut or color and gently suggest improvements when they know that you might be leading yourself astray. They'll never do anything that you don't want, so I feel safe in their hands. They also have a great aesthetician for waxes and skin procedures! There is a broad selection of high quality beauty/hair products from companies like Aveda, Bumble and Bumble, and Phyto. I always recommend this place to my friends! If you go, ask for Kris or Roland. They're the ones who usually cut my hair and I trust them completely. read more

First of all, she was late arriving to the salon. Second, once I was in the salon I waited for 30 minutes after being told twice that she would be right with me. I got treated as second class at best. I arrived at 5:16p for my 5:15p appointment. They "paged" a mysterious person named Sloan. Well Sloan must have been exceptionally busy as she NEVER came. As people finished with clients they went by reception and were laughing, looking at Facebook pictures. I waited 32 MINUTES until I realized there was nobody else with a client in back. Was Sloan at home?? Could nobody else help me? They were exceptionally attentive confirming my appointment twice prior to day of then just left me to sit there. They didn't even call or notice when I left, too busy on social media. Not assisting the guest at all. Not to mention some random person that worked there was walking around in bare feet on a dirty hair covered floor...the whole place is odd but most importantly no customer service skills. Went for a haircut and style. I brought pictures for reference. I do understand that my hair will not look exactly like the pictures, but the stylist should try to do what the customer requests. Nelson glanced at the pictures, said it was not the right cut for me, and proceeded to cut my "below the shoulder" length hair into a bowl cut grazing my chin. Befor e I could figure out what was happening, it was too late. My hair was cut evenly, and he took his time to shape the bowl, but this is far from what I wanted. I have a very round face and this cut totally accentuates something I try to mask. It took me a long time go get my length and now I have to start all over again. It's crazy because I've walked by the salon a number of times since moving to Palatine and never even once thought to stop in. I visited Nelson Group salon off of a groupon I found online a few months ago, which is a risk, but in this case it paid off. I was surprised at how big the space was, it's much larger than it looks on the outside. My appointment was at 7PM, when I arrived about 10 minutes early I thought they were closed because there was no one in the entire space except the woman at the front desk. She wasn't rude but wasn't overly welcoming, my stylist wasn't there yet so I sat in the front waiting area, but Nelson arrived and my appointment started on time. The one reason I would go back to this salon is because of Nelson - he is the single and only stylist I have ever had in my life who was brutally honest with me about my hair and what I need to do to get the look I want/be healthy. Previously other stylists have done what I've asked/worked off of pictures provided, but I felt like for the first time in my life Nelson gave me a consultation and told me what I desperately needed to hear. I understand thats a risk and not every client would respond positively to such advice, but I greatly appreciated it. He then gave me the exact cut that I wanted and I left satisfied with my experience. I'm about due for my next cut/color and will definitely be returning to this salon. I went and got my hair done by Sloane at the end of July. What I thought would be a great experience turned into a bad one. I showed Sloane pictures and we agreed what was going to be done. I wanted to lighten my balayage. I wanted to like this place, but it was so unprofessional. My hair somehow turned out brassy and uneven in certain areas. I couldn't tell until I got home because the lighting in the salon is so poor. I was embarrassed by how it looked. I got Sloane's number from a friend and reached out multiple times. I told her that I wanted to come in to get it fixed. She was very slow to answer and agreed to have me come in. I asked when she was available and when I could come in. She never answered. After reaching out multiple times I gave up. I had to pay money and go to a different place to get it fixed. The girl that fixed my hair was shocked that she didn't fix it and how she let me leave the salon like that. The building was clean, somewhat classy and presentable but that's about it. I came in enthusiastic asking for a modern pompadour and even bought a few pictures to show the stylist exactly what I wanted. She looked at it for literally only a second (which kind of bothered me) before saying okay and pointing me to the shampoo station. I told her I wanted to keep it longer on the sides and back and wanted it layered (as per the shown style), she shaved and used blending scissors instead.... My hair was long but I also found it sort of uncalled for that the stylist made a comment about the extra work and that it should have been cut sooner. To put it short the result was not was I asked for. I walked out with the sides and back shaved uneven, with uneven shaved patches as well. The top sides were two different lengths with a perceivable bowl cut type appearance and the front was cut short while the top was longer. The haircut I left with resembled an overly long misshapen Faux hawk style cut which was anything but a modern pompadour. I tried to just chalk it up to a bad experience and stay positive but a short while after getting home I noticed how bad it was and decided to go right back to have it at least fixed up a bit. The stylist that cut my hair had left for the day so I had to reschedule. I called once I got home to change the time cause I realized I couldn't make it at the previously scheduled time. This is the worst hair salon! I went to the ones daughter, Sloan for cut and color. On my first appointment she was 1 1/2 late. She barely apologised and her dad acted like it was just her. I left with bright red roots. I went back a day later for her to fix the roots and she was 45 minutes late. I guess, I'm dumb...I figured she just had a bad couple of days. The receptionist checked me in and notified my stylist that I was there. 5,10,15 minutes pass by and I haven't been checked in on. The receptionist hadn't bothered to look up from the computer screen. By the time 25 minutes passed by I got up and walked out. I wanted a complicated somewhat-punk partial mohawk complete with ombre pink dye, had the stylist Heddie suggested to me, and I am so impressed with her skill! I've never had a haircut turn out so perfect before. Heddie really listened to what I was looking for and did an incredible job, going above and beyond the service most hair stylists and hair salons offer. When my first round of pink hair dye faded right away, she even touched up the dye free of charge! This isn't a discount salon, but I found their prices to be extremely reasonable and the staff to be fun and personable. I used to go to the Nelson Group to a stylist who left to be a full time Mom and I loved her and the salon. I referred everyone who asked to the salon. After my stylist left my lifestyle changed and I moved farther from the salon. For four years I bounced from salon to salon never satisfied with the service or the cut. In December I finally decided to go back to the Nelson Group no matter how far away it was. Within a minute of seeing and touching my hair Nelson knew exactly what had been done wrong and how to fix it. And fix it he did! I left there feeling fabulous and like I had my hair back finally! And I am still referring everyone I know here no matter the distance. I have not in almost a decade ever had anyone not be completely happy with whomever they went to at the Nelson Group. I came here last night with a groupon. The first time I called to make an appointment the girl was kind of rude...either way they were booked solid so I waited a couple of weeks. When I called again a guy answered, he was really nice recommended Kris and the whole appointment process was super easy. I came in Kristie did my hair she was nice and held an easy conversation. I loved that they were open late. (My appt was at 8pm.) After my cut and blow dry I had a credit with my groupon so Kristie helped find something so I wouldn't have to spend money. The receptionist was also really friendly that night (I'm telling you I dont really know what was up with that first girl). I would definitely come back (even without a groupon) they're prices are pretty good and the people were friendly. It also had the look of an upscale salon without all of the stuffiness. p.s. I went in for a trim (specifically stated - JUST a trim) and I left with half my hair gone in a very weird shape with bluntly cut block layers. I have two chunks on either side of my head that hang like ears. I had to have this fixed by another salon, and to do that I had to lose more length. I had very thick long hair. Now I have medium length thin hair and I'm down 250 dollars for some extentions. Do not trust the owner of this place, Nelson, to touch your hair. Apparently, after reading reviews, I am not the only person he has done this to.... To quote another victim on here... "How does cutting the front third of my hair 8 inches shorter than the rest of my head like a big clump youthful?" this is exactly what he did to me. Worst cut ever. I can't decide which is worse, the incredibly bad cut I received from Nelson or the fact they he didn't listen to what I wanted and when I told him I was unhappy he told me I was wrong. He actually said that I didn't understand that the cut was more youthful. How does cutting the front third of my hair 8 inches shorter than the rest of my head like a big clump youthful? I look like I got caught in a weed whacker. I have had to wear my hair in a pony tail ever since this cut (not a great look for me). It will take a few months to grow it back out so I can get this mess fixed. Nelson, spend more time listening to your clients wants and less talking about your home renovation. First and foremost, I would like to mention that I was very satisfied with the service that I received from Nelson Group. I decided to try it on a whim because I had purchased the Groupon for a haircut and conditioning treatment. When I went in to use the Groupon, Lindsey was the stylist who took care of me. I actually have very unruly, wavy hair and she gave me a style that not only complimented my face shape, but also works when styled straight or curly/wavy. This was no easy task for her, considering the fact that the cut was a short angled bob that was graduated in the back, with hundreds of teeny tiny layers! (I think it also helped that: 1. She has curly hair as well so she understood my frustrations in styling and 2. She is roughly my same age, so we got along really well and she made me feel comfortable.) I loved my haircut so much that I actually went back 8 weeks later to receive a trim on this haircut. Pros: I received a fabulous haircut BOTH times! I have received many compliments on it and people I don't even know have stopped me just to ask where they can get the same great style. Definitely a confidence booster! Cons: I took away one star simply because when I walked in for my appointments both times, I wasn't greeted. I could see that the receptionist was busy on the phone, but she made no indication that she even saw me standing there at the desk. And since I had to wait for her to get off the phone in order to check in, my appointment started 5 minutes late both times (not a huge deal, but I wish she would have been able to pause what she was doing for just two seconds in order to alert my stylist that I had arrived). I tried going to a different salon that was a bit cheaper to see if I could get by, and I'll just say this--he did a great job, but it took him an hour and a half to reproduce what Lindsey did in 45 minutes (and didn't make me feel as comfortable and confident). **Also--just purchased the Groupon for two future haircuts--can't wait to go back.** read more

I am so pleased to have found Jola! After wearing acrylic nails for 30 years, Jola has started me on no-chip manicures. What a difference!! She removes the product and reapplies it totally at each manicure session. My nails are strong and the polish color lasts from one appointment to the next. I would describe the salon experience I had as mediocre. I don't have any serious complaints, but also don't have much to rave about. I received a decent hair cut, but have thought about going back to get it altered and fixed up a bit because the bangs didn't turn out exactly like I had hoped for. The only thing I am pretty disappointed about is the price. I was a first-time client and paid full price. When I left, they handed me a business card that said 40% off for first-time clients. I had made an appointment with Sloan to get a balayage. I didn't even get to get my hair done because the customer service was so horrible I walked out! I called late morning the day of my appointment to confirm my timing and they asked to bump it back because she was late. Okay no problem, my problem is they didn't reach out to me to inform me on that and I only called 2 hours before my appointment. I get to the salon 5 min early, a nice lady up front says she'll be with you in a minute. 15 pass by and I see Sloan just starting to cut a lady's wet hair! Extremely inconvenient and lost all interest in waiting around another 15+ for her to finish. I didn't have the extra 30+ minutes to wait around. Don't recommend, crappy service. read more
