This auto repair shop engages in unethical business practices and obviously the technicians lack the adequate knowledge and training to service vehicles in an appropriate manner. My son brought his car to the Uptown location after doing extensive research to diagnose the issue with his vehicle. He provided the information to the service manager and was told by the service manager that they had to perform a diagnostic for $89. After performing the diagnostic, he was told that there was something else that could be causing the issue but the they weren't sure if it would fix the problem. He was then charged ANOTHER $280 for diagnostics. Over $600 worth of repair work was performed, the problem was not fixed, and he was then given an estimate to do the procedure that my son told them was the problem in the FIRST PLACE!! Then he was told that the repairs he INITIALLY asked them to fix would cost almost another $6,000!!! If the issue had been correctly diagnosed the FIRST TIME, he could have declined the service and looked into other alternatives. When I asked if they would waive all the diagnostic fees at least, they were only willing to waive $200. I only asked for an additional 10% discount to make things right, and was denied. So not only did we pay for repairs that didn't fix the car, but the manager did not think they did anything wrong. This is totally unacceptable. I would not trust this business to complete ANY car repairs. Potential customers would be better off paying extra to go to a reputable dealer. read more

DO NOT BRING YOUR CAR HERE! They are trying to scam you out of your money by treating you like a moron. I've waited a couple of months to write this review to judge the condition of my car after I ended up having it repaired somewhere else, and it's obvious to me that I made the right decision of not trusting Nelson's. I accidentally accelerated my car with the parking brake on, which made it have screeching noises coming from the back and felt like no power was going to the back wheels. When I took it to Nelson's, they called me the next day and gave me an estimate of over $4,000 (which I attached to this review). As I looked at the estimate, it was strange that they wanted to fix things that I had just gotten replaced, such as the battery that wasn't even a month old, the engine valve cover gasket which was two months old, and a full oil change which I had just gotten done two months ago as well. When I went to pick up my car, I was greeted by the person at the front desk and someone who I assume is the main technician. They told me that my car was a disaster and leaking oil everywhere, and that it NEEDED all the repairs listed on the estimate just for it to be able to run again. I told them that I wasn't going to be able to afford that much money and that I was going to take the car with no repairs. The person in the front desk asked me "Out of curiosity, what are you going to do with the car?" to which I replied that I was going to take it to a junkyard since I couldn't afford the repairs. I was able to notice a hint of guilt from the front desk person after my answer, but the main technician doubled down on the fact that it was absolutely necessary to make all those repairs since the battery was "old", the engine area was a mess of oil, and that it was in disastrous condition. Since I could feel something was off, I decided to get a second opinion and took it to Parents Autocare. The estimate could not have been more different. At Parents Autocare, they told me the only problems were the broken parking brake (obviously) which was causing the screeching noise and the alternator which was causing the electrical problems. They even told me that car was in great condition aside from those issues which I had caused. You can take a look for yourself at the pictures of the estimates! It was around $700 and the car works perfectly, which is what Nelson's was telling me was not possible without $4000. Nelson's didn't even list the broken parking break or the alternator in their estimate! And so they are either scam artists trying to treat you like a moron and stealing money from you, or amateurs that you don't want working on your car because they will charge you for replacing everything else except for what's broken. Take your car to Parents Autocare instead where they will treat you with respect and tell you the truth, or anywhere else that isn't here! read more

First time using this automotive shop, will NEVER go back and definitely do not recommend!!!! Our plan was to take our SVU for an estimate on repairs (was at the shop for a week), on the day of our pick up after deciding not to move forward with the repairs at the shop we noticed the car had been gone through. Upon picking up the car there was no sign of forced entry, which led us to believe the car had been left unblocked by staff. Immediately after incited we called the shop to see what we could get help in, in regards to this (minimum to file a police report) left voicemail and till this day have not received a call back with any information or further assistance. read more

I'd received a quote for TGK Auto to replace solely my front and rear driver's side struts for over $5k; which was absolutely ridiculous! So, I sought a second opinion from Nelson's and, guess what?! They could replace all four struts for 1/4 of the quoted price from TGK. Not only that, but they got me in the next morning and my vehicle was done by Noon. The service was great and it does have warranty. I'm thankful to Nelson's; for their kindness, their honesty, and their ability to be flexible and get my vehicle in-and-out next-day. Brought my truck in to Nelsons because it was overheating. Figured it was the water pump but I was mostly optimistic. Derek said it would be a couple days before they could get to it. They were able to knock it out with-in a day! Called me back next morning. Unfortunately my head was blow... Derek was understanding and was willing to give me some advise on what to do. Nelson's has been great for my car. They always get things done quickly and own any mistakes that might happen. We had an alternator and battery put in 18 months ago and both died in the recent cold. Luckily, my car died about 50ft from Nelsons and I was able to call Doug and have him send a guy over with a battery who drove my car to the shop. They found me a free ride home as well. I left the car over the weekend and got it back, all fixed up at no charge due to the warranty. If you live near a Nelson's, use them. They are way better than the expensive dealerships I have used in the past. read more

Dont waste your time here! Just had a pretty awful customer service and overall experience - I scheduled an oil change yesterday, they told me it would be 25-30 minutes, so that was great! Well, the next day I brought my car in at noon, he said it would be an hour until it was ready because they were backed up - I had to think about it since I was due back at work for meeting in an hour but I decided to risk it..I was wayyy overdue for an oil change so I decided to stick it out. So I walked around the shops nearby trying to kill time (anxious about the meeting i was probably about to be late for) and walked back to Nelsons exactly an hour later. When i got there to pick up my car, I noticed it was right where i left it which i thought was odd? Well turns out they hadnt even started working on it yet - And not only that, but when I asked about my car, they didnt seem to care at all that they "didnt get to it". I couldn't believe it - Ive never had worse customer service in my life. I told them (pretty nicely) that I was late for work because of this and they showed zero remorse. I snatched up my keys, ran out of there and will not be back. Wasted an hour of my time for nothing. read more

I have been to Nelson's four times from jobs ranging from several hours work to something so quick and simple they took care of it in a couple minutes and sent me on my way. I am new to this state! Go Michigan! My 94 suburban decided to quit running on me about 2wks ago I took it to Nelsons on Lyndale they told me I needed a new motor. I am like wow well they gave me a reasonable quote and when I returned from Michigan my truck was ready by friday running great. Now I will be taking it there for any of my problems. We brought our car to Nelson's once in 2016 - they fixed a problem with the exhaust, but fit it wrong and it left us with a very loud helicopter-like sound every time we drove. I had to argue to have them look at it again and they succeeded in reducing, but no eliminating the sound. I was in a situation where I needed to leave MPLS and drive east in a few days, so I felt like my back was against the wall and couldn't work with them anymore. They also looked at our air conditioning system, which did not work, and told us it would cost close to $800 to fix. We ended up making the above mentioned drive from MPLS to the East Coast with no air conditioning in summer heat because we couldn't afford to fix it. I got the A/C looked at a year later (the next summer) by a trusted family mechanic who said it was just an electrical wire problem, and replugged it, not charging us any extra. This place is the best auto care shop in the Twin Cities. The only other shop that comes close is their other location on NE Hennepin Ave. Sometimes they get busy but they're always straight forward. No passive aggressive hemming & hawing at this shop. This is the only auto care place that's ever called me after having work done just to make sure I'm happy with the service & quality. Other businesses (Parents Auto Care for example) have created problems just to add charges too the bill, but not here. When your mechanic tells you it's gonna cost 3 grand to get your car running again, take it to Nelson's & let them do the work for 5 hundred. You'll be happy you did. I'll certainly never again make the mistake of bringing a vehicle anywhere else for service. read more

Great and trustworthy place to take your car for repairs! Took my Dodge Challenger in on a Friday to replace the oil sensor (after calling and getting a very honest and detailed quote over the phone). They called me to let me know another adjoining part was also broken and in need of repair ASAP. They ordered the part from a dealer as quick as they could and fully replaced both parts. They called me daily to give me updates on the order, timeline, pricing, etc., which was greatly appreciated! They even brought out my broken part to show me how it was broken when I picked my car up. Clean shop, easy location to find and access, and their pricing was right in line with other quotes, if not better, than other local shops. I highly recommend Nelson's Auto Repair! After being contacted by the owner over my original review, I'm writing another to reiterate a few points: 1. $410 worth of repairs were made on my car without my permission. I simply got a phone call from the uptown location that informed me, cheerfully, that my car was done. I wasn't given the option to say, "no thanks, I'll try someplace else." This included replacement of headlights, tail lights, wiper blades that were all in working order or new. AFTER this repair, the alignment on my car was damaged, and they weren't able to fix it after bringing it back to the shop (with a shady excuse about my newly replaced tires). They then quoted me another $400 repair that I would need "in a month," but when I took it to a shop in northeast, they said no repair was necessary. It's now been a year and the car runs fine. 2. Nelson's quoted a friend of mine $800 in repairs on her car. When she took it elsewhere, she was told no repair was necessary. My point is that if they tell you something is wrong with your car and it's more than the cost of an oil change, get a second opinion. 3. I am making some weighty accusations against the shop, because they're substantiated by my creeped out experience. What you're doing by contacting me and attempting to put me through more of this crap is called 'gaslighting,' and I'd appreciate leaving it behind me. Nothing I hate more than being treated like the blonde girl who doesn't know how cars work. Tables turned here - they "corrected" me on the oil I wanted for my car, which I decided to pay for and let slide. But the next day on my 8 hour drive I found that my oil gauge was not reset and the plastic exterior shield under my car was not replaced properly. Now I'm in a two day repair spree to reattach everything to my car so I can make it back to Minneapolis, where I will not be returning to Nelson's in the foreseeable future. read more

Took my car in for a simple oil change/checkup. I should have been suspicious when I was told that they may not get to me before the next day (Sunday) but ended up only taking 20 minutes. They charged me for an oil change yet didn't add any oil. Oil level remained at less than 50% and I verified manually with the dip stick. read more

Beware, Nelson Auto does not stand by its work! Do business with this shop at your own risk!! They replaced the Gearshift Knob of my van in March 2019. In September 2019, the keys would not eject fron the ignition. I took the vehicle to another mechanic for a diagnoses. Was told the problem was the Gearshift Knob and that it needs replacement. I told the mechanic that the Gearshift Knob was just replaced 6months earlier. The mechanic then told me to take the vehicle back to Nelson's Auto for a do-over; that the Gearshift Knob is defective. I took the vehicle back to Nelson's Auto. Doug Benson told me the work was warranted 2yrs. I said great! Except, this shop gave me the run-around and won't do the replacement. Each time I scheduled an appointment and took the van in, Doug Benson would come up with a counter excuse not to do the job. The excuses were one after another, and lies after lies!! One time he kept my van for 3days & did absolutely nothing while I missed 3days of work for lack of transportation. When I called to see when to pick up the van, Doug Benson told me they were not done working on it. I returned to the shop and took back my van. Then, he promised to give me a loaner-car. But he NEVER came true on his promise either. He had many excuses why the loaner-car was not available or drivable. He promised in October 2019 that he would call me when the loaner-car becomes available. To date, still no call. I have totally run out of patience with Doug Benson. SHAME ON YOU DOUG for not standing by your work nor your word! You lie too much and take customers for granted. read more
