A trip to Boston would not be complete without a stop at Neptune Oyster! Got there about 10 mins after they opened and only had to wait about 15-20 minutes for a table for 2. I've heard lines can get long but they definitely met my high expectations and lived up to the hype! --Oysters: Fresh and (mostly) locally sourced, appreciated how they had specific recommendations. Also loved how each oyster was very well cleaned and shucked --Jonnycake: A sweet-savory combo that was interesting as it was yummy! Loved the crunchy edges of the pancake that contrasted with the chewy center. The umami from the fermented fish paste and the roe went well with the sweet syrup. --Sea urchin toast: Sea urchin compound butter on top of warm bread --Squid ink risotto: A Friday special that featured a good amount of squid and lobster pieces. Risotto was well cooked and the sauce was well-seasoned! --Lobster roll: Very generous with the lobster and the bun was warmed and buttered. Had a wonderful time at Neptune Oyster, starting off with not having to wait! We were lucky enough to roll in at about 3:30 on a Wednesday and grabbed two spots at the bar. Our server, who was a little brusque at first, gave me two different tastes of wine, which helped us land on a bottle of the Picpoul to pair wonderfully with all the seafood we were going to enjoy! The Lobster Roll (hot) with fries ($41) was very tasty, full of lobster and paired with a vat of extra butter. The Clam Chowder ($15) had delicious clams in it, but I wasn't in love with the soup itself. The Wednesday pasta special of clams with bottarga ($35) was delicious. A pricey meal, but very good with an energetic and attractive space. We considered trying to go here again, but there were other delicious places to try before we left the city. read more

This place is super popular for seafood, and there's always a long line outside. They don't take reservations, so you just have to hang tight. We ended up waiting over two hours because we had a party of four. We also let a party with someone disabled get seated ahead of us. A couple could've probably snagged a spot at the bar quicker. The oyster selection is huge, just like the name suggests, and they're seriously delicious. The food overall was really good and kind of unique. I was visiting in town and my cousin who is a foodie took me to Neptune Oyster. After visiting I can see why people wait in line down the street to eat here. We did a sample of all small plates. We got the bluefin crudo, scallop crudo, clam chowder and the johnnycake. Everything was fabulous but my least favorite was the chowder. I like my chowder little thicker. My surprising favorite was the Johnnycake. I wouldn't have ordered it unless my cousin convinced me. I recommended it on every visit. There was a line out the door when we stopped by at 12:30pm on a Saturday. The wait was an hour long for 4 people. The restaurant is quite small. There is both bar seating and table seating. Ordered the Maine lobster roll with hot butter and arugula salad. This was good and very filling. The lobster pieces were big! They did not skimp out. It was $39 for a roll. During my recent trip to Boston, I was excited to visit Neptune Oyster after hearing rave reviews about their lobster rolls. Unfortunately, my experience was far from what I had anticipated, and it ended up being one of the most disappointing dining experiences I've ever had. Here's why: Neptune Oyster is a small, cozy seafood spot located in the charming North End of Boston, a neighborhood known for its vibrant atmosphere. The restaurant has a great selection of seafood, with wine and beer options. My friend and I arrived around 4 pm on a Wednesday, and there was no line, so we were able to walk right in. After standing near the bar for a few minutes without any acknowledgment from the staff, it wasn't until we made eye contact with a server that we were greeted and seated. Despite this interaction we were still eager to try the menu. As the evening went on the service was cold and unwelcoming. Every time we asked our server a question, she responded annoyed. She never checked in on us, nor did she ask if we needed anything during our meal. To make matters worse, we observed her being warm and friendly with other customers yet, when she came back to us, her attitude was noticeably different, almost as if we were an inconvenience. The lobster roll had nice sized chunks of lobster but it was unfortunately lacking in seasoning. All in all I would not recommend this restaurant because of the poor customer service. After reading several other reviews where guests mentioned similar negative interactions with the staff including being yelled at. To spend your hard-earned money at a place where you don't feel valued as a customer is sad. There's plenty other seafood spots in Boston that you could have a better experience at. read more

First time in Boston and that meant I was hunting for lobster rolls! Did my research and Neptune Oyster was the overwhelming favorite. Stopped here around 6 pm on a Wednesday and must have gotten super lucky because we waited for five minutes. We ended up sitting at the bar, but I didn't really care because...again, five minute wait. Can't complain! Overall, I was very impressed by the food itself as well as the plentiful oyster offerings. A rundown of what we ate: 1. Lobster Caprese: A great starter! There was so much lobster on top of the dish that I totally forget there was actually caprese on the bottom of it! Not too heavy and a sign of good things to come. 2. Oysters (Neptune Pearl, Katama Bay, Cuttyhunk, Unicorn, Kumamoto, Oishi) and Jonah Crab Claws: There were SO many oysters to choose from that it was hard to pick. All of them were so good! The crab claws were good too, but I would probably skip on these as it was a big pain in the ass to actually eat them. 3. Wellfleet Clam Chowder: Can't come to Boston and not eat clam chowder too right? 4. Main Lobster Roll (hot with butter): This is what I came for and boy it did NOT disappoint. Huge chunks of lobster on top of a a great lobster roll. Absolutely superb! 5. North End Cioppino: This was the dish that surprised me. I like cioppino in theory, but in reality it can be a letdown. Not this one! The fish and seafood were super fresh, the sauce wasn't too heavy, and having rice instead of noodles was actually a welcome change. Really enjoyed this one. Staff were great here. Despite it being very busy in here, everyone in here kept things moving. Glad I got the chance to eat here without a long wait. Stunning seafood in a charming spot that feels like a cozy neighborhood spot. Came 5 minutes after opening for lunch and were sat right away at the bar. The place was already full and bustling. We only sampled a few med-salt oysters, but I ended up wishing I'd made them my whole meal because they were AMAZING, just fresh and perfect and made somehow even more perfect with their mignonette. Our entrees were the seared scallops and the Acadian Redfish and chips. The scallops were buttery and tender, but the sweet turnip whip didn't quite hit with me, and I felt some acidity would have been nice. The Acadian Redfish was similarly beautifully cooked and flaky, but didn't taste like it had a lick of salt on its own. The included malt vinegar aioli was great, but also necessary to add flavor to every bite of fish. Dropped by Neptune Oyster after a long day after hearing great things about their lobster roll and oysters! I got there around 5PM on a Wednesday and there were only a couple seats still open. I got sat at the bar and was quickly greeted by friendly staff. I ordered the lobster roll with fries and some oysters from their sheet. The oysters were pretty good, but the sauce that comes with it really brings the flavors together. The lobster roll was packed with lobster and came with a giant side of fries. Neptune Oyster is worth every bit of the hype. I always start with a bottle of wine and let the waiter pick and I've never once had a bad rec. The Johnnycake is a must, and my husband and I usually split the lobster roll so we can try a second entrée (always something new and always a win). If Uni is on the menu, don't hesitate. The room is clean and light in mood but lively and full of energy. It's friendly and cozy, so even when you're packed in with everyone else it feels fun instead of annoying. The best trick is showing up ~20 minutes before opening to beat the line. I bring every out-of-towner here, and it never disappoints -- never a bad bite. One of my colleagues recommended I go to Neptune Oyster, and wow, am I so glad I did! I made my way to the North End after my work conference concluded, and armed with an audiobook to listen to, I stood in line with the other eager diners. So you're in the know: You can't make a reservations; it's walk-in only. But while you're waiting, you can watch the staff shuck oysters from the large window in front. And the hostess was On * Top * Of * It. She regularly came out to see how large groups were, and as guests cycled through, she would pull folks from the line. I only had to wait 20 minutes or so at around 6 p.m. on a Monday. As a party of one, I got a seat at the bar, which was a great vantage point to see all the action in the restaurant. And like the hostess, the bartender was quick to serve and keep meals moving along as well. I order oysters because ya just gotta. I got a paper menu and was able to write how many I wanted. I wish I had gotten more. I also got the Monday special, which was the lobster spaghettini. Just wow! I really can't believe I ate the whole plate because it was a lot, but it was really just that good. Eating at Neptune is a must if you visit Boston. Such a lovely oyster and lobster roll dining experience at Neptune! There is always a line of people out the door, so it's not hard to locate. On Tues at 7pm, we waited about 20 mins ( which was a lot LESS than what we expected) and sat at the bar. Servers are attentive and friendly, very busy though! It's a fun experience sitting at the bar so you can see the worker shucking the oysters. You get to choose all the oysters you want (can choose from 1-12+)!. It is quite a small and crowded space with dim lighting , but it all adds to the intimate dining experience! Clam chowder, loaded with clams and potatoes, not too heavy and a good appetizer to share. Mussels - comes with freshly toasted and buttered bread which was delicious when dipped in the mussel stew. Lobster roll - choose between hot and butter or cold with mayo. Review is for the two days in a row that we went to Neptune while we were in Boston lol. First evening, we landed, dropped our luggage off and beelined over to Neptune. Thankfully, the line wasn't long and took just about 30 minutes on a Tuesday night. We had three of us so we were eventually seating kind of at a largish table, sharing with two guys to our right. Second afternoon (Wednesday), I guess you can call it a late lunch but we were dropped off in the area after doing some sightseeing and noted there was no line so we popped in and were seated at the bar fairly quickly. Oysters, lobster roll, razor clams casino, clam chowder, johnnycake, mackerel and halibut crudo (special of the day) were all strong. Fries that came with the lobster roll were amazing and hit the spot. What we would probably skip next time were the uni items. First night, it was the pasta special (uni bucatini) which was brothy and had bits of uni in it - pleasant pasta dish but not super uni-y. The next day, we got uni toast which did not have visible uni on it but instead a uni flavored butter. I guess we'll save our uni-eating for back home on the West Coast. The place is always going to be a tight squeeze but it's part of the charm. The only issues arise when neighbors are inconsiderate of space and spread out their stuff in your way. Service was efficient. Plate was not presentable and average tasting. I got the lobster soup and it was good, meat was soft and fresh. I also got the lobster roll and the meat was overcooked a bit. Some parts were chewy. And the whole thing sits in a butter which softens the bread. I really wish the butter was on the side instead. Decent flavor. The atmosphere here is not all what I was expecting. It is tiny on the inside, and you have to wait outside for a server to come out and seat you. The food and service were fantastic, but it wasn't very comfortable cramped up at the bar right next to the door (and freezing every time someone went in or out). We tried a variety of oysters, all of which were freshly shucked in front of us and delicious. Their mignonette sauce was the best I've ever had. There was some sort of seasoning in it that was absolutely perfect with the oysters (but not too overpowering). The lobster bisque was one of the best I've ever had -- with huge lobster chunks. So good! The lobster tacos were also fantastic and had a very generous amount of lobster. I loved the big slice of avocado on each one. I feel like they should be called tostadas, though, because there's no way you're eating these by hand. It's a knife & fork meal, for sure. I loved the food, and the atmosphere isn't bad as long as you know what you're walking into. This is not anything close to an upscale restaurant space. Came here on a Tuesday around 1:45pm. Found street parking near the entrance but it was a narrow road. Got seated right away. We really wanted the fresh sea urchin, but it wasn't available. Luckily, their Tuesday special was the sea urchin bucatini so we got that with clam chowder, raw oysters, lobster clam bake, and the lobster roll with fries. . Our favorite was the sea urchin bucatini. The flavor was delicious and the noodles were perfectly chewy. The 2nd best thing was the fresh oysters. They have an extensive list of fresh oysters. It was good and I didn't mind it but it was super liquidy. My husband thought it was strange so if you like creamy clam chowder, this isn't for you and I would skip. I had been looking forward to visiting Neptune Oyster based on reviews and write-ups on Eater. On a Sunday afternoon, I lined up there with 4 friends to try it. We were in line for about 45min. Given how busy this place got, we shared a table with other diners, which was fine with us. It's a very tight and cozy space. I tried two things: - Clam Chowder: Disappointing. I understand authentic chowder is thin, which it was. But what was disappointing was lack of flavour. - Lobster Roll: Also disappointing. The lobster was overcooked and chewy, and the bread was slightly dry. The accompanying fries were actually the best part of the meal. Service is friendly enough, given that they were rushing to keep pace with the volume of customers. Overall, I can't say I understand the popularity based on what I had. The seafood options in Boston are nearly endless and everyone has their favorite. Since my hotel was near the North end of Boston, I decided to checkout Neptune Oyster. Here are my ratings only for the cafeteria portion of the supermarket: Quality of food: okay. I tried their Acadian Redfish and chips. The redfish fillet were perfectly fried and crispy and came with a delicious aioli dipping sauce. The fries were salty and crispy. Their clam chowder, however, left me pretty disappointed. There was a lot of cream but hardly any pieces of clam. I really dislike when a place that charges $14 for clam chowder skimps on chowder and gives you mostly a bowl of cream. On top of that, the soup was served at almost boiling temperature and instantly burned my mouth. Décor: cozy/crammed. This place is very crammed and you have to sit shoulder-to-shoulder which could be good and bad. The good is that it adds to the ambiance but the bad is that if the folks next to you are big and tall then it makes you feel extra squished. Cleanliness: good. The bar area was being kept clean. Service: okay. The bartender was attentive and quick but did not ask how my food was. I was hoping she had so I could say how disappointed I was with their clam chowder. You also have to stand in line no matter what night you go as their is no way to make a reservation. Price: very high. The fish & chips were $33 and the bowl of hot cream...errr...clam chowder was $14. There are tons of options for great seafood in Boston and perhaps Neptune is a great place for oyster but...maybe that's about it. Servers are very friendly. The food in descending order: Clam Chowder - this was one of the best chowders I have ever had. Large clams and plentiful. Really good clam flavor and very rich and creamy. Lobster Roll - we got the hot buttered version. Tons of lobster. Simple, but satisfying. Comes with a ton of tasty fries. Oyster Piggybacks - this was very interesting, but in a good way. It was like blueberry cornbread dessert topped with pork and a fried oyster. Honestly, I didn't really know what was going on, but it was a fun dish. Urchin Bucatini - the special - this was very interesting, but in a weird way. The sauce wasn't thick enough to cling to the pasta, so most of the bites tasted like wet pasta, pork, and cheese. The sauce was a thin soup consistency. Tasting that, I got more of the urchin flavor, but it was pretty tart. I have mixed feelings about the dishes we ordered and certainly was not a fan of the wait. If you do decide to come here, I would definitely recommend the chowder and lobster rolls. Neptune Oyster is quite good. It's obviously very popular. We were third or fourth in line on a Sunday morning, getting in line around 10:30 or just before, for an 11:00 a.m. opening. I recommend improving the waiting experience with some cannoli from Mike's, which is what we did. We ordered shrimp cocktail, a crudo special, and the whole roasted mackerel. The shrimp had no flavor. I don't know if I can blame Neptune--anywhere I've had shrimp lately, it has been flavorless, so perhaps it is the quality of the shrimp supply, and the succulent, briny shrimp cocktail of my youth is no longer. Anyway, that was disappointing. Our whole roasted mackerel came before the crudo, which was also disappointing, because we could tell the kitchen forgot once we inquired with our server. However, we loved the crudo. I forgot to take a photo, but it was delicious. We also loved the whole roasted mackerel and requested some bread for the Veracruz sauce, which is rich and delectable. Service was friendly enough. I'm glad I visited, but I see no need to return. The meal was very good, but the cramped, family-style seating is super uncomfortable, and if I want to relax and enjoy an amazing meal in Boston, Neptune Oyster is not the place. Came here the first Thursday in September while on vacation. Two friends recommended we try to get here while in Boston. We decided to get in line prior to them opening for the day so we were there at 10:50am. There were four people in front of us. We got there at the right time because there were about 20 people in line behind us within ten minutes. We had a choice of where to be seated since we were close to the for of the line. We decided on a table instead of counter seats. I absolutely loved the interior design of it! I was taking it all in: the tiled walls, large mirrors, tin ceilings, marble table tops...and the list goes on. Service was SPOT on! When we showed up there was a line but since we were the only party of 2, we got to sit right away. The food was amazing, best oysters I have ever had. The Berger was great and the fries have this salt and pepper seasoning. I got a side of the malt vinegar aioli for dipping and if you like malt vinegar it is amazing. We would definitely come back, the only down side is we sat next to a couple who I assume worked there and they were extremely obnoxious and very loud to the point everyone around was staining but they didn't notice or care. The bartender kept talking with them too and eating off their plate which I didn't care about but then they started to complain about customers and it felt weird. Service was spectacular. Food was rich and came out quickly. Chowder is more of the thin stock rather than the thick, but doesn't skimp on flavor. Potatoes were perfectly cooked, just a little firm. Shrimp bisque was just a little spicy and gave the chowder a run for its money. Kids raved about the fish and chips. Oysters were wonderfully briny. Limited seating in a nice intimate setting.
