I went here to order a quick dinner for to go on a Saturday around 6:30pm and there wasn't much of a wait. Since I ordered it for to go, I decided to eat it somewhere else. I ordered the Burrito Bowl (steak) and a Flan for dessert. Both items I got tasted good and I loved how much meat they put in my burrito bowl. The amount of meat and food in that burrito bowl allowed me to build my own taco once I got home to eat it. The flan was good too and it wasn't too sweet. At first, I was afraid the flan would be too sweet when I saw the sauce it was sitting on, but luckily it wasn't too sweet. I'd recommend this place! I ordered a California burrito from DoorDash. I was very disappointed in the quality of the food, specifically the carne asada. I had 3 very big fatty pieces of carne. I had to spit it out. The meat was not cut all the way through so the pieces I spit out were big. I had taken out a good amount of the carne. Everything else about the burrito was really good. I liked the fries in the burrito, the salsa was good and it was a good size. Unfortunately due to the poor quality of the carne asada, I don't think I'll be coming back here. read more

I ordered a chicken burrito bowl the chicken was completely raw and bloody with nasty smell i sadly had a bite into it and my appetite was ruined thinking about how nasty the smell and taste was makes my stomach move again! Ot was very nasty and ruined my dinner. Threw the whole thing away! You should just cook at your home and save your money on these places they don't even know how to cook meat and serves it raw!!! This has quickly become my favorite Taqueria in top half of the Mission. Went here on the reccomendation of my roommate on the fourth of July and have been coming ever since. Out of all the Taqueria's above 19th Street, New Castillitio is one of the only one's open late (11 PM during the week, 2AM on weekends). They are also one of the only Taquerias I've found that does both the mission burrito as well as the California Burrito (burrito with fries) The shop itself is your typical taqueria with plenty of seating, and the staff is super friendly. Every time I've gone I have not been dissapointed. My go to order is a Super Burrito (or California Burrito) with Carnitas. The Carnitas from this shop is perfect every time - a great blend of crispy bits and tender meat. Other meats I've tried (Carne Asada and Al Pastor) have also been solid. Also, the salsa verde and salsa roja they provide is really good. If I'm feeling extra hungry, I go for an order of Carne Asada fries as well... but that's only an every now and then thing. Most recently - this place saved me after a very late night out in Oakland after I made my way back in to the city. I tried my first mission burrito here! Came here for a late lunch and got the super burrito al pastor, carne asada fries, and two chorizo tacos. Everything was on point and so delicious; the fries were FRESH and hot I nearly burnt my tongue. The portions were pretty large, but we came hungry and was able to finish, though I may or may not have staggered out of there overly full. Reading some of the reviews on this page, I wish I had tried the chicken here... but gotta save something for a return trip! read more

World-renowned chef David Chang calls the super burrito here "the best he's ever eaten." FiveThirtyEight's national Burrito Bracket (which, by the way, saw San Francisco's own La Taqueria take home the Title of "America's Best Burrito" for its amazing Dorado-style super burritos) named this "the one that got away." Naturally, being a self-proclaimed burrito aficionado, I had to see for myself whether or not there was any truth to the claims that El Castillito makes the best burrito the city has to offer. Upon entry, you definitely notice the classic no-frills atmosphere characteristic of many spots in the Mission. I ordered the super burrito al pastor, which includes rice, beans, sour cream, sliced avocado, and cheese, along with the marinated pork. First observation: the burrito was large -- heavy, dense, and best of all, forearm-sized. Taste-wise, it was pretty solid as well; the al pastor was very tender and flavorful. What really took away from the experience, however, was that the ratio of the ingredients was completely off (see photo). The burrito was swamped with rice, with only a little bit of meat and beans, and to make matters worse, they were all sequestered in one spot. Same goes for the avocado -- while fresh, every slice was placed in the center, with none spread out anywhere else. It was a disappointment because the flavor was there... but not so much for the execution. Despite the mishap in the assembly, though, I'd definitely be willing to give this place another shot; if put together right, this place is worth your attention for sure. read more

Prawn Super Taco is very substantial ... tortilla, cheese, 8 shrimp, rice, beans, avocado, pico de Gallo, and sour cream. You can make a light meal out of it and it's $6.99! We came into the Mission last week for one thing, and one thing only: an Al Pastor Burrito from El Castillito. Reading an old copy of Bon Appetit, El Castillito was praised as having "the best burrito" ever eaten by the author, Gustavo Arellano (who you should get to know if you haven't) and David Chang (?!). I'd never even heard of this place! As a Bay Area native, I've frequented El Faro, El Farolito, La Taqueria, etc. my entire life, and realized that I've never crowned any specific taqueria with "Best Burrito." As far as burritos go, I'm a simpleton - I came into adulthood eating $2 BCR's (bean, cheese, rice) from Cinco de Mayo in Concord. I reserve judgments for rellenos and enchiladas. Burritos are almost always two thumbs up. Either way, curiosity got the best of me, and we braved the post-apocalyptic hell that is the 16th St. BART station to get to this place. El Castillito is your classic hole in the wall - bright yellow walls, a couple guys running the place that are laid back and casual, insane piles of carnitas and asada being grilled on the flattop in back. Folks wheeling their bikes in and hanging out...the usual. We ordered just one Al Pastor (pork) Super Burrito ($10) - rice, pinto beans, cheese, meat, chunky guac, a bit of sour cream. Just your classic burrito, with free chips (unfortunately not freshly fried) and salsa bar (2 salsas - tomatillo and tomato-based, both pretty mild). Bigger than your average forearm, the size, filling distribution, and overall quality of the burrito is indeed 5 stars. It's a great burrito, and you'd be a fool for passing it up if you're in the area. I hope that's the only convincing you need. General cleanliness, ambiance, and overall vibe leaves a bit to be desired, but the burritos are definitely top notch. Taqueria El Castillito is absolutely in the top 3 for the best burrito in SF (in the same tier as El Farolito and La Taqueria). For me, this spot is better than Pancho Villa and deserves so much more than a measly 3.5 stars. While it boggles my mind that this place hardly gets the recognition it deserves, I enjoy having a no-wait pickup time. I was in and out in a matter of minutes, as opposed to Pancho Villa where I waited in line for my phone order for about 20 minutes. While La Taqueria will forever hold its spot in my heart and stomach as the best burrito joint in town, I go to this spot more often just because of how easy and cheap it is to acquire such a tasty meal. This place is handling the quarantine exceptionally well. When I went in the middle of the day on a Saturday, the place was dead-empty. The workers were notably friendly and the service was lightning fast. We got 2 super burritos and were blown away by how delicious they were. While they weren't as big as a Farolito Super burrito, it fixed my burrito craving and left me with a full stomach. While words can't do this joint justice, just imagine a warm tortilla securing a heavenly mix of juicy asada, flavorful rice and beans, and a salsa melody that sings to your taste buds. That's how I feel every time I have one of their burritos. As there are three castillitos in SF, this one is the castle that stands at top of them all. You probably should listen to David Chang and chase the burrito "that got away" instead of listening to these self-proclaimed "burrito aficionados" giving this place a simple 3-star rating. read more

While I was waiting, I used their VERY CLEAN BATHROOM (just to dispute an old review that said their bathroom was not clean). I happily ate my burrito once I got home after a little reheating. Got here last Wednesday at 7 pm and there were only two guests at this restaurant. My friend and I were really impressed to see how slow it was for a joint located in such a good area. We ate our food very slowly (it took over an hour till we were done) and surprisingly we saw virtually ZERO guests walking in. It's hard to understand how this place will remain open for business. Got two burritos to go from here on Saturday. They were really efficient and made our food fresh and quickly. I got the carne asada super burrito, which was excellent. The carne asada had a nice crisp crunch from refrying on the griddle. Everything was super flavorful, with rice, black beans, guacamole, cheese, and salsa. It was huge. I did finish it, but I wasn't hungry for dinner. My husband had the carnitas regular burrito, which is a little smaller than the super and doesn't have cheese or guacamole.
