I've been coming here for years and the quality always seems to remain consistent. Came after an event in the mission around 8 pm and there was a bit of a line that moved relatively quickly. Ordered a prawn super quesadilla and horchata. First off, some of the best horchata I've ever had. It was the right amount of sweetness to cinnamon ratio. The prawn quesadilla was flavorful and a bit messy. Unlike some other taquerias, La Cumbre gives large prawns which was a nice surprise. The quesadilla itself was pretty big, but I didn't mind taking leftovers home :). Their salsas are spicy! All 3, the green, red and orange all have different flavors, but are each hot. The inside was dirty and some tables weren't clean so I knocked a star, but overall La Cumbre is a solid option. read more

TWO-MEAT COMBINATION BURRITO (ONLY ONE MEAT) I've seen TV shows highlighting Taqueria La Cumbre as the "Birthplace of Mission-style burritos". I ate here for lunch on Cinco de Mayo. Inside Taqueria La Cumbre to commemorate there was a Cinco de Mayo celebration on the wall for customers to take picture. The grilled chicken burrito at Taqueria La Cumbre appears to be the most popular, but I wanted to try something different. On the website it lists one of the items available was combination meat burrito. I asked cashier if that item was available because I didn't see it listed on the menu when I entered this taqueria. The cashier stated yes the combination meat burrito was available. I proceeded to order carne asada and lengua as I thought these two different cuts of beef would provide a different texture. I also ordered the horchata and homemade chips and cilantro lime guacamole. The horchata wasn't too sweet, thick, or watery. There was consistency of the texture that highlighted the cinnamon. Regarding the guacamole I could taste the lime, but not the cilantro. I expected visible slices of cilantro on the guacamole. I came here for the super Mission-style burrito. The burrito was long, but it wasn't heavy inside as I could taste the lengua. Halfway through I couldn't taste the carne asada. I thought the second half of the burrito I would taste the carne asada, which I didn't. Inside this place has charm. There is history as this place created the Mission-style burrito people think of when they see a burrito. The staff treated me well. At the end of the day I paid for an item I didn't receive. Came in for a quick lunch and was hungering for a super burrito. Service was fast and I got my burrito within 5 minutes. I ordered a large steak super burrito with all the standard fillings. While it was made fresh, the ratios inside were quite off. The steak tasted and looked more like chicken, which it probably was. The burrito was overloaded with beans to the point where it felt like I was having a pinto bean fiesta. I didn't taste any cheese inside either. The salsa they hand out was very miniscule, served in the smallest plastic cups. Overall, I was pretty much bummed out by the experience, and the prices felt high for what you get. When I found out that the birthplace allegedly of the modern foil wrapped burrito was in mission district SF there was zero chance I wasn't going. The burritos are big beautiful and delicious lol there's no doubt about that. I am glad I tried it and the place feels like it was well worth the visit. I'm glad I tried it. I absolutely was not able to finish the burrito in one sitting I had to take half back to the hotel lol. Price was good between twelve and fourteen dollars depending on what you want. They have different meats to choose from (I always get chicken) but I'm sure pastor or steak would ha e been delicious too. The power of equality--- Red Hot Chili Peppers harmony in my head I recently went to Taqueria La Cumbre with Marcelo. He is my friend for the past five years and a mentor who hails from Brazil. Marcelo lives near this Taqueria. The Taqueria that invented the Mission Burrito. Wow! Marcelo invited me for a burrito that apparently was named after him. No way. I couldn't believe it. Marcelo like me is a longtime vegan. Apparently the Marcelo burrito here comes with pinto beans, rice, and avacado with green sauce on the side. The Marcelo burrito is by default vegan which is awesome and comes with no chips which makes it more affordable. That's what he said and it is all true aka Satya. I think it was only $8 or so which is super affordable for San Francisco. Name eats for under $10 in San Francisco. Yamo, here, and ______. Fill in the blank. Hit me up for affordable plant strong eats when you get the 411. The only caveat is feedback and critique not to Marcelo yet to who made our burritos for Marcelo's burrito was slightly bigger than mine. I would suggest burritos being the same size yet perhaps since Marcelo has his own burrito named after him and even is on the printed receipt with Marcelo Burrito printed on it since his burrito is in the restaurant's system he should get a bigger burrito! I'll tell you that I wasn't impressed the first time I visited Taqueria La Cumbre for last year's TotMW. Everything seemed rushed, and I couldn't tell why. It seemed weird inside. When I returned for this year's TotMW, I had a totally different feeling. Everything looked, smelled, and tasted the same. But something was different. Had I changed? Probably. It started with the cashier claiming to remember me. From that one visit almost a year prior? I highly doubted it, but he seemed sure, and he had a big smile on his face, so that could only portend burrito goodness for me, right? My burrito was good. Not Pancho Villa good, but good nonetheless. I also really liked the atmosphere this time. Maybe it's because I had come on a hot day the first time, but this second time, it was a cool night. I watched other burrito eaters arrive, order their burritos, and enjoy themselves; and I enjoyed myself even more. I returned another time for a takeout order. The same guy seemed to recognize me, but he didn't say anything about it this time. He was all business, but then this other lady arrived, and he started flirting with her while I was still in the middle of ordering, and then he smiled at me and apologized and told me my order would be right up. They need to fix their sign. Yes, it's an old original, but having a broken sign makes your business look cheap, even if the flashing light in the sign still works. If it were farther south on Valencia, I'd visit it way more often, but if I'm walking all the way up here, I'll just go ahead with Pancho Villa or even El Toro, because they're both better. They are. I was happy to see that they had carnitas on the menu as well as some other options that you normally don't see in this type of Mexican food establishment. The choices of meats and even tortillas plus other options were plentiful which really gave a nice customization to what we were eating. The carnitas were moist and tasted as if it was actually slow cooked versus cooked quickly, like many restaurants do. I honestly kind of expected the burrito to be even bigger than it was as it was a standard size burrito which filled me up. They have three sauces, one of which was a creamy red, then a spicy red and a green avocado salsa. All three were good but the spicy red was by far my favorite. They did have some agua fresca's too as well as beer and bottled Mexican Coke which is the best choice with this kind of meal. If I lived in the area this would probably be a regular place for me. read more

To follow up on what I had said earlier in my Serrano's pizzeria review in that the Mission district is a nice burg with many establishments that are around the corner for you discover an interesting culinary history of the district. Among these places is the burrito places and there are three that are key to understanding about the legends of the "Mission Burrito" or the burrito in general as far as its origin stories. I will not mention the other two for now but know that this establishment, is among the big three in the Mission district. All establishments that have been cited or have claimed to have been the originators of the burrito and there might be some legitimacy to the stories, rumors and claims that are shared between these establishments but there is one thing that all of them that you, dear reader, can be certain of: they make the definitive Classic Mission District Burrito or by a different name: El Burrito Casera (or The Homestyle Burrito). Because all other places in the Mission make burritos, but all of them are no where close among the legendary three of the Mission district that locals hold near and dear to them - and this is one of them (so respect that or else!) Other burrito establishments in the mission district go for a more commercial, fast-casual experience with the decoration (all white walls with either one mural or portrait or typical imagery of 19th century Mexico), La Cumbre screams unapologetically "Chicano!" From the Eddie Van Halen Guitar hanging in the far right back from the entrance, to the Jesús Helguera famous "La Adelita" painting which serves as La Cumbre's mascot; and although some could confuse it for Mexican chauvinism, it is anything but (you can take my word for it); truly a place worthy for Guy Fieri's praises. So! Taqueria La Cumbre: what does it offer? Well two things in fact: the homestyle Mission burrito, one of the legendary ones that are said to be the original home of The Burrito - not just merely the Mission style burrito; and there are possible signs that this is true: with the particular manner of how the steaks are cooked and prepared whereupon it is pre-marinated and slow cooked and ready to serve upon order instead of the more industrial methods of preparation that focus on fast service at industrial speeds. This is also true with regards to the rice, refried beans, guacamole, and pico de gallo salsa (either mild or hot). There isn't a sharp contrast of flavors or textures at all in this taco but instead a savory conjunction that does live up to the reputation of being a homestyle burrito. Not entirely convinced of my initial impressions, I ordered to eat later a different item: a steak quesadilla suiza. The steak quesadilla suiza was similar in its over all taste: it wasn't having sharp, distinct contrast between the ingredients but instead they were working together to make something that didn't stand out but focus on coming together to be comfort food - and most important of all: although it was filling, it didn't overstay its welcome in my palette or in my moment of repose. I may have my doubts about the the claims that La Cumbre may have but, I will not deny that it is truly is an inspiration for the more other, well known and popular burrito establishments throughout the mission district. I encourage anyone to come, give the taqueria your business. Because La Cumbre is one of those few places that can tell you more about the Mission district itself through its food than could any tourist guide. I hope to see you there my friend. read more

Pretty typical food and ambience for this sort of in city burrito restaurant. Interior is worn, but cared for. Restroom is a bit rough. I would avoid. Service was good; you order at counter and pick it a bit later. Food was simple but well seasoned and tasty after a long day of walking around town. The sound of the chef chopping up meat was a consistent added rhythm to music. Prices are fair, especially compared to other more "upscale" restaurants a few blocks away. About 6 tables at interior, which seem to rotate reasonably fast, so there is a place to sit. No outside seating; though with the number of homeless around it is probably a good call. read more

I write this not to complain about the food, or the service or the cleanliness, all of which were fine. I write this to draw attention to the preservation of culture. I try not to write negative reviews, as these are family run businesses who are doing their best to provide for their families in a really challenging space. I also greatly respect the courage of entrepreneurship, so I don't write this lightly. Recipes, passed from generation to generation, help preserve our culture. It is a direct connection to the past that we can actually feel and taste in the present. La Cumbre is something more than a Mexican joint to me. It truly inspired a lifetime of love of Mexican cuisine, and the super burrito in particular. It was the gold standard, by which I judged every subsequent burrito. The following is probably going to sound petty to some - in the end they served an adequate burrito - but it is important to me. Above their front door it proudly states "Birthplace of the Mission style burrito." To profit from this, while ignoring your legacy is sad. Perhaps you need to be reminded of just how great your food used to be: I can't believe I have to say this, but IT IS NOT A MISSION STYLE BURRITO IF IT IS NOT STEAMED. I was served a super burrito with a grilled tortilla, no steam machine in sight. Biting into your super burrito used to be a a melded, saucy, amalgamation of layers of flavor. Now it's just independent ingredients existing on their own within the tortilla, dominated by rice. Your pollo asado used to be, without question, the best on earth with that smokey sauce. What's up with the dry bland chicken breast you served me!? A hot sauce is like a taqueria's identity, its fingerprint/signature. What happened to your red sauce in the squeeze bottle? No more green sauce with the avocado!? What happened to the pickled carrots? What happened to the salsa bar!? What happened to the fresh orange and carrot juice machine!? There were probably good reasons for these changes. I don't expect anything in exchange for these words. Stopped by for lunch. Super dark interior, pretty grungy, but you're obviously not here for a super nice ambience. Service was also fairly slow for there not being that many customers. I got a super burrito with chicken. Definitely solid, but nothing stands out from any other burrito you can get in the Mission. A bit too carb heavy for me; wish there was less rice and more beans/meat. The sauces were also just decent. Green sauce solid per usual, but the orange and red were really strange. Orange tasted like melted cheese, and red was way too sweet. Overall, you pretty much know what you're getting, so come if you want a good solid fast burrito. read more

Taqueria La Cumbre in San Mateo, compared to the other places right down the street, is tasty (and has great drinks) but is like someone crossed a taqueria with a On the Border/Chevy's. It's some place you'd take your midwestern relatives when you want to show them mexican food but like, you don't want to take them to a taqueria or grullense. Like, this is the kind of place that has fajita options. They make me feel vaguely healthier when I put them in my burrito. For claiming to be the home of the mission style burrito, the burrito I got was stupidly difficult to eat, like kept leaking out the bottom. But it was tasty. And they have veggies. Was it the best burrito in the area? Nah. But it felt like a nicer place to meet my friends and their chairs aren't as uncomfortable as Pancho Villas. read more

I remember way back in the day (says every person over a certain age) when we'd go to La Cumbre at ungodly hours & it'd be poppin; not because the food was bomb but because they were one of the taquerias that stayed open late late. Those vague recollections of so-so food must've been accurate because I had drafted a review recently that simply said " nachos - fuck no." Okay, so no nachos. We ordered carne asada tacos during the pandemic & I remember them being quite good, not in the nostalgic way; they were genuinely tasty. Then we ordered them again recently, along with al pastor & roast pork tacos for him & all three meats had no flavor. The shrimp & steak burrito barely contained any shrimp. The rice was flavorful but I don't order a burrito for its rice! The only item we liked from our last order was the chicken super quesadilla made with corn tortilla but that item was a one-off, not a standing order like tacos & burritos. We won't be ordering from La Cumbre anytime soon again since their tacos & burritos have been so disappointing. I remember coming here 10 years ago, after it was featured on Man vs Food, and thought it was just ok. I found myself in the mission after the Warriors game and decided to give it another go. Of course I went with a steak super burrito. What I appreciated was that the pieces of steak were tender and flavorful. They didn't skimp on the meat and they even grill the tortilla which is always a plus in my book. The size of the burrito was bigger than I remembered, and ended up turning it into two meals. I made the mistake of going with refried beans, which in hindsight I should've gone with pinto, I think the flavors would've been better. While it's not my favorite burrito, or one that I would go out of my way for, it still fits the bill when I'm in the area, near Dolores park and looking to get my burrito fix with minimal wait. $12 for a super burrito in the mission is pretty good value, and the wait around 8pm on a Saturday night was non-existent. The chicken super burrito is HUGE but comes apart too easily and becomes really messy to eat. Because the crowd late at night is mostly drunk people, the place doesn't feel clean and there's a ton of trash left behind on the tables. I had no idea that this place was still here! At work we always tell the story about how Carlos Santana worked here when he first moved to the US and how the Mission style burrito (the burrito we all know and love today) was born here. So obviously I had to try this place at like 1:30 am on a Friday lol The burrito was HUGE! I got carne asada at the recommendation of the gentleman I was ordering with. This is a solid burrito. The salsas were my favorite part! I loved all three so much and kept switching between them. The burrito did get a little messy and fall apart at the end but that honestly doesn't bother me too much. Maybe it was just a very bad day for them (ordered around 1pm, maybe the end of a lunch rush?) but it's hard to overstate how far this place has fallen from its former glory as the birthplace of the burrito as we know it ... The one I got today tasted like a burrito-attempt by an elementary school cafeteria. The meat must've been sitting around awhile, the salsas were bland, the chips (an extra charge) were unsalted cardboard out of a bag. There are plenty of burritos to be had in the mission and I recommend you look elsewhere. I am always a little conflicted about leaving a bad review but this was just kind of shocking.
