This is our family's new Chinese restaurant... Although it's been here for a long time and I reviewed it once before we had different dishes this time... We had eggplant, green beans, and tofu that was out of sight! We also enjoyed mapo tofu, salt and pepper, squid and Chinese broccoli with beef... The dishes all looked very similar but the flavor profiles and each dish were very different. It came out fresh. It came out hot and it was all individually delicious! This is still one of our favorite places. We've been coming here for years and the food is always great. We have our favorite menu choices but we still try new things regularly. They offer a huge menu with so many different options there's sure to be something for everyone. The crab puffs and many of the chicken dishes are some of ours favorites. The staff is so friendly and attentive. We always love chatting with Gia. The restaurant is located in the Green House Square so there's plenty of parking available. It's a cozy, casual, dinning area with lots of seating. Theres also a separate bar area with video poker and additional seating. It's great for a casual pop in lunch or even a date night dinner. Totally worth a try for great food, friendly service and to find your favorite dish on the menu. read more

Kind of sad this place doesn't have updated reviews, they are so kind and welcoming. I'm going to be fair with my review due to the simple fact, I like my food spicy and was not aware spice level was an option. Menu could most def be updated on all platforms. I ordered a bacon fried rice and mango refresher, although the fried rice disappointed (due to my own fried rice expertise), I couldn't pass up the BACON opportunity. This is my fave Chinese place around. Their Mongolian beef and kung pow tofu are delightful. Service is always friendly and the portions are a good size. I came here with my mom so hungry trying to find somewhere with fast. Service. We were going to take our food to go, but the ambience was so inviting we stayed and ate. They recently changed their menu.And it is no longer user friendly. Their menu is no longer available for combinations. The restaurant has been cleaned up and painted, but they took out most of the boots and put in dim sum tables for 8. That's not good for just two people. The specials are $20.99 cents now. Instead of having variations of combinations. It's too bad that they change the menu. Because this has been my go to place for Chinese food. For over 10 years, and it's just not good. Anymore. Our go-to Chinese Food restaurant has been Kwang Chow for several years; see my review on this site. But yesterday, following a couple of late appointments in beautiful downtown Clackamas and nearly nothing to eat all day, I asked my wife if she wanted to stop at Wendy's. As we drove into the mall she noticed the New Cathay sequestered in the back corner, and wondered if we shouldn't try that instead. I said I got takeout there years ago that wasn't so great, but time has passed. She just shrugged, and left it to me. I drove past Wendy's toward the mall corner, and as we approached we noticed virtually no customers in the restaurant, not an encouraging sign. But hey, it was Wednesday, not exactly Friday night. The Missus being mobility limited and seeing a handicapped parking spot glaring at us right in front, I succumbed to my adventurous inklings. Upon entering the place, yeah, the restaurant itself (not its adjoining lottery room) was indeed totally void of customers and except for us it stayed that way our entire visit. We sat at the first table and waited. Though someone had been cleaning when we came in, everyone had since disappeared. After 5-7 minutes I got up and nabbed a couple of what seemed to be menus from the checkstand booth and sat back down. Before we could open them a waitress shot in and snatched them, saying they weren't the right ones, and, smiling, handed us the correct ones. After perusing the menus but not seeing combinations we are used to, I suggested we splurge a little more, dollar wise, and order their Family combo for two that proffered multiple dishes covering all our requirements and then some. Egg flower soup, rich and delicious arrived quickly, as did hot tea that probably could've steeped a bit longer but was acceptable. Much to our surprise the waitress reappeared only shortly with a huge platter of appetizers... BBQ pork, egg rolls, fried shrimp, and large flaky fried pastries of a sort, attended with a bowl of creamy-sweet red dipping sauce. Famished even after the last slurps of soup, we dug in to the appetizers and, wow, it was all as great tasting as it looked! Much like Kwang Chow's, the shrimp was actually shrimp and not all batter like we've too often run into at some other places. And the dipping sauce was like sweet and sour and super. But the best of all was the egg rolls, stuffed full with meat and other ingredients, and though well-browned and not the largest, they were absolutely tender and stupendous... the best we've had anywhere. Imagine our amazement when we'd barely sampled the app platter and the main dishes showed up. Okay, yes, we were the only people in the joint, but they were making up big time for the lax beginning. I gotta say I've never seen pork fried rice like this. It was full of veggies and even bean sprouts. I'd never seen a plethora of sprouts in a fried rice before, though I'm sure it's likely not super unusual. The rice was plump, delicate, and delicious in itself. The chicken sub gum was perfectly done. My wife loves it but can be pretty critical. Not of this stuff was she... the almonds were bare of skin, sweet, plentiful, and properly sized. The important part to her was that the celery was cooked to absolute perfection, not overdone nor too crispy, yet still brightly colored. Could one get away with calling celery "succulent "? Then there was another of her favorites, the sweet and sour chicken. Talk about tender! So many times the chicken chunks in other restaurants, or in packaged versions from stores, are too firm and chewy, softened only by the sauce. The sauce in this instance only served to add to this grand culinary experience. With a range from $13 to $19, most of the combos and dishes on New Cathay's menu lay between $16 and $18. Our Family combination was $20 per person. But it's a lot... the waitress came to ask about take home boxes and commented that there was enough for four people in the Family offering we ordered, in unison with what my wife and I had already mentioned between us. Now, I've since read a review or two that weren't particularly flattering of this place, but they weren't that recent. The current owners have been there 6 years, according to the attentive young waitress. While she happily took on the task of loading our take home boxes (not all waitresses do), we engaged her in pleasant conversation and enjoyed her personality as we discussed the place's history , location, and such. That can be an important part of any restaurant's success and character. If it's been awhile or you've never been there, be sure to try New Cathay. The waitress indicated the restaurant isn't in the most visible or ideal spot, almost hidden in that deep corner, and that's contributed to its lack of customers. I'd certainly hate to see it close, after surviving the pandemic and ownership change. Do yourself a favor and try it. Cooks and chefs often change during the week, but try Wednesday evenings. read more

I was on my lunch break and I wanted to try out the New Cathay restaurant because it is right across the street from where I work. I called them to make an order to pick up. I ordered the Szechuan Beef in which their menu read: CHEF'S SPECIAL: Served w/Fried Wonton, Fried Rice and Spring Roll $10.50. I also ordered an egg roll. The only thing I received was a container of a very bland Szechuan Beef, egg roll and white rice (no fortune cookie). To top it all off I was overcharged by a very rude Asian woman. Not happy Then let's go to the Cathy Special fried rice. Should have shrimp, ham, bbq pork bean sprouts and carrot. Well if I was now a HAM lover I would like this. They had 1 shrimp in the entire box. Loads of ham and scarcity of bbq pork loaded with carrots and peas now. Note to New Cathey. Don't cut back on the "goods" in the food. My mother in law ordered from here last night and the food was delivered to her house, her boyfriend and her ate it for dinner around 7:45 pm and by 9 pm they both started feeling sick. My favorite place to get Chinese food - have been twice with family members who live nearby and it is dependably tasty and fresh, with good, quick service and huge portions. Our tragic neighborhood options are either crappy bar/restaurant options, or high-end - nothing in-between. How I wish New Cathay were closer to us! It is a stand-out to me because the vegetables are all nice and crisp/fresh, right down to the egg foo yung, and the meats & seafood also. White-meat chicken in the subgum chicken, OMG. Like... I've been burned by so many Chinese restaurants delivering dark-meat chicken or microwaving rubbery old celery. But New Cathay is quality at a I-can-come-back-here-on-a-regular-basis price. I salute my parents for trying their local strip mall restaurant and introducing me to this gem. We are all fans of the fried shrimp especially. I don't like to leave bad reviews, but when a restaurant is average I usually dont think about leaving a review. However, if there's something to be said whether it's super good or super bad I tend to want to share my experience for those that want to not waste their money, or for those who want to enjoy their grub. So here it is, the service was unremarkable, top notch. The guy was really patient and friendly with great order options. I didn't check out the decor or inside of the place too much, but that is usually not an issue to me if the food is awesome. The first thing I tasted were the crab puffs and they were hot and looked great but completely stale and hard to chew with next to no filling. Sweet and sour sauce, for the hard flavorless fried chicken chunks, had a yellowish color and was unedable by our dog. The egg rolls were just as bad, seems all fried items were not good and I would avoid them. The steamed vegetables and the Mongolian beef were up to par, and if you really had to stop by at this place, those I would recommend. Not many options around this area, but I will look around for other places before I give this location another try. read more

Decided to give this place another chance. Bad move on my part. The food here is much too bland and tasteless. When ordering something as common as sweet and sour chicken one expects that there might actually be some sauce with it. I doesn't make a lot of sense to be cheap with something like that. The rice was dry and tasteless as well. One other complaint we had was that the restaurant was shut down, so dine-in had to take place in the lounge. At one o'clock in the afternoon the music was so loud and obnoxious that you couldn't hear the person across the table from you. I understand louder music at night when everyone is out drinking and having a good time, but at midday it is just too much. The bartender was pretty nice though. Never, ever again. Like, ever. I wanted to like this place..... but the food was just not good. Just not good at all. I had the chicken fried rice and it was extremely greasy. Uneatable greasy. My friend had sweet and sour shrimp. It was about 90% breading and 5% shrimp %5 grease. Here sweet and sour pork was actually okay, but just okay. Not okay enough to warrant another trip here. It would be great if this place could get it together because the staff was friendly, the place was clean (although the décor was older, the place was neat and clean) and there are just not many options in this area of Clackamas. It would be so nice to have a good Chinese restaurant in the area. It's tough giving a place 1 star....... but seriously folks, the food was THAT bad. This place has such a comfortable, inviting environment with a lot of friendly staff. Absolutely fantastic. They continuously visited my table, refilling my water glass and asking how my dishes were. My kids dropped their utensils on the floor several times and without question, the waiters brought more and even offered additional napkins without having to be asked. Service is great. I've been here a couple times already and I've always loved what I ordered, especially since it arrives so quickly and the food is extremely affordable. My kids love the crab puffs and we order it all the time. Not to overpowering, just right. The restaurant itself is just so full of life and my kids love watching the fish in the fish tank. I have to say this is one of my favorite little restaurants and I look forward to eating there more. read more

New Cathay was absolutely the worst Chinese food and service I have ever experienced. I advised I was in a hotel so she gave me a fork and spoon. No napkin, no plate. I had to eat General Tso out of the container. All the broccoli was on top so I couldn't get to the chicken without eating or discarding the broccoli. I'm glad I chose to eat the broccoli because the chicken was awful. Small cup of egg drop soup was tasteless and the most watery I have ever had. My takeout bag was a box that previously held 9"x17" Precision Cleaning Wipes 160ct. The only other customer was a call in that also got a repurposed dumpster box. I had ordered #6 off the lunch menu and it was DISGUSTING. I feel so bad even writing this review as the lady I checked out with was so nice! But the food was a huge huge waste of money. The sweet and sour sauce taste like I would imagine cleaner does it has a weird funk taste to it. The pork chow main was soup and gross and the "fried" rice was white rice..it wasn't even fried rice.It all was very bland with no flavors and what flavors were there were not right. My girlfriend and I stop in a Chinese restaurant to have some lunch. Service was amazing. The new owner Gigi was awesome!

I'm a merchant in the same complex and have given them a 1/2 dozen tries on different menu items but virtually every item has been over cooked and very bland , The pork fried rice is from burnt flavor and no pork to just cooked rice no flavor at all , sesame chicken is so over done you can hardly bite it because its just breading deep fried. The new owners are great people but they really need to up there game in the food category . I wish them well read more
