I recently tried this place and it was just OK. The egg rolls are very small, the dumplings were very thick and had very little meat inside. I had the sesame chicken combo, the chicken was ok, the fried rice was yellow, I personally prefer darker fried rice. I was pleased to see that they delivered, but was unaware of a delivery fee, I believe it was $1.50. It was a rainy night so I gave the driver a $5.00 tip, add in their $1.50 fee and that's a $6.50 tip....a bit excessive for a mile drive read more

Got takeout today. big mistake!!! First thing I noticed when I arrived at home was that they forgot my soup in the stapled shut paper bag. The shrimp and broccoli lunch special was mediocre, but it was light years better than the boneless spareribs. I'm old and I've eaten a lot of Americanized Chinese food, and I enjoy it when it's done right. We love all the other food at this restaurant, but the wonton soup is so watered down & tasteless, that we stopped ordering from them. We recommended them to several friends before trying the soup and they all came back remarking how awful the soup was, so they won't give it another try. Won ton soup had plenty of won ton dumplings, but each held only a scant half teaspoon of (not very seasoned) meat. The broth was colorless and tasteless. No scallions, no slices of pork. Vegetable fried rice had almost entirely frozen vegetables, no egg, no flavor. I've had better out of a box. Chicken with broccoli was just okay. Been ordering from this place for many years because they deliver. Tonight's spare ribs order was all burnt. When we complained we were given a hard time and were told in order to get a credit we had to return the ribs. We ate an unenjoyable dinner of burnt ribs. They really pissed me off. We got New China House for lunch today at my job. I got General Tsos Chicken. First of all, what's up with the sauce? It's really red and sticky like sweet and sour sauce made with molasses, semen, Welch's jelly, and water. And second of all, I use the term "chicken" very loosely. I don't know what kinda animal they fed me today, but that was not chicken. See included photos and judge for yourself. Really shocked that this place isn't rated higher. I just tried it for my first time and the food is excellent. I ordered boneless spare ribs and they're honestly the best I ever had. Hardly any fat on them. They're also the only chinese in the area that sells chicken on the stick. Hands down the best Chinese in the Jamesburg/monroe area. Don't believe these 1 star reviews. Next shopping center down from China Taste (in the Wawa center) Nice family run place for take out or delivery - low prices, decent food, better taste then China taste and they will custom make stuff like singapore chow fun rather then chow mai fun or will make special fried rice combos or extra spicy ma po tofu. China House and Ming Feng are both in Monroe Township, in shopping plazas right next to each other. They are both right by my parents' house, so I always end up going to both at least once when visiting home. I think China House is better overall. Since the two are so close to each other and offer an almost-identical menu, I thought I'd compare and contrast them in this one review. There are three things you need to know about how I judge a Chinese-American style Chinese restaurant. One, I have a very different set of standards and tastes when it comes to Chinese-American versus authentic Chinese food (and it breaks down further into regional type of cuisine from there). Second, when at a Chinese-American style Chinese restaurant, I always get the same two things first as my litmus test: fried pork dumplings and beef with broccoli. The third thing you need to know is that I will be comparing it to the Chinese-American takeout of my childhood, First Wok in New City, NY. But not First Wok as it is today. I will be comparing it to the flavor of First Wok food back in the day. Like China House, First Wok is a family-run business. They have been around for decades, and I guess as people have retired/died, the chef-ing reins have been passed down, which probably accounts for the taste of the place slowly changing over the years. First Wok is still my favorite and I will drive the 90 minutes to get my take-out on, but its heyday is the no-longer-attainable ideal to which all Chinese take-out will be unfairly compared. Oh, I guess you need to know one more thing. Chinese take-out in L.A. tastes totally different to me, so I am constantly on the search for real New York-style Chinese-American food, which to me are typified by thick dumpling skins and smooth-textured pieces of meat, be it pork, beef, chicken, etc., and oily, not-sweet sauce (LA puts far too much sugar in nearly everything as far as I'm concerned). So far, my search for thick-skinned dumplings has not been as fruitful as my search for real New York-style pizza or bagels. ...No, I have not met a carb I did not like, why do you ask? ;) No pan-fried dumpling in L.A. or its environs compares to the thick-skinned dumpling of my youth, although a few have come close (and all but one, J & J on Valley Blvd in Alhambra, have subsequently closed as of this posting). And so the search continues, but meanwhile when on the east coast I enjoy a glut of thick dumplings to taste and scrutinize, jeweler's loupe poised at the ready. ---- With the backstory in place, on with my review: China House's beef with broccoli's flavor and the smooth texture of the meat is closer to First Wok than even First Wok is anymore. Their fried dumplings' insides are juicy and delicious, but blander than First Wok or Ming Feng, but their NY-style skins, which are my raison d'etre, are thicker and closer to the First Wok of my childhood than First Wok currently does them. Ming Feng's beef with broccoli is too sweet, and the texture of the meat is not as smooth as China House or First Wok. The fried dumplings' insides are more flavorful and delicious than China House and closer to First Wok, but their skins are too thin and not chewy enough (but still knock the socks off any West Coast dumpling skin). China House is predominantly take-out. Although there are a couple small tables, be forewarned that children, who are mostly well-behaved, nevertheless often take up those tables themselves and can sometimes be loud or underfoot. Ming Feng is the better choice if you want to sit down and have your meal, but for me the food at China House wins out. China House's proprietor is nice enough, though he may come across as gruff in his efficiency. I suspect he's one of those prickly-on-the-outside, soft-on-the-inside kind of men. When we were both coming into the store at the same time, he ran to open and hold the door for me. Ming Feng's proprietor speaks slightly better (or maybe just more) English and is way friendlier to my parents, who speak fluent Chinese, than to me, an ABC with a less-than-ideal grasp of the language. Finally, China House is way cheaper than Ming Feng, which, as Ming Feng is a full-service sit-down restaurant in addition to doing take-out, is unsurprising. read more

Despite the weather delivery was quick. First time trying this place and last. Very greasy and glurpy. Ordered wonton egg drop and it was so gelled it was inedible. Son had general tso chicken said it was okay. The lo mein was over soy sauced and garlicky. The egg rolls were chewy and greasy not crispy at all. Next time just won't order from them again. This is the Chinese restaurant in the plaza with the small food store, liquor store, and closer to the turnpike. (There's another Chinese restaurant in the adjoining plaza.) They make the hot and sour soup to order so you can get it without mushrooms. (weeeeee) They really are open late, as compared to Golden Garden which has mistakes on the website. I ordered the chicken and broccoli lunch special mostly because it's common, simple, and you can't go wrong with a Chinese food basic like chicken n broc, right? WRONG! I tried this place after receiving a coupon through Val-Pak. I ordered a pair of Egg Rolls (which enable me to get the rating up to 1 star), I had Egg Drop Won Ton Soup which was absolutely awful, I ordered Shrimp & Lobster Sauce, which was worse than the soup ... I saw zero pieces of lobster (usually brown ground pieces) in the sauce and the sauce was perhaps thinner than the tea I was drinking with it ... I ate the shrimp and dumped the rest, I also ordered General Tso's Chicken, but will not eat that until tomorrow. The coupon was for a free order of Roast Pork Fried Rice ... which I'll give a scant OK to. I ordered Delivery from this place. Good job taking the order and even a better job in botching it up. It took them almost an hour and a half to deliver. We called three times and were told the driver went to the wrong address. Upon the drivers arrival we asked him if he got lost and he said that he knows our place well and has delivered from their Japanese restaurant several times to us. The order we placed and the one we received were two different ones. When we called the lady by the name of Cici to complain she started to argue with us. She was extremely rude and I asked to speak with the owner and he wasn't available, she took my number to have him call me back and I haven't heard from him. I'm not a mean spirited person. Or very picky when it comes to food. I'm pretty easy. But I just had some pretty bad food from China House. Just to cut to the chase, what I didn't like was this: --The chicken in the Chicken Fried Rice was a really rubbery extruded long rectangle that a fingernail wouldn't dent in the slightest. I've never seen anything like it. I tried eating it (to be fair) and it was no good. It was just plain weird. --The Teriyaki Chicken Sticks were better quality chicken but salty to a high degree. I actually finished them because I don't like wasting food/money. --The Chicken and Broccoli had that same rubbery-ish quality (about 50% of it) that the chicken in the fried rice had. So, that's it. If you are ok with rubbery chicken, don't mind me none! Could it have been a bad day? The chef was sick and a newbie filled in? I don't know but I'm not going to stick around to find out. In fairness, all Chinese restaurants have their good and bad days. But the general trend here is the 1-star, I can see. I have ordered from them for over a year, mainly b/c they deliver. Food is not great, but was tolerable, until tonight, when I ordered a main dish and a large (quart) separate order of pork fried rice. Emphasized to girl taking order that I wanted it LIGHT OIL. I know it's fried rice, maybe an oxymoron to ask for light, but 1 tsp vs 4 tbsps?? Repeated it twice. Her English was very spotty, but at least she's bilingual (I think), I give her credit for that. When order arrived, main dish was ok, rice was soaking in oil so I called to say I would bring it back tonight or tomorrow am. Didn't ask for a new delivery (and BTW I do tip generously for delivery, in cash). I was told no, can't return, no correction offered for THEIR mistake. Asked to speak to manager; got a woman who AGAIN said NO, you can't return it, we don't add ANY oil. Yeah, right...Ironically, as I went to spoon it into a small garbage container on my counter I discovered that the pork pieces were basically all on top. Not many after that. So for what it's worth, I would not recommend them....food not good, customer service LOUSY!!!! There is another place on Cranbury Road that delivers to Rossmoor, I will use them from now on and their food is MUCH better anyway, truly But they don't have moo shu, which is why I went with China House.
