Met a friend for lunch, and their lunch specials are great choices. I had the hot and sur soup to start. It was hot in temperature and a nice bit of heat in flavor. My main was the spicy shrimp and peanuts. This was a dish piled high with - you guessed it - shrimp and peanuts! The "spicy" was from the several red chili peppers scattered on top. I like spicy, but I can't actually eat the peppers straight! There were some chili flakes in the sauce but not many, so in the end I didn't find the dish very spicy. However, it was very tasty and very very filling (I managed to finish it!). Couldn't beat it for $14.50 plus tax and tip. read more

Best Chinese food in NYC I had hands down. Along with best service. Food was delicious, also if the servers recommend something, do try it out. I went twice in my 5 day trip to NYC. I tried sautéed green beans (delicious!!!) sautéed asparagus with carrots, bean curd family style, schzewan style tofu, veggie dumplings in spicy peanut sauce and snap pea leaves (now this dish is a must try, it's simple and yet delicious or I just love my greens more than anything). Lunch special comes with wonton soup which was again delicious. My husband tried their king pao chicken which he said was good. Can't speak on the physical location, because we ordered delivery. But the food was Delicious!! We ordered pork dumplings, orange chicken, dumplings in peanut sauce, moo shu pork, Szechuan style prawns, and Chung king spicy chicken, with white rice. When I tell you that everything was delicious, I mean it! Outstanding! I will say that if I had to add a negative, it would be that they forgot to send the wrappers with it. Which they did send over. However, there were literally only 2 included. (Not nearly enough for a full order of moo shu). My good friend Jasmine introduced me to New Cottage and told me it was her favorite Chinese Restaurant. I know that she has always given really good recommendations and I trust her judgment so I went with her for lunch. Ever since then, I went with her whenever we were both available and in the mood. Most recently, I came with all of my girlfriends and we ordered a lot of food for the table to share. They were really great about one of my friends bringing her service dog into the restaurant and I know that can be hard sometimes. The food was really good and I enjoyed my meal. They know my friend at the restaurant because she's a frequent customer and she always goes with her mom. This was my first time at a Chinese restaurant on the upper west side. New Cottage is a tiny level up from your usual Chinese take out restaurant. It wasn't bad and it wasn't really good either. The eggplant with garlic sauce was literally just eggplant, no scallions or tasty garnish..just plain ole eggplant and garlic sauce that didn't have that garlic taste. The spicy diced chicken wasn't spicy, it was rather just very salty as if the chicken was soaked in salt overnight! It's okay but I wouldn't go back. Very simple, basic meals. It was busy for a Thursday lunch period. It's mediocre Chinese food with tables, a wait staff and tables with white tablecloth pleasing for the upper west side I suppose. read more

This place may not be run by a world-famous chef or boast Michelin stars, but it has something far more rare--soul, respect, and genuine care. We sat down for lunch and placed our order, but soon realized that if we waited for the food, we would miss an appointment. When we asked the waiter if we could come back in a few hours to pick it up, she happily agreed. Later in the afternoon when we returned, not only did they heat up our food, but they even prepared a fresh entrée and treated us with the kind of warmth and generosity you'd expect from family. For a moment, it truly felt like home. I wish more restaurants showed this same love, compassion, and care. The food here is exceptional. Since we're not big meat eaters, we mostly tried the vegetarian entrées, and they were all excellent. I'm coming out of review retirement just to give a shout-out to this restaurant. I've lived in this neighborhood since long before this restaurant, and way-back-when there were so many competing Chinese restaurants, with a few of the great ones come & gone. So, compared with 100's of lunch take-outs (in the UWS and around the city) over years, plus eating-in and take-out in this neighborhood... Trying this place for the 1st time, surprisingly, and equal surprisingly, very impressed. I got some basic lifelong favorites, like BBQ ribs and General Tso chicken, plus an appetizer of pork dumplings in spicy peanut sauce, as my first sampler, Basics, though I see some more exotic specialties too. The General Tso's was spot-on, hot, tasty, slight zing, couldn't ask for more. Same with the ribs, the classic taste I've loved since childhood. Ditto, the dumplings and divine, perfect peanut/sesame sauce. That's all I can say I've tried here so far, but "I'll be back".... As an aside, this was delivered/take-out, and it came (a few blocks away) quickly, hot, and with the chopsticks and brown rice I'd requested, plus a few small condiment sides. "Approximately perfect." Only down side: prices up since the last take-out menu (significantly), but then that's everywhere, in New York, Florida too, grocery store too. But "you get what you pay for", and this was worth it, for a treat. read more

Lots of light and air set the scene for expectation of a good meal, but it was unexpected to also find ourselves next to people who had left the area decades before but always returned when in NYC and took food home to savor, The food was fresh and excellent. New Cottage is much better than it has any right to be. It's a humble establishment, but they put out really incredible food. They just get all the little things so right in ways you wouldn't expect from a Chinese restaurant in the upper west side, especially at a reasonable price point. It's hard to go wrong with the appetizers. The peanut sauce dumplings are spectacular (keep the sauce to soak up with your rice later). If you like to start with soup, a cup of the corn and egg drop soup is always welcome. We always order it and frequently pick it up to-go on chilly evenings. Feel like ordering a sauteed vegetable, like bok choi? They might tell you that the snow pea leaves are particularly good that day, and to get that instead. They'll be right - whatever they recommend will be particularly fresh and clear-flavored, with a burst of garlic to go with the bright flavor of the vegetable. Dishes out of the wok are generally terrific (like the beef with long peppers or scallion), with real wok char flavor while avoiding excessive grease. They also do things well beyond the classic dishes, like the cumin fish filet: powerfully spicy and cracklingly crisp, with a cumin taste that fills your mouth with a pleasurable burn. We've ventured around the menu a fair bit and found very few things we wouldn't repeat. On top of the food and the helpful, friendly service, the ambience is awesome. It really feels like a linchpin of the neighborhood dining scene. It's full a lot, but never seems uncomfortably loud or crowded. It's warm and welcoming, the kind of place that you could easily see yourself becoming a local at. If you're looking for excellent, unpretentious Chinese food, brought out quickly in a great environment, look no further. It's popular for a reason. read more
