Perfect place to get ramen on a cold day. The staff was nice and friendly. Venue is cozy but clean and beautifully decorated. We got the marbled pork rin ramen and tonkotsu chashy pork ramen. We got the jpop lychee drink as well. Jpop Lychee Drink- This was sweet and refreshing. The lychee flavor is strong and really pushes through. Marbled Pork Ramen- Pork is tenderand practically melts at the mouth. Broth is served hot with a deep savory flavor. They load the dish up with spiced egg, scallions, corn, kale, bean sprouts, radish and edamame. Tonkotsu Chashu Pork Ramen- Chashu is tender with a good amount of fat. Some of the best ramen I can remember having in a very long time. You can walk by this spot many times and miss it! (My friends and I did!) We sat by the door, which sometimes gave us a waft of cold air, but the warmth (and deliciousness) of our food kept us happy. The space is pretty minimal, but I think that's a-ok. There is still some ambiance and a delightful smell throughout the restaurant. I loved my Tonkatsu ramen - some of the best I have had in a long time. The noodles are perfect. We visited Peng's Noodle Folk after the Frick Collection because it was nearby and reasonably priced, and we were so glad we did. Everything we ordered was excellent and the portions were generous, plenty for sharing. The chicken dumplings with bok choy were juicy and flavorful. The poached shrimp were simple but plump and fresh, served with a delicious dipping sauce. The chicken katsu ramen was great. They serve the katsu on the side so it stays crispy, and the broth was really tasty, mild and delicate without being overly salty, which I often find with ramen. It was well balanced. We also ordered two wok-fried noodle dishes (homemade noodles- yum!), one chicken and one vegetarian. Both were very good. We asked for the chicken dish to be mild, but it was mouth-on-fire spicy, even for us, and we're used to spicy food. Still, they were really good but if you have a low spice tolerance this will be inedible. My stepdad had the vegetarian noodles extra spicy and really enjoyed them. The only issue was when we asked for the ramen to be split into two bowls for our kids. They wouldn't do it in the kitchen and just brought us extra bowls to split it ourselves. It was messy and a bit frustrating, definitely not ideal when dealing with long noodles and young kids. It would have been a small but appreciated gesture for them to take care of that for us. Service was friendly and efficient. The iced teas were also very tasty. Even with the bowl-division inconvenience, I'm giving them five stars because the food was that good. I have a weird gut issue and can't do a lot of veggies, so I got mine with just the sauce and chicken, no lettuce, and it was still fantastic! Also super affordable - the sandwich was only about $10. Wow. We stumbled upon this small place after seeing a show nearby and so glad we did! Fast service and friendly staff. I loved that they served the chicken on the side of the soup so we could take our time eating it and it didn't get soggy. The purple dumplings were so pretty (& good). Absolutely delicious! This was a great find for us while on vacation for Christmas in the city. We were walking around Upper East Side taking photos of decorated homes & hotels in the frigid temps, when we had the urge for hot soup. I checked Yelp and came across Peng's. It was by far our fav meal of the entire trip. Leaving Midtown to try food in other neighborhoods really makes a difference. The service was perfect. The food was flavorful and abundant. Peng's is the only spot in the area where you're going to get a decent bowl of soup noodles. Despite having no competition in the area, Peng's does a great job with consistency and making great dishes. My personal favorites are the ramens but they also make great cold noodles (ban mian). They are quick with their orders too. Highly recommend especially if you're looking for soup noodles in the area. This is our go to spot for noodles in the UES! read more

However, some of the dishes are not spectacular (& my general reviews in the past never really constitute high expectations.) The donburi's are not really what it is, in terms of that label. It came out to be an ordinary main dish over rice with scallions and some general mixed veggies. I would not characterize it as a donburi but for marketing purposes (and hoping customers like me would not call it out), it is depicted as such, on their menu. Which is fine because the reviews have been mostly raving in terms of taste. At the end of the day, as long as customers are happy - then be it. For now, my purpose is to clarify so that future customers would be made aware, that's all. The neighborhood is fortunate for a restaurant that provides different options. For me, just may not go back. But I would still wish the establishment continued success and best of luck - while attempting to work on needed improvements. read more

Came here for lunch with a friend about a month ago, after we'd been to the Frick (fabulous, but I'll review them separately). Loved this place! Not your typical noodle joint, much more upscale, much more interesting dishes. I had the Beijing-style dalumen -- super delicious (but maybe a bit salty for those who don't love salt as much as I do). Very nice atmosphere (not noisy) and very pleasant staff. Wait staff friendly and willing to offer suggestions for my first visit, openly advising that some items were an additional charge. The broth was delicious and mild. A subtle flavor. The eggs were exquisite with a lovely aftertaste that blended perfectly with the broth. I was less sold on the panko-crusted chicken. The breadcrumbs were yummy in the broth but I wondered about the chicken. Few white meat pieces and more dark or pressed chicken pieces. We ordered Da Lu Noodles, Tingling Shaobing, and fried tofu. All were delicious with In depth flavors. The fried tofu is a style we never had before, so is the Da Lu Noodles. The noodles here are the absolute best! It's not a large space but doesn't feel crowded or noisy. The tables are mostly four tops with only one large table that I noticed (I think it seats 8?) so if you have a larger party, you might want to call ahead. I recommend the shrimp fried noodles or the chicken katsu ramen, both dishes are phenomenal. This past April, I vacationed in Vancouver for a couple of days. While there, I tried some terrific Asian cuisine, among them a terrific noodle shop that produced fresh noodles at a great portion size and a great price. I feared I would never have that experience in the States, let alone New York City. Thankfully, those fears are allayed, largely thanks to this small gem on the Upper East Side. Do not be fooled or turned off by the relatively high prices. The portions back it up. Everything also tasted fresh and had full flavor. They even offer chili oil and chili powder at the table so you can liberally make your dish more spicy if you so desire. Once this was pointed out, I clearly noticed a difference in quality, for the better. Want more noodles? Of course you can! I enjoyed these so much I demanded a second helping. How can you not slurp these and not enjoy? I could probably even do a third round of these and still enjoy it! Okay, maybe not three, but two is good. If it were not for the fact I had a long subway ride home, I would have slurped up the remaining broth, but me having some decency, restrained. Now I understand why this such a well kept secret. Great noodles, great service, great location (short walk from 77th street on the 6 train), overall great job. I love seeking guidance at new restaurants, and it's always a delight when servers confidently offer suggestions, even when they're wildly different. Pan Fried Pork Dumplings: as delicious as they are beautiful. Fresh, light, and the presentation was on point. The Hot Tingly Beef: Not spicy enough for me (high tolerance), but that was easily fixed with the condiments at the table--Togarashi, Soy Sauce, and Chili Oil. Even without the extra heat, the beef was seasoned to perfection; so it probably appeal to those who like meat flavored, but not too hot. The beverage selection is excellent. Highly recommend the Funaguchi Kikusui Nama Sake. It was exactly as described by my server. Nuff said. Topped it off with Mochi ice cream: two flavors--vanilla and strawberry. Absolutely delicious. Fantastic Asian noodles a few blocks off the park on the upper east side. The inside had a cozy, dark, steampunk decor with hints of Asian inspiration with the color pattern and wood elements. The noodles were fantastic. We got the spicy tingly minced beef noodles (Banmen, with no broth) and the tan tan men (minced pork) ramen. The tingly noodles were my preference and were amazing. They had the tingly spicy flavor of Szechuan peppercorns over the raw heat of normal peppers and were just spectacularly balanced in flavors. The ramen was also fantastic and lives up to the hype of good Asian food in New York with a spicy, salty, rich broth. Even my daughter loved having the broth over rice. My son got the chicken katsu (basically just chicken tenders) and loved it so the whole family was able to eat while we got our NYC Asian noodle fix. read more

This place is certainly popular - we had to queue up for a while. A Chinese restaurant focused on noodles is already more authentic than average, but there is still a noticeable bend towards the local taste buds. We were a party of 5 (4 vegetarians), and most of their tables only seat 4, but the waitress managed to put an extra chair at one end so we all squeezed in. Since it was a cold night, the vegetarians ordered the only vegetarian soup noodle on the menu, while the lone carnivore ordered Dan Dan noodles (extra charge to add a soft boiled egg). According to the review of the meat eater, the Dan Dan noodles were quite good, although not spicy at all, despite a 3 chili sign on the menu. The traditional dry roasted soybeans were substituted with boiled Edamame, and a few things that generally don't belong to a bowl of Chinese noodles appeared as well, such as cherry tomatoes and kale. We figured this is to please those less familiar with the authentic cuisine. The noodles were all freshly made, which is a super plus. If we weren't in a hurry (intermission during a Gamelan concert at the nearby Indonesian Consulate), we would hesitate to pay over $20 for a bowl of noodles of compromised taste.
