The consensus for both is four stars -- based on takeout, that is -- each with differences that would steer me to one over another, depending upon my order. Asian 83 has an extensive menu, more so than the other place. Their hot and sour soup is the right level of spice and pretty good, though not as rich as would be my preference. Last minute, I added an eggroll. I generally like a lot of cabbage. This has a lot of pork. I thought it was delicious! Under the best of circumstances chow mein is mild, almost nondescript. It surprises even ME that I like it! Asian 83's version is okay. Not the best, not the worst. My other place doesn't even sell it. For what it's worth, you can save a bit of money at Asian 83. Good, classic, cheap Chinese place on the upper East side. Good combo meals with a lot of food. I've ordered from here 4-5 times now and it is my go to in a pinch. Food is ready in 15 minutes. The staff is very friendly and is just ripping out orders left and right. Note this is only a takeout place. I made same request at other restaurants and they will say yes and forgot. On a lazy hungry afternoon, me and my boyfriend decided to order from this Chinese restaurant because it was one of the closet one to us for pickup and we wanted to try new Chinese restaurant! Also, I want to mention that the prices here are amazing especially in this neighborhood. We ordered through UberEats and the extensive menu options appealed to us (they even had noodle soups with your choice of protein) We ordered the Sesame Chicken Combo with fried rice and the Singapore Chow Mei Fun. As soon as we got the notification that the order was ready, we went to pick it up - but it was not readwe still have to wait for the food to be finish cooking. The food was packaged with no utensils - not even a piece of napkin but it was sealed neatly in a brown paper bag. My noodles was not warm - I had to even heat it up in the microwave for about a minute. The Singapore Chow Mei Fun was pretty disappointing because it didn't have as much flavor as it should and there wasn't much chicken in the noodles - Also, there was like just one piece of fried egg in there. There was a decent amount of shrimp in there, but I wasn't sure how fresh they tasted. However I did like that it wasn't too oily and the portion size was decent. The Sesame chicken Combo was pretty decent as well, but nothing out of the ordinary. This review is based on a single dish, the "mapo tofu". * The mapo tofu was not mapo tofu. I think they used duck sauce as a base, because it was actually sweet and instead of salty/spicy. No sichuan or numbing taste/flavor. I specifically asked for extra spicy... * The color of the dish was also completely off. Looked like syrup was poured over tofu. Brown soupy base. More watery than oily. * They also didn't even use the right tofu. Its supposed to be silky tofu, but they used firm tofu. FIRM. WTFFFF..... * The "peppers" they put in were dead and barely had any taste let alone any spicy kick. Clearly a garnish or super old peppercorn thats past its shelf-life. * Also they have the mapo under pork section, but there was no meat in the dish. Instead, it they put in canned peas and carrots. Don't bother ordering authentic, because this place clearly caters to the american palate, and probably specializes in serving american chinese food. Asian 83 is fantastic. You know it because of a few things: You walk into the restaurant and you see that the cashier and cooks are both wearing two layers of jackets and a beanie. This is because it's cold in the restaurant to reduce costs of heating. This savings is passed onto you, and it's apparent as you glance through the menu. Lunch specials that come with an egg roll or soup, a heap of rice, and a full entree cost only $6.75. Then as you order your standard Chinese food, you look at the little space heater off to the side of the restaurant plugged into an outlet. You look closer at the heater and you see that it's set to a toasty 41F. You wonder if it was supposed to be celsius. You sit down at the seats and realize the two tables in the restaurant are actually meant to be temporary places to wait for the food rather than to eat your meal. You decide to take the food home. As you grab your food, even having not indicated you'd like to take out, the food is wrapped in a plastic bag and a paper bag stapled together - identical to any order that's ready to go out for delivery. You prepare to leave the restaurant, and you spot the B health rating stuck to the window as you turn to exit. Asian 83 is kind of a glorified Chinese family's kitchen. That's exactly what I want. It is always good to have a neighborhood crap Chinese food place. This is that place.
