Apparently this NEC location is closing today 3/21/24. I worked here in the 1990s. Great place to work when I was in my 20s... back then the shop was super busy most days. New England Comics only has 4 locations left now. Quincy & Norwood stores might be the next closest ones if you're in Boston & have a car. Awww yeah... I found a comic book store in another city. I found my 2nd Doctor 50th Anniversary Doctor Who comic :) yeahhhhh! They have a basement full of sale items too. I found a gift for my friend - Iron Man Extremis collection - for 80% off... Whaaaaaaaa??? Yes. Bought. Note: Iron Man 3 is based on the Extremis series! It's a small store but they contain a good amount. They have a lot of independent comics too - local too. Pretty nice. Service: nice. I didn't really need hlp. My boyfriend can't help but visit a comic book shop when he walks by one, even when he's on vacation and he's just picked up his weeklies from the comic book shop at home. I'm not much better, so into New England Comics we went! The shop was small, the staff was friendly, and I found a trade I had been looking for! This NEC location is incredible. They have a basement full of back issues and get a solid amount of new releases. The manager there, Brian, is super knowledgeable, friendly and helpful. I had stopped collecting comics for 25 years and stopped into this location 4 years ago. 14,000 comics later I am hooked. read more

This place is tiny - but it looks like everything is around here. What they lack in size they make up for in selection. While browsing the shelves of trade paperbacks, manga, and standard comic books, I was really impressed! Lots of little illustrations are scattered around, too. It was a nice touch. Also, if you're into anime figures, they've got a tiny selection here but what you find is awesome. I found several fairly rare figures at much more reasonable prices than even my favorite online stores. What impressed me the most was the staff though. They let me set up a layaway for a figure I wanted to purchase, and were very knowledgeable about the products. Tiny, but truly great. :3 read more

They manage to pack a whole bunch of fun into this little joint, and I love them for it. My comics taste has drifted away from the monthlies and towards the trades in my old age, but I've rarely not found what I've been looking for when I've gone in. They don't have everything, but I've yet to find a shop that does. The staff is friendly and helpful, even when I'm just poking around and killing a bit of time by thumbing through a few books. They even have some obscure indie/local stuff, which is always cool. A bright spot in our neighborhood, for sure. Support your local comic book shop. read more

Although not my favorite comic store in Boston, NE Comics is still a fantastic store when you need your fix. They have so many locations, but they're all pretty much the same - a bit small, but odds are they will have what you need. (Except for the time a friend was hunting for the latest Adventure Time, and they didn't have it...) The staff is probably my favorite part of NE Comics. They know their stuff, and they're very very helpful! read more

This was the second New England Comics that I visited on Saturday. (Yes, my boyfriend and I are crazy and he's a huge comic book fan). I didn't like it as much as the store in Allston. I felt like the selection was smaller, and the general vibe of the store was far less engaging than in the other location. I don't think the man working the register even greeted us when we entered. The selection is really good. They had some cool t-shirts, and lots and lots of indy and harder to find titles. The prices were good, although this location did not appear to be having a sale like the Allston location (which is odd since they're obviously a chain). It was one of the nicer stores in terms of prices and available titles, plus had some cooler smaller items. We were both impressed, and would definitely return. I'd give it a look, you may find a gem that you've been searching for! read more

This place fulfills all my nerdy dreams: the selection of comic books/collections, graphic novels, and manga are great (and if this particular location doesn't have what you're looking for, one of the other nearby locations will), and the staff are knowledgeable and really willing to get into what is worth checking out, and what isn't, from publishing companies to writers to artists. Between this location and the others, I find this one my favorite; it's a bit more quirky than the others. Plus it's easy on the wallet. How much better could it get? read more

Found the workers rather rude when I walked in there close to close (mind you it was 6:50 and they close at 7pm which I think is already weird to begin with) just to look around for a second. I was planning on buying something when they accosted me saying that they were going to close "in one minute" in a dry satire attitude. Needless to say I didn't buy what I was planning on and I won't be back. read more

The store is a bit on the tiny side but, man, they make it work. What's particularly amazing, at least from my point-of-view, is that they still manage to make the store wheelchair accessible. It's like they've pulled some amazing non-Eucladian organization! Anywho, the staff is always friendly, which is a huge plus. The comic selection is great when it comes to mainstream things, and quite respectable when it comes to your indy and local materials. Their action figure section is a bit sparse at times, but then they have sudden bursts of activity. You'll go weeks looking at the same few things and then BAM you're up to your ears in stuff that you really wish had been spaced out a bit! All in all it's my favorite comic store. The location is good, the staff is great, the selection is fine, and they're handicap accessible. read more

The dollar comics in the basement can be fun especially during sales, if you don't mind dust and can avoid the gaming crowd (noise, smell). But the staff has been rude on more than one occasion. In 2016, a young female clerk was terrible (maybe the same one from another review). I was there again last week, and apparently the males are no better. I phoned ahead and was told that the dollar comics were 50 cents apiece if you buy more than 10. When I came in it was a different clerk, who claimed not to know about the sale and told me that I misheard the clerk who was talking about their upstairs stock, which was 40% off (?!). I'm an out of state customer and have made an effort to visit while in Brookline, but I'm kind of over it at this point. read more

The store is very small. The collection is okay. But wow, whoever was working when I went in was R U D E. I asked her if they carried a specific series and she looked at me like I was an idiot and answered me with the most condescending tone. If the employee had been nice and informative it would have made a big difference for me. I probably will not be going back because I never want to interact with that woman again if I don't have to. read more

They have a pretty awesome shop. The basement is filled with a ton of back issues that aren't the best, but they're so much fun to go through. It's hard to not look at every single box. Main shop is a little small, bit they're up to date and have excellent sales. I always go when I'm in Brookline, but it is one of the less popular New England Comics around Boston. I notice people are fond of the employees, but I'm uncomfortable with one of the employees as they say terrible things with the more experienced collectors. Several times I have been in the store when they have said very rude things about "newbies." Great selection and awesome staff. Unfortunately (in the grand scheme of things, fortunately) I moved out of Allston so I don't come back here often. There's one employee (don't know his name), seems like the manager or owner, who is probably the nicest and most helpful comic store employee in Boston. I'm a newbie at comics and he took all my questions seriously and unpretentiously. He has availed me and other customers with funny stories of douchey know-it-alls. In my experience, it's the customer service rather than merely selection that makes the comic shop. This has it in volumes. read more

This is a great comic shop. Great selection of my favorite titles and then some. The staff is really friendly and helpful. When I told him that I also collect trading cards (nerdy side is showing...haha) he said if I find something I want in the Previews catalogue to just let him know and they'll order it no problem. This review is mainly employee-based, about the woman working with blue and black hair. The moment a couple of my friends and I walked in we were given a rude lack-of-greeting. I had a heavy skateboard with me and I asked if there was any place I could put it, and she didn't really respond. She looked at me like I was speaking a different language. I offered to just hold it and she said "yeah. Do that." We shrugged off her tone and continued our business, until we were about to go downstairs. We barely even walked towards the door and she barked at is that we couldn't take bags down there. I know the difference between politely asking, sternly asking, an rudely demanding. He basically treated us like we didn't deserve to be I the store. We finally got to go downstairs and peeked around until we decided to go upstairs and look around some more, when she stopped us in the stairway telling us that we were being rude and disruptive. I should mention that when we went downstairs there were piles of comics sitting on top of the filled long boxes. She blamed us for "making a huge mess" and "throwing comics everywhere". After her rude accusations my friends and I were pretty stunned. She have us the option to gown down and clean or leave the store immediately. Followed by, "actually, you can just leave now. I changed my mind" when she grabbed the comics my friend was holding out of her hands. I'm shocked at how horribly she treated us for the moment we walked in, especially after having had so many wonderful experiences at other NEC stores. I definitely will not be coming back for a while. I hope that she is held responsible for how she treats customers and cleans up her act after this. That being said, the store itself was wonderful and I really wish I could have purchased a few trade backs that I couldn't seem to find anywhere else. read more

As a new comic book nerd, New England Comics has catered to me more than I could possibly ask for. Planning to try it out, I looked on their website and saw that I had just missed Silk artist Stacey Lee's signing that day. Bummed, I went to check it out anyway. The atmosphere was good, but the selection was great! After being amazed by all of the rare and vintage comics, I snagged a Grab Bag of The 'Nam, a few issues and Variants of Silk, Amazing Spider Man, and Spider Gwen, and went to the check-out a happy man. It's not just the comics though; the staff was funny, kind, and far from pretentious. The two employees at the front helped me with getting supplies to transport my comics for when I leave college for back home, and even better, they put forth the effort to give me the Stacey Lee Silk Ad that was on the door! Not only that, they even gave me a Silk #1 that was signed by Stacey Lee, too! Even better, everything was discounted (something I did not even realize at the time!) Though I thought that I had missed out on a great opportunity to meet my favorite comic book artist, the staff at New England Comics went above and beyond to give me the best possible experience! read more

I'm relatively new to comics (at least the weekly/monthly type you buy in comic shops), and I was a little hesitant to jump because of all the stories you hear about the treatment of women in comic book stores, and the stories of general condescension of comic folks towards newbies. But I was lucky to have picked the Coolidge Corner NEC (picked is a strong word... it was the closest comic shop to work). Everyone there has always been super nice and helpful when I can never find the titles I am looking for, and no one has ever been condescending about that or the books I pick. Multiple times, employees have gone out of their way to track things down for me at other branches when the book I wanted wasn't in-store. All in all a great experience--I still make the trek there for my comics even though I no longer work in the area! read more
