Lunch review only: Wow what happened to New Ginza? It used to be a wonderful place to go for a nice Teriyaki lunch and suddenly the beef went from $9.50 to $11.00 overnight! Further, they were always so great about understanding medium rare, but now the orders come out medium to well done. The salad dressing is your typical Japanese mayo-infusion but very good, but the beef always comes with just so-so noodles and undercooked asparagus spear chunks, which gets boring. Also all lunch specials come with soup and most with rice. The parking isn't too horrible but the side street is limited by a lot of driveways. I can't afford to go anymore and Tokyo City closed over in Allston so I am on the look out for somewhere new. Why oh why can't we have good Teriyaki on every corner like Seattle? read more

This was a random stop as we were heading back home to Cali. We wanted to taste Massachussets sushi before leaving town. What a surprise!! I The place was inviting and cozy with a well decorated exterior and interior; love the wood paneling. I can't quite remember the names of the rolls that we had but the picture says it all. Me and my sweets ate a little bit more than usual and had to stop ourselves...mmmm. Coming from California I do hold my sushi to a high standard and New Ginza did not disappoint. Sushi was good, but overpriced. To charge $8 for a spicy tuna roll, it's gotta be pretty spectacular. Same thing with the crazy roll. Avocado salad was $9. Everything was good but was simply overpriced compared to other sushi restaurants in the area. It seemed like everything was priced $2 too high. Great sushi, great sake, great service. The sake was wonderful. Sometimes sake is a little acidic for my taste, but not here. It was quite smooth. I went with a couple of friends. We ordered shumai and a dragon roll to start. Both were awesome. We each had different platters including the sushi combo and sashimi combo for dinner. Those plates are huge! I have lived within walking distance to this place for about three years now, and I have not been as many times as I wish. I have never had anything here that I didn't like. As others have reviewed, their waiting area sucks and it can be a long wait for a table/your food. If you like sushi I feel it's worth the wait. When you miss the service that you've seen in other parts of the US, or if you want very nice sushi, go here. The mood is mod/odd, dark with light wood, and hovering waitstaff but nice for a change for sure. On the pricey side esp for the location. I was there with my date Sunday night. Sat at the sushi bar, the serice was excellent. We had the Sashimi as appitizer and the salmon was so fresh and it just melted in your mouth. The seaweed salad was very nicely portioned. Overall the food is good and we will certainly be back again. read more

My family and I have been frequent customers at New Ginza for almost a decade. The waitresses are so friendly and nice! Masaki at the sushi counter is a master sushi chef from Japan. He carefully selects fine seafood and knows how to serve the best for his customers! You have to try his "Omakase (Chef's selection)" sushi or sashimi! The sashimi is thick and awesome; but the maki I ordered (I forgot which, but it's one of the expensive ones) is quite disappointing.

Food is pretty good; they even take special instructions which is nice. The girl taking phone calls is super sweet and just an absolute pleasure to talk to. One night the delivery guy was over an hour late from my estimated delivery time and New Ginza gave me a credit for the long wait which was amazing. New Ginza went above and beyond in that instance. Sooooo, I've had volcano rolls in several places so I must say, New Ginza definitely has the best volcano roll. The tempura flakes (or crunchy stuff) is the most fresh. I had toro and wild salmon sushi, 4 pieces in all for $18...in my perspective, a bit overpriced for the teeny (altho presented quite loverly), thin pieces of fish. When my sushi craving hits and I need something close by, I now have my go-to place. I had a really stressful day and was craving some soul food (my soul food is sushi) and we wanted something in watertown. New Ginza was perfect--easy to find free, street parking, really relaxing and soothing atmosphere, green tea galore and great (not the best, but still very good) sushi. The selection (especially of eel maki) was quite impressive and each of the rolls we ordered was as good as the next. Sushi was fresh and delicious. I recently moved to Newton, and I've been looking for a good place to go when a sushi craving hits. We've tried New Ginza several times now, both for takeout and dining in, and I'm reasonably impressed. Haven't tried the cooked food, so I can't comment on that. The sushi selection is by no means innovative, but it's well executed and the fish is always fresh. It's presented attractively on the plate, too, which makes a big difference. Prices are quite a bit steeper than what I've become used to in NYC (yes, really), with a meal for two running about $60, depending on the order. That said, everything we've tried thus far in Boston has been massively more expensive, so it's not out of line with the local market. The staff at New Ginza always seems happy to see us, which is nice, and they're prompt to respond to any questions or requests. read more

I actually set up an account just to write this review, because I am really unhappy with the food there. I ordered some Shrimp tempura makki, and thought it was gonna be really difficult for anyone to mess this up. Oh dear, did they prove me wrong!!! It was worse than pre-packaged ones sold in the grocery stores. A quarter of the rolls didn't even have shrimp in them, it was just rice ball with a piece of seaweed. The ones that do have shrimp are all soggy, and gross. For their price, it is totally unacceptable. As a matter of fact, it is not acceptable at any price. read more

Fugakyu is overrated - New Ginza is where it's at. Service is great, food is high quality at very reasonable prices, and they're very accommodating for vegetarians - I recommend a soba noodle soup with veggie broth and vegetables (not the tempura, just the vegetables), the eggplant appetizer, ebi mango roll (substitute a vegetarian roll for the fish, but very fun to have mango and tempura crisps on your sushi), and of course finish with green tea and ginger ice cream. When I lived near this place, I spent FAR too much money here. The staff started to recognize us, and (though they were always friendly) gave us very special service. Everything is SUPER fresh, and delicious. The sashimi menu is always changing and they offer some interesting choices. Uni is a tough one to get fresh, but when New Ginza had it, I was in heaven. Sake Sashimi was amazing. Cold, fresh, perfect. Ok size, but one more piece for the $8 would have made sense. I got the Crazy Maki which was delicious, but each piece was far to big to eat in one bite which made it a mess for me. Spicy Tuna maki was underwhelming. I'm not a huge spicy fan, but this had little flavor at all. Pieces were a good size, rice was a little warm for my liking. Overall I enjoyed it, but felt $24 was a little expensive. I'd be more likely to go back if I were sharing with someone instead of an early dinner alone during errands. read more

Defiantly on the pricy side but certainly worth it for the quality and presentation. I have been going here for years. I usually get the steamed shrimp shumi (I think around 6-8 dollars) the full size of vegetable tempora ( $15 I think) and my mother gets the chicken teriyaki . We've been eating here for years. The sushi is excellent, which is hard to do consistently. A little pricey, but worth it (cheap sushi can be a bummer). They do an outstanding job with the more obscure non-sushi items as well, such as the live urchin, etc. There are usually a variety of interesting specials as well. Also, everyone from the waitresses to the manager seems to be especially interested in making sure our visit is as perfect as it can be. I love this place! read more

New Ginza charges high prices for their sushi. Yes, the B52 Maki was tasty, but I was surprised that they only served us four pieces for $8. Was charged $3.50 for a glass of watered-down iced tea. It adds up by the end of the meal. Not worth the money. When I ordered take-out, I found a hair in the wasabi. When I called in to inform them, the wait staff was very friendly and attentive. They gave me a brand new order. Unfortunately, when I returned home I found yet another piece of hair. Will not be going back to this place. Consistent, even if some of their ingredients are a little bland. But everything is always exactly as ordered and their service is exceptional. I particularly enjoy their sushi rice. Bad rice will ruin any sushi. Salmon and eel sushi were good. I have had the eel many places and it is often a little rubbery, but never the case at New Ginza. Miso soup, check. Vegetable tempura, good - accompanying sauce isn't so flavorful though. Only thing I could really ask for is slightly lower prices, other than that it's a solid restaurant.
