The salt and pepper port chops were rock hard and barely chewable. The salt and pepper chicken wings were way too over fried and looked like it was molding. GROSS! The string beans were way too over cooked and soggy. I did not eat the lamb or onion veggies so I don't have much to say, but my family does not have anything good to say about these dishes. Visited this restaurant again when we were in Boston. Pre-ordered the chicken stuffed with sticky rice ($46) this time. Honestly, I actually preferred the regular sticky rice dish which is only $13. We ordered lamb chop and the dish had a really funky smell, definitely will not order this again here. The highlight dish was the pepper pig stomach soup, really peppery. The soft shell crab was really good. Since we ordered over $100, we got a lobster free and it was delicious too. In general, the dishes were quite oily. Food wise, this is a 3ish star rating. But this 1 star is really for my most recent experience. FYI: do NOT sit in the back corner of the restaurant (the other corner, opposite side of the fish tank). Consider yourself warned. Let's talk food first. I've had family dinners here before, its the typical asian restaurant in Chinatown. You come here for comfortish food. Typically, my family orders some veggies, some seafood and some rice dish. This time, we ordered a whole fish, which we typically ask them to steam/stir fry the meat. The heads we ask them to make soup with tofu and veggies (which they do charge you extra for). But nothing goes to waste, this one fish ended up being about 3-4 dishes for us (each charged separately). This is all comfort food, didn't go wrong, solid Canto food. Now let's get to the EXCITING part: We've been served all our dishes (minus the dessert soup, which comes at the end end). We're probably 20-30 minutes away from packing up and leaving, this is when I felt a drop of water hit me. You would assume its AC airvent water or something but it gets worse :) (They have mini splits so no vents) I look up and I see some dried water mark, so definitely NOT the first time they've had some type of water leak. One drop turns into many drops, this is when the we started getting attention from the ENTIRE restaurant. Everyone stares as multiple drops become STREAMS of water. Employees bring BUCKETS to contain the BROWN water. Next thing you know, the corner we're sitting is FLOODED. As we all do in 2022, everyone in the restaurant including myself, whip out our phones to record ;) We suspected that its toilet water lol bc thats a likely possibility. The owner says this loud enough for the restaurant to hear "its NOT toilet water, its SINK water from washing VEGGIES". Now we all know thats unlikely because there's no restuarant upstairs and what are the chances of this brown water coming from veggies. As we packed up and left, staff gave us our dessert soup in take out containers, told us to take it and dip. Then we hear the same owner on the phone screaming "Hey! Your toilet is leaking AGAIN. This rather unassuming looking restaurant may very well be a hidden gem of Boston's Chinatown. My husband and I were recently visiting for the first time, and we were truthfully overwhelmed by the number of options. We sort of picked this one at random, as it was conveniently located, had a menu with prices posted outside, and looked to be clean. Upon entering, the restaurant is really nothing special to look at. But, in my experience visiting Chinatowns in other cities, is usually a good sign indicating that they provide quality food rather than a tourist-friendly "show" to distract from the food. The menu is quite expansive. I would assume that almost anyone could find something they liked. Being that there were so many options, I went with the old standby of General Gau's chicken (aka General Tso's or General Zao's), and it was delicious. My husband got the fried noodles with shrimp, which was a unique dish not exactly as we expected, but still great. We also shared an order of crab rangoon, which were spectacular. In addition to the taste of the food, the portions were enormous and quite a great value for around $10-14/plate. We had enough left over for a decent dinner in the hotel later that night. The service was also very nice. We didn't have a hard time getting what we needed. Also, the food came very quickly after ordering. Ordered take out today! they said it would take about 20 minutes, but it took about 40 min, not a big deal at all though but just a consideration if you're in a rush. We ordered the fish head with garlic and onion. This was pretty ok, although the fish was a little overcooked. The flesh was chewy and rubbery. also the skinny was soggy. We were also super surprised it didn't come with white rice? usually entrees that aren't rice or noodles come with white rice. 2nd dish was Mapo's tofu. This was a good dish. It was the perfect level of spicy! It had a very familiar taste, it tasted similar to hot and sour soup. Also surprised this dish did not come with white rice. 3rd dish was beef chow fun. This was delicious! the beef was perfectly cooked and tender. the sauce was flavorful and savory. The noodles were very tasty with the sauce. Also it had some vegetables mixed in which was needed for that bite of green! This was our favorite dish. Lastly we got the chicken fried rice. Pretty standard CFR. nothing to rave about. New Golden Gate will be my lunch go-to when I'm passing through Chinatown! I ordered a lunch special (beef with string beans and pork fried rice, with egg drop soup on the side) over the phone with ease, and it was ready when I got there. The restaurant had provided napkins and a plastic fork and spoon, but the woman at the counter was very nice and gave me chopsticks when I asked for them. Another thing to note is that the takeout containers are just foam, so they are liable to leak, but the restaurant packs everything neatly upright and ties the bag in a way that keeps everything together, so I didn't have any issues with leakage despite carrying a lot of other stuff. When I opened up my food to eat, I was shocked by the amount that there was for just $6.40. There was probably 3 or 4 servings of rice, and maybe 2 servings of meat packed in there. I was also pleasantly surprised by the egg drop soup, which was the normal pale yellow-white color and tasted like home-made egg drop soup, rather than the thick, bright yellow kind restaurants sometimes serve. I enjoyed eating the pork fried rice with the egg drop soup, along with the beef and string beans. There wasn't a ton of pork in the fried rice, so it was a good accompanying dish, but the pieces of meat were each good and not fatty. The string beans and beef were also very tasty, and by the time I was full and ready to go catch my bus, it hardly looked like I had eaten at all! However, I had finished all of the soup and definitely ate a good amount of rice, beef, and string beans, but there was still somehow a ton of food left. I ended up sharing the leftovers with my parents as part of our dinner (supplemented by some other food), and there was more than enough rice to go around, which should give a sense of just how much food there was. New Golden Gate is another one of those late night, classic Chinatown spots that excel in authentic Cantonese seafood but misses the mark in service for those who are uninitiated. Honestly, half the reviews that are negative here only talk about the service (which in my experience was not bad at all), but if you came for AUTHENTIC food - then you are in the right place. I drove two hours just to try this place after my sister had sent pictures of their raw geoduck sashimi dish that brought fond memories of childhood for me. The best part about eating with my sister and cousin is that we don't let the wallet get in the way and order everything we wanted to try so the breakdown is below (mind you we finished everything as well): Raw Geoduck Sashimi (5/5): Served thinly sliced over ice and with soy sauce and wasabi, this dish was exactly how I remembered at Chinese weddings. They even presented the live geoducks to us beforehand for our approval. For those not in the know, geoducks (pronounced gooey-ducks), are large clams native to Washington state and are in no way, shape or form, related to actual ducks. :) Salt and Pepper Fried Geoduck Belly (5/5): In typical fashion, they batter and fry the parts of the geoduck that can not be eaten raw. This is done in the usual Canto fashion with a nice, softer batter and garnished with hot peppers. Delicious! Minced Crab and Fish Maw Soup (5/5): This is another common dish served at weddings, very similar to an what Americans would call egg drop soup. Make sure to ask for the red vinegar to mix in with the broth! They do not skimp on the crab meat here, and as a result, this soup is filled to the brim with that crab essence. Roast Duck (4/5): Typical duck that you would see hanging in the Chinatown restaurant windows. While they achieved a nice crunch to the skin, there was not a lot of meat and it was on the oily side. Clams and Vermicelli served on the Half-Shell (4/5): This was another unique dish that I had to try. The clams were cooked just right so that they were not too chewy and adding the vermicelli was a darn good idea. I just couldn't help but feel like they were bribing us with sesame oil for this dish again. Canadian Crab with Sticky Rice (4/5): This is another classic dish typically served at weddings. New Golden Gate did this right, and the freshness of the crab clearly was evident. Stir Fried Watercress (3/5): Typical stir fried watercress dish, flavor was decent, but way too much oil for my taste. I've walked along Beach Street many a time, but never stopped to dine here... till today for lunch at a friend's suggestion! The first dish we selected was Tailian Crispy Sticky Milk ($6.95) - described to me as that dish served with condensed milk, I don't know why, but I automatically assumed it would be that steamed unfilled buns with condensed milk thing I've had before - also yummy, but that wasn't it. When I bit into the fried bit (visually reminiscent of Americanized Chinese chicken fingers), I was pleasantly surprised by something sweet and white/creamy inside. Recently celebrated a milestone birthday for my dad here and it was a pretty decent turnout. We opted to come to Boston instead of staying locally just because of the geoduck clam and shrimp sashimi which didn't disappoint. The geoduck and the shrimp were served oh-so-fresh and were the highlights of our meals, as expected. The leftover geoduck (because we never waste anything!) was prepared salt and pepper style and the shrimp heads were sauteed in a spicy red sauce (see pics). The following were tried and true and come highly recommended: Lobster with ginger and scallions - Each of our tables were given a healthy pair of lobsters that were at least 2 lbs each. Right amount of seasoning served piping hot on top of yee mein. Just perfect. Steamed tilapia - Simply prepared and tasted great. My only comment was that I wished they told us what type of steamed fish we were getting. This was a packaged course deal and had I have known, I probably would've upgraded to a flounder or a bass. Still tasted great but just saying. Hong Kong style beef - I didn't personally try this dish but everyone on our table commented that it was very tender and flavorful and we're dealing with a bunch of prime rib connoisseurs so I thought to make mention of it here. Walnut Shrimp - Ordered this for my daughter as it's all she ever eats at these restaurants. For what the dish actually is, they do make it well here. Stir fried water spinach with bean curd - Great addition to the course spread. I'm used to more of a stronger bean curd flavor though and that may sound bad but it's so good that way. The other dishes were decent as well but too many to note here. Overall, the food was very fresh and service was friendly and attentive. My only gripe about the place is probably the space. It's a bit tight and with our large party, we would've preferred better seating than way back in the restaurant and scrunched up in the corner. It was around 11:30pm on a Saturdat night and for some strange reason, the Chow Chau City Restaurant in Dorchester was closed so we went here instead. I was pretty hungry by then and was happy that the food came out fast. My boyfriend and Vinnie wanted cold tea, lol. And they wanted to see our ids. I joked with the guy if he wanted to see my id since I was the youngest one there and I am a pretty old fart though I don't look it. Lol. We went on to order our food. We had the peapod stem with garlic. It was good. Always good no matter where I go. Well, I guess I usually go to the good places to avoid bad food in general. Lol. We had a pound or two of the big red shrimps from the tanks. We had it fried with chili peppers. So so good. I love fresh shrimps and especially ones with their heads attached. They were so sweet and meaty. Yes, big shrimps can sometimes taste better than lobster. Oh my god, did I say that? We also had the sizzling steak with green bell peppers. So tasty. I love eating late and eating for fun! It's like the after clubbing meal where good tasting food was more important than how much it was going to cost us. But ewww, the guys ordered and I was forced to try the frog in ginger and scallion. My boyfriend lied to me. It does not taste like Chicken! Yuck! Yuck! Yuck! And they were thinking of turtle and alligator. Seriously, guys are too funny. The desert wasn't good. They added some sort of Chinese herb in with the sweet black bean desert so it tasted like my mom's Chinese herbal medicines that she stew for hours. It wasn't a good combination. I paid for my order and waited a short while. She gave me my order of rice and a can of coke. She then says "No bottle, only can." First thought is bottle cost more than can, did she over charge me? Second thought is she blatantly lied to me when I initially asked her for a bottle. Updated review based solely on service received: I will likely stop coming here after my last experience. I came in with a party of 16 people on a Sunday night for dinner. Service was curt which is somewhat to be expected but what ensued was rather disappointing. My table ordered geoduck - which was shown to me prior to cooking. These were massive but what was served to us looked like only half of what was shown. I asked the waiter and he was curt and said "that's just how it is!!" However, when I'm paying $20/lb I expect to be served what I was shown/ordered. Despite the kitchen denying it, I later hear a waiter yelling at the kitchen in Cantonese about how they treat customers badly and rip people off since table ordered 4 twin lobsters and only received 4 claws when they should've received 8 (each lobster has 2). Sketchy business practices in my book. When the check came, my party was in a group to leave so I looked at the bill and did mental match which seemed right at the time, but I got home and redid the math after looking at a menu and they charged us $10 more than what our total actually was! SMH If you really thought we were going to tip poorly, you deal with it. But don't add EXTRA to our bill. The last straw, our group was all Asian and we love our red bean soup dessert. As we entered around midnight we were shown right to a table and told they are open until 4 am. Wow... those are late night hours for sure! We looked over the menu and I decided to let my friend who suggested eating here choose the plates. We ended up with soup and rice?? So here we go.... I tried the Wonton Noodle Soup, a bit disappointed for such an easy dish, the wontons were bland and had a tiny bit of what I believe was beef? The broth salty and very undesirable. I give this soup 1 star The second soup I tasted was the Hot and Sour which was easily superior to the Wonton Soup. It had an authentic taste and would give this soup 4 stars. I also tried the House Rice again pretty bland with more chicken pieces than veggies or anything else you would expect when ordering House Rice in Chinatown. I'd give it a 2 star rating. Service is what you may expect late night. I will say if I ever find myself in Chinatown in the middle of the night I guess I know where a nice warm place to eat is .... OMGoodness! I'm so disappointed with their food! I haven't eaten there in a long time so I thought why not. But why not make your food decent? I ordered off the lunch menu for the first time. Of course it's not priced as nice as it used too before inflation/pandemic.. anyway, I ordered two dish and added the sides of chicken fingers and the ravioli ... mind you, they are fried foods and should stay crispy crunchy but I discovered it inside my boxes with with steams! I wanted to cry because I hate hate inconsiderate mindless thinkers to act like they don't care. And I hate soggy fried foods. $4 takeout lunch review: I really enjoy this place. Lots of quick, inexpensive food. I ordered many different dishes here. Noodles, rice, beef, chicken, vegetables all enjoyable and exactly what I was expecting. The soup is either egg drop or Hot and sour, both are decent for the price. And they give you enough food for 2 people! Overall, I found that New Golden Gate has excellent selection of Americanized Chinese food at a great price. read more

I went here recently with my family and we ordered the 10 person seafood meal. In addition, we ordered a dish of Peking style pork chops and a dish of Chinese broccoli. I couldn't try out half of the dishes because I don't eat crab and shrimp. I thought the crispy fried chicken was a bit dry. The salt and pepper three delights was good but a tad spicy. My favorites were the Peking style pork chops and the salted fish and chicken fried rice. read more

Taisty food at good prices for Boston's Chinatown so I picked two meals under $9 so glad after 11:PM. I found a restaurant in Boston's Chinatown I like. Shrimp with vegetables and white rice I found very tasty yet the Beef Brisket priced at $6.50, I got what I paid for because the brisket was very fatty and I don't like the flavor it added to the rice. Next time I will try the Duck on Rice to compare it with DC's Chinatown food. Straing that they use San Francisco visitSymbols to represent their restaurant in in San Francisco's Chinatown yet this restaurant host didn't know of any connection which is somewhat foolish I think. In San Francisco the meet options are not the same plus a buttery texture in these meals, it would not be an authentic competition of Chinatowns which would be interesting to compare. read more

So, this is reviewing just the lunch special. Ordered on a Thursday afternoon for take-out and it was not good. The pork fried rice had literally two pieces of pork, no flavor and the pieces of rice were mushy. It was the worst pork fried rice I've ever had. The string beans and beef weren't amazing either. For $6.50, I would go elsewhere. It's $5 for their lunch special and an extra $1 for dumplings. At that rate and quality, I'll go to Potluck Cafe for more options, food, and flavor. read more

great place for authentic chinese food in boston chinatown. fairly priced, food comes exceptionally quick. one downside is that they rushed us to order but thats not really a complaint. comfy place if ur used to chinese restaurants with loud talking chinese staff and customers. basically great place for fellow chinese ppl but definitely a great experience for those who are unfamiliar with AUTHENTIC chinese food. great place overall read more

Really great Chinese food. They have opened for decades here. Even the waiting staff have never changed haha. All the dishes taste super great. Definitely order the lobster. Other dishes are good too. Even the most plain vege dish is like very very tasty! The service here is pretty nice too. Highly recommend! read more

It's alright - and it's open til 4 a.m. Not many places sell spot prawns, king crab and geoduck at 3 o'clock in the morning. It's not the cleanest place, but that's par for the course in late night dining. The salt and pepper pork chop is not bad; the veg was all pretty tasty. read more

I hadn't gone here in nearly a decade so I recently stopped by on a whim to grab some Cantonese beef chow fun and chow mein. Both were very tasty and the total for the two massive orders was only $17. The chow mein wasn't packaged separately from the sauce so the noodles were soggy by the time I got home, but that's how I like them personally so it wasn't a problem for me. Both noodle dishes tasted homemade and fresh and weren't bland like that of some other spots around the corner. I always saw this place packed late at night so I admit I had a bad impression of the restaurant. My favorite place for early am yummers. Unfortunately, this place has changed its hours due to Covid which I had to find out at 2am when munchies hit and I climbed out of bed and drove over. Gah! Try the beef fried rice! It's the only place I know that doesn't put huge chunks of rubbery "beef" in the rice.
