Came here on whom, to new Kathmandu Kitchen which seemed like an authentic place in every sense of the word! We had a wonderful lunch here and were impressed from the first bite. The potato samosas were absolutely on point, crispy, flavorful, and perfectly prepared. The vegetable pakoras were delicious, especially with the authentic tamarind and mint chutneys for dipping. We also ordered the chicken fried momos with chili sauce, and wow! They arrived perfectly cooked, hot, and full of flavor. Everything tasted fresh and thoughtfully made. Abdullah, our waiter, was gracious, welcoming, and attentive. We were the only guests there for lunch, but the restaurant felt clean, warm, and inviting. It is clear they care about both the food and the customer experience. I recommend this place, if you are looking for authentic Nepali and Indian food. Being the only one in my household that enjoys Indian food it's rare I'm able to partake in the eating of such deep flavors and mind opening sauces. My friend Chip told me he knew of one of the finest East Indian eateries in town. Plans were made for a mid day lunch immediately. The restaurant is located right on J street, neighborhood parking was plentiful. The dining area isn't large but very clean and the smells coming from the kitchen are phenomenal. It's hard not to work up an appetite just walking by on the street. We started with samosas. They were huge and crispy in texture and the insides filled with soft potatoes and awesome seasonings. The sauces that they came with were bomb too. The butter chicken was delicious. The sauce it was cooked in hit every taste bud imaginable. Dare I say my leftovers tasted better than the initial day. Chip got the Chicken Vindaloo. Boneless chicken cooked with the potatoes. This dish really stood out. I would order it again. Think of an Indian stew and you got this dish. Made me wish the weather was cold and rainy. The garlic naan is a must try as well guys. A restaurant like this deserves every star it's been given. The server was super gracious and helpful. So. . . We were supposed to be going to a birthday party, but I got the date wrong so my husband found this place on Yelp! When we walked in, it was empty, and it remained empty the entire time we were there which was about an hour. Our server was quiet/soft spoken. The restaurant was pretty quiet as well. The art on the walls is very pretty. Our family and I really enjoyed the food. The chicken momo was a hit with my daughters, the butter chicken (my order) was just okay but my husband had the best dish of the table in my opinion: chicken chili. I was craving Indian food, so I ordered the shahi paneer and vegetable pakoras. The paneer had really great flavor--super cozy and comforting, and honestly delicious in every bite. The pakoras were good as well and it came with a green sauce that had a good kick to it, however the pakoras did seem a little overcooked, almost like they may have been left in too long. My main critique would be the portion size. For about $20, the paneer came in a pretty small container. Usually, my husband and I can share a dish like that at other restaurants and feel full, but this one didn't quite hit the mark for the price. If you want a bang for your buck, this may not be the spot to go. I had a craving for Veggie Momos and my friend knew just the place to try. Even though New Kathmandu Kitchen is in East Sac, parking was surprisingly easy, thanks to their tiny parking lot in the back. On a weekday night after work this was a cinch. I confirmed the Veggie Momos were in fact vegan (believe it or not lots of places sadly put dairy in them) and yes they are. Hooray! But why stop there? Our friendly server helped me navigate the other vegan items (there are several) so we also ordered some Veggie Pakora, Began Bartha, and Mushroom Masala to share. No surprise for me, the Veggie Momos were the star of the meal and had a tasty dipping sauce. Everything else was also good and had plenty of favor. I would definitely come back for more. read more

The restaurant was nice and quiet on Monday night, so we were able to enjoy a quiet, peaceful dinner with some of the most delicious food. The saag paneer was delicious, but the Chana masala and the coconut chicken curry (mild) were absolutely spectacular. The pakora were all tasty and crunchy without being greasy. The naan were generously portioned and pillowy soft and tender with a great amount of chew, a perfect vehicle for the curries. Service was attentive and accommodated our modifications without issue. I hate giving a bad review, and originally I would've given this place 2 stars but some many circumstances (allergic reaction/overpriced food) make me actually give it a zero if I could So to start off the service is mediocre, when my family and I can in we were seated quickly but then to order and to get the check we had to head to the counter to ask someone since it took so long. Because Diwali is today they had several online orders and so our three dishes took about 35-40 minutes. Additionally the pricing for the food does not equate to the quality at all. As South Asians I would say my family has a good barometer for South Asian food and there is a lot of room for improvement. The chicken leg was undercooked and pink to the bone, the momo dish's curry seemed to have too much lemon in it but at the same time was so bland???, and the veggie chow mein had an odd aftertaste. Additionally, out of the 200+ dine in experiences we have had at South a Asian restaurants we have never had to pay nearly $7 for TWO pieces of medium sized store bought naan that's the worst rip off I've seen to date. Overall our dinner added up to $70 which is absurd because on average our go to restaurants we can get roughly twice as much food for $80. The final straw was the fennel snack served at the front desk - I don't know what was wrong with it but my entire family had a slight allergic reaction to it orally and as for me I have had the worst/most painful hives of my life from my feet to up to my neck for the last 12 hours (still ongoing/on the come down). These hives started up about 30 minutes after leaving the restaurant so I know it was from here. Additionally the color story and dim fluorescent lighting gives the restaurant a very uncomfortable and claustrophobic ambiance, especially so at night. The red lighting in the bathroom did not help the case. Another thing aboit the service - they do not pick up food left from previous customers until all the tables have left overs it seems, next to where they sat us was someone's leftovers, and in the 1.5-2 hours my family was there the dishes of three other families were never picked up. read more

As an appetizer, we ordered Mozzarrella Naan which has melted mozzarella sandwiched between two slices of naan bread. It was like an Indian quesadilla. As a main entree, I had the Chicken Chili. Feeling lazy and not wanting to cook, my husband, and I decided to order takeout from new Kathmandu kitchen. We placed our order for a variety of entrées and he went to pick it up. The food was ready fairly quickly. We decided to start with an order of vegetable samosas. The exterior was perfectly fried, and the samosa itself had a nice filling. It was flavorful and had a good level of heat. For our entrées, we decided to do butter chicken, saag paneer, and Baingan bharta. Since it was our first time ordering from here, we ordered all three entrées at the medium level of spice because we weren't sure how strong it would be. I did not notice any level of spice whatsoever so I would definitely make the dishes spicier if we ordered from here again. We rounded out our meal with fresh rice and garlic naan. The garlic naan had a nice chew to it and helped to soak up all of the sauces. All in all, it was a decent experience, but overall, I felt that the dishes lacked any real flavor or distinguishing features. The spice level is not as high as other Indian restaurants, so mild level was not flavorful enough for me and went for medium next times. The ambiance is not the greatest, but ok. I walked here from the hospital I work at for dinner takeout. The restaurant is in an old building on J Street in East Sacramento. There was a small area for dining in and no one was there. My order was ready when promised. Everything looked as expected and tasted very good. The garlic nan was warm and went great with my butter chicken. My visit to New Kathmandu Kitchen was long overdue. I love Himalayan and Nepalese food and have been wanting to try their momos since I first passed by this spot while running errands. I finally had my chance and stopped in for an early dinner with a friend. While I knew I was going to order their Chicken Momos ($15.95 for 10), we also decided to try more of their options. We ordered the medium spicy Chicken Tikka Masala ($16.95) and the Butter Chicken ($16.95) along with rice ($2.95), garlic naan ($4.95) and a Masala Chai ($4.95). I always feel a bit basic ordering things like Tikka Masala and Butter Chicken, but it's a great way to judge flavors with familiar dishes and people love these dishes for a reason. Definitely comfort food! We were there early, so we were the only diners for most of our visit, but it did seem like a lot people were ordering take out and delivery. The wallpaper was gorgeous and they had a fun mural on one of their walls as well. I think next time I'd try to get a seat by the windows for slightly better lighting on my photos, but it was still great where we were sat. The food came out hot and fresh and everything was delicious. The momos were super flavorful and I loved the sauce with them. The butter chicken was SO RED, I wasn't ready for the color but it was striking and tasted wonderful. Even though both the butter chicken and tikka masala was medium spicy, we felt the butter chicken packed a bit more heat. It really will be hard to order different items to try because the tikka masala, butter chicken and momos were so good. The garlic naan is always a nice addition and my friend enjoyed her masala chai. They do have their own parking, but it is TIGHT! Also there is no indication that it is one way so people were turning in from J and 37th and the way the spots are set up it can create a bit of an issue. A true hidden gem. The food was amazing! Everything was fresh and authentic. Our dinner included samosas as appetizers. Then Lentil soup. Followed by the chicken tikka masala, Saag Paneer, side of basmati rice and garlic basil naan. Medium spice was perfect for us. You can taste the flavor but heat doesn't linger or burn you. We decided to give this place another try because our original dinner plans fell through, and the smell coming from the restaurant outside was amazing. We are very glad we did. The food was excellent this time, and the naan tasted fresh. Perhaps there has been a change in ownership or chefs. We would definitely recommend this restaurant now and plan to come back. New Kathmandu Kitchen was a fantastic restaurant! My husband and I went there the other day for a weeknight date night. There were plenty of tables and there was no wait. Service was quick and friendly. The server brought multiple water refills without us asking and made sure the spice level was just right. Every dish was absolutely perfect. I've visited a couple times and I love this place! I'm tried their butter chicken, chicken tikka marsala, garlic and regular naan, chicken momo and basmati rice and all of it was amazing. The butter chicken has an incredible rich red color and depth of flavor. The tikka marsala is a bit less intense. With both if you are not a big fan of spice I would recommend mild because even the medium is not super hot but just hot enough that it distracts a bit from the flavors. We had a wonderful dinner here on a Thursday evening. Every table was full except for the one we sat at, great timing! We walked and were immediately greeted and seated. We ordered from the specials menu and recommend the momos along with the chow mien. There was only one server but he was very proud to be serving dishes he really loved. He was rushing from table to table doing his best to get everyone's dishes out. Patience was key and everyone recognized his hard work. The food was flavorful and delicious. The mono were excellent, very flavorful. I was hesitant to try the chow mien but our server recommended it so we gave it a try, they use tandoori chicken and spices I could not recognize but it was delicious. We ordered everything medium and it was a nice spice level for us. The naan was as more bread like than I was used to but still very nice, served steaming hot. For my first try at this cuisine I really enjoyed it. This is not a fancy establishment, it feels very cozy here with white table cloths. I came here around 11:15am today for lunch for the first time and ordered the chicken pakora, chicken momo, and chicken tikka masala (mild) with naan and rice. Luckily this place has a parking lot since parking in East Sacramento can be difficult sometimes so that was a plus. It is nice, clean, and spacious inside. The chicken pakora had a nice crunch and great flavor. I loved both sauces it came with. The chicken momo was good but the chicken pakora definitely outshined it for me. The tikka masala I could've done medium next time maybe but it was very flavorful and kinda on the sweet side. The naan and rice were great quality, the naan was probably my favorite I have had so far anywhere. The service was very fast and friendly as well. My husband and I tried this place for the first time tonight (new year's day). There were only a few other diners eating in. It seemed like most of their business was for take out. They were very busy with customers picking up orders, but we were still seated in a timely manner. The staff was courteous but not chatty. The restaurant itself was pretty quiet with just the kitchen and other customers for background noise. Our orders were taken and the food came out reasonably fast. We enjoyed the food we ordered very much. We tried the butter chicken, lamb korma, vegetable samosas, and garlic basil naan. Don't forget to order rice (not included with entree). The food was pretty comparable to other Indian food restaurants we've tried in the area. The portions were smaller than our usual place in midtown (as in we usually have leftovers, but here we didn't). It's not necessarily a bad thing, just something we noticed. Overall, our impression was positive. It's probably somewhere we'll be ordering takeout from in the future. First we ordered the 2 piece Vegetable Samosa (pastry stuffed with potato, green peas and spices) which came with 2 sauces!! They were ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS!! Mmmmmmm Best Samosa we ever had!! My daddy ordered the Mango Chicken(boneless dark meat chicken cooked with mango sauce, onion gravy, ginger, garlic and spices..) James said it was the BEST THING he's ever tasted! I ordered the Salmon Masala (cooked in homemade creamy masala sauce) Which was the most DELICIOUS salmon that I've ever tasted!! Not tough/overcooked but Perfectly and gently cooked, tender and the sauce was incredible!! We also ordered the Garlic Naan .. which was freshly baked and fluffy and I got full just dipping pieces of the naan on both of our sauces!! OH SOOOOO GOOD!! I called the waiter over and asked him if he was Nepalese and that I saw that Google showed this restaurant as Nepalese ?? He said yes they were Nepalese but they only offered Indian cuisine. He stated there were no authentic Nepalese restaurants in CA and the only way we would be able to taste authentic food from his country was from someone's home!! My friend suggested this place for dinner and, OMG THIS SPOT WAS FIRE. Since my favorite spot on florin switched owners "Tandoori Grill" I haven't had a to go to Indian spot. Well ladies and Gents and everything in between NEW KATHMANDU KITCHEN is my ish now. The food was so flavorful, so delicious omg I ordered the saag panner with basmati rice the garlic naan. Also tried the curry chicken it was the best I've had since tandoori grill. I loved it. The place was clean, service wasnt all that great but still wont stop me for giving them the 5 stars for the fact their food was just soo damn good! They have parking behind the building since J street sucks. I will be back for sure. Check em out. Great good and very friendly staff. My family reserved table for large group party. The restaurant accommodated for our requests. The staff went above and beyond to make sure our Birthday party went well. They offered extra table to have cake & presents on, offered to help us quickly decorate, staff seemed happy and not frustrated with a large group. Mind you, the restaurant was open to the rest of the public so they had regular customers as well. I know it wasn't their job to help us setup or offer extra table (which they could have used for more customers) but they were super accommodating. This place treated us like we were their family and wanted to make sure we were happy! The food is delicious. This was my second time eating here. We ordered several entrees for our group. I highly recommend this place. It's a small restaurant with family vibes, amazing food and friendly staff & owner. I know my family will come here again. read more
