After living in Seattle for 40 years, I can finally say I've eaten at Seattle's oldest Chinese American restaurant, opened in 1935 and still family-owned and operated. The restaurant also has a special connection to Seattle history, famously being a place where Bruce Lee ate. Their menu reflects a very distinctly Chinese American style of cooking, and it's clear they make an effort to keep things natural and balanced. Even the sweet-and-sour dishes avoid the bright-red, overly sweet sauce found at many Chinese American restaurants. Their approach is definitely unique--and while it's not quite my personal favorite style of Chinese American cooking, I appreciate what makes this institution different and enduring. And, Those brown wood paneling- oh, my!!! A few highlights from our meal: * Char siu pork: Tender, nicely cooked bites with hot mustard and sesame seeds. A classic done well. * Chicken wings: Hot, crispy and nicely fried. I'm definitely a fan of their wings! * Chow mein: Crispy Hong Kong-style noodles topped with plenty of fresh vegetables, including bamboo shoots and water chestnuts. Nicely prepared. * Sweet-and-sour spareribs: Lightly battered with a darker, brown sweet-and-sour sauce rather than the bright-red version. Different, but enjoyable--especially gnawing the meat and cartilage right off those little bones! * Shrimp with vegetables: Nicely prepared with black bean and garlic sauce. Good flavor and generous vegetables. * Pea vines with garlic sauce: Light, delicate and delicious. * Moo shu pork: Flavorful, although a little wetter than I prefer for making the pancake roll-ups. I may have overstuffed mine a bit, too! * Dungeness crab egg foo young: This was the disappointment of the meal. The patties were thick, fluffy and nicely fried with bean sprouts, but unfortunately I couldn't really see, smell or taste the crab. Next time, I'd probably order it with shrimp instead. Service was attentive, with several different servers helping throughout our meal. At a table of six, I found myself making sure to be present and ask whenever we needed something, but overall the staff was friendly and attentive. Parking? Good luck finding street parking in this neighborhood! While vacationing in Seattle, my family wanted to eat rice. I eat a lot of rice back home, so I made sure that if we were going to eat rice and Asian food, I wanted to go to a restaurant unique to Seattle. After researching on Yelp, I learned that Tai Tung is the oldest Chinese restaurant in Seattle and Bruce Lee's favorite restaurant. As a Bruce Lee fan, I knew I wanted to come here. It was a short Uber ride from our Airbnb to the restaurant, which is located in Chinatown. The restaurant has such a nostalgic feeling, like you just entered an 80s kung fu movie set. I felt like I was in China. There's also a huge mural of Bruce Lee on the front wall of the restaurant. I really loved the ambiance. The food was pretty good too. We ordered the shrimp fried rice, combination chow mein, honey walnut shrimp, fried calamari, and Mongolian beef. I liked every single dish, with the honey walnut shrimp and Mongolian beef being my favorites. They also serve complimentary hot tea. Customer service was good, and the prices were very reasonable. Wow!!! Wasn't sure what to expect, saw a video on tiktok, didn't feel like wasting my one day off on my work trip doing the space needle so I went here. Love, love, loved it! It feels like a cozy hole in the wall. All the servers and staff were busy an in motion but friendly to all visitors, I was seated quickly. They have hot tea at the table which was prefect for me. A older coworker from Hong Kong has been raving about Peking Duck and how much I need to try it and so I did. Absolutely amazing. The food was absolutely delicious, and the service was fast. We came on a saturday evening around 6 PM and there was an expected wait, but we didn't have to wait too long considering how quickly they were turning over tables! There was, however, one thing that left a bit of a bad taste in our mouths. After a first round of drinks, we told the server that we were *considering* ordering a long island iced tea, but we didn't place the order with him. He told us to let us know. When he brought back my partner's second beer, he also brought the long island iced tea... that we had never ordered. We didn't appreciate that it felt forced on us, but wouldn't have said anything, except that the drink actually just tasted like sweet lemonade and the coke he poured in from the can at the table. We didn't taste any alcohol, and didn't like the flavor, so we sent the drink back. They took it off the bill. Just something to be aware of! read more

My dad really liked the Pork Chow Mein. I ordered the Mongolian Beef which I generally love but it was so spicy that neither my father nor I could eat more than a bite of it. Fortunately we had also ordered the Sweet and Sour Pork which was totally amazing and the Pot Stickers which were also very good. My dad isn't a big tea drinker but he had five cups of it and loved it. He had time to drink five cups of tea before I could join him because that's how long it took me to find parking, which I finally did two blocks over. This required me walking through a sketchy alley as a shortcut to get back to the restaurant. Unfortunatley I didn't realize how sketchy it was until I passed several drug addicts shooting up. So mental note to self, avoid alleys in China Town. The restaurant was super busy, which is always a good sign, and the employees were very friendly and helpful with my dad who is elderly and not super mobile. I would get food from here again but next time I'll take an Uber so I don't need to sweat parking. read more

This is the kind of place I picture when I picture an old school Chinese restaurant. Probably because it is! We had friends in town from the east coast and they asked for Chinese food. I had been meaning to check Tai Tung out, and having a group is a great opportunity to try a variety of dishes family style. We ordered the fried chicken wings, half peking duck, beef chow fun, beef in oyster sauce (Bruce Lee's favorite), crab fried rice, and noodles with tofu (one girl had to be healthy!) The food was solid and nostalgic. It reminded me of the kind of Chinese food I would get in the 80s and 90s when we went out for Chinese food in New Jersey. We stayed, talking, until the restaurant closed. As my friends packed up and said their goodbyes, the staff noticed me looking around at the different tables. I wanted to find Bruce Lee's favorite table, which I had seen on online reviews of Tai Tung. The staff member very proudly brought us all into the next room, turned on the lights, showed us the photos on the wall, and told us about the history. We got a history and culture lesson with our meal. I love coming to Tai Tong, and today was no exception. It's like the Chinese food of my childhood made with very fresh ingredients and good flavors. The potstickers are so crispy they must be fried. But i love them, with their great filling to crispy wrapper ratio and tasty sauce. Almond chicken was loaded with crispy vegetables - celery, water chestnuts and peas. The sauce simple but still surprisingly satisfying. The special fried rice is also very satisfying. And with that brown hue you just can't find anywhere else around here. Loved the special spareribs. So delicious, and messy! But you don't care as you chew the bone to get every bit. If you are an egg foo young fan, you really need to try theirs (I like the shrimp), with that brown sauce that keeps you coming back for more. When you visit the Chinatown-International District in Seattle, there visual monuments to a caring Asian amd Pacific Islander community that have built the neighborhood over the last century. However, there is non-desript Chinese restaurant near the corner of Maynard Avenue, with windows covered by painted murals leftover from protecting the neighborhood from vandalism during the COVID-19 era. The murals are definitely of movie, and cultural legend Bruce Lee, whose favorite restaurant was Tai Tung. His lifesized cutout hangs out in the dining area usual reserved for large parties. All the history being said, the food must be good, right? Well, it is! Tai Tung's offerings have fueled its patrons, literally, for generations, with only a few changes in their menu to meet modern tastes. In my meal with family, we had the traditional favorites like House Special Fried Rice, and Sweet and Sour Chicken, as well as roasted duck. We also order stir fry beef with gai-lan and some egg drop soup with spinach. There are of course some modern classics such as honey walnut shrimp which are in the menu. Now if you are looking for dishes like all you can eat hot-pot and dim sum, or offerings that push the boundaries of the Chinese culinary world, that's another kind of establishment. This is Seattle comfort food, traditional Chinese-American style. It's glorious. And its why Bruce Lee himself endorsed it with his constant visits decades before... it is that good for the soul. I went back here the other day and tried the king Pao chicken and it was very good. Different then you'll get other places but that's the appeal. We also got some sautéed Chinese greens that were very tasty as well. The prices here used to seem astronomical but now it's actually a good price for what you get. The Chicken Wings and Kung Pao were excellent, but the Chow Mein honestly underwhelming, and the Fried Rice more than a bit dry. Tai Tung was recommended to me as the best Chinese restaurant in Seattle. It's located in the Chinatown area where there are many options to choose from, but this restaurant has been around since 1935! The longevity is for good reason as their pecking duck was phenomenal! I ordered the whole bird for the 3 of us along with some special fried rice. The rice was very tasty, but the duck was really the star of the show. Deliciously crispy skin on the drums and the breast meat was tender and flavorful. The bao buns were also fresh and piping hot. Located in the heart of the CID, the decor is a dark wood, old school Chinese restaurant feel. My favorite dish is the Mongolian beef. My mom worked in a Chinese restaurant when I was growing up and this is just like the dish my mom used to make. The beef is super tender and flavorful. Lots of onions and puffed rice under everything that provides a nice crunchy texture to compliment the delicious and tender beef. The portions are generous, so be ready to take some food home. There's some cozy booth seating on the main level and the lower level has some Bruce Lee pictures next to his favorite table. The lunch combo sets comes with soup, chicken chow min, pineapple spareribs, egg foo young and rice. We got our food, took our photos and now time to eat! I requested for the chili oil sauce and it sure was great, nice spice to my meal! What's the the verdict: very good and tasty Chinese food, different from Oahu. Ex. the egg foo young comes with a gravy sauce and the noodle for chow mein is different but no complaints, we enjoyed it. The shrimp is a nice size and I liked that it cooked with garlic, lite black bean, onions with a tasty gravy sauce- so good on rice! It was nice dining in, Chinese style and enjoying the food at Seattle's Chinatown. I think we made the right decision, my husband thanked me for recommending this spot. It was a great experience. Oh, what so spooky, scary and unreal is my fortune cookies ( see photo of fortune) we received 4 cookies with our bill, after I ate my two , my fortune is so real, so true! The oldest Chinese restaurant in Seattle warranted a visit, and we came in from a blustery cold windy day. The walls are adorned with the photos of the many famous guests over the years, and of course the claim to fame of being Bruce Lee's favorite Chinese spot in Seattle. We were seated and the menu is all family style. For 2 people it is daunting to order that much food - especially if one's hotel room doesn't have a microwave for leftovers.. Still we got a soup and 2 entrees to share, and did our damndest to finish as much as we could. It wasn't that the food wasn't tasty - absolutely was - just its a looot of food. Easily this could have fed three people instead of just the 2 of us. We didn't even order an appetizer. We got the mustard soup (it seemed the lightest of the soup options), the oyster sauce beef and the chicken chow mein (crispy noodles). Everything was delicious and as said before, very filling. The kung poa chicken had a weird taste and it also looked a little different than what I've seen at other Chinese restaurants. The beef chow fun is apparently one of their more popular items however I felt like the noodles were lacking flavor, however the beef was pretty good! Overall I think this spot was just okay!
