Beef and Chicken Jerky
Kimberly J.

Oriental Recipes offers Singaporean style jerky. This tender, slightly sweet/salty and smoky slice of meat is grilled right in front of you. This type of jerky should not be confused with what you would find at 7-11. The jerky here is tender and packed with flavor. Free samples are offered in front of the store. The employees here are very friendly and helpful. You can buy a few slices or bigger bags filled with meaty goodness. Perfect to snack on or to give as a gift. Their jerky is leaning towards the pricier side but definitely high quality. A must visit if you're in the First Markham Place area. Note: Don't forget to stop by Fruit Jungle next door for some bubble tea. They are forking out the real stuff. Two great places right beside each other. Win!

I learn something NEW everyday, mostly unintentional. I learned that the Singapore or Macau Jerky I've been eating all these years, Wikipedia notes it as "Bakkwa Jerky". The second thing that I learned while some of you might have already noticed is that there's a new Singapore-style Pork Jerky specialty shop in town(Town of Markham). Personally I don't remember Pork or Beef Jerky that well but most of the ones noticeable are Vacuum-sealed meaning it holds longer than the FRESH ones that are made in-house at Oriental Recipes. Most of you in-the-know will recognize the Soo Singapore Jerky brand that features the Merlion logo. I praise them for bringing this specialized Asian tradition/concept to Markham as before if you wanted this product, you would have to go to a Chinese Snack or Grocery to purchase the pre-packaged variety with very minimal selection. The truth is that fresh Jerky taste very different from pre-packaged Jerky while both are just as addictive if you're into that sort of snackfood. As with any Jerky product, it doesn't come cheap which makes it an occasional treat more than a daily ritual. In Asia, it is a popular item as a Gift. Maybe I'll keep that in mind next time if I'm feeling generous. 100 gram = $5.00 As for how it taste I've got to say even when comparing it with the Macau Fresh Pork Jerky that my friend smuggled in, it's very comparable but the grilled flavour lingers much more with the ones Oriental Recipes grills that you can sometimes observe from time to time. Oriental Recipes only offers Pork not Beef but has a choice between spicy or non-spicy. Last thing I have to say is that for those Pork Jerky fans out there, if you're into this stuff you better go support it before it becomes another obsolete memory. You know how quickly those shops at First Markham Place shuts down, just take Shin Jung Korean for example.

Warning: highly addictive good stuff! Just as other reviewers have mentioned, this store sells jerky that is comparable to those in HK and Taiwan. They have a variety of flavours, which you may ask for samples if you're not sure what to get. I usually end up with the original pork or spicy pork straight from the grill -- it's softer and really tasty! For the freshly-made jerky, you'll need to consume these in 4-5 days. If you want something with longer shelf life, or in my case, hoarding when I travel back to the US, I just get a couple of vacuum-sealed packs (2 for $10) to go.

Love this handmade jerky. The smell of the BBQ will lead you to the jerky place once you stepped in the plaza. They are a bit pricy, but worth! Tried the pork seaweed today and it is pretty good. Spicy pork is always my fav!! ** Groupon's deal until end of April: $15 for $25 or $24 for $40 ** Got 9 pieces for $28 today : ) Just paid $3 + $15 Groupon!! ^^Reheat them in toaster oven for 3 - 5 min will taste as good as fresh^^

Decided to try out this Asian style jerky place. They made them all on the spot, so they are really moist. Chose a variety of flavours. Original Pork Spicy Pork Black Pepper Pork Beef Chicken & Duck Overall, all the jerkys are ok in flavour. My favourite one was the spicy pork and beef. The beef one was a bit stiffer in texture. I would prefer jerkys to be a stiffer consistency. Most of them were like slices of grilled deli meats than jerkys. I also bought 1 of their imported items from Taiwan. It was an authentic pineapple pastry. Quite good, full impact of flavour, and the pastry was nice and buttery, would get more, but it was quite pricy. $1.99 for a 1 piece.

Lean pork jerky... soo good!!! About 9 squares got me 25$ worth of lean pork jerky.

Really tasty jerky. I sampled the original pork, beef and lean pork jerky. I would have to say that the lean pork tasted the best from the three. The original pork jerky tasted bad... its a light brown colour, and it tasted like it was off... most likely due to the fat becoming rancid. Get the lean pork jerky! It was super tasty. I used the 16$ for 25$ Groupon. 25$ worth got me 9 squares of the lean pork jerky. Taxes are extra.

Once you walk into the plaza, this is all you smell. My nephew loves this place, and had so many slices. Great snack option!

Decor isn't really anything to write home about, it's not why we came here. The roti canai was super delicious. Roti was flaky and buttery, the curry nicely spiced and waiting to be sopped up by the roti. The Indonesian fried rice was recommended by the staff and it didn't disappoint. Char Kwei Teow was nice, the wok hei was very apparent here as well as the Kang Kung Belacan (water spinach). The hainanese chicken while tasty was very bony (menu said it had bones). Desserts were a perfect way to end the meal

There were a lot of ingredients: cabbage, carrot, choy sum, shrimp, chicken, fish cake & squid. The squid was quite rubbery. The fish cake was not springy. There was a lot of it, maybe to replicate the look even if not the taste & texture of pork. Apam balik was good: pretty thin & crispy, though stickier than average. The filling was quite generous & tasty but the peanuts were pale & tasted a bit raw. Ayam percik: the chicken itself was very tender & juicy & pretty tasty. The curry was rich but a little generic. Char kway teow was good: quite flavourful though it could have a stronger flavour. There was some wok hei. The fish cake was slightly springy & there was quite a bit of squid. There were some chives but they don't serve it on a banana leaf anymore. Fried squid in nonya sauce was pretty tasty & quite spicy. It'd be better with okra or eggplant, not peppers. There was quite a bit of dried shrimp in it (fried squid is stir fried & crispy squid deep fried). Chicken rice rice was pretty good: moist enough & quite gingery. The chicken flavour could be stronger. Chendol was pretty good with rich palm sugar & coconut milk. There were green worms & grass jelly but no red bean. Nonya kueh was pretty good: they looked dodge but tasted about right though they were a bit soft. They have 2 versions of Nasi Lemak. The more expensive version has curry chicken, keropok & peanuts unlike the economy version (which does come with a banana leaf, though). The rice was not very fragrant but the curry was very rich so the smell kind of made up for it. It was not super tasty but was above average & moist enough. The curry was tasty & very rich but had a lot of bone fragments & was annoying to eat; the majority of mouthfuls had at least 1 bone fragment. It is a bad idea to put the curry & peanuts in your mouth at the same time. Sambal had a lot of ikan bilis with some onion but little liquid. It was pretty good though if you like to put it as a paste on your rice you will be disappointed. Keropok was very crispy & pretty tasty.

This place is so affordable!…read more Went on a Wednesday night and there were multiple deals going on. There was one for $12 for certain dishes (one of which is their baked dishes) and comes with soup and dessert. Another option for $10 for certain dishes (chicken rice noodle) and comes with a bun, soup and milk tea. There were also some discounted seafood dinner sets. From their $12 meals, I got their curry brisket baked rice. The portions are huge here! The ratio of protein to carb is a bit lower, but didn't feel like they skimped out on the protein considering the price point. Their soup was tasty, the lai cha lacked tea flavour (but certainly not oversteeped), and the bun didn't seem fresh... Asked to pack up our food and the bill came. Completely forgot about the dessert :/, so not sure what that would have been. Service is standard and ambiance is usual loud chatter. Overall would recommend. Will try and come for afternoon tea. Some dishes start at $7, which is pretty cheap.

No idea what you guys are having to score this higher then 3 at best - whatever it is, please share…read more- because I clearly toke the wrong route. First off , the pricing is very attractive, and portions are very fair, especially with all the overpriced stuff out and about. Service wise, typical , nothing bad and far from outstanding. Place was very very busy - so the queue was a hot minute - very noisy, and found it pretty stuffy and tight. Pineapple bun with butter, very below average for me, Vancouver definitely does this better - bun itself had no identity or flavor, topping was crisp - butter had no sign of melting at all, and was kind of hard - resulting in a pretty nasty experience. Satay beef with rice , rice tasted like leftovers, had random cold hard bits, the satay was very runny , I do prefer a thicker satay sauce, this was more of a soup to me. Flavor was very underwhelming. This will be a hard skip for me on my next trip.

Not my first time at this restaurant, but it definitely has been over a decade since my last visit…read more Went for lunch today and it was a bit busier than I thought it would be for 1pm, which is great for the restaurant considering people are dining out less these days. We were seated right away and menus provided at the same time. There was a Lunch Special menu but we decided to order full portions from the regular menu. We were able to order right away and our drinks and ice water were brought out. Our food was brought out fairly quickly, all of it being hot. Roti is a must order item! The noodles were also very tasty with the shrimp not being overcooked. Fried chicken was crispy on the outside and nice and juicy inside. Service was attentive with the servers checking on us every so often and clearing empty plates away. When we were done eating, the server packed up our leftovers for us instead of just giving us containers. You can pay by card or cash, but just be advised that they do not accept $100 bills. Parking was pretty easy to get a spot that wasn't too far from the entrance.

We were quickly seated and the service was really attentive and appreciated. At around 6-630pm the restaurant began to quickly fill with couples and families. We had the chicken and shrimp Pad Thai and the Nasi Lemak Ayam Goring. We really enjoyed the fried chicken, coconut rice of the Nasi Lemak Ayam Goring, and the amount of spice in the sambal onion and anchovies. The noodles in the Pad Thai had a firm texture which we liked, but for me the sauce was a bit sweet. If coming to the restaurant from 6pm on a weekend, the parking lot is very busy and you could be circling for a parking spot and having to move around vehicles that are double parked for take-out orders.
