I haven't been back to this restaurant in 30+ years. Our friend recommended this restaurant because her mom likes the cozy atmosphere and reasonable prices. Stepping inside, you are brought back to the 90's, pink tables and teal chairs. The prices are super affordable, $10.50 for chicken mushrooms over spaghetti noodles is crazy cheap nowadays. There is no waitlist, you simply let the waiters know your party size and they will seat you. It's up to customers to work out who arrived first. You usually have to flag someone down to order and they will drop off the food and move on, unless you request anything else later, like the check. There are plenty of tables, but steps throughout the restaurant may make it difficult for elderly guests to navigate. On the plus side, cleanliness has improved post-pandemic, with remodeled restrooms and dining areas. Meeting my friend for lunch to discuss our agenda for our upcoming trip, I suggested we try this restaurant which another friend had recommended that I try. It's located on the edge of Chinatown on Pacific off Columbus. There's two dining areas, with right side room appearing to be an expansion into the store on the right. They are a breakfast lunch restaurant with a Hong Kong style menu with some Cantonese dishes. The menu is extensive with 147 items with a three item daily special. So make that 150 items. Since my friend is a regular here, he didn't have to look at the menu while I had to go through the choices. The Hong Kong style menu and specials of the day included soup of the day, rice or spaghetti with coffee, tea or milk tea. Being a cold, rainy day, I opted for curry pork chop with spaghetti with a coffee. First came the soup, which was cup of clam chowder. My entrée was served in a casserole dish, the pork chop was sliced into several pieces with potatoes, onions and slices of carrot in a curry sauce next to the spaghetti and some steamed broccoli. I spooned the curry sauce over my spaghetti. The dish was very good as the curry sauce had a good consistency and flavor. My friend ordered the baked shrimp and corn with cheese and rice daily special, which he enjoyed. If you're looking for Hong Kong style food, New Regent fits the bill. This is an old time Chinatown business, a survivor of a fading restaurant type. I believe it opened in the '80's and was one of many Chinese run restaurants offering American or western cuisine. The style here leaned towards the HK western cooking with a bit of a fusion of Asian food tendencies with instant ramen, macaroni soups, and sweet orange sauces and gravies. Regent is also the name of the prestigious 5-star hotel in Kowloon (Hong Kong) where they had a fleet of Rolls Royce's to cater to their guests. There used to be another location on Clement Street that doubled as a dance club weekends. Oh, the good old days. My friend mentioned dining here last summer and enjoying his meal here so it's long been on my "to try" list. Wanting to dine here on a slow Monday, my Yelp search told me they are closed Mondays. The next day, I decided to dine here for lunch around 11:30 am. The restaurant was about half full, impressive considering the two dining rooms were both open and had customers. I sat along the left wall of the main dining room and the waitress handed me their lunch menu. It is almost a book as I only got through half of the menu before ordering; the second half of the menu listed traditional Cantonese dishes. Menu, drink delivered, order taken, food served, check delivered, and go. There was a steady flow of diners coming and going besides several takeout customers. Four plus stars for the food and bumping up a half star since it was better than the newly open place that I recently reviewed. Was standing by the entrance waiting to be seated, the staff pretty much ignored us and the few groups behind.
