We had two little friends (fruit flies) dining with us. I kept on waving my napkins across our food. If you pick 3 dishes , it is $41.99 with soup and rice. We had beef stew, add $4. The green beans with XO sauce, add $1 or $3 dollar more. The garlic boy choy was perfectly crunchy. I'm giving four stars because all the dishes were yummy and had generous portions. No MSG detected. The lady who served us looked like a grandmother. This must be a family business, how else can a restaurant survive. If you pay in cash, then you get 4% off. We each got a lot of leftovers for lunch the next two days. They have been trying hard to have purple lanterns all around to decrease the little fruit flies so they are trying to mitigate the problem. Weeknights there were plenty of free parking. I haven't been back to dine in at D & A Cafe for over a decade and there is obviously new management from the looks of the renovation. Was talking to the owner Candy and she said the work was done during the pandemic when there were indoor dining restrictions and while the temporary parklet was outside for outdoor dining. Originally they did paint the interior black from what I recalled when I drove past the restaurant, as they were trying to appeal to the younger generation, but the elders and regulars always thought the restaurant was closed or a night club. There's a menu provided on the table where they write down your order or you can scan the QR code to order. Ordered the beef stew noodle soup, pork chop and onions over spaghetti, baked seafood over spaghetti. The beef stew noodle soup broth was too salty, but the meat was tender. Baked seafood over spaghetti had good sauce. Portions were fair for the price and they now take credit card and Venmo, so that was a plus. Dishes range from $10-15 and drinks from $3. Now my mind clicked after leaving, Candy used to be the waiter under the old management and it appears to have taken over the restaurant with her family. Their menu seems to have changed recently as my mom and I used to order their happy hour specials (dishes were priced between $4 to $8 depending on its size), however this was no longer an option. We opted for the 3 item combo which came out to $39.99 + tax for three very large entree dishes, a tub of rice, and 2 soups. The portion was very generous and the food tasted great as well. Best Hong Kong Milk Tea in the Bay Area I've been coming to D and A Cafe every day for over 10 years now , and it's my go-to spot for authentic Hong Kong-style milk tea. I feel like I'm back to Asia. After picking up my kids from school every weekdays , I stop by and the staff already know my order, especially the owner. She always brews it just right: strong tea with a smooth, silky texture, I love sweetened and unsweetened condensed milk that they add to the drink. Their iced lemon tea (dong ling cha) is excellent too. It's my wife's favorite. The way the owner crushes the lemon before making it gives the drink a fresh, balanced flavor, not too sweet, just perfect. This really is a hidden gem! One day my husband and I were looking for a place to eat after work and we stumbled upon this mom and pop shop. Prior reviews were the service was lacking, but the food is on point! I highly agree! The food is amazingly delicious and authentic. The service is just ok, but that is because the owners are busy talking. To each guest and the food comes out quick! They have this special deal where you can get 3 dishes for $39 or 4 dishes for $45. By far the best deal is the 4 dishes for $45. They also have happy hour between 3-5pm (not sure on the hours). All of the food was made fresh to order and just like how I remember eating it growing up! It is really like eating at my grand mother's house for a family gathering! We've been coming here for probably well over thirty years! This restaurant has been consistently fantastic every time we come here. I remember when we ordered items that they ran out of, the owner actually went to a supermarket and got the items to cook it for us. We normally order takeout but actually had time to din in this time. We ordered A new item for us, Singapore chow fun, every bit as good as the Singapore rice noodles but using fun instead. And a side note, they used the proper shirmps, the smaller ones not the big honkers most restaurants use nowadays to impress people that are not familiar with the proper size shrimp to use, the flavor profile is much different and does not overpower the dish using the proper size shrimps. The second dish we ordered was the curry beef stew pan fried noodles. I wasn't paying attention until my sis pointed out both dishes employed curry, whoopsie, I do love my curry. We've been coming here forever. It's walking distance from our place and back in our club days it was open hella late. Now I'm in bed after dinner lol, but still come here on a reg basis when at my place in the city. Food is authentic, fast and affordable. Parking is good on the street on off days/hours and you can often get lucky w a spot on weekends/dinnertimes. There are a few lots on side streets if you're driving. Bathrooms are available, haven't eaten in in a while, mostly take out, but I did have issues w there being no soap in the restrooms a lot of the times. Try not to think about that part. My immediate and extended family and friends all eat here all the time and never had gotten sick so I'm sure it's fine. Came here on a Friday night because I saw they have a special where you can get four dishes for $45 and it comes with rice and soup for up to four people. The restaurant itself is a mix of funky and traditional Chinese decor. The food was good and tasted as expected for Cantonese food, except the bean curd stick with pea leaves dish was lacking flavor. My favorite dish we had was the Peking spareribs. Now the reason for my two star rating: the entire time we were sitting inside the restaurant, there were flies flying around us and the food. And there were dead flies on the ledge next to the booth we were sitting at. It grossed me out so much, I would never eat here again. We were expecting affordable chinese food. They kept the Chinese name of the restaurant, however once you walked in, you would notice that ownership has changed and the ambiance was different. Been coming here for the past five years since moving to the area. Love the simplicity of the restaurant, with its pick 4 dishes option (highly recommend selecting the pick 4 or pick 3 items option). We typically get the combination tofu (has a mix of meat, seafood, and tofu, which goes great with rice), Peking spareribs, garlic snow pea tip, salt and pepper wings. The great part about the pick 3/4 option is that is comes with rice and soup. Most Chinese restaurants these days charge for a bowl of rice, which is annoying. Since this is more of a HK Cafe, I definitely prefer the more traditional HK / Cantonese fares at this restaurant. The choose your own 3 items, rice and soup continues to be superb value. Lately we have been venturing towards the more Western-style part of their menu, particularly the Portuguese-style baked rice/spaghetti type dishes. Service was very nice as well. There are many Chinese restaurants in SF and this one would be the best one I've had. The atmosphere is similar to Skyline Cafe in Daly City and also had the same pricing. I had the salt and pepper pork chop and it was really good. It matched the same one I had whenever I went to Skyline Cafe. I ordered a really common dish Baked Seafood and Beef over rice because that's my go-to in Cantonese/HK restaurants as a Cantonese. BUT this is one of worst baked dishes I've ever tried. The tasteless sauce on top, the crunchiness of shrimp and tenderness of beef all ruined the whole dish, the protein just tastes as fake as you could imagine. I didn't finish the food with a feeling that the chemical marinade would hurt my stomach. For the price, there are way more other options to support in the neighborhood. This is a typical Chinese restaurant so don't expect pristine dining; and customer service "ok". While we were dining, the workers pushed the trash bins right by our table to the front sidewalk. Not the best hygienic thing to do, but like I said typical real Chinese place. So if you're offended on things like that, probably not your place. The ginger lobster $27 and walnut prawns portions were small. They were only 1/2 containers worth. Total was $74 with tax. It came with free rice and soup. Normally we like coming to this D&A because they allow subbing the soup for a second giant bucket of rice but with Covid driving the price of things like rice up, that's no longer an option - boo! It's okay though! I'd rather they stay in business! My grandmother recently heard that D&A changed owners. I can't verify if that's actually true, but I can say that our last few to-go lunch and dinners here have been steadily getting better and better. Entrees have been generous and seemingly made with ever better quality ingredients. For example, our ribs today weren't just crispy pieces of batter...they actually had good meat on the bones and we're fried well. It's wasn't too oily or salty but did carry enough oomph to entice those taste buds. The same can be said about my favorite braised cod and tofu. It was very generous on both ingredients where we've definitely had some skimpy plates in the past. This combo comes to about $35 all said and done which is a deal tbh. Comes with a big container of rice, soup and your choice for 3 items on their extensive menu. I ordered over the phone and choose: salt and pepper chicken wings - counted 10pcs, a little dry and could taste that it was in the freezer for a while Mongolian beef - onions, peppers and sauce was tasty but beef was tough and bland Half a duck (+$2) extra - a little dry and was only item that took more than 10minutes to be ready. D&A & us go back decades when they had their 1st spot on Broadway nr. Stockton St. The food was fast, good & low priced. The place would be packed @ both spots. Seems not it's a new owner & ambiance have changed. We had a table of 8 & ordered the set menu w/6-8 items. The food was mediocre & portions lessen b/c all plates were cleaned off. It wasn't bad but it wouldn't be the 1st place I would think of going out to eat at. It's no longer packed like it used to & priced similar to other places nearby. This cafe has been around for a long time and is a family owned business. We come to get their set menu items which are such a great deal. 4 items for about over forty bucks plus including soup and generous rice serving. They also have a set menu for three items for a little over 33 bucks, such a steal! There is a large menu to choose from. We particularly like the peking spareribs and they are also known for their salt and pepper spareribs. Their son who helps out is very friendly and nice. They also have happy hour specials which my mom and I used to frequent when she was mobile. We would enjoy some small appetizers together like their fried tofu and congee as an afternoon snack. The baked pork chop over rice was great but the sauce could be a thicker. The beef chow fun could use more flavor. But the flounder fish was very tasty and crispy.
