We agreed that the best item was the chicken chow fun. It had a smoky flavor. It reminded me of Thai drunken noodles. They also had really good drinks. BEWARE! $80 + to go order including the Fish Filet over rice. Unfortunately, when I got home, the fish was mixed with TOFU. It does not say "fish and tofu over rice" . Now, there is a separate item on the menu that is Braised Tofu with Fish (I think an a la carte item) . I specifically did Not want this. So this is why I ordered the Fish Filet over Rice. I had pointed to that item (as I did each item I ordered) on the menu and the female attendant looked at it and repeated it aloud. I called them and they only said that I needed to tell them that did not want Tofu with this order because this item comes with tofu and they refused to credit me in any way. They said they would tell the owner. The rest of my order was fine. I was given water to drink as I waited, which was not very long. Solid Chinese food in Chinatown! So nostalgic! We went on a weekend night at around 6pm and got seated immediately. They don't seem to be too busy most of the time and the restaurant was half full only. We ordered the green beans, seafood noodles in the clay pot, and the iconic pork chop spaghetti. - Green beans 4/5: delicious and full of umami! - Seafood and noodles in a clay pot 4/5: my first time having it and I was blown away. The rice noodles are glossy and are coated with the thick sauce. The seafood is decent but I can tell that it's frozen seafood. Overall, it was good and the noodles definitely stand out as the star - Pork chop spaghetti 5/5: Yum! It might also just be nostalgic to me and the execution is pretty close to what I've had as a kid. The tomato sauce is thick and sweet. Most Hong Kong style spaghetti are on the sweeter side. The noodles are decent, nothing surprising. The pork chop pairs really well with the cheese and the tomato sauce. Overall this place is representative of what a Hong Kong cafe is like. I have been experimenting with claypot rice dishes at home and wanted to try a restaurant version, G&Y had been recommended by a guy at the old school Chinese charcuterie place down the hill so when I found they had clay pot it was an easy choice. I ordered the combination (currently $14.50) which includes Chinese sausage and bacon and some nice Chinese broccoli plus other stuff. It hit the spot. Tender toppings, crispy rice on the bottom. The sauce was served on the side rather than drizzled on during cooking but I understand some folks may prefer it that way. G&Y has a huge menu for such a small place. I should note my clay pot rice took a while to serve which is as it should be if it's cooked fresh. Lots of other choices in Chinese and western dishes. Ambience? Fuggedablut it. HK cafes are a norm in my life and I've gone to my fair share of them. They can really be hit or miss depending on location and what you order. To be completely honest I wasn't blown away by this spot but everything was decent enough to satisfy my cravings and that accounts for something. Just like your typical HK cafe service is quick despite how busy it is. And the day I went was super busy with all the tables filled, people waiting for seats, and others picking up to go orders. Drinks are really just okay but we ordered the beef chow fun and it was so tasty and definitely needed after a night of fun. I recommend grabbing a carb dish from here and maybe dim sum from another spot in Chinatown so you can put together the perfect meal. read more

The main dish, however, was quite large. I ordered it over rice instead of spaghetti, but the pork chop in it was cooked well. The sauce was a little underseasoned (maybe on purpose? I haven't had the dish before), but tasted great after I adjusted it. The nice thing is that there is certainly a lot of sauces/spices that you can grab on the counter to adjust/fix your food! I think I'm not personally all that likely to come back here on my own, though my friend is a regular so I might be back anyway. Was on my first trip to SF and was wondering around Chinatown with my family when we decided to pop in for lunch. Felt bolstered by the presence of several groups of older Chinese folks eating. Heads up that they will "stack" tables during rushes, meaning you may be asked to share your table with other customers. We ordered a clay pot rice, baked seafood spaghetti, and chicken wings. Food was fine but not great. The clay pot rice didn't have a lot of crispy rice, and most of the rice was pretty soggy and flavorless. The meat also had a lot of bones, making it hard to eat. The baked seafood spaghetti was fine but lacked sauce. The chicken wings were probably the best item we got. Because they were so busy, our meal was really lackluster. After ordering, we sat at our completely empty table for 25+ minutes without silverware or even water. We tried flagging someone down for water but everyone was busy. The first item to arrive was actually our clay pot rice, but we didn't have any bowls, so we had to flag someone down to bring us bowls before we could begin eating. Our chicken wings were the last item to arrive even though they were supposed to be our appetizer. Our drinks also took forever to come out. We were easily sitting at our table eating for 45 minutes before our drinks came out (and again, no water the entire meal). All the tables around us seemed frustrated/like they were waiting for something as well, whether it was placing their order, getting silverware/plates/water, getting the bill, etc. A lot of people were also getting fed up of waiting and just walking to the counter to get their own sauce, silverware, etc. Lastly, we paid in cash, and when our server brought our change back to us, she mumbled something about requiring at minimum 10% tip before putting our money down. Not sure exactly what she said and also didn't appreciate it (my guess is she was worried we weren't going to tip beyond the change). Sometimes you just need to satisfy a morning carb craving and nothing does that better than soy sauce stir fried noodles (豉油王炒麵 / sze yau wong chow meen) with a side of congee. G&Y is one of the few places left that offers this, and it does the job. The place could use regular deep cleans, but it's a few steps above VIP cafe and New Lun Ting. Also pictured is condensed milk toast (lai jerng doh) made with two slices of toast slathered with peanut butter and condensed milk in the middle. A great cafe to grab a quick and inexpensive bite when strolling around Chinatown. This is one of the places where the food arrives fast but don't expect there to be much service. We had to keep waving the waiters down to clean the water, order, get check, etc. This is typical for places in Chinatown so we didnt mind. We weren't expecting it to get busy so fast after we got a table around noon on Saturday. We got the wonton soup and the seafood baked spaghetti. We usually don't see baked spaghetti dishes in Chinese restaurants but this place is more Hong Kong style. The wonton soup was nice and warm, perfect for the cold weather. It also felt pretty light and was soothing. The spaghetti on the other hand, was much heavier. It was mostly a cream sauce with many spaghetti noodles and only a few bits of seafood on top. This wasn't as delicious as it looked but it was still fun to try. Next time, we might stick to the more traditional Chinese dishes. Very solid Hong Kong style cafe! The Sam See Fried Rice Noodle was my favorite. The noodles were slightly thicker than what I traditionally see but still incredibly flavorful and tasty. A very popular Hong Kong style cafe that may have a wait during the busiest times and might seat you with a stranger. Food is very reasonably priced for San Francisco, meaning you could probably leave quite satisfied spending $20 or less. Lots of interesting menu items to explore... or just point at someone else's dish that looks interesting. Original Milk Tea: You can see a little bit of the sweetened condensed milk running down the sides. Even more on the bottom, if you don't stir vigorously. It was sufficiently milky and sweet enough. Iced Original Milk Tea: Large glass so felt like there was milk tea here, even after factoring in the ice. While it was refreshing, didn't give the diner feel of a nice warm cup. French Toast: A very eggy take on French toast. A bit too savory naked, but I did like dipping into the sweet syrup on the side. Satay Pepper Chicken Wing: These were so crispy! No fatty bits or limp skin, so maybe they twice-fried it like Korean-style? Loved the subtle flavor of salt, fried garlic and chilis. Macaroni w/ Ham: It was like they took wonton soup broth, loaded in macaroni and put in a bunch of slices of ham. Felt like something a busy parent might throw together for a hungry toddler with limited food preferences. But I was loving it, hit all the right notes for me. Combo Clay Pot Rice: They lied. it's not a clay pot, it's a metal pot. Though it's a good lie, since I think the metal pot does a better job crisping the rice on the bottom. Loved all the various meats in the combo, since it provided a nice variety. The Chinese bacon was especially delicious. The Chinese sausage was ok, but very intense, so needed to balance it out with the greens. It's nice they give you the sauce on the side, so you can pour on what you like. Love the dramatic sizzling and steaming when you first pour it on. House Special Pan Fried Rice Noodle: Love the texture contrast here. The top is covered in crispy triangles made up from noodles. It's pretty cool that one side is crispy and one side is noodle-y. Then underneath that is a bunch of various meat bits, some onions and highly sauced noodles. While touring Chinatown we randomly stumbled upon this hole-in-the-wall, mom-and-pop spot serving Hong Kong-style food--and it definitely had that hole-in-the-wall vibe. The place felt authentic and low-key, with a simple setup and a no-frills atmosphere. It seemed to cater slightly to locals, as there were quite a few dining in and the afternoon specials were listed only in Chinese. That said, the main menu was in both Chinese and English. Prices were mid-range. Everything tasted about as expected. I ordered the wonton soup myself, which came with about six dumplings and two pieces of bok choy. The flavor was standard--nothing surprising. When I split my last dumpling to share, I noticed it was very pink inside. Around the same time, the waitress came by to ask if we could pay early, and she happened to notice the dumpling. She immediately insisted on bringing a fresh batch and brought out three more. We split those to check, and they were albeit better, but still slightly pink. I'm all for supporting mom-and-pop shops, and this might've just been a one-off situation. Their baked pork chop with rice/spaghetti is also a Hong Kong dish and I opted for the rice. It was so fragrant and came out piping hot. Mongolian beef was yummy! We were seated right when we came in around 5 pm on a Saturday.
