New Shoes Soft Serve has been generating a lot of buzz since opening in downtown Homewood, so after church on Sunday we decided to see what all the excitement was about. The shop is clean, bright, and has a fun modern aesthetic. However, the space is tight as a cheap suit. Once a few customers came in, it quickly felt cramped. I ordered the Brownie Batter soft serve in a cup with the Brown Butter & Sea Salt Shell and Brittle Crumbs. My wife ordered the Brownie Batter with the Cookie Butter Shell and Dulce de Leche. On paper, both combinations sounded outstanding. Unfortunately, neither delivered. The soft serve was creamy, but none of the individual flavors stood out, and the toppings failed to elevate the dessert. The Brown Butter & Sea Salt shell lacked the rich buttery flavor I expected, and the brittle crumbs didn't add much beyond a little crunch. My wife's Cookie Butter shell and Dulce de Leche also blended into the background rather than creating distinct layers of flavor. Instead of working together, the combinations were surprisingly forgettable. The biggest issue is value. At $8 per cup, it's hard to justify the experience. Honestly, a pint of Ben & Jerry's or Häagen-Dazs costs less and delivers far more flavor. Even Dairy Queen offers a better value with larger portions and desserts that leave a stronger impression. Their spoons CHANGE COLOR! The strawberry pretzel icecream salad was good but I would get something else next time. I feel like this tasted very standard to other ice cream places. However, the brown butter dipper cone with flaky salt was something SPECIAL. Like nothing I'd ever tasted and not like you can get just anywhere. The line was long but moved relatively quickly. You do have to stand and wait outside though so bear that in mind. And it's downtown Homewood so I don't really have to go into what a nightmare that is. First time here and it did not disappoint. The soft serve is fresh and you can tell. The strawberries pretty sweet but very good! The pretzel crumble was salty and crunchy! A perfect blend with the sweet strawberry syrup. I think the only thing that could make it better is freeze dried strawberries inside the pretzel crumble! Delicious my husband and I came by Friday afternoon for a sweet treat and absolutely loved it! He got the cookie butter topping with sweet cream and brownie swirl soft serve. The shop is small, but we were easily able to maneuver around with other folks waiting for their orders to be completed and for us to place ours. My mom and I came a couple days after their official opening - I think there was a line out the door for several days straight! This spot has great energy. Lots of kids, young parents, a very neighborhood vibe. Great location, too. Right on the main drag in Homewood. Now, to the bread and BUTTER. The vanilla cone dipped in brown butter is a MUST. TRY. This place was packed but the line moved fast. The inside of the store is pretty small so don't be scared of a line. I really appreciated how the employees knew exactly what to do for a gluten allergy. They were super helpful. And the brownie batter flavor IS gluten free which is nice because I'm not a vanilla fan They were out of the mango sticky rice flavor my friend wanted so she was sad about that I got a chocolate cup with chocolate shell and Dulce de leche. It was $8.80 for a pretty small cup. I honestly was not a fan. It didn't have much sweetness to it but was really rich. Tasted like coconut kinda. Even though the portion was small - ish for the price I couldn't finish it because it was so rich. It wasn't a typical ice cream experience but I could see how people like this place. I often hoped that Homewood would open an ice cream shop in that area. I'm definitely pleased! New shoes sits on a perfect corner, but the inside is very small. You are able to try samples which made my decision pretty hard because I loved the blueberry and mango flavors. I decided to get the Dubai Cup from their menu because it was seasonal. I wasn't a fan of that specific cup because it was very chocolate heavy and not as much pistachio flavor as I hoped. The girls behind the counter were so sweet and helpful. New shoes has taken homewood over by storm so i had to check it out myself. was super excited to try this place out. this is what i ordered: Mango sticky rice: while tasty with that classic rich mango flavor, it doesn't really taste much like authentic mango sticky rice. the ube doesn't complement the mango and personally would've enjoyed a coconut cream instead. Classic: enjoyed this one more as ratio of the flavors are perfectly balanced and the sweet cream base allows the chocolate and brownie to be star of the show. Giving it 4 stars because I enjoyed it but did not think the mango sticky rice resembled the dish it was trying to emulate. New Shoes just opened and when I came at 8:30 on a Tuesday night there was a line halfway down the block! I can't imagine how busy it gets on weekends. I had really high hopes for this place because we got a taste of Will Drake's ice cream creations at hero donuts briefly. For a short time they served life changing frozen custard that would also come in shape of a nitro coffee float. It was addictive and amazing. I sadly saw there would be no frozen custard at new shoes but hoped the other ice cream would be just as good. I thought it was good but nothing amazing, and not worth the price tag or wait. The chocolate shell in my Dubai was very nice. There should have been more pistachio flavor and more kadayif. The pistachio paste was too sweet and didn't taste like pistachio. I think this would've have been tastier with a pistachio flavor ice cream because vanilla has nothing to do with Dubai chocolate. Overall I'm glad new shoes is here in Homewood but not sure if I care enough about it to go back. My suggestion would be to please bring back the frozen custard and nitro floats! read more
