    Strawberry pretzel

First time here and it did not disappoint. The soft serve is fresh and you can tell. The strawberries pretty sweet but very good! The pretzel crumble was salty and crunchy! A perfect blend with the sweet strawberry syrup. I think the only thing that could make it better is freeze dried strawberries inside the pretzel crumble! The spoons are awesome (changes color with temperature). Small corner shop but it works! The branding sounds like a shoe store so glad my friend I went with knew about it because I wouldn't think this was an ice cream place from the name of the soft serve ice cream shop. Friendly staff. Clean shop!

New Shoes Soft Serveis a great place for soft serve ice cream if you are in the Homewood, Alabama area. It is not a big location, but it was bright and cheerful. The service was extremely friendly. I went with the Dubai, which was simply incredible. I would definitely recommend a visit to New Shoes Soft Serve.

Fantastic! And what a hole in the market??? The only other place I can think to get soft serve is a fast food restaurant! My mom and I came a couple days after their official opening - I think there was a line out the door for several days straight! This spot has great energy. Lots of kids, young parents, a very neighborhood vibe. Great location, too. Right on the main drag in Homewood. Now, to the bread and BUTTER. The vanilla cone dipped in brown butter is a MUST. TRY. I think they're planning on a monthly menu of specialties. My mom had the dubai, which looked incredible. I had the mango sticky rice which was also outstanding. The ice cream is delicious, smooth, light, flavorful. I'll be back!

This place was packed but the line moved fast. The inside of the store is pretty small so don't be scared of a line. I really appreciated how the employees knew exactly what to do for a gluten allergy. They were super helpful. And the brownie batter flavor IS gluten free which is nice because I'm not a vanilla fan They were out of the mango sticky rice flavor my friend wanted so she was sad about that I got a chocolate cup with chocolate shell and Dulce de leche. It was $8.80 for a pretty small cup. I honestly was not a fan. It didn't have much sweetness to it but was really rich. Tasted like coconut kinda. Even though the portion was small - ish for the price I couldn't finish it because it was so rich. It wasn't a typical ice cream experience but I could see how people like this place. This was a true 3 star experience for me and I wouldn't come back but I feel like 3 stars is low simply for personal preference so I give 4

New Shoes is the perfect addition to Birmingham this summer season! They have different flavors of soft-serve, toppings, and dunking options. I got the premade Dubai chocolate sundae and it was delicious. They didn't skimp out on the pistachio at all, it was perfect! There was a bit of a line when I got there but it moved quickly. It is takeout with a bench outside to sit at. I'm excited to go back and try more flavors.

It took a couple different visits before we officially got to try one of the hottest spots in Bham right now. There were evenings we went by New Shoes and the line stretched forever, we heard people were waiting up to 50 minutes. I have been a fan of Wil Drake and Hero Doughnuts so I knew his new soft serve concept would not disappoint. We got a low top cone dipped in the browned butter and maldon and a cup of vanilla sweet cream with fruity pebbles. I had no idea what maldon was but it's just salt. It made the brown butter flavor pop. The vanilla soft serve with fruity people's was just as good. The ice cream is soft and pillowy like a soft serve should be.

I often hoped that Homewood would open an ice cream shop in that area. I'm definitely pleased! New shoes sits on a perfect corner, but the inside is very small. You are able to try samples which made my decision pretty hard because I loved the blueberry and mango flavors. I decided to get the Dubai Cup from their menu because it was seasonal. I wasn't a fan of that specific cup because it was very chocolate heavy and not as much pistachio flavor as I hoped. The girls behind the counter were so sweet and helpful. I'll definitely be back but I'll design my own for sure!

Such a fun new addition to Homewood. Be ready to wait in line, but it's worth the wait! They have a great variety of flavors and toppings for all ages. Perfect for a sweet treat after dinner or a Saturday afternoon pick-me-up.

Has quickly become my favorite spot in Birmingham!! Seriously the flavor combinations are unlike anything I've ever tried, the quality is amazing. And THEY HAVE DAIRY FREE OPTIONS!!! There may be a long line, but it's SO worth it.

The new hotspot in Homewood! With a line all the way down the block, this soft serve is worth waiting for! I tried the brownie batter ice cream with the browned butter + Maldon dip with peanut brittle crumbs. Let me say, the butter dip MADE this treat! I don't think you can beat that combo, but I'll definitely be back soon to try!

Soft serve the best I've ever had!!! I got birthday cake soft serve with the browned butter and maldon sea salt shell. Incredible.

New Shoes just opened and when I came at 8:30 on a Tuesday night there was a line halfway down the block! I can't imagine how busy it gets on weekends. I had really high hopes for this place because we got a taste of Will Drake's ice cream creations at hero donuts briefly. For a short time they served life changing frozen custard that would also come in shape of a nitro coffee float. It was addictive and amazing. I sadly saw there would be no frozen custard at new shoes but hoped the other ice cream would be just as good. I thought it was good but nothing amazing, and not worth the price tag or wait. The chocolate shell in my Dubai was very nice. There should have been more pistachio flavor and more kadayif. The pistachio paste was too sweet and didn't taste like pistachio. I think this would've have been tastier with a pistachio flavor ice cream because vanilla has nothing to do with Dubai chocolate. Overall I'm glad new shoes is here in Homewood but not sure if I care enough about it to go back. My suggestion would be to please bring back the frozen custard and nitro floats!

Unique flavors, classic flavors, the smell of fresh waffle cones inside. Big Spoon does a ton of business, as they should. The location here in Avondale is great, but not super walkable from any really good restaurants. I would love to see them open another spot on 2nd Ave. I had the strawberry tres leches in a waffle cone and it was delicious. I appreciate the care and craft that went into making sure every bit down to the bottom of the cone had ice cream in it. 10/10.

The Sweet and the Absurd: A Birmingham Creamery's Baffling Economics…read moreTo step into Big Spoon Creamery in Birmingham is to subject oneself to a masterclass in both artisanal delight and bureaucratic absurdity. On my visits--a pilgrimage undertaken reliably every month and a half--the front-line staff have never been anything short of exemplary. They are the cheerful stewards of a deeply baffling system, executing their duties with a warmth that almost distracts you from the institutional quirks around them. I say "institutional" because the management themselves are entirely phantom. They are never seen on the floor. Perhaps this is a calculated evasion; if they were ever present, they would surely have to field a relentless, exasperated inquisition regarding the tragic and ongoing absence of their finest creation: the "Magic City." Why an ice cream parlor would willingly suppress its undisputed masterpiece remains an enduring mystery. Even if the economics of its ingredients demanded a premium surcharge, "Magic City" ought to be enshrined as an immovable staple on the menu. Instead, the menu is a restless, ever-shifting carousel. I concede that a relentless churn of novelty is a virtue to a certain type of customer, but the soul of a great neighborhood institution relies on the comforting reliability of a few anchor flavors. At Big Spoon, just as you develop an affection for a flavor, it vanishes into the ether. Then, we must examine the rewards program, an endeavor so poorly conceived it borders on the avant-garde. The mathematics are punishingly flat: one point per order, regardless of whether the patron spends a single dollar or one hundred. The rational response to such a broken incentive structure is, naturally, to weaponize the system. To extract any genuine value, the savvy customer is forced into a theatrical display of micro-transactions, paying for each scoop separately. It is a loophole that needlessly punishes the very staff who make the establishment shine, forcing them to run the register three or four times for a single family's dessert. Finally, there is the creamery's bizarre pricing taxonomy. A close study of the board reveals an accidental arbitrage opportunity: the customer is objectively better off purchasing two distinct pints of ice cream and two empty waffle cones to assemble on their own time, rather than engaging in the straightforward, intended transaction of ordering ice cream scooped directly into a cone. Whoever is pulling the levers behind the curtain at Big Spoon clearly fancies themselves a clever operator, disrupting the traditional ice cream parlor model with dynamic menus and gamified loyalty. But in their pursuit of perpetual novelty and labyrinthine economics, they have embodied the old proverb perfectly: they are entirely too clever by half.
