Durga, a charming petite lady, works on Saturdays and I have been having my eyebrows threaded and upper lip waxed for several years. While the other workers are also good, I find Durga to be particularly gentle as I find threading painful at times. I often squirm sideways while being threaded and tell Durga that no one is going to look at me with a magnifying glass. Trying not to laugh, she then gently tells me that she needs to do a good job so that I will look pretty. Facials, waxing and other skin care treatments are also offered but I only get the bare minimum. Reasonably priced, this threading salon is conveniently located on First Avenue between 14th & 15th Streets and is clean. A restroom is located in the back. So I'm usually very particular about not doing certain things at certain places. And what I mean by that is I would never go to a fast food place and order a salad (though I hear Wendy's does have a good one!), it's just not for me. So when I came in here for a simple lower arm wax, and the lady pushed the $20 facial I just knew I should have said no. I just don't know what happened to me in that moment of "yes" lol. But let me just tell you all, that this place should for sure stick to waxing and threading brows (which I can't personally vouch for). A facial from here is a very strong pass. I will always remember this facial because it was just nonsense. Picking up a phone to talk before touching my face with your bare hands? should never happen. Product within containers with no label? should never happen. Smearing product all over my face, including my eyes? should never happen. Wiping away product with an abrasive paper towel? should never happen. A bunch of things I don't know about because my eyes were closed? should never happen. The facial I said yes to? Sammy is an amazing kind, beautiful & amazing soul who I've known for almost 5 years... maybe more, maybe less. Sammy (Sunday's only) is the only person I trust with my eyebrows and waxing needs. She's very kind, patient, understanding, caring & not pressuring me into anything I don't want to do, don't need to do... I always go to her once a month for my eyebrows and full face, and every few months for legs, underarm & full arm waxing. Her waxing skills are beyond belief and I can't believe how fast everything goes by the time we start and end! I always look forward to walking in ugly, and leaving beautiful... I always can't wait to see Sammy, sometimes she is Thursday's as well but her schedule gets changed constantly. Sunday's I make time for her, she's worth the trip! I really don't get why everyone's so mean with reviews. This is my cheap go-to eyebrow threading location. Yeah, the workers talk during your threading. Yeah, they don't really care about service here. But do you really come to a $5 eyebrow threading location for service? 'Cause I sure don't. For those who do, perhaps spring those extra dollars for some better service. They do a standard job here. Whenever I get lazy to do my own eyebrows, I come here for threading. I went to a brow bar before and it was more expensive (a lot), time consuming and I hated the result so much I had to tell them to fix it right away. I walked into this place on a whim while waiting for my prescriptions to be filled at Duane Reade. I asked for an eyebrow and upper lip wax, and the technician seemed to understand. However, she threaded my eyebrows anyway! I let her go ahead with that but reiterated that I wanted my lip to be waxed, not threaded. She did the fastest wax I've ever had (fairly painful too) AND THEN PROCEEDED TO THREAD MY LIP. After I had explicitly asked her not to. The thread broke twice while she was doing my eyebrows, and the two women working spoke really loudly the entire time. The technician did a really bad job--she trimmed my eyebrows (without asking) and now they're weirdly tuftlike. There are random strays sticking out between my brows and they look like shit. But the worst part was when I went to go get my wallet and found a (presumably used) thread ON my bag. There were threads stuck against the wall, on the floor, and littered all over the sidewalk outside. Nope. Never again. Pros: -Cheap ($9 for eyebrow and lip. I gave a $2 tip but in hindsight I have no idea why.) -Fast (though I'm not sure if this is actually a pro) read more

Come here fairly regularly because it's cheap - quality isn't great, no one that I've had work on my eyebrows is that attentive. They leave a bunch of hairs on my face still, it's like the majority of them aren't detail oriented enough to notice that they're not doing a thorough job. My skin gets cuts nearly every time I come here and on my last visit, they made one eyebrow way thinner than the other. Typically they do a decent job especially for $5; but the chunk missing from the end of my right eyebrow was not worth it and I should've just went to somewhere better any as they are extremely unprofessional at this eyebrow location. I randomly stumbled upon this shop after getting my nails done. When I saw the price list, I was excited to see that it offered herbal facials for the grand price of $30 and that they also did threading for $5. So in I went to inquire about their services. The lady working there today promised me that her facials were excellent and that she would make sure that she would exfoliate my skin and do extractions. She also persuaded me to upgrade to the $35 special anti-acne herbal facial. Because she seemed so genuinely enthusiastic about her special facials, I decided to go ahead and get one done. I immediately regretted my decision when I realized that she didn't really know how to give facials. Basically, different, smelly creams were applied to my face, after which she basically scrubbed and slapped my face. She then put the steamer on high heat and placed it thisclose to my face, making it difficult for me to breath. In the middle of my treatment, other people went inside the shop. She then decided to stop treating me to help two or three other customers. This would've been fine had she been gone for, say, ten minutes while the mask was resting but she did this twice, and basically disappeared for two *fifteen minute* stretches, making me wonder whether she had forgotten about me altogether. When she finally came back the second time, I think she felt rushed because there were other customers waiting for her, so she maybe did a minute's worth of extractions and neglected the 'massage' that she promised came with the facial. Because I'm a sucker, I also thought it would be a good idea to get my eyebrows threaded. Yelpers, please note that I've been getting my eyebrows threaded for over a decade now, at least once a month. (You do the math). Never before have I experienced the most excruciating pain possible. I could feel every single eyebrow hair being yanked off and also felt that she was threading my forehead raw. After she was done, I realized that said pain occurred because she literally RIPPED SOME SKIN OFF MY FOREHEAD. This meant that when I sat up, I saw that a small patch of skin below my eyebrow was bleeding. Being paranoid, I really hope that this is just a wound and not a permanent scar. I visibly blanched when I saw what happened and got tissues to blot the bleeding. Rather than apologizing, the woman decided to chastise me for not holding my forehead taut. She also told me "not to worry" because she was "sure" that my bleeding would disappear. This teaches me that sometimes, price isn't really the most important factor in one's decision-making process. I was lured in by what I thought was a good deal and, well, fared badly. read more

To be honest, the woman who was crying before I came into the store did my eyebrows really, really well. I would suggest going during the work day (the redness is barely noticeable and I have very sensitive skin) as there can be a line during peak hours. She is excellent; very nice polite and does fabulous job. However, I have made a mistake or coming in once or twice before during the weekdays and it was terrible experience. This place is fairly new it's been open for a month when I went I got a great deal from groupon....when I first got there I was a little creeped out this place is super small and no work stations ... Then this lady came and took me down stairs 2 this little creepy room... Now I'm freaked out!! Like am I really doing all this for a $20 Brazilian wax??? Yes !! It was great , it probably was the best one I've had so far this lady got every single hair!!!! I was super smooth!! O yea :-)! How ever the customer service skills were weak.. went there for a facial and waxing. It was some kind of "grand opening" promotion I think. Don't remember the lady who did my work as I was in a dark room for most of the time. My facial began with someone - young petite Indian girl - who practically didn't know was she was doing. she takes the scrub and cleansing together to start my facial! the way she started massaging, I had to stop her and asked for the other girl upstairs - get this, I am never rude to anyone! The other girl came down and asked me what happened! when I told her she goes- she is in training! Why would you give a new customer someone who is not yet trained! ain't that recipe for disaster! I specifically asked the lady to do a clean up and not to touch certain area... since she rush me to sit on the chair and not even listen to my instruction. For eyebrow threading: I've been going to the girl who works here on Sundays and she's kind, listens to what you want, and is great! DON'T GO ON SATURDAYS! The girls are rude (one yelled at me and they talk to each other while there are customers in there they are serving), they don't do it right (I got bumps from the pain because the girl was pulling too hard on my skin), and they made my eyebrows twice into a thin, uneven, weird ass shape. read more

I hate anything near my eyes - it makes me anxious. I have plucked my eyebrows myself since 8th grade. But, my brows were starting to get sparse from being thin, then thick, then medium thickness, back to thick, then thin again... I thought, I'll try threading, since my skin is very sensitive, and basically all wax has some reaction from me. I stumbled upon this place & gave it a try. I do not need a nice exterior to bring me in, or one to keep me coming back. This is a place that offers a service, is clean, is nice & does a great job. No need for extra pampering with threading in my book. I have been going here since Fall 2012, and my brows (when I don't pluck myself in between - habit) look great! My brows are more even, more prominent & I feel comfortable sporting my non filled in brows on days without makeup on. You should be very clear from the beginning if it is 1) your first time & 2) ask for very specific looking brows. If you like to have hair (not) taken from above the brow - say so. If you want the arch to be at x mark - say so. If they are threading in a way you dislike - say so. A brow can be easily corrected - I have done it here - if you communicate what you want. Seems like this place has a bad rap from the few bad reviews. I've been consistently coming here for years actually and make an effort to come see Samy every Sunday. I'd give this place 5 stars if somehow Samy can be there 5 days a week instead of 1. Each time I end up anywhere else because I missed my one chance a week to see Samy, my brows get messed up and Samy is the only one who can fix it. read more

I have become fond of this place. Saminah and Dolly are my favorites there. Unlike some of the other places, here they actually take time to listen to your request and try to make you feel comfortable. I have been getting my eyebrows threaded for 15 years and these ladies know exactlly how to form a nice arch and they have actually fixed my eyebrows over the last 2 months as mine were not aligned due to other places not paying attention to the shape. I would highly recommend this place for their service and their prices are very reasonable as well. read more
