1 star, the massage was amazing. The bad, you're expected to tip a certain amount, and the staff lets you know if you tipped too little. We got a 90min massage, and were expected to tip $20 each. Written on the walls in the room state gratuity appreciated. That doesn't mean you get to demand a certain amount for the service. When i brought that up I was able to tip what i wanted. Which should have been $0 considering the pushyness. Will not return. read more

I am a long time, regular customer of Newark Excellent Massage and this place is a diamond in the rough. Hidden away less than a mile from 880, west on Thornton Ave, you have to keep an eye out for the sign - 6170 Thornton Ave. Once you pass the Bank of America and cross Newark Ave, you take a U-turn at the next left and head back about half a block. I always look for the yellow hydrant. The staff is very professional and the rates are very good. Yelp gives it $$ but for $45 for a full hour, this is a bargain; I've seen other places charging $60 and up. It is not a spa with lots of frills, just basic massage therapy. I'd recommend asking for deep tissue if you want the knots worked out or if you prefer to relax, ask for it - a "relaxing" massage. I've had both. I've read reviews of people who have a hard time dealing with non-native English speakers; this usually indicates they are from China and have the Chinese massage approach. I got my first Chinese massage in Beijing several years ago, and the staff has brought some of these techniques with them. But all of the masseuses do speak enough English to get by; just don't expect a chat session unless you can speak Mandarin. Friday - Sunday, the receptionist, Amy, is very fluent and can help you let your masseuse know what type massage you want. Now, to the current staff - Cindy - a former resident of Shanghai, she can give all types of massage and has a knack for finding those trigger points. If she feels a problem area, she will focus on it. Kelly - a recent addition to the staff that I've only had the pleasure of using once. She certainly did a great job with my relaxing massage. Lily - She is very popular and I try to get her at least once a month; my wife has chronic issues with her neck and shoulder and Lily is one of her favorites, too. Lily is originally from Beijing and has worked on pain in the leg I broke several years ago. Tipping is mandatory. When you get a decent massage, $10 is paltry IMHO. $20 for an hour if it is super. And if it's not super, tip her anyway and kindly tell Amy how it could be better. Finally - this is NOT, I repeat, NOT a "happy ending" establishment. Horrible! She stresses me out more than removing stress. First of all, she didn't introduce herself, then started in as deep tissue massage. I came in sore, so that definitely sent me through the roof. After I asked her to soften up and that I do not want a deep tissue massage, she then barely applied any pressure. Pretty good place if you want a quick massage. Came here with a friend and I thought that it was weird that they wanted us to pay first, but I guess they had some shady customers never paid. Paid $45 for an hour massage. At first I thought that i was going to just get a back massage, but i actually a full body massage. Rude people and dirty place. I've been here a few times and things are generally pretty bad when it comes to service. Don't be surprised to find candy wrappers on the counter, a dirty carpet, a fish tank that hasn't been cleaned in years, and no one at the front desk. Even if you ring the small bell no one comes to the front. When they do come to the front they are generally annoyed by you being there. If you ask when the next availability is they look at you somewhat confused, tell you to call to get an appointment, and then disappear into the back room. Meanwhile there is an available girl in the back room watching TV and collecting her hourly wage without working. The name is somewhat amusing. The sign should read "Newark Excellent Massage" we like to rub people the wrong way. read more

It's not excellent, it's rarely medium massage, the facilities and equipment are medium, the staff doesn't speak English at all. The massage was OK. But it's not cool to ASK for the tip at the beginning, when you are paying in advance for the treatment, and than be surprise when it's only 10$. (More than 20%!). read more

I read the Yelp reviews and decided to try this place out. They had an opening immediately and so I went. The place was decent. But after my massage, my masseuse , April, went crazy. She dint like the 15% tip I gave her and so she started yelling and screaming. I was stunned. I am a good tipper and never leave less than 20% usually. But with her, I felt 15% was enough. But apparently she dint agree and started yelling at me!!! First of all gratuity is supposed to be optional!!!!! The irony of it was , they have a note saying, "Gratuity is appreciated and graciously accepted"!!!! Apparently they cant read English! I am NEVER going back there! Was a harrowing experience! I made an appointment last week and went in, since for 1/2 hour it was $35 and I thought I would try it out. When I got in I was surprised Mia wanted me to pay up front. I was paying by credit card and she asked me how much tip she should write in so told her $5. She gave me a disapproving look. I was rather surprised and told her I haven't even had the massage yet and asked her how much tip she was expecting for 1/2 hour? I agreed to pay only $35 in credit card and tip later thinking if the massage is great I will give a little higher tip. She showed me into the room. Before I got into the bed, I noticed the horrible smell coming from the bed area. I was wondering when the sheets had been cleaned last. The massage was O.K. Afterwards I asked her to give me change for a $10 bill. She purposely brought me two $5 bills so I could tip her $10. I told her I need 5 ones. She curtly asked me how much I planned to tip her, and I told her $8 (which I shouldn't have considering the rude service), so she took the $5 and brought me two one dollar bills back and was rather passive-aggressive. I will never go back here to get a massage. I don't want to be bullied into giving a higher tip than I want to for a mediocre massage and dirty surroundings. read more

Was looking for a good massage place on yelp as my mom was having lots of back pain and needed a massage. I know my mother and she is super picky about the pressure and the place. This place had decent reviews and had an apt available that worked for us so we gave it a try. The front desk receptionist young man was very good and professional. The place is small but nice. Kinda hidden away off Thornton so drive slowly so you don't miss entrance to the building. Parking is in back behind the Harley Pharmacy. You have to pay first when u get there. Prices are reasonable. I requested someone that speaks good English. My mom had Mia, she is awesome. She is professional and very understanding. She defiantly knows what she is doing. She was able to identify my mom's sore spots and really help her get relaxed. My mother was very thankful which made me happy as she was feeling so much better after the massage. Somehow i hurt my back and its taking time to heal. Have a lot of knots on my lower back. I guess the only way to get rid of it is through deep tissue massage.I've tried Olay spa in newark, Luckys and this place. This place is good if you want someone to rub oil all over your body for $45. Wasn't too impressed. Felt same before and after the massage. Between the 3 I've tried, I recommend Olay (Linda) if you really want a deep tissue massage. She steps on your back and digs into the knots. read more

Ok-I love massages and have passed the big banner (GRAND OPENING) outside of this place for months. I kept checking Yelp and there were no reviews. I then found a coupon in one of those local freebie papers and decided to take a chance. The shop is located in an older small professional plaza in Newark. When I 1st approached the waiting room, I was worried I had stumbled upon a 'rub and tug'. I decided to take my chances...(I know I keep saying that). I am glad I did. I asked for a foot and hand massage and used my coupon. I paid 1st and then was taken to a pretty standard massage room-massage table, low lighting, new age music (piano, harps, and flute). While she (Miya) was getting the foot bath, I smelled the towels she had just laid down...they smelled clean and I could hear a washing machine somewhere. Well, let me say, I had a great foot and hand massage. Miya was amazing and kept checking with me about my comfort. I believe full body is $45. My coupon was for $25. I was so pleased I tipped $10. My experience was a good one. But don't expect a spa. It is pretty comparable to Serenity Day Spa in Fremont which I have been to. So try this place out and put your review up. read more

This massage parlor is a hidden gem! Mia & Emma are the best! There are a few other masseues' but I have yet to try them. They give awesome massages. The place is clean, the rooms are private. This is a great place and had my massage done by Cindy. I called in well a week in advance as I was told about ther place and Cindy by a friend. Happened to meet Mia also but did not know she was a massuese too. Had a good experience and a good 2 hour massage by Cindy. Will go in again soon and would like to see how Mia does too. The very feeling of having that massage relieved a lot of stress. The care taken is so much here that when I walked out after the massage Mia comes to me and checks and lets me know that I am still sore and would be fine soon after a few more sessions. Which I do agree. Just one suggestion. I come to get relieved of the stress. Do ask what I need and will let you know. You are doing a great job.
