It's light, shatteringly crisp on the bottom, and has those beautiful, irregular air pockets that give it a pillowy structure without ever feeling heavy. Let's talk about the sauce, because that's where most places fail. It isn't that sugary, paste-heavy stuff you find at standard joints. It is vibrant, bright, and tastes intensely of sun-ripened tomatoes and clean olive oil. It is remarkably fresco; striking that perfect balance where the acidity cuts through the richness of the cheese without overwhelming the palate. The vibe inside the West Lake spot is casual and unpretentious, but they take their craft seriously. Food service is streamlined and efficient; you order at the counter, and they pop the slices back into the oven so they land at your table screaming hot. They're especially known for their Roman-style pizza so I highly recommend giving it a try. As for flavors, you really can't go wrong but the standouts for me were the Potato, Chicken Parm and Lasagna slices. They also serve calzones, New York-style pizza, gelato and wine, so there's truly something for everyone. The pizza is priced by the slice, which makes it easy to mix and match like I did, though you can also order a full pie. I will say this definitely isn't cheap pizza, but you're absolutely paying for quality ingredients and incredible flavor. I ended up taking mine to go, but they do have a few tables inside and outside if you want to dine in. With plenty of parking, fast service and mind-blowing flavors what more could you ask for from a pizza spot?

Newk's is a disaster from top to bottom. I made two visits to make sure the bad first trip wasn't a fluke, but I will not make a third. First, the decor makes the restaurant look like either a toy store or a fascist clown college. The way the restaurant is arranged, from the awkward menu boards to the confusing and chaotic takeout area, results in traffic jams and service problems when ordering and picking up. If you order water with your meal, you are given a tiny cup and pointed toward either a slow dripping glass decanter or a scratched plastic pitcher that everyone touches. The ordering system uses plastic cards with numbers. No problem there, except the cards look like they are never cleaned, so I received one on my first visit that appeared to have some type of old sauce on it. Diners and servers touch these cards before the food is eaten, which is not a good way to avoid germs. The restaurant appears to be chronically understaffed, with people racing from the counter to the food pick-up area to dirty tables. Look closely, as I did, and you will notice that employees frequently go from the cash register to serving food without washing their hands. Same thing with clearing dirty tables. It seems like everyone, even managers, have to pitch in clearing dirty tables because of a lack of bussers, and many frequently seem to forget to wash hands before serving food. The Italian sandwich I got tasted pretty good, but when pressed about the claims of "freshness," I received conflicting information. I finally got an employee to tell me that all the bread was frozen and then thawed before toasting. Same thing with the brownies, cakes, and other desserts, which have to be shipped from a corporate bakery out of state. I saw the soups being poured from a plastic bag, so I would assume that those are frozen as well. The "made fresh daily" claim I heard from managers seems to be either overstated or an outright lie. The restaurant suffered from a general lack of cleanliness. Upon sitting at my booth, I discovered a layer of crumbs on the bench and at my feet. The soap was out in men's room dispenser. Looking into the salad area, I noticed dirty rags lying on the counters, including around food waiting to be served. The serving tray that my food was brought on appeared to have old food and sauces on it. My silverware wrap was greasy, and the silverware appeared to have what I hope are water-spots and not old ranch. Walking by the high chairs and booster seats, I noticed many of them had food stuck to them. Not what I would want my child to sit in. The food was okay, but overall, this restaurant appears to suffer from a serious lack of management and staffing. Judging from the cleanliness of the dining room and visible preparation areas (the salad area in particular), this place is a little dirtier than I like in my favorite eating spots. Without a health inspection score online, I couldn't confirm this, but with so many places serving the same type of food, I'm not going to risk it again. I also like going with local businesses over corporate chain restaurants with unknown ownership. read more

I'm a huge fan of second chances when it comes to restaurants, so I figured I'd give Newks a second go-round, expecting better service than the first time I went. The first issue starts right when you walk in the door: the menu is on the left as the managers loiter around in the background awkwardly greeting you from the opposite side. Basically, your back is turned to both the cashier and the manager as you decide what to order. I observed from customers ahead of me that it made it hard for the customer to be heard, since they were typically still looking at the menu as they were ordering... this cuts off that key initial customer-employee relationship that's made. As a result, the staff did not at all seem like they were happy to be there and it was obvious that the manager was trying really hard to appear enthusiastic. I had decided to check out the menu online beforehand. I decided to get the margherita pizza, the one with the least amount of calories (unlike its sister pizza, "Five Cheese" which has near 1400). I went to sit at a table, which, much to my dismay, had crumbs littered across it from its previous customers. I went at night, after the "dinner rush" so I expected the service to be much better. Hey, they are "fast casual" after all, right? To my amazement, it took near 25min to get my one personal pizza and a cup of water. I was a little suspicious of the not-entirely-browned pizza but ate my meal anyways. During the course of my meal, I remembered that their website advertised breadsticks, so I asked where they were. I was then directed to something called "the roundtable" that housed various condiments and the said breadsticks. These "breadsticks" were just crumbly pieces of crackers. (If you're familiar with the Japanese snack Pocky sticks, they tasted like that, but without the chocolate and much more bland.) Disappointed, I returned to my table. After eating, I went to the restroom to wash up. The soap dispenser certainly did not feel as if it were dispensing soap. Instead, the... goo? had a greasy, lotion-like consistency, not something characteristic of soap. I left and ended my night with a sickly stomach and a sense of extreme dissatisfaction. This is the best thing that ever happened to the Arboretum. The Newk's Favorite salad is by far the best salad I have had in a long time. The combination of the sweet dried cranberries, pecans and Gorgonzola cheese is genius. It is an absolute challenge to find a place to eat where the staff seems so excited to be there and have a genuine concern that your experience is excellent. As I sat and watch the management of Newk's, I was amazed to see how much fun they were having with the staff. I have worked for many years in the restaurant business and have not seen such positive attitudes. I have been to Newk's now, quite a few times. Newk's has become our go-to Sunday spot, and it never disappoints! The restaurant is always clean, the staff is friendly, and while the prices are a little higher, it's absolutely worth every penny for the quality you get. I went to the initial opening of Newks as I met some of their staff promoting their new opening in the Arboretum area. The staff was very friendly and attentive. The drinks are unsweetened and can be sweetened as you like perfect for people who have to watch their sugar intake. The restaurant is spacious and open with a modern down to earth flare. Even if the restaurant would be full because of the high ceilings the place doesn't feel crowded. It's in the center of the Domain with walking distance to many shops and other places. It was so easy to order online and 15 minutes later my order was sitting on the To-Go shelf by the front door of the restaurant. It turns out they do have a few parking spaces in front with 15 minute To-Go parking and even a sign with a number for curbside pickup apparently. But going inside was much easier, and since it was a Friday night I actually had parked in the garage. Surprising the food wasn't still hot when I got home 5 minutes later, but I just zapped it in the microwave really fast. But I bet if they had kept it in the back under a heat lamp, it would have stayed hotter. This location is supposed to be open until 11 p.m. and I showed up at 10:20 p.m., a full 40 minutes before closing and found the whole kitchen and store to be already shutting down leaving myself and remaining customers with the old and hardened scraps left over. There is no reason why a food establishment should be closing down 40 minutes early, terrible management. On top of that, the salmon I got was hard as a rock and smelled awful because it was clearly old due to the kitchen being shut down before I arrived, meaning they were serving old batches of protein. Then to top it off, when I asked for a refund, they told me the manager wasn't around so I would have to come back the following day to initiate a refund...all that after already wasting my time trying to eat here and then being left at 10:40 p.m. to find another place to eat. Very disappointed.

We ordered online (yay, they finally got this going for all stores), set our preferred pickup time, and mosey'd over at half-time.
