I love Newport creamery and the updates inside and out today really did give them a glow up. I've always loved having breakfast here at the little community breakfast bar and def will be back for some soon and an awful awful. Savannah helped me today and she was very nice and though. Very appreciated! I loved the cold foam for the iced coffee. So good---literally ate it with a spoon. However the iced coffee itself didn't do it for me. Good thing I prefer a coffee milk or coffee awful awful when there! Tried the iced coffee due to RI food fights and that's just my personal feedback. Everything else has been great! read more

I participated in the Rhode Island Food Fights 9th Annual Ice Cream Event and this was my fourteenth stop. When we arrived, we followed the small crowd standing outside to the ice cream ordering windows. There were only about 4 parties ahead of us and 2 people taking orders at separate windows, so I thought it should be quick. However, I think they were also helping with orders from customers dining in because it took 45 minutes to 1 hr for me to get my ice cream. I think lots of people were also ordering awful autuls which seem to take a while to make with the machines they have. They had some award winning flavors, so obviously I had to choose from those. I went with the NY strawberry cheesecake and my brother ordered the smores. The serving size was excellent, but the ice cream itself was not that great. The NY strawberry cheesecake tasted a lot like strawberry milk made with syrup and it was far too soft. The smores was better in consistency (I think it was because they opened up a fresh container) but did not have a wow factor. read more

I've been coming to NC for 40 years and today was the worst experience I've ever had , I will never come back . The food was mediocre at its best , the ambiance was just ok . We were a party of 2 , brought to our table And the waitress (Michelle) took our order at 11:45am . We ate our meal and not once did she come back to ask if everything was OK . No refills for our drinks ~ we sat in the booth unattended for another 45 minutes until another waitress came by and asked if we wanted anything else . I saw that our waitress was sipping on a drink in the galley . It was a deplorable experience ! I know people might have bad days we all have them but come back to your tables and check on us , I'm paying for your service !! Refill our drinks or ask another waitress to help out ! I'm a high tipper usually but today was poor service . So it wasn't warranted . Service was Awful Awful . The kicker was when I hugged my daughter in the parking lot goodbye that waitress (Michelle) comes out to us and screams at me , "You have no idea what's going on" We have NO idea what that meant but I marched back in asked to talk to the manager and I explained she was nowhere to be found in the 1.5 hours we were there . Then boldly came out into the parking lot to make her rude statement ! Unprofessional I can honestly say if she was having a bad day , unfortunately it showed . I've been here a few times. The ice cream and Fro Yo is very good. The service is confusing and painfully slow. Expect to wait 5 times longer than it should take to scoop out ice cream. It's way easier to just buy the pre made quarts . But if you want to wait expect it to take literally like 5 times as long. I didn't have the patience tonight and gave up and left after waiting 20 minutes behind 2 people. There were literally six people at the ordering window just doing nothing and talking . If I could give my experience below a one star I would. I have never seen a team and place so unorganized. They are all just wondering around like they have nothing going one there was two lady's working there butts off! But the was a taller guy he was very nice but I never seen such slow service in my life he keep walking away just leaving my stuff everywhere it took him over 40min to make two 1 scoop ice creams and one milk shake. Not to mention the place was disgusting. I watched a worker scoop melted sherbet out of the freezer, where they hand the ice cream to customers. I don't know if the freezer was broken or what the deal was but definitely nasty. An employee kept refusing customers service and ignoring them on purpose. There was nothing appealing or satisfying about the time spent here. Let me start by saying I am a little biased. I have going to the creamery in Newport my whole life. I have always loved the awful, awful. It's awfully thick and awfully good. I always get the large chocolate and prepare myself for brain freeze. A standard cone with jimmies on a hot summer day is a must. The food here will never win any awards, but it's good. The classic hotdog on a grilled New England bun is a great choice. The waffle grilled cheese would be my second thing I would recommend. The crew at the take out counter work hard. Going to the creamery is a summer must do. I miss walking to Newport location but the one in Middletown is a short drive away. Enjoy life, eat ice cream. read more

I really enjoyed my visit to Newport Creamery. I went with some friends for dinner on a Thursday evening, and the restaurant was very quiet. We were seated immediately, and our server was quick to bring out waters for the table. I had the super crunchy grilled cheese, which is a heart attack of a sandwich, which means it tasted really good! My friend got the grilled cheese burger, which was even better! Had been going here since the 1970's, haven't been in 25yrs + - Walked into a completely new restaurant, all new decor, the electricians were still at work. Service was great, new menu but old staples still on it. Food was great, waitress stated they upped the food quality under new regime and it showed. I believe their sales is in how they can deck out the ice cream in a variety of ways. We just wanted a scoop of ice cream on a cone. This is a local ice cream chain that I had tried before. We came here after our visit to Newport and got in the ice cream line outside. The experience would have been better if it weren't for the manager chastising the rest of her crew in front of customers. She was blaming them for not talking or responding to her and it just seemed like a miserable workplace. I felt bad for the workers there who were just trying to do their jobs. The ice cream we got included the maple walnut and walnut fudge. It was disappointed because they ran out of the other flavors we wanted to try and it felt like there weren't as many options. Uhhh awfully confusing is how I would describe this place. Saw a bunch of people waiting in line outside so I decided to stop by. First off, the menu is missing quite a few things. All it lists are flavors & toppings, and in the middle there's a tiny piece of paper that states "classic", "outrageous" and "cookie monster". This menu in the middle is the only thing that lists prices. Now, there's no listings of any sizes (kiddie, small, medium), no prices, or even if you can get cups or cones of ice cream...just this very cryptic piece of paper. I later found out from someone standing in line that this little menu is listing their types of milkshakes...would've been nice to have that word somewhere on the menu. I just opted for two kiddies with jimmie's and it came to ~$12. Couldn't tell ya how much each kiddie was or how much jimmie's cost as it wasn't listed anywhere... Don't know if it's not really meant to be a takeout window and if their restaurant menus have more descriptions and options. However, if they are going to operate this window as such the menu board needs to be updated. The actual ice-cream was just ok, wouldn't write home about it. We stopped in for breakfast and had a very large party! The staff didn't bat and eye at the number in our party (or the number of small children!) and seated us quickly. When we all were ready to order, the food came out correct (which is a feat with so many people!) and fairly quickly! They have a large variety of breakfast dishes. I had a breakfast quesadilla and it was fantastic. My cousin raved about her breakfast burrito. The pancakes and other items also had rave reviews from the family. My daughter ate a delicious breakfast sandwich and topped it off with a cereal banana split--she loved it and it there was plenty to share with her other cousins. Yes, it does get five stars, and hits this mark for a bunch of reasons. Years ago, every town of any consequence had one, or two, or three, dining establishments where a person could get sandwiches, a burger, fries, ice cream, or breakfast. The drink of choice was coffee, and maybe a Coke. Maybe this restaurant was a strictly local place, or maybe it was part of a chain, but it served great comfort food that everyone enjoyed. Today, you can't find as many of these small restaurants any more, as they have been displaced by fast causal eateries, or locations specializing in more exotic fare, or perhaps a luxury place. Fortunately, there is still the Newport Creamery, still doing it well in Middletown, right by where the chain started. What you get is a menu similar to what local restaurants always used to serve, with the standards and standbys, along with a small seafood selection (it's right by the ocean, so why not), and ice cream. And, of course, there is the Awful Awful, and no trip to Newport Creamery at any of its locations would be complete without one. It's a big, supercharged milk shake that is Awful big and Awful good, hence the name. I have been getting them for over 40 years and they never disappoint. It was the perfect chaser to my burger and fries which is as good as I have always had every time I've gone to one of Newport Creamery's locations. There is a window serving ice cream for takeout and, while I've had it before, I had to forego it on my most recent visit, as the Awful Awful had me hitting my limit for the afternoon. If there was anything better than the food itself, it had to have been the service. Our server, whom I believe was from down South, was knowledgeable about everything (and I mean everything) on the menu, made sure everything was prepared exactly as we wanted, and never hovered over us as we enjoyed a very memorable lunch. She herself would have warranted five stars! I've been going to Newport Creamery locations for over 40 years, and Newport Creamery still does regular food incredibly well. Many of its competitors have changed or gone by the wayside, but this great place still produces real food for real people, and does it as well as ever. Keep up the great work. read more

It truly, truly pains me to have to write this review. I grew up spending every summer in Newport for over 30 years. The Newport Creamery was a very special place for our family, as my grandparents had been going for decades. We came for the nostalgia, and left mortified, regretting our decision and wishing we had left well enough alone. It's no wonder all of the other many locations have shuttered. The clam chowder was probably the single worst we've ever had. There are canned versions that are far superior. The fish and chips was SO greasy, that the breading was just dripping grease, didn't stick to the fish, and the fish itself was rubbery. The fries were extremely over cooked, and both the fish and the chips, tasted like very, very, old oil. The oil that you could tell had been in the fryer for far beyond what is acceptable. The ice cream definitely failed to deliver as well, as served so sloppy, dripping everywhere, and flowing out of the dish onto the table. It tasted OK, but nothing to write home about, as it used to be. The service was mediocre at best, and gave the feeling of being in a waffle house, as did the restrooms, and the overall ambiance. The restaurant used to have a fun, family feel to it, but it feels so cold and corporate now. Highly disappointing to say the least. read more

We came here on our last night in Newport! We had heard about the Awful Awful and needed to try. When I first entered the place, it reminded me a lot of Friendly's! We were seated right away in one of their comfy booths. Their menu has so many options, mostly comfort food which is a plus. (Calories don't count on vacation!) Not sure if I'm basic but I wasn't feeling the fried stuff so I ordered the salad with grilled chicken. My friends ordered a chili dog and a grilled cheese. I had been planning to try the ice cream but I noticed there weren't any dairy free flavors on the menu. My friends ordered the Awful Awful in chocolate and Oreo; the latter came out the winner. This is probably the worse review I ever gave. I ordered a 2 scoop double Sundae with chocolate peanut butter frozen yogurt, hot fudge and walnuts. I didn't see any round "scoops" of frozen yogurt, it was a mess of fudge mush, I I took 2 bites, it was all fudge. Then I stuck my spoon the middle of the contents, took a 3rd bite, and I tasted a small portion on the spoon that was cold. Then I was able to lift the entire contents out of the sundae glass from the bottom on the spoon with one lift. So I either got 1 SMALL scoop or 2 table spoons of frozen yogurt that got drowned with hot fudge. I told the waiter, he brought out a new one, SAME EXACT THING! I order this all the time at the Cranston location and I never had a problem. I told the waiter that I'm not paying for this, I'll pay for my wife's order. Then I get the bill, he charged me for it. I requested the manger, he came over and described the above to him, got the spoon and lifted out the entire contents of the sundae glass from the bottom and asked him, this is 2 scoops of frozen yogurt? I'm not paying for it! So he deducted it from the bill, left $7 on the table for my wife's order and I walked out. THIS PLACE IS A DISGRACE! read more

The ice cream itself is delicious and creamy, great flavors. Unfortunately, the interior set-up of the congested ordering area needs to be rethought. There is no signage for where to order and pay. The cashier point is tucked away from the counter, making it confusing and open for credit card fraud. The person taking our order didn't write down anything and brought the wrong flavor. Customers can't see the ice cream tubs while standing in line, only when they get to the front. And when you do get to the front to order, none of the ice cream tubs are even labeled! What a missed opportunity to show off the ice cream flavors that's so easy to fix! Also, there are NO signs for prices, sizes, or descriptions. We had to ask. This is basic sales information! Hopefully the owner will remedy this lack of essential, informative signage. Go and study how it's done at other ice cream shops. Their ice cream deserves better! read more

had some first time rhode island visitors and took them to newport, i thought what better way to be a coastal tourist than to buy them awful awfuls and drink them (or eat them?) while doing the cliff walk! this place is cute because of the ice cream shoppe portion of the establish and the retro diner vibes. didn't try the food just the awful awfuls on take out. pretty clean easy to find parking. the server who took our order was really nice and she seemed overworked but still super sweet. the other staff however were a bit rude to my party. we sat waiting for the awful awfuls and when we saw the cookie monster come out with no lid, we asked another server who wasn't doing anything if we could have napkins and a cup to put the cookie and whipped cream in. he pretty much barked at my visitors and yelled "go and ask the lady you ordered from" my visitor calmly replied "she looks really busy i just didn't want to bother her" and the associate retorted back "then you need to wait a few minutes i'm busy" while he stood there doing nothing and began socializing with another co worker. he also threw the napkins on the counter in front of us and almost dropped the cup from slamming it down. my visitor said thank you and the associate said sure. it was really odd. the milkshake portion of the cookie monster was good but the cookie did not taste good at all. it tasted like an expired bakery cookie that was frozen and defrosted a few times over. the cliff walk views and fresh tasting milkshake made up for the rest. but i won't recommend this location of newport creamery to others due to the disrespectful interaction. read more
