Heard great things and am dying to find a home in Christ. First visit to this church, a junior pastor was preaching. His sermon spoke on how we must re-interpret the Bible on its statements on homosexuality and transgendered people. That the verses don't really mean what they state. I vote for equal human rights for the LGBTQ community BUT I draw the line at changing what the Lord commands for his children and for the church. This is a church that has fallen victim to the blurring of the lines of morality due to social pressure. This church is not for me. read more

My wife and I each spent a large chunk of our formative years being shepherded by the pastors and other leaders of Newsong Church in Irvine (and we met at Newsong Church in Bangkok, Thailand). We often reminisce about those days and even now consider this church our spiritual home because of Pastor Dave and his vision and his relentless pursuit of the least, the last and the lost. I am inspired that all these years later, they are truly a church doing incarnational ministry, living and serving in the margin and building up the next generation of Christ followers. One may think that Newsong has two locations since it used to be considered a "megachurch" in Irvine--but they've made an unpopular but inspiring move to Santa Ana--the forgotten (begotten?) city of Orange County. I never visited the old Newsong, but I'm glad to consider this church my new home. I rarely ever hear about incarnational churches (especially BIG churches), but Newsong planted itself where things are not as pretty and nice. If you're looking for a flashy church with milk and honey flowing from its sides and "feel so good" teachings about comfortable living--look elsewhere. Newsong will challenge you to experience God and to embrace your inner misfit. Highlights: - Sunday services 9am, 11am, 6pm. Expect around 1.25 hour long services. Worship is around 30 minutes (I know I'm not the only one wishing worship was longer...). - Worship style is contemporary charismatic-y. If you're familiar with Bethel Music, Jesus Culture, and some older-school worship music sprinkled in there--this is what you should expect. It's a breath of FRESH air to have such a vibrant and engaging worship time with a full band (and occasionally the organist!). You kind of get Bethel church worship right here in Santa Ana - a great treat indeed. - Pastor Gibbons and staff are not about comfortable theology. There's a good mixture of social justice, spiritual formation, middle-ground theology (not too conservative or liberal). I cant really put my finger on it. - Sermons are led by different pastors or speakers on staff. Most of time it would be Dave Gibbons. The sermon is more like a message/talk. Less about structured step-by-step Bible themes. But they would have a multi-week series on a theme and use Scripture as the backbone to highlight a message or a talk. If you're looking for a theology-intensive sermon from someone with an M.Div wearing a suit and tie with 3.5 strands of gray hair--you wont get that here. - Prayer is a key component of the church (it should be the key of any/all churches?). They have a few teams dedicated to prayer. Listening/healing prayer, encouraging word team, Sunday prayer team, etc etc. - theMIX: Every Wednesday church members hold FREE classes and learning opportunities for anyone. This was the most incarnational and intentional ways to affect Newsong's neighbors. By providing opportunities for growth in interests (martial arts, instruments, guitar lessons, dance lessons, painting, surfing, educational groups, practical skills, life skills) in a safe and stable environment--we're providing a practical service for our neighbors. Imagine all the kids having an opportunity to be influenced by positive role models and surroundings and may become more resilient to drugs, gangs, and other negative influences. I'm so proud of this part of Newsong's way to meet the needs of Santa Ana. - Small groups and age-specific gatherings. They are held everywhere in the city and outside the city. I'm a part of the Young Adult big-group that meets every Thursday (around 50ish of us?) so it's a great way to get to know more people. Small groups are way way smaller. - Mental Health Initiative. You wont see this happening in a lot of churches but thankfully my church has taken heed the importance of mental health being talked about in church. As a therapist I'm extremely proud of how leaders have embraced and challenged their views on mental health. A small team of us are starting a adolescent Depression/Suicide support group that's held weekly at Church. Boom. Pros: - Multi-ethnicity. You'll notice a lot of different faces than your own when you walk in here from all different age groups. Which also means different expressions are welcomed! - Spanish live translations through an app. - Live stream the service on Newsong dot net! - Every week there's free lunch for newcomers cooked by talented chefs! I've yet to partake in this, sadly. I cry inside. - PourOver coffee, fresh fruit, bagels, munchie food items on sale before every service. - Ample parking. Well, depends. Just dont come too late. There's a few newcomer spots right in front of the church! Cons: - If you're prone to blending in and not liking bigger crowds, Newsong may seem too big for you. I believe there's around 1-2000 members. Get plugged into a group or two and it'll be manageable. This is not really a con, though. This review turned out too long. Great pews, great news, great food, Papa Johns! Err I mean Newsong Church! I started coming to Newsong 6-7 months ago and it feels like a study abroad program from all the different cultures and backgrounds melted into one campus. Coming from white megachurch all my life I have never experienced such a congregation that is here. 60% or so of the congregation at the campus is Asian which is a culture shock even from one Asian brother to another. I honestly had an adjustment period in the beginning of coming here that opened my eyes to what it truly looks like to do life with a multicultural, multigenerational diversely socioeconomic group of people that stretched me in a good way. There are some pretty sweet fringe benefits from being a part of such a diverse group of people. Exhibit A: the post Sunday service lunch. Newsong has a crew of professional chefs in the congregation that donate their time and money to make huge soul food fusion type of meals that make 4th Street Market look like a copycat. As a foodie I have to plug this, I mean if you don't enjoy pho, carne asada tacos with cilantro rice, or authentic bimbimbop with the poached egg on top you may be at the wrong church. Oh and not to mention there is an elote/shaved ice cart lady that they let also be a part of the action too. 5/5 stars for community lunches! I could write an op-ed about all the rad community initiatives that Newsong does in Santa Ana for the homeless community, the youth and the immediate community surrounding the church. They intentionally moved their church from megachurch capital of the world in Irvine area to the Samaria of the OC and it wasn't a popular decision from what I've heard. I like that. That type of risk taking in the name of love for the poor and outcasts is what really keeps me coming back. read more

After our first 2 Sundays coming, we knew we found our home. We have now been here for 6 months and as we get more involved we find that the church is just as good as it seemed and is filled with people who love Jesus, love others and are dedicated to reaching our diverse community. The best church I have been to it's filled with so much love of God in it. The pastor is so amazing has a great heart and leads with his heart love is shown to us am filled with Gods love when I go every time. The body is united there you won't feel unwelcome only accepted and made filled special and you will be with others that will pour into you it's my home from home. I am disappointed that Newsong gave up on Irvine and the UCI college kids. I came here today for Easter service and it was sort of blah. The songs sung during worship used to be inspirational and uplifting. Now all the songs are those depressing ones. I find myself just humming along rather than singing. I never understood the terminology of church of "misfits." If everyone is welcome in church, you basically fit in (no matter how big or small your role), then you ceased being a misfit because you fit. This term has always bothered me and I refuse to be labeled a misfit. Christians are not misfits. It's a big farther for me to drive but I will continue coming here for the meantime but it's sad to say that the church that I have loved over the past 10 years is slipping away. First, driving here is a hazard. There is a photo-enforced light in every corner in this city. That means SCRAM!, visitors not welcomed in Santa Ana. Why I am writing this review? Because something really bothered me today. As I was seated in the pews, one of the pastors (ES) walked down our row shaking everyone's hand and saying hi/happy Easter/Good morning. I was on the end and he turned around after greeting the guy next to me. Yep, no greeting for me. Afterall, 90% of the row must be good enough. Service didn't even start yet. Thanks for the cold shoulder, you were much friendlier in Irvine. I must be a nobody and I know I don't look like I come from Santa Ana but where is the community? Easter Service lasted for 1 hour. Then everyone scatters and leaves. This gave me time to drive to the old Newsong campus (now Saddleback) in Irvine today right before service was to start. You gave up on Irvine and your website maintenance but Newsong, don't give on me, I haven't given up on you. read more

Newsong has changed my life and connected me with an amazing community who are so wise and genuine. I was subconsciously broken and lost when I first came to Newsong. The motto of the church is "Home for the misfits", so I fit right in. (Aren't we all misfits in one way or another?) The love the vibe and the energy here, so accepting, welcoming, and heavy-hearted for others. Everyday, I'd learn an important lesson about life through the eyes of God, from being able to listen without interjecting your own stereotyped opinions to honoring values, my past, and my experience. The sermons touched me in many ways, gave me the confirmation I've so longed to hear, and reminded me of those I've been so lucky to have around me. I'd break down crying but then I'd come out relieved and light. Walls are being taken down, piece by piece. I've longed to belong, and now I'm home. So yes, I really really love Newsong!! Please check out the many community service ministries and self-discovering/relationship strengthening programs and bible study small groups Newsong has to offer. After reading what everyone is saying in their reviews, the negative reviews made me sad. I do have my share of frustrations, but I decided not to talk about it on the internet. Those negative words regarding people and church over all do nothing good for the body of Christ, except causing negativity and division. We need to be united as ONE church ONE body. ONEness is what I think Jesus would desire for His church. This is not just mine or your church, this is HIS church with everyone in it. Pros: 1. Worship got better ever since the last I wrote. I do know that God is still working in Newsong. God does not disappoint or neglect His children when we seek Him. 2. Awesome Christians who seek after God and loves Him. I was fortunate enough to meet some godly men and women of God at the church. 3. People can complain all they want about the messages. God still speaks through the speakers at Newsong. If you allow God to show you through the speakers words, it can be life changing. You just have to be willing to listen before passing judgements. If you are concerned about what you learn from church, how about daily devotions? Pastor Dave did mention about devotions FYI. I think most of the learning actually comes from intimacy with God and not waiting around to be fed at church. read more

I love this place! When I moved to California in 2008 I searched for churches all throughout the county for many years, it wasn't until September of 2014 when I discovered Newsong. I've been going to Newsong for nearly 11 years which seems to be unheard of someone my age. I've been through the ups and downs, but stuck around because Newsong is different from any other church I've been to. I love that there's a variety of speakers on the preaching team and this is the only church that will regularly pass the mic to people in the congregation to share how God is working in their lives. Newsong has been in Santa Ana for over a year now and doing it's best to made a lasting impact on the community through theMIX on Wednesday nights. It seems like it has naturally become the new community center in this area of Santa Ana. If you're looking for a new place to call home, come on through! Also, this isn't a deciding factor, but the coffee on Sunday mornings is off the hook. Some of the best coffee I've had at a church and it's legit with pour overs and everything. read more

The kids ministry has always been so amazing, and the college ministry is one of the best blessings that I've experienced. This church will fail you. Try to make friends and you will be ignored. After service, stand alone at the firepit, they stand in their cliques, will stare at you, then ignore you. Tried to connect with someone, who then failed to follow up. Attended irrelevant Sunday services from a guy simply moving away and leaving the church and a Sunday service just devoted to a call for volunteers for church help. There is no inspiration here with these kinds of people. There is no presence of God in their smug arrogance. They do not care. They do not love. read more
