Ordered Newt's online last night. Went in to pickup order was told it was not paid for Had to go back outside to my vehicle to prove it was paid for. As I was returning inside, I was told it was paid for I asked was tartar sauce in the bag, which was stapled shut, and was told yes. I live in Laurel, got home and opened the bag, there was NO sauce and NO hush puppies Not sure what's going on with the catfish fillets, but they were flat, tough, and did not taste like catfish. As I was chewing, every other bite had a crunchy texture in it. I use to love and brag about Newt's to others but that was probably my last visit. That was my second subpar experience. read more

I typically really have a great experience but tonight was super slow. I called my order in at around 7:40. I was told to be here at 8:10, so I was here and paid at that time. After sitting another 20 minutes I finally get my food. I was love to blame it on the store being busy but that clearly wasn't the case. A guy showed up after me and it seemed as if he was the owner because everyone in the store came to talk to him. The food is generally great but the ridiculous wait time isn't attractive. read more

You should eat here. The atmosphere was family friendly and they had live music. All the waitstaff were so very friendly. And the food! Oh my... I ordered the oyster po'boy it has 6 large oysters perfectly fried in a delicate batter, the bread was everything it should have been for the po'boy. The boudin balls were just the right amount of spicy. Dear goodness the hush puppies and queso, the hush puppies were light and the queso had shrimp in it. Oh and the Mac and cheese was thick and cheesy. The fried items were all divine. Next time I will need to try the blackened fish or all you can eat crab. read more

Gem in middle of nowhere. Food was good, service was great. We both had seafood platters and were pleased.

The best fried catfish in our area, the only downside is that they are only open, Thursday, Friday and Saturday!

Good seafood and service. Live music was an added plus in the comfortable country setting.

From friends experience, they said it was a nice part time job if you don't mind cleaning tables. For the amount of pay you get per day it's a reasonable amount considering it's a part time job. Would recommend to anybody new and young to work there. read more

I dined here tonight with friends. While there a server spilled tea on a new dress that I literally took the tags off today before coming. The manager never came to the table to apologize. When I received my ticket there was no adjustments to it either. The server returned with my ticket and I stated the ticket is the same. She responded the manager took the tea off. The manager came to the table and I explained what happened and how I felt that 3 dollars was not enough for the accident. His response was he doesn't give away free food. I never asked for free food. I then asked if he would cover my dry cleaning bill and his response was no. He was so rude and nasty I just asked him to leave my table. His response was you don't tell me what to do in my restaurant. And told the server to add the drink back on the ticket. Which they did. Like I told him at the table I would give him the publicity he wants. Just like I referred many family and friends there. I would caution you to dine there. I understand mistakes happen but the way things were handled was not right. If that was not coffee or hot food would you still have that same nonchalant/nasty approach. Even the tables that were beside me, and witnessed the accident stopped and checked on me before leaving. Well you will never see me and my family there again. I have never been treated so ugly in all my years. A simple sincere apology and a decent discount would have sufficed. The money Ileft there today will be the last dollars you will ever see of mine. I got the Dungeness crab legs. Worth the money absolutely delicious. Staff was amazing.

I went for the all you can eat crab legs. If you want them seasoned - you'll have to do that yourself. The corn was seasoned well. The server was super nice but we were sat literally 3 feet from the bathroom door. I think it is time to move this restaurant into a bigger building. The food is good and I would go back but I won't sit on top of the bathroom or in my neighbors lap. read more

Been 3 Wednesday's in a month. Got blackened catfish each time . The filets are cooked perfectly. Most places including ones in NOLA tend to over cook blackened fish. This restaurant doesn't. The Cajun seasoning they add to it really tastes good. Have tried the fried okra, hush puppies, salad bar and Cole slaw for sides so far. There are a lot of choices. Everything has been very fresh. What a great spot! A really neat location with a big dining room. We went on a busy Saturday and it sure was full. They are clearly a popular local spot. There were plenty of staff to make sure that everyone was seen to. We ordered some fried jalapeño and crawfish as an appetizer. It was fine for sharing between three of us. I had the full fish which came on a good size bed of French fries with some slaw. Fish was great! My buddies got the seafood platter. A little easier to eat than the full catfish but what a great portion. You could easily have left with tomorrow's lunch as well. Service was great and we were kept topped up with tea throughout. Pretty good food for a small town place. They are always packed, so they must be doing things right. Quality seafood, steaks and service.

When we travel to Mississippi this place calls us back every time. Good catfish, great shrimp and the absolute best hush puppies this side of the Mississippi. The cold slaw is the best. Always fresh, crunchy, and just the perfect balance of tangy and sweet. The sweet tea is perfect, not too sweet. And it's not on the menu but ask for vanilla ice cream and a wedge of lemon. Squeeze the lemon on the ice cream for a delicious surprise. The manager turned us on to this little secret and it's a must have at every visit. We were looking for somewhere to eat dinner close to the campground. Found Newt's on Yelp & decided to try it. Pulled up to a packed parking lot, so figured that was a good sign. We only had about a 10-min wait (didn't know they do call ahead seating) on a Saturday night. Blooming onion, chicken tenders, boiled shrimp, & seafood platter were all delicious. Staff were friendly & attentive. My only cons were the table was a little small for family of 4 dining, and we didn't get a ticket. I like to see what I am being charged for, just in case. Dear Newt Family, Very surprised at the complete lack of Newt related cuisine available. I mean where were the "newt skins" or the "fillet of newt?" Not to mention the most common of dishes "Newt legs!" Absolutely shocking. The only menu item to have any newtyness was "newtouille" which was admittedly beautiful. P.S. Wait staff was attentive, but their incessant screeching and long slobbery tongues often found themselves waggling into our sweet tea glasses. After reading nothing but good reviews my husband and I had dinner there last night. Nice atmosphere, clean and staff friendly. Hubby ordered the catfish dinner and complained that the fish was "mushy and no flavor" and after tasting them I agree. I ordered the large fried shrimp dinner. Coating was light but again no flavor. Just the fried coating and LOTS of salt. No shrimp flavor. We both had fried okra (yum), cold slaw (yum) and hush puppies, again soft and not much flavor. We were in Hattiesburg camping for spring break. We'd heard about Newts from some friends and it didn't disappoint. The fish, shrimp, oysters and hush puppies were all wonderful. All I can say is WOW what a great place to eat ! It's the best Catfish and Seafood in this country ! I've at e in a lot of places Al Ms La Al Tn Etc. It don't get any better than his I'll tell you for sure ! Quiet and great food nothing fancy no Jukebox . You may have to wait a little while to be seated but come on now it's worth it .
